Pinduoduo charts post-lockdown behaviour in China

Chinese consumers are planning to spend a five-day public holiday break starting May 1 outdoors, judging from sales of sporting and camping equipment ahead of next month, said e-commerce platform Pinduoduo (PDD).

According to the company, this is understandable given how the holiday would be the first long break since Chinese New Year in late January, during which most of China spent under varying degrees of lockdown to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Data compiled by PDD showed sports shoes, picnic mats, barbecue sets and fitness trackers were some of the top trending items from April 1 to April 19. The rankings were calculated by combining sales orders, search volume and shares.

Single-use bedsheets and first-aid kits also saw strong demand during the April 1–19 period, suggesting that health and hygiene are still top of mind.

Among sports brands, Nike, Adidas, Li Ning, Lululemon all registered strong sales, while the Honor Band 5 and Xiaomi Mi Band 4 fitness trackers were hot sellers. On a related note, PDD introduced a promotional day on April 20 for sneaker lovers, offering 600 models for sale. Popular models like the Adidas Yeezy 350 Boost were sold out within hours.

China’s domestic spending during the Golden Week holiday in May are watched for clues to the health of the economy and shape of the recovery following a weeks-long lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

To help with the recovery, PDD plans to launch a series of livestreaming travel programmes to promote travel destinations in China.

Furong Town, an ancient town in Hunan Province known for its Tu ethnic traditions, was the subject of a seven-hour livestreaming session on PDD on April 26. Wu Xiao, the town mayor, dressed in his ethnic costume, taught viewers the basic steps of their traditional dance. He also played tour guide and took the viewers to visit the town’s famous waterfall and other sights, introduced the local cuisine and handicraft.

Over 6 million messages were sent during the livestreaming session, which also featured a Buy 2 Get 1 Free promotion on tickets sold on PDD’s travel page.
