An invitation to go Way Back to a simpler time

Source: Ben Barbic/Ajax. Way Back is an invitation to go back to simpler, more carefree times. Music single cover.
Source: Ben Barbic/Ajax. Way Back is an invitation to go back to simpler, more carefree times.

Reggae/hip-hop artist Ben Barbic has dropped Way Back, a homage to a long friendship with producer Ajax and the first posthumous collaboration between the two.

Barbic has known Ajax since the age of two. Despite Barbic being based in the Bay area and Ajax relocating to Manhattan, both maintained an unwavering dedication to music. The genesis of Way Back came about after Barbic explored Ajax's catalogue of instrumentals after Ajax passed away in late 2023. One riddim* resonated in particular for Barbic, reminding him of classic hip-hop and the collaboration between Damian Marley and Nas in Nah Mean.

Barbic talked about the simplicity and innocence of youth, and the nostalgic longing for the carefree times of the past. Way Back is both for Ajax and an ode to the universal yearning for a return to a time when life was less complicated. Recordings of Ajax, taken from decades-old home movies, can be heard in the second verse.

"Collaborating on Way Back was a profound experience for me," said Barbic. "It's a tribute to Ajax's experience on my life and our shared journey through music. Sometimes, we crave to go 'way back' to relive those cherished moments."

*Riddim in Jamaican music refers to an instrumental accompaniment to a song and is typically more repetitive.

BATTEN Girls release volumetric video-based dance video

BATTEN Records, the private music label of the BATTEN Girls, has released a new dance video called OiSa Volumetric Video ver..

This video is created using a high-resolution 3D space created from image data that comes from 100 specialised 4K cameras and Canon's volumetric technology. The result can be enjoyed from different 3D perspectives.

Instead of stitching together multiple images from different cameras, volumetric video creates a 3D space using data from captured images. This enables video to be generated from any viewpoint within the space.

Canon created a dedicated studio for the technology in Kawasaki in July 2020.

YouTube Hong Kong Rewind 2019 reveals this year’s top trending videos, including Top 10 Trending Videos, Top 10 Trending Local Music Videos, Top 10 Trending International Music Videos, and Top 10 Emerging Channels.

Music has always been Hong Kong users’ favourite content, from music videos, live performances, remixes, and even cover songs. Hongkongers also use YouTube to discover, stay informed with what’s happening in the city, and to learn. Over 60% of local users said they have watched original videos on YouTube.

While many tune in to YouTube to watch livestreams and news on mobile, local creators are also inspired by current affairs in the city. This year, Jason’s video 防暴要求我落車?係咪想打我或屈我襲警? which was about his encounter with Hong Kong riot police in Causeway Bay topped the charts as the most viewed original video in Hong Kong.

Other videos discussing the city’s trending topics such as memehk’s video about the Andy Hui and Jacqueline Wong scandal 許志安和黃心穎偷食的教訓〈蕭若元:八卦蕭析〉2019-04-16 and FHProductionHK’s video about the behaviour of Chinese aunties 大媽的道理 made it to this year’s list as well.

Hong Kong people also like learning from YouTube. Coffee Lam’s workout tutorials have made it on the chart for two consecutive years, with her 30-minute fitness video 30分鐘全身消脂增肌運動 (一個月內見效) ranking fourth in 2019.

Local artists have also started uploading lifestyle vlogs and parody videos on YouTube to better connect with their fans. Hins Cheung, for example, saw 張敬軒有咩問題?惡搞容祖兒 Pretty Crazy MV parodying Joey Yung’s music video take the second spot on the Top 10 Trending Videos this year.

Topping this year’s Top 10 Trending Local Music Videos is the orchestral music video of Glory to Hong Kong (《願榮光歸香港》管弦樂團及合唱團版) by Black Blorchestra. Other non-mainstream music videos that have made it onto the chart are JB’s 潮共, LMF’s W.T.F.H.K. and NEI FEI WO’s 和你飛.

Meanwhile, the TV series theme song Can You Hear by Kayee Tam took second spot, followed by other Cantopop including Leo Ku and Nancy Wu’s 亂世情侶, and Sammi Cheung’s 我們都是這樣長大.

Hongkongers are also big fans of international music, especially creative works by Asian artists. Of the Top Trending International Music Videos, seven were created by Asian artists and singer-songwriters, including Jay Chou’s 說好不哭 featuring special guest Ashin from Mayday, which attracted 10 million views globally in just two days; followed by K-pop group BTS’ Boy With Luv and Eric Chou’s 怎麼了.

JJ Lin creates song inspired by Jewel

Changi Airport Group (CAG) has partnered Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin (林俊杰) on his latest composition – The Right Time (‘对的时间点’).

The song is inspired by Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel), which opened in April.
Lin revealed that he felt a wave of emotions when he first saw the artist’s impression of the Rain Vortex (the iconic waterfall), which ultimately led to the piece.

Lin and Xiaohan (小寒) contributed music and lyrics respectively for The Right Time. Filmed in July, the accompanying video stars Lin and regionally-acclaimed actor Christopher Lee. It features Jewel’s waterfall and its surrounding greenery.

Lin said, “I believe in life there's always a perfect time and place for magical moments and things to happen; for dreams to take flight, and for love stories to be formed. Through the song, I hope to share the beauty of unplanned encounters, and for everyone to explore the connection between choice and destiny.”

He added, “Producing a song for the Rain Vortex is an honour to me, because I believe that Jewel is a landmark that will help attract tourists from all over the world to Singapore.”

CAG’s Group Senior VP for Corporate & Marketing Communications Ivan Tan said, “As a Singaporean brand, we are very proud to have worked with a home-grown and world-renowned talent. JJ is a successful artiste with global reach and we believe the video will amplify Jewel’s unique brilliance and charm. We hope that through the universal language of music, more people will come to know Jewel from a different perspective.”

Lin remembers going to the airport to hang out with friends at the fast food restaurants and cafes, and to study for exams. “It was like a meeting spot for me and my classmates,” he said.

Lin also feels a special connection with Changi Airport because it has become such a familiar spot for him due to his frequent travels. He said, “I see Changi Airport as a hub for people around the world to meet and form new connections, both socially and professionally. It is indeed a place of sanctuary, for weary travellers to rest and recover in between long hours of travel.”

With over 100 airlines connecting Singapore to 380 cities worldwide, Changi Airport handles about 7,400 flights every week, or about one every 80 seconds. Including Jewel, Changi Airport’s retail and dining offerings total more than 500 stores and over 260 food and beverage outlets.

Details:

A 15-second teaser of the music video can be viewed on Changi Airport’s Facebook page, with the complete song to be launched globally on 26 August on all major music platforms.

On the same day, the music video for The Right Time will be available on Changi Airport’s social media channels*.

Singapore International Jazz Festival introduces new acts

Source: SING JAZZ. Sasha.
Source: SING JAZZ. Sasha.

Friday night at the Singapore International Jazz Festival (SING JAZZ) 2018 is set to be a bumper start for the weekend musical marathon, with four additional acts announced to perform alongside their already stellar lineup at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

French artist Sebastian Tellier and Brazilian guitar legend Paulinho Garcia will grace The Main Stage on Friday evening, whilst international DJs Sasha and Ferry Corsten will elevate after-party activities at The Late Show.

6 April – The Main Stage

One of the acts kicking off the festival is Sebastien Tellier, considered one of the most significant French artists of the last decade. He is the 2000s' romantic dandy, a real icon proved by his musical genius though enigmatic nonchalance and his sense of fun. His live performances are legendary – bizarre and beautiful in equal measure, say organisers.

Returning to Singapore is fan-favourite Paulinho Garcio, a Brazilian guitarist and vocalist. He has been described as “the epitome of the solitary troubadour… [whose] languid chords and cleanly plucked lines illuminate the complicated rhythms with the cool clarity of moonlight.”

6 April – The Late Show

Grammy Award nominee, four-time International Dance Music Award winner, Sasha will debut in Singapore at the event. Fans can expect an experience similar to the party to Sasha's famous Last Night on Earth parties.

Another addition to The Late Show is Ferry Corsten from the Netherlands, who is to deliver a trance and progressive house DJ set. Corsten's skills lie in his ability to coax the maximum emotional impact from electronic dance music of all genres, not just trance, but also progressive-house and electro.

An addition to 2018 is the Festival Village at the Event Square on the Ebenex Stage by the Marina Bay waterfront. The fringe event will showcase 16 local and regional bands, and will run from 4 April to 8 April from 2pm to 10.30pm.

Spotify unveils 25 under 25 list for Singapore

Spotify today revealed the list of the 25 most influential artists under the age of 25 who are dominating the music industry in Singapore.

Eighteen-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes tops the list, boasting 25 million Spotify listeners each month and over 500 million streams of his smash, Stitches. Following Mendes are: Ariana Grande, Martin Garrix, Justin Bieber and Alessia Cara. Also included are mainstays Gentle Bones and Fifth Harmony.

To determine the 25 under 25 list, music experts at Spotify looked at a variety of factors such as the number of people listening to an artist each month on Spotify, artists with songs featured in Spotify’s top playlists and top-performing artists by genre.

The top 25 list also includes newcomers such as Linying. This indie singer-songwriter has a spot on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart. “These young artists have broken boundaries and are certainly leading global culture regardless of age, making an impact across the world with their creativity and music. We are excited to see music from all over the world – international, regional and local – resonate amongst our Spotify users in Singapore. With so many young listeners on Spotify, it's always fascinating to hone in on the peer artists they're listening to and looking up to," said Chee Meng Tan, Director of Label Relations, Spotify, APAC.

Spotify's 25 Under 25 (Singapore Edition):

1. Shawn Mendes: Mendes started out posting six-second Vine clips of himself singing covers, and now, at 18, the singer-songwriter from Toronto fills major venues and attracts 25 million Spotify listeners each month. Multiple tracks from Mendes' sophomore album, Illuminate, which arrived in September, are popular on Spotify, with notable standout, Treat You Better on track to give Mendes' smash Stitches (500 million plus streams) a run for its money.

2. Ariana Grande: Multiple tracks from the 23-year-old singer’s latest album became instant hits; Dangerous Woman and Into You have clocked more than 200 million streams each, and Side to Side (with Nicki Minaj), is a top 10 song on Spotify’s global chart. Grande has 27 million monthly listeners.

3. Martin Garrix: Having reached electronic dance music (EDM) stardom at 17 thanks to several remixes, Dutch artist Garrix, now 20, continues to be at the top with banger (Editor's note: very good songIn The Name of Love, which is in Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist. With 21 million monthly listeners, Garrix is in Spotify’s top twenty most popular artists of all time.

4. Justin Bieber: Bieber has been on a hot streak since his comeback Diplo/Skrillex collaboration Where Are Ü Now dropped in early 2015. With follow-up monster solo hits that just keep coming at us, like Love YourselfWhat Do You Mean? and Sorry - which have all passed the 700 million streams mark - there’s just no stopping the Biebs. Bieber’s collaboration with Major Lazer and MØ, Cold Water, is currently streaming more than 2.5 million times a day.

5. Alessia Cara: This 20-year-old from Ontario, Canada might have made a name for herself with a song about her disdain for teen parties, but has risen further since the success of Here, Spotify’s most viral song in the US last year (and No. 5 globally), the rhythm & blues (R&B) singer has attracted more than 13 million monthly listeners. Cara’s track, Scars to Your Beautiful, is a favourite in Spotify's Today’s Top Hits playlist at the moment.

6. Charlie Puth: With 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, singer-songwriter Puth is one of the top players in pop music today. He gained worldwide recognition for the Wiz Khalifa song See You Again which Puth wrote, produced and sang on. His duets with leading ladies like Meghan Trainor (Marvin Gaye) and Selena Gomez (We Don’t Talk Anymore) turned to pop gold, with the latter seemingly living permanently on Spotify's global charts.

7. Fifth Harmony: This all-girl R&B group has more than 16 million Spotify listeners each month. The jam Work From Home has racked up more than half a billion listens and was a playlist staple over the summer in the US and UK (much like their Worth It from the year before). The current favourite is All In My Head (Flex) (featuring Fetty Wap).

8. Hailee Steinfeld: Steinfeld’s latest track, Starving, already has more than 160 million streams and a flight up Spotify’s global chart. The 19-year-old Oscar-nominated actress had a breakout single, Love Myself (210 million streams), last year. Steinfeld, who also starred as one of the Bardon Bellas in the accapella-celebrating movie Pitch Perfect 2, has 17 million monthly listeners.

9. Flume: Australian deejay/producer Flume just picked up 11 nominations for Australia’s Grammy- equivalent awards show, the ARIAs. Spotify listeners can’t get enough of Flume’s Say It (featuring Tove Lo) and Never Be Like You (featuring Kai). With 13 million monthly listeners, Flume (real name Harley Edward Streten), is one of the top EDM artists on the scene.

10. Zara Larsson: After winning a TV talent show in her native Sweden at 10, Larsson disappeared, grew up a bit, honed her singing chops, then made it her mission to tear up the world stage of pop music. Never Forget You (385 million streams) and Lush Life (485 million streams) feature Larsson, now 18, as a genre-bending artist, blending pop, EDM and even hiphop. Larsson attracts 18 million monthly listeners and her current track, Aint My Fault, is killing it on Spotify's Today’s Top Hits playlist.

11: Joel Adams: Singer-songwriter Adams is 19, hails from Brisbane, Australia, and has only ever released one song on Spotify. His sole ballad, Please Don’t Go, has received around 210 million streams. Now with 10 million monthly listeners, a contract with independent record label Will Walker records and a spot on Charlie Puth’s North America tour, Adams is the man of the moment.

12: Desiigner: When Panda took off earlier this year, hiphop artist Desiigner established himself as the breakout star of 2016. That song is now approaching half a billion streams. Signed to Kanye West’s record label G.O.O.D. Music, the 19-year-old from Brooklyn in New York, the US, is now scaling Spotify's charts with Timmy Turner. Desiigner (real name is Sidney Royel Selby III), attracts more than 13 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

13: Selena Gomez: Selena Gomez shed the last remnants of her children’s TV star past with the release of her sultry, coming-of-age album Revival. With multiple songs surpassing 200 million streams like Hands to Myself, Same Old Love and Good For You (currently at about 330 million streams), Gomez, 24, is now one of the leading ladies of pop music. She averages 2.5 million streams a day and listeners are besotted with her current collaboration with Puth, We Don’t Talk Anymore.

14. Halsey: Many Spotify listeners have followed pop singer Halsey’s career with great interest over the last couple of years, streaming New Americana, some 130 million times. But it’s her guest spot on the world’s biggest hit of the moment, The Chainsmokers’ Closer that brought Halsey’s stunning voice to the masses. Her solo music now averages 1.5 million streams a day, yet it feels like the 22-year-old from New Jersey is only just getting started.

15. Demi Lovato: Lovato commanded everyone’s attention with her assertive, no holds-barred album, Confident, which produced the mega title track as well as last year’s summer standout, Cool for The Summer (180 million streams). Listeners are also embracing Lovato’s Body Say, in a big way. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter attracts 10 million monthly listeners.

16. Cheat Codes: When Los Angeles, California electronic trio Cheat Codes released the song Sex earlier this year, it resonated in a big way with listeners in Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. The track borrows from Salt N Peppa’s 1990 hit Let’s Talk About Sex and has amassed more than 320 million streams. Cheat Codes averages 15 million monthly users and right now listeners like Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) featuring Dante Klein.

17. Daya: Singer-songwriter Daya can be heard all over The Chainsmokers’ summer 2016 hit, Don’t Let Me Down, but in the summer of the year before, her own Hide Away (215 million streams) was already setting her stage for superstardom. The 18-year-old talent from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, whose real name is Martine Tandon, just dropped her full-length debut album Sit Still, Look Pretty and the title track has had an impressive run in Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist.

18. BTS: This seven-member South Korean boy band are not only known for their musical talent but also for their large social media presence. Their lead hit single Blood Sweat & Tears from their second studio album Wings is fast becoming a fan favourite. It has received over 8 million streams since it was launched on Spotify.

19. EXO: EXO, short for Exoplanet, is a boyband known for a unique mix of rap, hiphop, rock, R&B and most importantly choreography. The band has been one of the most popular subjects on the Internet ever since they debuted in 2012. Their latest single Dancing King has been bringing in the stream numbers since launch, as it is now shy from 3 million streams.

20. BLACKPINK: BLACKPINK released their debut single album Square One followed by their second single album Square Two. Although a recent newcomer, BLACKPINK's debut hit singles - Whistle and Boombayah - secured the top positions on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. They were fastest act to hold such spots, and the third Korean artist to do so.

21. Linying: Linying first gained recognition from her collaborations with European House giants, Felix Jaehn and Lost Frequencies, leading to a No. 1 peak on Hype Machine and over 10 million plays on Spotify. She released her first single Sticky Leaves late last year, landing on Spotify’s viral charts globally. Her current popular hit single on Spotify is Alpine.

22. 周興哲 (Eric Chou): Chou’s mother insisted that he take up classical piano. From there, this artist found his passion in composing his own songs, whilst capturing the raw emotions of life. His second album What Love Has Taught Us... (愛情教會我們的事) carries one of his proudest works Let’s Not Be Friends in The Future (以後別做朋友); from being picked as the original soundtrack (OST) for a prominent Taiwanese drama to being one of his most streamed songs on Spotify.

23. DEAN: Having written chart toppers for K-Pop boy bands such as EXO, Block B and VIXX, DEAN has proven to be a hit song maker. Earlier this year, he dropped his EP, 130 Mood: TRBL, with notable standout hits such as Pour Up and D (Half Moon). He performed during SXSW 2016 in the US this year, a first for an Asian artist, and followed it by performing at K-CON.

24. Gentle Bones: At 22, Joel Tan aka Gentle Bones saw his recent extended play (EP) Geniuses & Thieves hit No. 1 upon its release on June 2016 with the hits Run Tell Daddy and Geniuses & Thieves. Two back-to-back sold-out concerts were staged in Singapore in June.

25. MYRNE: MYRNE released his debut four-track EP Softsins on Mad Decent in November 2015, inaugurating himself as one of the only Asian artists on the roster. No stranger to the festival/club circuit, his Feels Right (Radio Edit) has garnered over 2 million streams in a short period.

Spotify is now available in 60 markets globally with more than 100 million active users*, and over 40 million paying subscribers**.

Singapore International Festival of Music all set for October performances

The Singapore International Festival of Music (SIFOM). Singapore’s first-ever classical music festival, is back for a second year. Themed Myths and Legends, the festival seeks to explore classical music inspired by folklore and fairy tales. The event will kick off with free public outreach programmes, masterclasses, and ticketed orchestral, musical theatre and vocal concerts from 13 October to 30 October.

SIFOM 2016 will include the festival’s own orchestra, SIFOM Orchestra, the SIFOM Ensemble and Ding Yi Music Company – representing the country’s best young musicians, alongside internationally-acclaimed guests from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), a leading chamber orchestra.

SIFOM, in collaboration with the Arts House and OperaViva, aims to place Singapore on the world map of classical music capitals and bring new audiences to concert halls. “The Singaporean brand is undoubtedly an international one. By establishing Singapore as the centre of classical music in the region, SIFOM hopes to further cement Singapore’s global reputation as a major cultural hub,” said Grammy-nominated Singaporean conductor Darrell Ang, SIFOM’s Artistic Director.

The festival will open with a symphonic concert featuring the resident SIFOM Orchestra side-by-side with members of the COE, under the baton of Maestro Ang. At SIFOM, COE will present a story told through French composer Maurice Ravel's orchestration of tales from Mother Goose: Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, the Princess of the Pagodas, Beauty and the Beast, and The Fairy Garden.

Two young opera stars from the Musical Olympus Foundation will take centrestage on 13 and 15 October with their favourite showpieces. Chinese bass-baritone Li Ao, who won Placido Domingo's Operalia competition, plays the devil Mephistopheles in a famous aria from Gounod's opera Faust, in which he advises a woman to remain chaste until marriage. Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, from Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, will sing Cinderella's closing aria from Rossini's opera on the fairytale: now married to the Prince, Cinderella seeks pardon for her evil relatives who have done her wrong.

Maverick violinist Aleksey Semenenko, who bagged the silver medal at the recent Queen Elisabeth Competition, promises to set the stage on fire with music from Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy. Semenenko will also start his evening concert on 13 October with a pre-concert recital featuring music inspired by legends, followed by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic retelling of the adventures of Sindbad the Sailor and the 1001 Arabian Nights.

A story of good triumphing over evil, the story of Ikan Girl reminds one of patience and kindness and the perils of engaging in evil deeds, especially mistreating a fellow being. Inspired by a Malay ancient poem known as the Syair Bidasari, this story is a multidisciplinary performance that incorporates movement vocabulary from Malay dance, Indian bharatanatyam and contemporary dance genres, plus original music composed by Syafiqah Adha Sallehin, Artist-in-Residence at SIFOM 2016. The music will be performed ‘live’ by classical and traditional musicians. Percussionist extraordinaire Ramu Thiruyanam will also make a special appearance.

Chinese chamber music ensemble Ding Yi Music Company from Singapore and Song Hong Chamber Music of Vietnam will perform 五 + 5 = ?.

On 13 October, Hamburg baroque orchestra Elbipolis presides over an experimental concert series, with Tim Exile’s and Brezel Göring’s music synthesised in a style that blurs the lines between a formal concert setting and a club atmosphere.

On 19 October, listen to works from SIFOM Young Composers, who have created their own musical pieces in a performance called New Music in a Mythic Landscape, inspired by Singapore’s scenery and features.

“Classical music should not limit itself to the confines of a concert hall. By bringing it to the heartlands, we hope to promote classical music as an accessible art-form, and to nurture a new generation of listeners to classical music today,” said Ang.

Through its Outreach Programmes, SIFOM musicians will bring excerpts of the main programmes – such as Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite to various community venues in the heartlands, in parks and malls, at libraries and schools.

SIFOM will also collaborate with Sentire Singapore on a programme for special-needs children. The interaction is designed to help the children to express themselves and develop their artistic capabilities. Some of the students will be given the opportunity to experience their music performed ‘live’ at The Arts House on 19 October.
