Apple's iPhone Air, the thinnest iPhone ever made, features a breakthrough titanium design that is elegant, light yet more durable than any previous iPhone.

Its back is protected with Ceramic Shield, and the front cover uses Ceramic Shield 2, delivering 3x better scratch resistance. The iPhone Air also features a 6.5" Super Retina XDR display.1

With the most Apple-designed chips in an iPhone — the powerhouse A19 Pro, N1, and C1X — iPhone Air is the most power-efficient iPhone ever made, Apple said. Paired with the redesigned internal architecture and software optimisations, iPhone Air has all-day battery life. A 48 MP Fusion Main camera enables the equivalent of four lenses with outstanding image quality, and the 18 MP Center Stage front camera takes selfies to the next level.

“The all-new iPhone Air is so powerful, yet impossibly thin and light, that you really have to hold it to believe it’s real. This huge leap in design and engineering is only made possible through Apple innovation, especially Apple silicon,” said John Ternus, Apple’s Senior VP of Hardware Engineering.

“iPhone Air is a brand-new member of the iPhone family that delivers advanced features our users will love, like pro performance, a versatile 48 MP Fusion camera system, our innovative Center Stage front camera, and great all-day battery life — all in a breakthrough design that feels like you’re holding the future.”

Featuring a breakthrough design with pro performance, iPhone Air is the thinnest iPhone ever made at 5.6 mm. The grade 5 titanium frame has a high-gloss mirror finish, and a new plateau on the back that is precision-milled on both sides to house the cameras, speaker, and Apple silicon. This maximises space for the battery to deliver all-day battery life. The thin design also features the Action button, allowing easy access to a variety of functions with just a press, and Camera Control, to quickly launch the camera or enable visual intelligence.2

The 6.5" Super Retina XDR display features ProMotion, with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz for smooth scrolling and stunning graphics. The Always-On display shows important information at a glance, and when not in use, it efficiently adjusts down to 1 Hz. The iPhone Air is easy to use outside with 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness — the highest ever on iPhone — and 2x better outdoor contrast.

The iPhone Air introduces the Ceramic Shield 2 front cover, which is tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic. A new Apple-designed coating provides 3x better scratch resistance and improved anti-reflection to reduce glare. For the first time, Ceramic Shield now protects the back of iPhone, including the plateau, delivering 4x better resistance to cracks than the back glass on previous models. And with the titanium frame, iPhone Air exceeds Apple’s stringent bend strength requirements.

Look out for the Center Stage front camera, which features the first square front camera sensor on an iPhone. The sensor offers a wide field of view and captures photos up to 18 MP. Users no longer have to rotate their iPhone to take a landscape selfie — they can take photos and videos in portrait or landscape while holding their iPhone vertically. For group shots, Center Stage for photos uses AI to automatically expand the field of view and can rotate from portrait to landscape to include everyone in the frame.

The Center Stage front camera enables ultra-stabilised video in 4K HDR, and users can record on the front and rear cameras simultaneously with Dual Capture. During calls over FaceTime or third-party apps, Center Stage for video calls keeps users stable and positioned in-frame.

A versatile new 48MP Fusion camera system gives users the equivalent of four lenses in their pocket. The custom main lens enables the popular 28 mm and 35 mm focal lengths, while a 2.0 µm quad-pixel sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilisation (OlS) excels in low light. Users can also get closer to their subject with the optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability, which features an updated Photonic Engine that captures more lifelike details and colour.

A new image pipeline built for iPhone Air enables Focus Control at the same level as multicamera systems, automatically capturing depth information so users can turn photos into portraits later in the Photos app. The iPhone Air also supports the latest generation of Photographic Styles, including a new Bright style that brightens skin tones and applies a pop of vibrance across the image.3

For video, the iPhone Air can record in 4K 60 fps Dolby Vision, and supports Action mode. Video is captured with Spatial Audio for immersive listening. Audio Mix lets users adjust sound after capture to boost voices and reduce ambient noise; and wind noise reduction minimises unwanted noise.

The iPhone Air design is made possible with Apple silicon. The A19 Pro, N1, and C1X chips make it the most power-efficient iPhone ever made, Apple said. The A19 Pro features a new six-core CPU that improves performance and efficiency for everyday tasks.

The five-core GPU has an upgraded architecture, delivering next-level mobile gaming, including AAA titles. Neural accelerators are built into each GPU core, bringing up to 3x the peak GPU compute over the previous generation, excellent for powering generative AI models running on-device.

The N1 is a new Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. In addition to powering the latest generation of wireless technologies, N1 improves the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.

The C1X chip, on the other hand, is a new cellular modem designed by Apple. C1X is up to 2x faster than C1, and for the same cellular technologies, it is even faster than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro, while using 30% less energy overall.

The advanced Apple silicon, an internal architecture that maximises battery space, and software optimisations combine together to deliver fantastic all-day battery life. The new Adaptive Power Mode in iOS 26 also gets to know a user’s typical battery consumption and anticipates when they might run low, intelligently conserving power to help get them through the day.

The iPhone Air features an eSIM-only design that saves space internally.4 An eSIM offers greater flexibility, better security, and seamless connectivity compared to traditional physical SIM cards. An industry standard, eSIM is supported by over 500 carriers worldwide. It also makes staying connected while travelling even more convenient, allowing continued connectivity through affordable international roaming plans from users’ home carriers or local prepaid options available with more than 200 carriers. For better security, eSIM cannot be physically removed if an iPhone is lost or stolen, and managing travel eSIMs is even easier with a new streamlined setup in iOS 26.

The upcoming iOS 26 elevates the iPhone experience with a new design, Apple Intelligence capabilities, and meaningful improvements to apps. The design refresh with Liquid Glass brings greater focus to content while keeping iOS familiar. Apple Intelligence now translates text and audio on the go with Live Translation, helping users communicate across languages in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.5 Updates to visual intelligence allow users to capture a screenshot and easily search or take action on anything they are viewing on their iPhone screen.2

The on-device foundation model at the core of Apple Intelligence is available to all developers, with apps already offering new intelligent, privacy-protected experiences that can even be used when offline. New screening tools for calls and messages help eliminate distractions so users can focus on the conversations that matter most. The new iOS version also introduces new features in CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps, and Wallet, as well as Apple Games, a new app that gives players a single destination for all their games.

Apple is also introducing a new ecosystem of accessories to complement the iPhone Air:

  • The iPhone Air Case with MagSafe — available in frost and shadow — has an ultra-thin translucent design with a lightly frosted interior, a high-gloss outer surface, and a protective reinforced polycarbonate frame.
  • The slim and lightweight iPhone Air Bumper — available in four matching colours — perfectly frames iPhone Air with a reinforced polycarbonate design for added edge protection.
  • Crafted from 100% recycled yarn, the Crossbody Strap drapes comfortably, with embedded flexible magnets and stainless steel sliding mechanisms to adjust the length and maintain secure alignment. The Crossbody Strap will be available in black, light gray, blue, light blue, purple, sienna, green, neon yellow, tan, and orange.
  • The iPhone Air MagSafe Battery has a thin and light design that seamlessly attaches to the back of the device. The MagSafe Battery quickly charges iPhone Air when the battery is low, and maximises battery life when connected throughout the day, delivering up to 40 hours of video playback when used together.

Apple 2030 is the company’s plan to be carbon neutral across its entire footprint by the end of this decade by reducing product emissions from their three biggest sources: materials, electricity, and transportation. The iPhone Air is made with 35% recycled content, including 80% recycled titanium, the highest ever for an iPhone, and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery.

The iPhone Air is also manufactured with 45% renewable electricity, like wind and solar, across the supply chain. It is designed to be durable, repairable, and offer industry-leading software support, while meeting Apple’s standards for energy efficiency and safe chemistry. The paper packaging is 100% fibre-based and can be easily recycled, while a new titanium USB-C port is 3D-printed to be thinner and stronger, fitting into the slim design while using 33% less material than a conventional forging process. .

Apple unveils iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

Apple has introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which deliver a leap in performance with the A19 Pro chip, enabling advanced camera systems, next-level mobile gaming, and Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max deliver Apple’s best-ever performance to date, plus advanced battery life. The new brushed aluminum unibody design is crafted with a lightweight aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminum alloy to deliver the best-ever thermal performance in an iPhone. On the back, a plateau creates additional space for internal components — making room for a larger battery. The antennas are integrated around the perimeter for the highest-performing antenna system ever in an iPhone.

The new internal architecture features an Apple-designed vapour chamber to enhance heat dissipation and performance. Deionised water is sealed inside the vapour chamber, which is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis to move heat away from the A19 Pro, allowing it to deliver higher performance levels. The heat is then carried into the aluminum unibody, where it is distributed evenly, managing power and surface temperatures so that the phone remains comfortable to hold.

Both models can charge 50% in 20 minutes with an optional high-wattage USB-C power adapter like Apple’s new 40 W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60 W Max.1

“(The) iPhone 17 Pro is by far the most powerful iPhone we’ve ever made, with a stunning new design rebuilt from the inside out to maximise performance and deliver an enormous leap in battery life,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.

“With three 48 MP Fusion cameras, a new Center Stage front camera experience, and pro-level video features, the creative opportunities are endless. iPhone 17 Pro sets a new standard for the smartphone industry and is a massive upgrade for our most demanding users.”

Available in 6.3" and 6.9" sizes,2 the Super Retina XDR display is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic. The Apple-designed coating offers 3x better scratch resistance and improved anti-reflection properties to reduce glare. The displays feature ProMotion up to 120 Hz, Always-On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness — the highest ever on iPhone — plus 2x better outdoor contrast. For the first time, Ceramic Shield protects the back of the devices, delivering 4x better resistance to cracks than the back glass on previous models.

A19 Pro is Apple’s most capable iPhone chip yet. When paired with the Apple-designed vapour chamber, A19 Pro enables iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation — ideal for gaming, video editing, and running large local language models (LLMs).

The six-core CPU is the fastest CPU in any smartphone according to Apple, while the six-core GPU architecture includes neural accelerators built into each GPU core, a larger cache, and more memory than the A18 Pro. The GPU works in tandem with the new 16-core Neural Engine to power Al models, stunning graphics, and AAA gaming titles like Arknights: Endfield, enabling hardware-accelerated ray tracing and higher frame rates.3

The iPhone 17 lineup also introduces N1, a new Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. In addition to powering the latest generation of wireless technologies, N1 improves the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature Apple’s best-ever camera systems with higher-resolution sensors front and back. Three 48 MP Fusion cameras — Main, Ultra Wide, and a new Telephoto — offer the equivalent of eight lenses, including the longest optical-quality zoom ever on iPhone.

The new 48 MP Telephoto camera has a next-generation tetraprism design with a sensor that is 56% larger than the previous generation to improve sharpness in bright light and bring more detail to darker shots. The new 4x optical zoom at 100 mm offers a classic lens for portraiture, while the 8x optical zoom at 200 mm, the longest ever on iPhone, provides longer reach and more creative choice.

With the updated Photonic Engine, the image pipeline uses more machine learning to preserve natural detail, reduce noise, and significantly improve colour accuracy. Digital zoom also increases up to 40x for photos, and users have even more options for customising their photos with next-generation Photographic Styles, including a new Bright style available in iOS 26 that brightens skin tones and applies a pop of vibrance across the image.4

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max also introduce a new Center Stage front camera. Center Stage features the first square front camera sensor on iPhone, offering a wider field of view and higher resolution — up to 18 MP for photos. Users can now take photos and videos in portrait or landscape while holding their iPhone vertically. For group selfies, Center Stage for photos uses AI to automatically expand the field of view and can rotate from portrait to landscape to include everyone in the frame.

The Center Stage front camera also enables ultra-stabilised video in 4K HDR, and users can now record on the front and rear cameras simultaneously with Dual Capture — perfect for speaking directly to camera while documenting behind-the-scenes action. During calls over FaceTime or third-party apps, Center Stage for video calls keeps users stable and positioned in frame.

With features like Dolby Vision HDR recording, 4K 120 fps, ProRes Log, and support for ACES, iPhone already leads the industry in smartphone video capture. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max unlock even more creative possibilities as the first smartphones to support ProRes RAW, Log 2, and genlock, a technique used to precisely synchronise video across multiple cameras and inputs. This helps creatives achieve accurate, professional-looking transitions and advanced creative techniques without hours of manual frame-by-frame alignment. Genlock is supported by the new Blackmagic Design Camera ProDock, and ProRes RAW is supported by Final Cut Camera and Blackmagic Camera, with APIs available to developers.

An industry standard, eSIM is a digital SIM that offers greater flexibility, better security, and seamless connectivity compared to traditional physical SIM cards.5 This capability is supported by over 500 carriers worldwide. ESIM-only models of iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in Bahrain, Japan, KSA, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, among other markets. These models feature an even larger battery, taking advantage of the space formerly occupied by the physical SIM to provide two additional hours of video playback, or up to 39 hours.

An eSIM also makes staying connected while traveling even more convenient, allowing continued connectivity through affordable international roaming plans from users’ home carriers or local prepaid options available with more than 200 carriers. For better security, an eSIM cannot be physically removed if an iPhone is lost or stolen, and managing travel eSIMs is even easier with a new streamlined setup in iOS 26.

The upcoming iOS 26 elevates the iPhone experience with a new design, Apple Intelligence capabilities, and meaningful improvements to apps. The design refresh with Liquid Glass brings greater focus to content while keeping iOS familiar. Apple Intelligence now translates text and audio on the go with Live Translation, helping users communicate across languages in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.6 Updates to visual intelligence allow users to capture a screenshot and easily search or take action on anything they are viewing on their iPhone screen.7

New accessories are also available for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max:

  • The TechWoven Case has a new technical woven fabric that uses multiple coloured yarns, creating a dimensional texture and rich depth, while a protective coating provides resistance to scratches and stains. TechWoven cases will be available in black, blue, purple, sienna, and green.
  • The iPhone 17 Pro Clear Case with MagSafe is crafted with a blend of clear polycarbonate and flexible materials with a scratch-resistant coating on the interior and exterior.
  • The Silicone Case with MagSafe will be available in orange, terracotta, neon yellow, purple fog, midnight, and black.
  • The new Crossbody Strap can be paired with the TechWoven Case and Silicone Case, giving users a hands-free way to wear the iPhone. The Crossbody Strap will be available in black, light gray, blue, light blue, purple, sienna, green, neon yellow, tan, and orange.

Apple 2030 is the company’s plan to be carbon neutral across its entire footprint by the end of this decade. Product emissions are to be cut from their three biggest sources: materials, electricity, and transportation. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are made with 30% recycled content, including 100% recycled cobalt in the battery and 100% recycled gold plating in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards.

Both models are manufactured with 40% renewable electricity, like wind and solar, across the supply chain. Apple launches three new iPhones

Apple has announced three new iPhones. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are now the most advanced models in the iPhone family.

The 5.8" iPhone XS and 6.5" iPhone XS Max feature Super Retina displays, a faster and improved dual camera system, and work on the Apple-designed A12 Bionic chip, the first 7-nanometer chip in a smartphone. The A12 delivers the Neural Engine, the TrueDepth camera system, and Face ID.

“IPhone XS is packed with next-generation technologies and is a huge step forward for the future of the smartphone. Everything is state of the art including the industry-first 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip with eight-core Neural Engine, faster Face ID and an advanced dual camera system that shoots Portrait mode photos with Smart HDR and dynamic depth of field,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.

“IPhone XS is not one, but two new iPhone models, and iPhone XS Max offers the biggest display ever in an iPhone with the biggest battery ever in an iPhone, delivering up to an hour and a half more battery life in your day.”

He also commented on the iPhone XR, saying: “IPhone XR helps us reach even more people with the latest iPhone innovations. It is packed with the newest technologies including a 6.1" Liquid Retina display that goes edge to edge, the latest TrueDepth camera with faster Face ID authentication, new 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip with second generation Neural Engine and a 12-megapixel camera that takes advanced Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting photos.

“The new iPhone XR has a gorgeous new aerospace-grade aluminium and glass enclosure that has IP67 protection from liquids and dust, long all-day battery life and comes in six beautiful finishes. iPhone XR makes it possible for even more people to have the great experience of the latest iPhone X technology, in beautiful new designs, at a more affordable price.”

The A12 Bionic chip

Apple calls the A12 Bionic "the smartest and most powerful chip in a smartphone". The chip features a six-core fusion architecture with two performance cores that are up to 15% faster, four efficiency cores that are up to 50% more efficient, a four-core GPU that is up to 50% faster, an Apple-designed image signal processor (ISP), and a video encoder. The performance enhancements unlock new experiences for games, photography, video editing and graphics-intensive apps while still offering good battery life, the company said.

Machine learning

The Neural Engine is built for advanced machine learning in everything from photography to augmented reality. A new eight-core design allows it to complete up to 5 trillion operations per second compared to 600 billion delivered by the A11 Bionic chip. This enables new capabilities like faster plane detection for ARKit and new features that use real-time machine learning. ARKit is Apple's iOS development platform for augmented reality applications.

For the first time the Neural Engine is open to Core ML, empowering developers to build apps that utilise this highly efficient machine learning engine. Core ML running on the A12 Bionic Neural Engine is up to nine times faster than on the A11 Bionic, with as little as one-tenth the energy usage.

New mobile operating system

The three new iPhones come with the iOS 12 mobile operating system. The operating system supports augmented reality and makes communications more expressive with new Animoji and Memoji. Animoji are 3D emoji in the shape of animals that can mimic the user's facial movements, while Memoji have human forms. Other iOS 12 features include Screen Time, which helps customers understand and take control of the time they spend interacting with their iOS devices, Siri Shortcuts to give any app the ability to work with Siri and new privacy features.

Face ID

Face ID is faster, enabled by software optimisations and a faster secure enclave. The TrueDepth camera system uses precision depth-sensing technology for facial authentication.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

In the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max a surgical grade stainless steel band now in gold joins finishes in silver and space grey. Wider stereo playback creates an immersive sound stage. The front and back glass design features improved scratch resistance, while the glass back enables faster wireless charging. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max reach a new level of splash and water resistance of IP68 for up to 2 m for 30 minutes and protect against everyday spills1.

Both smartphones build on the all-screen design of iPhone X and feature the sharpest displays with the highest pixel density of any Apple device. Offered in 5.8" and 6.5" sizes2, these Super Retina displays with a custom OLED design support Dolby Vision and the HDR10 standard. IOS system-wide colour management delivers colour accuracy.

Both the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max offer a million-to-one contrast ratio with significant brightness and true blacks while showing 60% greater dynamic range in HDR photos. The iPhone XS Max delivers over 3 million pixels and has the largest display ever in an iPhone, integrated into a footprint similar to iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone XS has cameras that offer advanced depth segmentation using the Neural Engine, Smart HDR creating photos with high dynamic range and great image detail, advanced bokeh in Portrait mode photos and adjustable depth of field in the Photos app.

A breakthrough new 12MP dual camera system with 2x optical zoom and dual optical image stabilisation. Smart HDR creates photos with more highlights and shadow detail. Larger and deeper pixels improve image fidelity and low-light performance.

Advanced depth segmentation in Portrait mode enables more sophisticated portraits with professional-level bokeh. New Depth Control allows users to dynamically adjust the depth of field in the Photos app both in real-time preview3 and post-capture to create portraits with a background blur. Portrait mode with Depth Control is also available on the TrueDepth camera for selfies, which includes Memoji and faster face tracking support for third-party ARKit apps.

The larger pixels and larger, faster sensor enable improved low-light performance and video stabilisation, as well as extended dynamic range for more highlight and shadow detail in video modes up to 30 frames per second. The iPhone XR

The iPhone XR integrates breakthrough technologies from the iPhone XS in an all-screen glass and aluminium design. The all-screen design pushes the iPhone XR 6.1" Liquid Retina display2 to the edges of the phone. Precision-milled glass, advanced pixel masking and sub-pixel antialiasing allows the display to follow the curves of the device, while a new backlight design enables the display to stretch into the corners.

The durable front glass screen is wrapped in a matching anodised band made from 7000 series aerospace-grade aluminium. Aluminium alloys in the 7000 series typically contain magnesium and copper in varying degrees.

The glass back enables wireless charging. A seven-layer colour process gives the back nuanced hues, while the aluminium band and camera trim are colour matched. This new design is splash- and water-resistant, with a rating of IP67, and protects against everyday spills1.

The iPhone XR supports fast and fluid iPhone gestures like tap to wake, swipe up to the home screen, swipe down to access notifications and the Control Center, and the new haptic touch feature for pressing on the home screen to instantly launch the camera or flashlight.

The iPhone XR features a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture wide-angle lens with an all-new sensor, delivering faster autofocus, while larger and deeper pixels as with the other two iPhones improve image fidelity and low-light performance on photos and videos. Improvements to the ISP, Neural Engine and improved software algorithms enable portrait photos with a bokeh effect. Smart high dynamic range (HDR) brings better highlight and shadow detail across photos. The phone also has the Depth Control feature.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max introduce Gigabit-class LTE for even faster download speeds4 and Dual SIM5 through the use of a nano-SIM and digital eSIM. The iPhone XR uses LTE Advanced for fast download speeds4 and also offers Dual SIM5.

Compared to the iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone XR has up to 90 minutes more battery life. The iPhone XS offers 30 minutes longer life than the iPhone X, and the iPhone XS Max offers 90 minutes more life than the iPhone X between charges.

The iPhone XR comes in six finishes: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED. A portion of proceeds for iPhone XR (PRODUCT)RED purchases will go directly to Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants that provide testing, counselling, treatment and prevention programmes with a specific focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies.

The new Apple watches can call someone if you fall

Apple has introduced Apple Watch Series 4, a family of Apple watches which have been re-engineered to help users stay connected, be more active and manage their health in new ways.

While retaining the original iconic design, the fourth-generation Apple Watch has a display that is over 30% larger and a thinner, smaller case. Apple Watch Series 4 with watchOS 5 brings advanced activity and communications features, along with a new accelerometer and gyroscope which are able to detect hard falls, and an electrical heart rate sensor that can take an electrocardiogram (ECG) using the new ECG app1.
Source: Apple. The redesigned Apple Watch Series 4 has a larger display with thinner borders and curved corners.
Source: Apple. The redesigned Apple Watch
Series 4 has a larger display with
thinner borders and curved corners.

Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO said, “The completely redesigned Apple Watch Series 4 continues to be an indispensable communication and fitness companion, and now with the addition of groundbreaking features, like fall detection and the first-ever ECG app offered directly to consumers, it also becomes an intelligent guardian for your health.”

From September 14, Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) will be available to order in 26 countries and territories while the Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) will be available to order in 16 countries and territories. Both models will be available in stores beginning September 21.

Apple Watch Series 4 comes in two sizes, 40mm and 44mm. The back of Apple Watch Series 4 is composed of black ceramic and sapphire crystal, allowing radio waves to easily pass through the front and back for better cellular service. The digital crown now includes haptic feedback, offering a more responsive feel through the sensation of incremental clicks.

The speaker is 50% louder, optimised for phone calls, Siri and Walkie-Talkie, and the microphone has been relocated, to reduce echo for better sound quality. The device includes the S4 chip with a custom 64-bit dual-core processor, delivering twice the speed while maintaining the same all-day battery life.2

The user interface has been optimised for the larger display, allowing for app icons and fonts that are bigger as well as easier to read and tap, while complications - functions in a watch that do not tell time, but add functionality - have been enhanced to be more precise and informative. New watch faces take full advantage of the Series 4 display, from the customisable Infograph face, to the Breathe face, where the animation is timed around a deep breath. Additionally, a suite of motion faces, including Vapor, Liquid Metal, Fire and Water react uniquely with the curved edges of the case.

Health capabilities have been enriched. Apple Watch Series 4 enables users to take an ECG reading right from the wrist using the new ECG app via electrodes built into the digital crown and a new electrical heart rate sensor in the back crystal. With the app, users touch the digital crown and after 30 seconds, receive a heart rhythm classification. It can identify if the heart is beating in a normal pattern or whether there are signs of atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that could lead to major health complications. All recordings, their associated classifications and any noted symptoms are stored in the Health app in a PDF that can be shared with physicians.

With watchOS 5, Apple Watch intermittently analyses heart rhythms in the background and sends a notification if an irregular heart rhythm is detected3. It can also alert the user if the heart rate exceeds or falls below a specified threshold.

The fall detection feature utilises an advanced accelerometer and gyroscope, which measures up to 32 G-forces, along with custom algorithms to identify when hard falls occur. By analysing wrist trajectory and impact acceleration, Apple Watch can send the user an alert after a fall that can be dismissed or used to initiate a call to emergency services. If Apple Watch senses immobility for 60 seconds after the notification, it will automatically call emergency services and send a message along with location to emergency contacts.

With watchOS 5, Apple Watch becomes an even better fitness and workout companion. Battery life has increased to 6 hours. Activity competitions allow users to challenge other Apple Watch wearers, automatic workout detection provides an alert to start a workout while giving retroactive credit, and Yoga and Hiking are new dedicated workout types that accurately track the number of active calories burned and exercise minutes earned. Runners will appreciate the cadence feature for indoor and outdoor runs, and pace alerts for outdoor runs.

Customers can reach their friends with a tap of the wrist through Walkie-Talkie, a watch-to-watch connection that works over Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity4. The Siri watch face is more predictive and proactive, offering shortcuts and actionable content from third-party apps. WatchOS 5 also lets users listen to podcasts with Apple Podcasts on Apple Watch, and stream any podcast in the catalogue by using Siri. With Apple Watch Series 4, enriched complications offer a more detailed view of helpful third-party apps like Dexcom, which allows for continuous glucose monitoring, or Streaks, which shows daily progress on tasks.

Along with three aluminum finishes anodised in silver, gold and space gray, Apple Watch Series 4 now comes in gold stainless steel with a matching Milanese band, joining the silver and space black stainless steel models. A new collection of bands debut in Q3/Q4; all bands will work with any generation of Apple Watch.

A new Apple Watch Nike+ collection features redesigned Nike watch faces which match new band colours, including a Pure Platinum/Black Sport Band and a Summit White Sport Loop with reflective yarn. Parallels rolls out Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac

Parallels, a global cross-platform solutions provider and creator of bestselling software for running Windows applications on a Mac, has launched Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac, which supports macOS Mojave-readiness.

Upgrading to Parallels Desktop 14 offers significant storage savings, faster launch times, improved graphics and the latest versions of Parallels Toolbox for Windows or Mac.

“Millions of Parallels Desktop customers highly value performance and efficiency,” said Jack Zubarev, Parallels President.

“With Parallels Desktop 14, we’ve taken those to the next level by focusing on graphics and storage, allowing customers to save as much as 20 GB of disk space while enjoying the best-ever performance. Personal productivity enhancements include more Windows features available on Mac devices. Touch Bar support for Windows applications — such as OneNote or Quicken — enablesc ustomers to add their favourite applications to the Mac Touch Bar so their shortcuts are at their fingertips.”

Typically, virtual machines are large, taking anywhere from 15–100 GBs of space, or more. To manage two different storage mechanisms at work (Windows and Mac), newly-engineered storage optimisation takes both Windows and Mac mechanisms into account which can result in significant disk space savings.*

The new Free Up Disk Space dialogue that suggests storage-saving actions now handles multiple virtual machines better. Newly-created snapshots occupy up to 15% less disk space.

Parallels Desktop 14 now enables customers to use Microsoft Ink to edit Microsoft Office for Windows documents on a Mac, including pressure-sensitive support in applications such as PowerPoint, Microsoft Edge, CorelDRAW, Fresh Paint, Leonardo, openCanvas and Photoshop for Windows.**

Preconfigured Touch Bar sets have been added to Parallels Desktop 14 for Microsoft Visio and OneNote, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, Quicken, QuickBooks and Visual Studio. They join current Parallels Desktop Touch Bar sets for Windows applications, including: Office 2016 (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Windows Start Menu and desktop (Cortana, Task View and Task Bar pinned elements), File Explorer (File Open and Save As settings), ArcGIS and web browsers (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Vivaldi).

The Parallels Desktop Touch Bar Wizard makes it easy for users to customise the Touch Bar for Windows applications. Additionally, with the use of Touch Bar XML Authoring, users can further personalise the Touch Bar with their own function key shortcuts.

Parallels Desktop 14 supports Dark Mode, a Mojave feature. Quick Look issued on Windows files now shows quick actions. Support for additional Mojave features, which are currently in development, will be tested, finalised and introduced around the forthcoming public release of Mojave. The Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac installation image, which is notarised by Apple, will be seen by users when it is installed on Mojave.

Parallels Desktop 14 now features improved OpenGL support for enhanced graphics, with improvements in SketchUp 2017/2018, CTVox, DIALux 8 and OriginLab.

All view modes have been improved in terms of speed and memory usage, which is especially important when working on multiple high-resolution external displays, including those of 5K resolutions.

Unused virtual video memory is now effectively returned to Mac system memory. Auto mode for graphics allows Windows to use more than 2 GB of Mac system memory for video purposes, while allowing Windows applications to use that memory when possible.***

Additionally, users now get a better frame rate in videoconferencing and can use shared camera technology with cameras that support up to 4K resolutions.

Parallels Desktop for Mac Business Edition

The new Business Edition features enhanced management, plus security and licensing portals. Additional improvements include:

• Smart card readers which are now automatically available in both Mac and Windows for faster access (if enabled).

• The ability for administrators to invite users via email and assign separate administrators for sub-licences for improved efficiency.****

• The ability to replace existing virtual machines in Deployment Mode to streamline productivity.

• Applications deployed in Single Application mode which start faster, along with a new splash screen.

• The Parallels “My Account” portal has been redesigned to be optimised for popular use cases.****

New and popular Parallels Toolbox tools include:

• Screenshot Page – Capture and print lengthy webpages that do not fit onto your screen. Take and print screenshots of webpages in one click—even for pages longer than the browser screen.

• Free Memory – Reclaim RAM memory and optimise its consumption on your Mac. Add the Free Memory tool to the macOS menu bar to check how much RAM is available with just a click to reclaim available memory.

• Resize Images – Batch convert images to a desired file size and format. Drag the source images to the tool’s window, specify the desired dimensions/size and output location, and click.

Parallels Desktop 14 performance has improved significantly:

• Up to 200% performance improvement on the iMac Pro (audio and video encoding, AI, 3D modelling, cryptography and other complex math calculations workloads) thanks to AVX512 Intel Cannon Lake processor instructions set support

• Up to 80% faster application launch

• Up to 10% faster boot time

• Up to 30% faster suspend operation on the Apple File System (APFS) partition

• Up to 130% more frames per second in Shared Camera mode

• Up to 17% more frames per second in Coherence view mode

A CPU usage indicator has been added to the title bar to give a better understanding of high CPU usage in Windows. Resource Monitor is completely redesigned to show Mac resources along with the impact that multiple virtual machines have on them.

Parallels is a global cross-platform solutions provider that makes it possible for customers to use applications and files they need on any device or operating system.

Apple has introduced Apple Watch Series 3, adding built-in cellular to the smart watch. Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular allows users to stay connected, make calls, receive texts and more, even without an iPhone nearby.

The third-generation Apple Watch is billed as a health and fitness companion with intelligent coaching features, water resistance of up to 50m1 and a new barometric altimeter that measures relative elevation.

Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two models, one with GPS alone and one with both GPS and cellular. Both feature a 70% faster dual-core processor and new wireless chip.

“We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO. “Apple Watch Series 3 combined with the power of watchOS 4 is the ultimate device for a healthy life.”

The combination of cellular and watchOS 4 will allow Apple Music users to stream 40 million songs right from their wrist.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) features a full LTE and UMTS cellular radio that switches seamlessly to cellular when it is away from an iPhone. Customers have the ability to make cellular calls directly with Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) and, when paired with AirPods, enjoy a seamless and fully wireless experience. The watch shares the same number as the owner's iPhone. To help get customers started, participating carriers are also offering special introductory cellular plans at launch.

Apple also pioneered an antenna design that uses the display itself as both a transmitting and receiving element for LTE and UMTS, while introducing a built-in eSIM that is over one-hundredth the size of a traditional SIM card. This makes over-the-air activation possible without compromising on space2.

Powering Apple Watch Series 3 is the S3, Apple’s third-generation architecture featuring a faster dual-core processor, which allows for quicker app launch times and smoother graphics, and, for the first time, enables Siri to speak using the built-in speaker. Apple designed a new custom wireless chip called W2, making Wi-Fi 85% faster and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 50% more power efficient, while still providing all-day battery life and keeping the size virtually the same as before. Apple Watch Series 3 also features a barometric altimeter that assists with tracking activity, flights climbed and outdoor workouts, including elevation gain.

WatchOS 4 features an updated Heart Rate app, giving more insights to heart rate, including measurements during resting, workout, recovery, walking and Breathe sessions. Customers can also choose to receive a notification when their heart rate is elevated above a specific threshold while inactive. Other watchOS 4 highlights include the proactive Siri watch face that displays the information users need most throughout the day, an enhanced Workout app with new interface, custom High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout type and auto-sets for pool swims. With GymKit, users will soon enjoy the ability to connect to their favourite cardio equipment and experience two-way synchronisation of data with just a tap3.

The redesigned Music app experience automatically syncs playlists like New Music Mix and Favourites Mix, along with the user’s most listened to music. Later this year, Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) will stream music, giving users access to any song from Apple Music, straight from the wrist. The new Radio app also enables listeners to access Beats 1 live or any Apple Music radio station while away from iPhone or Wi-Fi.

In addition to silver or space grey aluminium, Apple Watch Series 3 now comes in gold aluminium, along with silver or space black stainless steel cases. All pair with an assortment of new bands and styles. The Woven Nylon is updated with a new pattern and the lightweight Sport Loop effortlessly adjusts to fit wrists.

Apple Watch Nike+ has been popular, and this fall (roughly Q3 to Q4), the partnership continues with both models of Series 3 pairing with a new pure platinum/black Nike Sport Band or Sport Loop in exclusive grey. The Nike Run Club app has been updated to introduce new features such as Audio Guided Runs that deliver coaching and motivation from Nike’s elite coaches, athletes and entertainers, and Cheers which makes running more fun by allowing friends to send audio-based cheers as motivation. Just Do It Sundays continues to provide inspiration and rewards from participation in the world’s largest running community.

Apple Watch Hermès models come with built-in cellular and pair with a collection of new bands, including the Single Tour Rallye in perforated Gala calfskin, inspired by the classic Hermès driving glove, and the Single Tour Eperon d’Or, in printed Gala calfskin, inspired by the equestrian scarf pattern designed by Henri d’Origny in 1974. A new watch face, inspired by the Carrick Hermès watch, also designed by Henri d’Origny in 1993, completes the existing selection of Hermès watch faces.
