Rousing countdown to Alibaba's 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival

Source: Alibaba Group. The 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival was launched on October 20 in Hong Kong.
From left: Jet Jing, VP of Alibaba Group; Maggie Wu, CFO of Alibaba Group; Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group; Joe Tsai, Executive Vice Chairman of Alibaba Group; and Chris Tung, CMO of Alibaba Group.

Alibaba Group has revealed more features and highlights of its 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival Countdown Gala. Guests will include basketball player Kobe Bryant and band OneRepublic. There will also be some surprise guests on the night, to be held in Shenzhen on November 10, Alibaba said.

Performers already announced include Katy Perry, who is also the gala’s Global Ambassador, American sitcom 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs, and 2010 World Cup Golden Boot-winning footballer Thomas Müller.

This year’s gala reflects Alibaba’s globalisation efforts, as demonstrated in the range of participating brands and merchants, in addition to the lineup of international guests. The festival offers consumers much more than shopping, Alibaba said. In addition to international celebrities, music idols and football stars, the gala will also introduce a wide range of multimedia activities to engage consumers globally.

Chris Tung, CMO, Alibaba Group said, “The gala will be a global carnival, a world-class performance that involves the audience throughout the event with many touchpoints and is like nothing else you would have experienced. Last year was an incredible show and attracted attention from around the world, and this year we are going to surpass this and push the boundaries of entertainment by co-creating programmes with global brands and production studios. So make sure that you are ready and tuned in to get the party started on November 10th!”

As the director of this year’s gala, Los Angeles, US-based TV producer David Hill commented: “I’m excited to have been brought in to be part of something that is so unique. Combining Alibaba’s technology with my experience at other global events we are going to develop a spectacle like no other. This is going to be entertainment that goes beyond expectations and we have a chance to continue to build the legacy of this event. November 10th is eagerly awaited both in China and throughout the world - I’m looking forward to working with the team over the coming days to ensure that people aren’t disappointed.”

Hill has produced live events as varied as several NFL Super Bowls, the 88th Oscars, and American Idol.

This year the gala will redefine interactive entertainment by engaging consumers at an unprecedented level. One example is that viewers will be able to take part in competitions by shaking their smartphones equipped with Taobao or Tmall apps during the event, with big prizes to be won or even the chance to win the celebrities’ clothes right off their backs. Viewers will also have the chance to play the role of director in certain gala segments where they can let the story play out the way they want it to.

In a new element for this year, there will be four one-minute advertising time slots available for free in the categories of consumers, brands, non-profit organisations and 11.11 participants. The winners in each category will be chosen as the most innovative and most inspiring, and will be given the opportunity to have their ad videos played in front of an audience of hundreds of millions.

This year the gala will be held for the first time in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre. The event will be broadcast live by official media partner Zhejiang Satellite TV. Alibaba’s media assets like Youku Tudou, Tmall TV Box and UC Web will also be conducting live broadcasts of the gala.

Last year the four-hour gala was held in Beijing, at the Water Cube and was watched by around 100 million viewers. TMall generated RMB91.21 billion (around US$14.34 billion) in gross merchandise volume (GMV) on 11.11 last year, surpassing US online shopping volumes on Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Over 40,000 merchants and 5,000 global brands from 25 countries participated in the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival last year.

This gala, plus mobile live streaming, virtual reality shopping, interactive games and an eight-hour livestreamed fashion show leading up to November 11 underscore the role that strong entertainment and interactive content will play in engaging all consumers and helping merchants explore new and creative ways to market their brand and products.

The 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival was launched on 20 October and promises weeks of marketing promotions, entertainment and new product offerings from around the world, culminating in the world’s busiest and largest shopping day.

At the launch Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group said, “11.11 Shopping Festival has become the global retail benchmark over the past seven years, and we have raised the bar again this year to redefine the retail experience for consumers together with our merchants from around the world.

11.11 has evolved far beyond a 24-hour sales event. From today through November 11, consumers will discover, explore, play, watch, comment, share, recommend and shop across our entire ecosystem with our merchants both online and offline. Leveraging our robust infrastructure, global merchants have been empowered with unprecedented capability to seamlessly engage and serve customers through new technology and new environments.”

The 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival has four primary focuses which support the global growth strategy of Alibaba and the scale of the event:

Entertainment and interactive engagement
Entertainment and interactive content will play a significant role in engaging all consumers this year which will help merchants explore new and creative ways to market their brand and products.

+The activities included Tmall's eight-hour fashion show in Shanghai, the largest of its kind in China with 50 international brands and 160 models participating. The show was streamed live via the Tmall and Taobao mobile apps, during which viewers can preorder items in real-time as they appear on the catwalk.

“The Tmall Global Fashion Show is a key event that kicks off our 11.11 Global Shopping Festival and one that underscores Tmall’s tremendous growth in the past few years. For big-name fashion brands across the globe, Tmall has become not only a distribution channel, but also a branding powerhouse as well as a global gathering place for lifestyle and fashion trends. We expect the event today to become a lifestyle trendsetter for Chinese consumers and virtually a ‘fashion week at their fingertips,’” said Tung.

Launched in 2008, Tmall is China’s biggest online B2C platform for apparel and accessories, with 80% of market share according to the 2016 Global Trend and Lifestyle Spending Report by CBNData. With access to more than 400 million consumers across the Alibaba platforms and housing more than 50,000 apparel brands, Tmall is set to grow alongside China’s online apparel and accessories industry, which is expected to exceed RMB1 trillion in sales in 2017.

At the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, style guru Nick Wooster, the image consultant of this year’s show, led a procession of top models including Sui He and Maye Musk, celebrated photographer Tommy Ton and top performers such as Chris Lee on-stage in front of the live and online audience.

Top brands from Burberry to Trussardi, Paul Smith to La Perla showed their latest offerings for the season on the runway while global brands such as Maserati, Guerlain, Rimowa, Vidal Sassoon and New Balance introduced their newest creations using the Tmall platform. Burberry also released a mist of its Mr Burberry cologne to promote the scent's debut on Tmall.

Streaming live on Mobile Taobao, Tmall.com and Youku, the show combined entertainment with a demonstration of Alibaba’s latest technological capability, to help brands engage with consumers in a fun, entertaining and intimate fashion. The live and online audiences could preorder items that were in the show by viewing the products on the Tmall and Taobao apps and tapping the “buy now” button. Orders placed during the eight-hour show and successfully executed on November 11 during the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival will enjoy steep discounts.

+Till November 11, more than 600 international brands will be streaming live broadcasts on Tmall to educate and excite targeted consumers about their brand and 11.11 product offerings.

+Alibaba will pilot “Buy+”, the world’s first complete virtual reality (VR) shopping experience, during this year’s 11.11 festival. Shoppers will be virtually transported to select retail stores internationally, and experience the entire shopping process from product selection to payment, all through VR.

+The 11.11 Global Shopping Festival Gala on November 10 will feature a series of interactive activities between brands and consumers to drum up excitement towards the countdown of 11.11.

Online to offline (O2O) initiatives
This year’s 11.11 will showcase Alibaba’s ability to seamlessly integrate data obtained online with offline activities, including marketplace data, logistics, media, and entertainment. Alibaba believes that the future of commerce is not pure e-commerce, but an integrated, holistic online and offline experience. Below are a few examples of the power of O2O during 11.11:

+Alibaba will release a location-based augmented reality (AR) mobile game about two weeks before November 11. Consumers can follow the Tmall Cat mascot on an adventure across the Alibaba online and offline retail ecosystem to earn special promotions and prizes. Participating merchants include Suning, Intime shopping malls, Beijing Joy City shopping mall, Shenzhen Coastal City shopping mall, as well as global brands such as Shanghai Disneyland, KFC and Starbucks.

+Alibaba is working with more than 1 million offline stores across various product categories to present consumers with an integrated online-to-offline experience across products, members and services.

Personalisation through big data
Each user will have a unique and highly-personalised shopping experience for 11.11 this year. Driven by data, everything from product recommendations, search results, newsfeeds, to user-generated content etc., will be specifically tailored to the individual consumer.

+Consumers will enjoy highly relevant products and content that meets their interest and lifestyles.

+Brands and retailers will have the ability to customise their storefronts, product selection and marketing materials targeted at different demographics.

Buy globally, sell globally
Globalisation is a strategic long-term priority for Alibaba Group, with the 10-year goal of serving 2 billion consumers and supporting 10 million small businesses, brands and retailers globally. The 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival will take Alibaba another step forward in its globalisation strategy with its Buy Globally, Sell Globally initiative.

+Buy Globally: Alibaba is the premium gateway to China for international brands and merchants to sell quality international products and services to Chinese consumers.

+Sell Globally: Alibaba is introducing a new pilot programme to help global merchants sell beyond China. The company is in its early phases of expanding its infrastructure, including logistics and payments, in order to allow consumers overseas to purchase international products through Tmall. Hong Kong and Taiwan are the first markets outside mainland China where this will be available.

The 11.11 shopping festival began in 2009 with 27 merchants as an event for Tmall.com merchants and consumers to raise awareness of the value in online shopping. Seven years later, 11.11 has become a global event with participating merchants in the tens of thousands, buyers in the millions, and total sales in the billions.

Scammers set more lures after Kardashian news trends

News about a celebrity goes viral, and the scammers go to work. Earlier this week scammers capitalised on reports that US social media star Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in her private Paris residence.

Norton reported that within 24 hours after the incident was made public, there was a 2,400% increase in Kim Kardashian-related spam and scams. In order to make money, steal personal information or do damage, Norton notes that attackers use current events as a hook to play on people’s emotions and attract attention. As a result, nearly 100 different subject-line variations were seen in spam messages alone associated with Kardashian’s name, including “Breaking News” and “Photos of” in the subject line. The majority of messages Norton has tracked so far are in English, French and German.

Media reports commenting on the rubbery point to social media as a way for intruders to enter personal lives. Norton's tips for Snapchat and Instagram users include:

Geotagging
o By default, Snapchat provides no information about someone’s location. However, users can use geofilters which apply a special overlay to their snaps. This information is usually the name of the city, state or associated with a landmark or business, but it does not pinpoint the users’ approximate location.

o Instagram on the other hand allows users to geotag their photos or videos with a specific landmark/location. The only other way to identify someone’s location would be by identifying any landmarks in the images themselves. So remember, don’t geotag photos from personal locations (like your home, office, a friend or family members’ home)!

Privacy settings
o Ensure that you regularly review your privacy settings
o Remove geotags on previously posted photos from these personal locations by viewing your photomap (Instagram)
o If you’re a Snapchat user, be sure you know who can view your Snapchat stories and who can contact you

Social engineering scams come in many forms, Norton adds. Some files of thumb include:

- Don’t open e-mails or click on attachments from those you don’t know

- Be sceptical: just because you’ve seen it on your newsfeed doesn’t mean it’s not a scam. Your friends may have fallen victim to a click-jacking scam and may not not even be aware of it. They may have clicked on a link which then hijacks their address book and sends phishing requests to their friends without their knowledge.

- Hover over the URL before clicking to see what kind of site you’ll be redirected to – it is best to visit only websites you know and trust. Tools like Norton Safe Search can verify a website’s legitimacy

- Be suspicious of any calls to action such as filling a form (phishes personal details), downloading a plug-in (could be malware) or the need to share with friends before actually watching or reading the promised content

- Report suspicious activities or content to the social media platform or your e-mail service provider

Etihad releases VR film starring Nicole Kidman

Source: Etihad website. Kidman in the video.
Source: Etihad website. Kidman in the video.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, has released a 360o virtual reality (VR) film starring Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman. This marks the first time that a Hollywood actor has ever starred in a fully immersive virtual reality movie.

The five-minute feature, titled Reimagine, immerses viewers in an experiential journey following Kidman through one of its new Airbus A380s flying between New York and Abu Dhabi. The airline has used cutting-edge technology and multidisciplinary mediums in the feature to bring to life its acclaimed guest experience and hospitality story by engaging the consumer in various sensory interactions onboard the virtual flight. Each scene in the film takes on a theme intended to stimulate the senses of light, sound, motion, and conversation.

Kidman, who is also Etihad Airways’ brand ambassador, said: “The film is a culmination of Etihad’s vision to tell the airline’s story in an extremely innovative way and a commitment to engaging with the public as has never been attempted by an airline before. It was a great challenge but one which has definitely paid off and it was great to be part of such an exciting project.”

Throughout the experience, the viewer meets and engages with a number of characters including the actress herself, her film director, an opera singer and even an Emirati guest with a falcon in First Class. The journey also provides personal interactions with the Savoy-trained Butler in The Residence, the airline’s luxurious private three room cabin, the in-flight Chef in First Class, the Food and Beverage Manager in Business Class, and the Flying Nanny, trained by the Norland College in the UK.

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “We want to share Etihad’s story in a completely new way, using technology to make our consumers a part of the narrative and to experience an Etihad Airways A380 flight first-hand, from anywhere.

“The film demonstrates how, as an innovative brand, we continue to break down the barriers of convention and lead the way in intelligent communication and best practice not just within the aviation industry, but across the fields of marketing, communication and technology.”

The adventure takes the viewer through the twin-decked aircraft and covers its luxurious interiors including Economy Class, Business Class, and First Class, before concluding with a focus on Kidman enjoying The Residence.

Shane O’Hare, Etihad Airways’ Senior Vice President Marketing, said: “In December 2014 we completely reimagined the travel experience with the launch of our new A380 fleet, setting a new standard in innovative design, service and technology. This was followed in 2015 by a tremendously successful adverting campaign starring Nicole Kidman.

“This immersive VR film is a massive step-change in the way we present the Etihad Airways brand and product to the consumer using highly innovative new mediums. Based on the success of our recent campaign with Nicole, the decision to take this partnership to the next level was an obvious one.”

The film, which took more than six months to produce, was filmed exclusively in Abu Dhabi. An Etihad Airways A380 was used for three days and fully customised prior to filming; overhead lockers, seats and other sections of the aircraft’s interior were removed to allow for the installation of Red Dragon cameras, which were used to perfectly capture the actress’ movement through the aircraft. Hundreds of individual lights were required to ensure smooth and uninterrupted shots.

Etihad Airways collaborated with the Barbarian Group, a subsidiary of Cheil Worldwide, and the creative digital production company MediaMonks to produce the film. The feature was directed by husband-and-wife directing duo Anthony Atanasio and Valerie Martinez. The film used pioneering filming techniques to ensure a seamless production with no warping or stitches, achieving unrivalled VR results.

Ola Björling, MediaMonks’ Global Director of VR, said: “As the most multidisciplinary medium there is, virtual reality relies more heavily on craft and execution than anything that has gone before it. We believe the display of artistry in every facet of this production is setting a new benchmark for live-action VR.”

Watch Reimagine. An updated version in stereoscopic sound will be released on 17 June. To guarantee the full experience, download the Oculus VR app and view the film using a VR headset, such as Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard.

A taste of an Italian Christmas in Singapore at Casa Ferrero

Ferrero, producer of the world's most celebrated praline, Ferrero Rocher, has brought back the magic of an Italian Christmas to Singapore this year. The elegance is what stands out when you enter Casa Ferrero, Ferrero's only pop-up store in Southeast Asia. The gold of the classic Ferrero Rocher praline is replicated throughout the store, complemented by the glint of crystal chandeliers, the comforting fragrance of espresso, and, of course, the distinctive hint of roasted hazelnuts which permeates the place.

Casa Ferrero is larger than last year's pop-up, Pasticceria Ferrero, which was also situated outside the Wisma Atria mall along Orchard Road in Singapore. Designed to recreate the atmosphere of an Italian mansion, Casa Ferrero features a mouthwatering chocolate-making demonstration on the right and a photo-wall on the left.

The pre-packaged Golden Gallery is exclusively available at Casa Ferrero (S$23). The gift box features Ferrero Manderly, Ferrero Rondnoir, Ferrero Tenderly White, and the classic Ferrero Rocher.

Shelves of softly glowing confectionery dominate the middle part of the store, inviting visitors to pick out and personalise with pralines and special edition morsels of indulgence exclusively available in Singapore at Casa Ferrero till early January 2016. Visitors will also be able to savour their pralines with a cup of complimentary espresso in a setting reminiscent of sidewalk Italian cafes. Exclusive Ferrero Gift Cards are available to accompany any gifts they choose to purchase.

Leonardo Perrone de Almeida, Marketing Director, South East Asia, Ferrero Asia said, "When we introduced the Pasticerria Ferrero last year, we were heartened by the response we got from customers who came from around the region. This year, we want to give Singapore a piece of the Italian experience as they select the perfect gift for their loved ones. Casa Ferrero not only continues to offer exclusive pralines not available at other times, but will also immerse shoppers in the heritage, culture and craftsmanship that has made Ferrero Rocher the praline of choice all over the world."

Leonardo Perrone de Almeida, Marketing Director, South East Asia, Ferrero Asia (left) looks on as Qi and Peh take turns to speak during the launch of the photo-wall.

Celebrity couple Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu were once again present to join de Almeida in the ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked the official opening of Casa Ferrero for the Christmas season. Peh revealed that the event is particularly significant as she had been pregnant with the couple's Jubilee baby - born on National Day 2015 - at the opening of Pasticceria Ferrero the year before, but had not known of it then.

A special card was created for their three-month-old daughter, who is celebrating her first Christmas this year. Peh spoke of being extremely moved when she looks at her firstborn and said she hopes to keeps traditions alive with her. "I like to do things with my hands and I hope that my daughter will share this tradition," she said, speaking about baking as an example.

Qi added that the couple is honoured to be at Casa Ferrero. "It has been a very memorable year," he said in Mandarin. "The place has a romantic atmosphere and I'm very happy to be here."

Ferrero is also extending the opportunity for a unique Italian creation online. Singapore-based shoppers can visit www.Ferreroitaliancreation.com to capture their own unique Ferrero Gift Card. Completing the experience is yet another iconic example of fine Italian craftsmanship - the Fiat Alfa Romeo Giulietta - which awaits the most creative card uploaded with the hashtag #FerreroltalianCreation. The Italian-made car is Ferrero's way of thanking Singaporeans for their love for its brand.

To bring Singaporeans into the heart of the making of Ferrero Rocher, Ferrero Master Chocolatiers Maria Grazia Andaloro and Beatrice Boero Cuttica have flown in from Italy to lead live demonstrations of the process that has made Ferrero Rocher the region's favourite praline.

"Casa Ferrero is our way of showing gratitude and appreciation to the consumers for their love and affection towards Ferrero Rocher. As the number one chocolate brand in Singapore. Ferrero Rocher has been a part of many precious moments. we want to continue helping Singaporeans create even more cherished memories with their loved ones, while also sharing with them the Italian heritage and craftsmanship," said de Almeida.

Ferrero Rocher is made only with high quality ingredients, beginning with the handpicking of the finest of hazelnuts which form the heart of Ferrero Rocher. Each classic praline is handmade by Ferrero chefs who enclose whole hazelnuts in a wafer sphere and hazelnut cream, cover the spheres in an even layer of molten chocolate, and then toss the result in finely crushed roasted hazelnuts.

Cybercriminals love Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan

Hong Kong actor and martial arts expert Donnie Yen has been revealed as Intel Security’s most dangerous celebrity to search for online from Singapore. For the fifth year in a row in Singapore, Intel Security researched* celebrities to reveal which of them generates the most dangerous search results.

Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to take advantage of consumer interest around popular culture. They capitalise on this interest by enticing unsuspecting consumers to sites laden with malware, enabling them to steal passwords and personal information. For Singapore, the Intel Security Most Dangerous Celebrities study revealed that searches for certain martial art legends, established female actresses and musicians tend to expose Internet searchers to more viruses and malware.

“The pervasiveness of electronic goods and gadgets, as well as a desire for real time information, has resulted in consumers often clicking on sites that will quickly provide them with news and entertainment. Often, safety and security implications are not considered,” said David Freer, Vice President, Consumer APAC at Intel Security. “Cybercriminals leverage this need for immediacy by encouraging people to visit unsafe sites that can steal private data.”

People in Singapore looking to download free music or free movies may be especially at risk, the company notes. “Celebrity names combined with the terms ‘free MP4, ‘HD downloads,’ or ‘torrent’ are some of the most searched terms on the Web,” Freer warned. "When consumers search for music that is not made available through legitimate channels, they put both their digital lives and devices at risk.”

Kungfu heroes top the list: Yen and fellow action hero Jackie Chan claimed the top two spots in the top 10 list, a testament to the longevity of the popularity of martial arts as a form of entertainment in popular culture.

Multi-tasking entertainers generate more risk. Industry veteran Andy Lau (No. 7) is a singer-songwriter, actor, presenter, and film producer. Daniel Henney (No. 6) is a “mactor” (model and actor) while Angelababy (No. 8) is a singer, actress and model.

Female actresses in their 30s and 40s: Gong Li is at No. 5, Maggie Q at No. 9 and Jun Ji-Hyun rounding is No. 10.

Music acts are popular: Singer-songwriter Jay Chou hit No. 4 and K-pop group Girls Generation reached No. 3.

Intel Security advises users to:

Beware of clicking on third-party links. Access content directly from official websites of content providers.

Use web protection that will alert users of risky sites or links. Stick to official news sites for breaking news.

Download videos from well-known, legitimate sites. Most news clips can easily be found on official video sites and do not require any downloading.

Use caution when searching for “HD downloads.” This term is by far the highest virus-prone search term. Consumers searching for videos or files to download should be careful as not to unleash unsafe content such as malware onto their computers.

Always use password protection on mobile devices. If a phone is lost or stolen, those without passwords will yield the owner's personal information to anyone who uses the device.

Don’t 'log in' or provide other information. If you receive a message, text or email or visit a third-party website that asks for your information — including your credit card, email, home address, or Facebook login — to grant access to information, don’t do it. Such requests are a common tactic for phishing that could lead to identity theft.

Tools such as McAfee WebAdvisor software protect users from malicious websites and browser exploits. Download a complimentary version

Hashtag: #RiskyCeleb

*The study was conducted using McAfee WebAdvisor, using SiteAdvisor site ratings to determine the number of risky sites that would be generated in search results including a celebrity name and commonly searched terms (noted below) and calculates an overall risk percentage for that celebrity. McAfee SiteAdvisor technology helps protect users from malicious websites and browser exploits. SiteAdvisor technology tests and rates nearly every Internet website it finds, and uses red, yellow and green icons to indicate the website’s risk level. Ratings are created by using patented advanced technology to conduct automated website tests and works with Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

The terms “Donnie Yen” “Donnie Yen HD downloads,” “Donnie Yen free MP4,” and “Donnie Yen torrent” were used to search for Donnie Yen, and similar terms were used for each celebrity on the list. The results indicated the percentage of risk of running into online threats — if a user clicked all the results generated by the terms. Fans clicking on sites deemed risky and downloading files including photos and videos from those sites may also be prone to downloading viruses and malware.

Russel Wong shares tips on phonecam photography at OPPO workshop

Wong demonstrating how the O-Click remote control can be used to take pictures with OPPO N3 even though the phone may be quite far away. The O-Click's range is about 10m.

Celebrity photographer and photographer of celebrities Russel Wong no longer carries a compact camera with him when his phone can do the job. Wong explained that an OPPO N3 can can shoot pictures in the RAW format favoured by professional photographers, and comes with software with outstanding image editing features to boot.

The Expert Mode for the N3 allows camera parameters such as white balance, exposure and ISO mode to be adjusted, Wong explained at the It's Your Turn with Russel Wong! photography workshop for bloggers organised by OPPO in Singapore (It's Your Turn is one of the taglines for the OPPO N3). In fact, Wong said lightening the exposure slightly can make skin look more luminescent, with a little less detailing, which he said the ladies might prefer.

"I know the picture quality is pretty decent if I blow it up to 8x10," he added of the large image files the N3 can produce in Ultra HD mode. "If it is a huge file, you can shrink it. If you shoot on a small file, you will only get pixels (if you expand it)," he said.

The Colorful Night mode, on the other hand, can reduce graininess in night shots, he added. Wong was generous with advice during the workshop, giving tips such as:

Set things up before beginning.
All equipment has to be in place as subjects such as kids (or celebrities) can lose interest quite quickly during the session. "You've got to get it in the first five minutes," Wong said.

Always do variations.
Moving the phone to the left or to the right, or half-body versus full-body shots can give a completely different look and feel to the picture. "Shoot everything, then edit," he said.

Ask the subjects to move around.
This is as opposed to shooting where they happen to be, as "nothing is fixed". He also suggested asking subjects to tilt their faces slightly as slight changes in the angle can change the shape of the face significantly.

Only amateurs centre shots.
"It gives a different feel," Wong said of making subjects slightly off-centre, or even cropping them in half vertically. "Moving the phone slightly can change the shot."

Don't raise the phone too high.
When the camera takes pictures from a high angle, it causes foreshortening, as if the subject has very short legs. Wong says to hold the phone upright, perpendicular to the floor. He noted that as phone camera lenses are typically wider angle than those for cameras, slight tilts can also distort the picture. "Portrait shots should be at eye level," he said. "Zoom in a bit so that the distortion cuts out."

Create an imaginary border around pictures.
This technique gets around the problem of distortion right at the edge of the image. This problem exists with all camera lenses, Wong said. "You can always crop it," he said.

Try cropping foreheads.
"You can see more of the eyes. Look at cover shots," Wong said, sharing that he has done the same for his celebrity subjects. Wong's portraits on his website also show how cropping part of the forehead can change the emphasis of a shot.

Keep shooting, even when the subject is not posing.
Wong spoke of capturing actor Jackie Chan laughing at a joke, a picture which turned out to be one of the best of the session.

Print pictures in a lossless format like TIFF, not a lossy format like JPEG, so you have more information in the file.

Wong particularly likes the Bluetooth remote control accessory for the N3, the O-Click, which can remotely control the camera within 10m. He also demonstrated how the N3's camera can take panoramic pictures without moving the phone at all. According to OPPO, the 16 megapixel camera swivels in precise increments of 0.012° in either direction with its precision stepper motor to capture the fine details of the picture within a span of 206° in the 'slow rotating' mode.

The best pictures may however need added lighting. Wong said large light sources impart a soft light to subjects, whereas smaller light sources can be harsher.

Wong will be available at a similar workshop for the public on 6 June in the first of a series of events at the OPPO Concept store in Singapore. It’s your turn with Russel Wong! runs from 5pm to 9pm at the OPPO Concept Store, Suntec City Tower 3, #01-627.

Lucky members of the public at the store might also get a chance to have their portraits taken by Wong himself.

Personalised gifts are much more meaningful: Joanne Peh

Recently-wed celebrity couple Joanne Peh and Qi Yu Wu shared how chocolate had figured in their history together when they headlined the launch of Ferrero's first Southeast Asia boutique, Pasticceria Ferrero.

The Mediacorp stars were at the boutique outside Wisma Atria along Orchard Road in Singapore last evening.

"I used to eat it layer by layer as in the TV commercial," said the Singaporean actress of the classic Ferrero Rocher praline. She used to buy Ferrero Rocher at Chinese new year for the gold packaging, she shared. Gold coloured items symbolise prosperity during the Chinese new year period, while round items symbolise completeness.

Peh recounted a time before they were married, when they were both at work. She remembered that Qi had snacks in his bag and some had melted from the heat. He took out a whole chocolate out of his bag for himself, then offered her a melted one before asking if she would prefer the whole chocolate.

Qi shared that he had never given her chocolate as a formal gift. "Today might be the first time," he said, explaining that to him, giving chocolate to someone is not done lightly.

Peh added that personalised gifts can be very meaningful. "What do I want to convey with the choice of chocolates? Knowing your friend and the effort that you put into it - it's that which means so much more," she said.

Emirates' amazing video of football mega stars makes marketing gold

Emirates, the airline, has created a global campaign leveraging football on the back of the World Cup in Brazil this June. "Watch the moment when two football legends meet in the Emirates A380 Onboard Lounge," invites an eDM sent to its customers.

The campaign features a video of football stars Pelé and Cristiano Ronaldo, Emirates' new Global Ambassadors within an Emirates A380 plane, and asks email recipients to share and comment on social media with the #AllTimeGreats hashtag.

Businesses thinking of working with celebrities could borrow from the Emirates campaign. The campaign recipe is one which is likely to go viral. Emirates has managed to have two mega sports celebrities on its turf, playing out a story that weaves past and present realities, potential and luxury, opportunities found and lost, all at the same time. It'll be interesting to see what the #AllTimeGreats discussion is like.
