Thunderbolt turns 10

Source: Intel. Infographic reviewing Thunderbolt milestones.
2021 marks the Thunderbolt connector's 10th anniversary. In 2011, computer connections were more confusing. There were USB ports for data; Ethernet ports for connectivity; plus DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA ports for video.

Intel then created Thunderbolt to consolidate all input/output needs with one connector. At its launch, Thunderbolt could transfer a full-length, high-definition movie in less than 30 seconds and back up a full year of continuous MP3 music playback in just over 10 minutes.

Today, the technology is called Thunderbolt 4, with 4x as much overall bandwidth at the port compared to the original Thunderbolt. It can support two 4K displays, while charging a notebook at the same time. The connector form factor is now Type C to allow for thinner-and-lighter notebooks and single-cable docking.

Thunderbolt is now required on Intel Evo and vPro laptops, and will soon be supported on Chrome devices.

“Thunderbolt’s simplicity, reliability, and performance are important whether you are working or learning at home, or you are creating content or you are a gamer. You can do all of those things with a single Thunderbolt connection,” said Jason Ziller, GM, Client Connectivity Division at Intel.

Any product using the Thunderbolt name or logo has passed a certification test that includes electrical and functional testing. More than 1,000 computers and 1,000 accessories have been Thunderbolt-certified to date.

“Intel looks forward to continuing to work with the industry on innovation and adoption of Thunderbolt,” said Ziller.

“We expect Thunderbolt will keep up with monitors as we look to 8K and 16K, external SSDs that are nearly doubling in speed every year, and much more.”

SSD stands for solid state drive, a type of storage.

Are your passwords safe?

Intel Security has celebrated World Password Day with reminders of how best protect to individuals data by using multiple ways to authenticate themselves online:

Avoid easy-to-guess logins
While many users make their passwords short and clever for this reason, these types of logins are fairly easy to guess. Cybercriminals often reference the most common password combinations as their first login-guessing tool. Simple keyboard patterns like qwerty or 12345678 are as insecure as passwords like welcome or login.

Make strong, complex passwords
For starters, long ones are always better than short ones. Make sure to include numbers, lowercase and uppercase letters, as well as symbols. The more complex it is, the harder it will be for cybercriminals to crack the code.

Forget universal passwords
Don’t use the same password everywhere. If your data is leaked from one source, you don’t want to give away the master key to all of your online services.

Personal details are public
Important dates, facts, habits and preferences from your life can play a role when generating passwords. Cybercriminals often try variations based on personal details when they try to brute-force accounts. Place of birth? Favourite food? An important anniversary date? Easily found on the Internet.

Consider biometrics
Many phones today have thumbprint scanners (think Apple’s Touch ID). Voice recognition technologies are advancing, too. We’re rapidly entering an age where we can use our own bodies to verify our identities. While it’s certainly convenient, biometric security may not replace all of our passwords. But it will serve as another layer of security when authenticating into devices, confirming that we are who we say we are.

Regular maintenance
Check regularly on account security. If you hear of a data breach, take the time to make sure your information has not been compromised. Change passwords regularly, and not by making a small edit to the existing one.

Use a password manager
Look to a password management solution to generate secure, complex logins for your accounts and store them for you.

Use multifactor authentication
Anytime you can require multiple login-steps to access a device, take advantage of it. This makes a huge difference in terms of your account security. A complex password plus text message confirmation? A PIN plus a fingerprint? These are great security features, and are even stronger when paired.

Be on your guard
When data isn’t easy to obtain, cybercriminals have other methods to resort to. Techniques like social engineering — where cybercriminals disguise themselves as friends, family or figures of authority to trick a user into taking a certain action online — are powerful, and can easily dupe us into giving up personal, sensitive information.

Cybercriminals love Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan

Hong Kong actor and martial arts expert Donnie Yen has been revealed as Intel Security’s most dangerous celebrity to search for online from Singapore. For the fifth year in a row in Singapore, Intel Security researched* celebrities to reveal which of them generates the most dangerous search results.

Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to take advantage of consumer interest around popular culture. They capitalise on this interest by enticing unsuspecting consumers to sites laden with malware, enabling them to steal passwords and personal information. For Singapore, the Intel Security Most Dangerous Celebrities study revealed that searches for certain martial art legends, established female actresses and musicians tend to expose Internet searchers to more viruses and malware.

“The pervasiveness of electronic goods and gadgets, as well as a desire for real time information, has resulted in consumers often clicking on sites that will quickly provide them with news and entertainment. Often, safety and security implications are not considered,” said David Freer, Vice President, Consumer APAC at Intel Security. “Cybercriminals leverage this need for immediacy by encouraging people to visit unsafe sites that can steal private data.”

People in Singapore looking to download free music or free movies may be especially at risk, the company notes. “Celebrity names combined with the terms ‘free MP4, ‘HD downloads,’ or ‘torrent’ are some of the most searched terms on the Web,” Freer warned. "When consumers search for music that is not made available through legitimate channels, they put both their digital lives and devices at risk.”

Kungfu heroes top the list: Yen and fellow action hero Jackie Chan claimed the top two spots in the top 10 list, a testament to the longevity of the popularity of martial arts as a form of entertainment in popular culture.

Multi-tasking entertainers generate more risk. Industry veteran Andy Lau (No. 7) is a singer-songwriter, actor, presenter, and film producer. Daniel Henney (No. 6) is a “mactor” (model and actor) while Angelababy (No. 8) is a singer, actress and model.

Female actresses in their 30s and 40s: Gong Li is at No. 5, Maggie Q at No. 9 and Jun Ji-Hyun rounding is No. 10.

Music acts are popular: Singer-songwriter Jay Chou hit No. 4 and K-pop group Girls Generation reached No. 3.

Intel Security advises users to:

Beware of clicking on third-party links. Access content directly from official websites of content providers.

Use web protection that will alert users of risky sites or links. Stick to official news sites for breaking news.

Download videos from well-known, legitimate sites. Most news clips can easily be found on official video sites and do not require any downloading.

Use caution when searching for “HD downloads.” This term is by far the highest virus-prone search term. Consumers searching for videos or files to download should be careful as not to unleash unsafe content such as malware onto their computers.

Always use password protection on mobile devices. If a phone is lost or stolen, those without passwords will yield the owner's personal information to anyone who uses the device.

Don’t 'log in' or provide other information. If you receive a message, text or email or visit a third-party website that asks for your information — including your credit card, email, home address, or Facebook login — to grant access to information, don’t do it. Such requests are a common tactic for phishing that could lead to identity theft.

Tools such as McAfee WebAdvisor software protect users from malicious websites and browser exploits. Download a complimentary version

Hashtag: #RiskyCeleb

*The study was conducted using McAfee WebAdvisor, using SiteAdvisor site ratings to determine the number of risky sites that would be generated in search results including a celebrity name and commonly searched terms (noted below) and calculates an overall risk percentage for that celebrity. McAfee SiteAdvisor technology helps protect users from malicious websites and browser exploits. SiteAdvisor technology tests and rates nearly every Internet website it finds, and uses red, yellow and green icons to indicate the website’s risk level. Ratings are created by using patented advanced technology to conduct automated website tests and works with Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

The terms “Donnie Yen” “Donnie Yen HD downloads,” “Donnie Yen free MP4,” and “Donnie Yen torrent” were used to search for Donnie Yen, and similar terms were used for each celebrity on the list. The results indicated the percentage of risk of running into online threats — if a user clicked all the results generated by the terms. Fans clicking on sites deemed risky and downloading files including photos and videos from those sites may also be prone to downloading viruses and malware.

In 2015, we might use technology very differently

Source: Intel infographic. Learn more here.

Today's world has moved beyond one where we only used one device with a basic level of connectivity, and it's going to change further. According to Intel, we may live with multiple devices, from wearables to smartphones, tablets to PCs, but the future could be even more different.

"Consumers are demanding more performance from our devices than ever before. (In 2015), devices will cater to a greater demand for improved imaging and photography capabilities, longer battery life without compromising on performance, integrated experiences, and a greater level of responsiveness,” observes Hermann Eul, VP and GM, Mobile and Communications Group at Intel.

"When it comes to mobile devices, we’ll see an increasing number of devices interacting with one another in the ecosystem. From applications enabling smartphones to control the TV through to enhanced insight into healthcare - we’ll continue to get more and more out of our devices.”

Connected devices will be more useful and intuitive, Intel predicts. “People who are buying 2 in 1s are refreshing their computers a full year earlier than a traditional clamshell buyer. What’s more exciting, is about half of the 2 in 1 buyers strongly considered buying a tablet instead. The 2 in 1 gives users a great experience in tablet and PC modes which we expect will continue to resonate with consumers.” says Kirk Skaugen, Senior VP and GM of personal computing at Intel.

Eul highlighted wireless charging as a key part of the immersive lifestyle of tomorrow. “Integrated wireless charging is still in its early stages, and will be initially available in high-end platforms as a differentiator. Places like coffee shops will start offering wireless charging zones as an incentive for customers. It won’t be mainstream next year, but it’s a natural evolution – it will be one of those things where we wonder ‘what did we do before we had this?” he suggested.

Asia Pacific and Japan will be the world's biggest fans of this new era of computing, Intel says with brands from the Chinese Technology Ecosystem (CTE) and dedicated innovation centres driving change into 2015 and beyond. “The China Technology Ecosystem will continue to be instrumental in the transformation of computing, delivering to market innovative products and technologies that offer great user experiences without compromising quality for price.

"In the wearables space, the availability of low cost, good enough quality hardware, coupled with the debut of dedicated wearables operating systems (OSes), e.g. Apple Watch OS and Android Wear, will hasten the development of the wearables ecosystem as more and more app developers join the game," forecasts Weng Kuan Tan, VP and GM, Mobile and Communications Group China, and Director, Supply Operations at Intel.

Source: Intel infographic. Learn more here.

“Over the coming years we’ll see the rise of the smart city, with the management of people at its core. Enterprises will need to be mindful of competing interests and maintain the correct balance of profit versus what is right for the citizen. Smart cities will be about asking better questions of how things are currently done and optimising services that benefit everyone,” said Genevieve Bell, Vice President, Intel Labs; Intel Fellow and Director of User Experience Research.

The smarter devices being used in 2015 will also become easier to use, tailored to our individual needs, and we’ll see the emergence of new form factors, capabilities and experiences, such as wearables and 3D imaging, driving innovation and making the Era of Integration a desirable future for all involved.

“For wearables…there needs to be greater collaboration between technology companies and fashion companies. Something you wear is highly personal, it’s not just another computer. It needs to be inviting. We’re getting through the noise of the hype right now, and I think you’re going to see some great outputs in 2015,” says Michael Bell, VP and GM, New Devices Group at Intel.

“Touch isn’t necessarily the right interface for every wearable. We’re doing a lot of work around alternative ways to interact with wearables. A more intelligent voice control interface could be very interesting,” Genevieve Bell added.

"Device and transaction security will change the face of the Internet forever. Written passwords will eventually become a thing of the past, replaced with advanced biometrics, coupled with increasing government regulation.”

Consisting of billions of connected smart devices – from miniscule chips to mammoth machines – that use wireless technology to talk to each other, our connected world – otherwise known as the Internet of Things (IoT) – is growing fast. Recent findings from IDC predict that the worldwide IoT market will grow to US$7.1 trillion by 2020, up from US$1.9 trillion in 2013*.

IoT could potentially improve government efficiency, transform business and increase productivity, delivering huge value to communities across the globe, especially those prepared to shift quickly. For instance, the use of IoT platforms at an Intel factory in Malaysia delivered cost savings of US$9 million**.

“While it is early days for IoT in the region, every country is becoming increasingly connected, presenting new journeys for national productivity. We currently have a number of smart cities in pilot across Asia Pacific and Japan, and the trick for those implementing IoT will be to proactively manage and improve the quality of life across their markets,” said Prakash Mallya, MD, Intel South East Asia.

To ensure global communities successfully embrace this new era of computing, the benefits must be clear. "The challenge, as with all technology, is to explain it as clearly and simply as possible, while alleviating any concerns, such as privacy and security,” said Bell.

The ecosystem around the technology has to exist, too. The current and future workforce has to have the skills, knowledge and tools they need to succeed in this new era. According to the Talent Shortage Survey, skill shortages prevented 45% of employers in Asia Pacific filling vacancies in 2013***. If the region is to continue to be a hotbed of innovation, it is critical that gaps are rapidly addressed to provide opportunities for all.

“Education and broadband connectivity will be huge for developing countries in Asia Pacific and Japan in 2015. With more connected citizens and more devices per user, productivity in these regions will increase significantly. This is great news for the economies and emerging markets in the region, and it lays the foundations for IoT and embedded computing too,” says Prakash Mallya, MD, Intel South East Asia.

Shelly Esque, VP, Legal and Corporate Affairs; Director, Corporate Affairs Group; and Chairman of the Board, Intel Foundation, says that technology can bring education to more people. "We are committed to narrowing the gender and Internet gap around the world. The Intel ‘She Will Connect’ initiative is empowering women and girls by creating social and economic opportunities through technology access, digital literacy and entrepreneurship skills.

"As women access the Internet, they not only become consumers of content, they learn the skills to become creators. They can create content and gain the confidence and skills to be active participants in the economic and social fabric of their countries and creators of their futures. We will work to catalyse an ecosystem of partners to address this challenge,” she said.

Society, too, must evolve to address the changes taking place. A key driver in this will be government regulations, and changing end-user behaviour. “Governments must enable business to be an open playing field and allow SMEs to run their business in the best way they see fit. Small businesses will stand by the way they want their business to be run,” notes Richard Hsu, MD, Intel Capital China.

McAfee provides safety tips against holiday scams

McAfee, part of Intel Security, has released its annual 12 Scams of the Holidays list to explain how cybercriminals take advantage of the holiday mood to scam people during the festive season.

Source: McAfee.
Said David Freer, Vice President, Consumer, APAC, McAfee, part of Intel Security: “All it takes is awareness and some simple precautionary measures to keep.. digital lives safe and not spoil the year end spirit.”

This year’s top 12 Scams of the Holidays include several that could impact employees:

Scam no. 4, termed 'buyer beware', notes that point of sale malware could lead to exposed credit card information. The only way to tell is through credit card statements and sometimes, breaking news reports.

If sending corporate e-cards through a third party service, scam no. 6, 'getting carded', is relevant. McAfee notes that well-known e-card sites are safe, cautions that scams could still dupe users into downloading malware.

Scam no. 8, the 'bank robocall scam', could happen to corporate accounts as well as personal accounts. In this scam, phone calls purportedly from a financial institution inform the employee that a bank account has been compromised, and request information such as the account password to make changes.

The tenth scam is about Year in Review traps — the risks of clicking on these feature stories from work emails is that they could infect and compromise the security of company devices.
And lastly, scam no. 12, 'bad USB blues'. Companies which receive gift hampers from vendors may be saddled with infected USB drives.

McAfee has also shared these safety tips:

· Do your research to make sure the company you are working with is legitimate.
  • Do an online search of the company you’re buying items from to see if there’s any news about recent risks
  • Go to the company’s homepage to make sure it is a genuine business
  • Instead of clicking on a link in an email for a shopping deal, visit the site directly
· Bank carefully
  • If your bank calls requesting information, hang up and call them back through the official main phone number. It’s important to talk to your banker through the official number so you know it is legitimate
  • Inspect the ATM for loose wires or machine parts that may have been tampered with. This could indicate hackers trying to fix the machine for their benefit
· Stay informed
  • Follow breaking news stories for new security breaches to stay alert
  • Only shop at retailers you know have not been compromised
  • Check all credit card statements for any suspicious entries
· Educate employees
  • Ensure devices are secured with complex passcodes to allow access to smartphones, tablets or laptops
  • Share the most common scams that exist around the holidays with your employees so they know what to be on the lookout for and how to stay protected

Intel launches solid state drives for businesses

Source: Intel website.
Intel has a new addition to the Solid-State Drive (SSD) Professional family: the business-class Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series.

Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series offers peace of mind with advanced security features and capabilities designed for businesses ranging from small companies and upwards. Security and remote manageability features, combined with lower annual failure rates than hard disk drives (HDDs), help to reduce the need for resource-intensive deskside visits.

Managing data security is critical for businesses and a challenge for IT leaders. Data breaches, often a result of lost or stolen PCs, can cost a business nearly US$50,000 in lost productivity, replacement, data recovery and legal costs*.

To help businesses mitigate the threat of such costly breaches, the Intel Pro 2500 Series SSDs are self-encrypting drives (SED) utilising hardware-based 256-bit encryption to protect data without a loss of performance. Additionally, the new Intel drives feature the Trusted Computing Group's OPAL 2.0 standard and are Microsoft eDrive capable. These policy-based controls help to prevent data breaches and support crypto erase to repurpose the drive for reuse.

In an environment with Intel vPro Technology, with Intel Setup and Configuration Software and leading security software, the Pro 2500 Series drives can be managed remotely allowing IT to monitor and report drive health as well as track assets and remedy faults. This remote manageability enforces IT policies to help prevent mishaps and simultaneously provides a great user experience.

Embedded and Internet of Things applications can also take advantage of the remote manageability features to help limit the number of IT professionals needed to oversee devices. To assist in protecting user data and lower the total cost of ownership, applications such as ATMs and remote digital signage can be updated, monitored and managed remotely.

The Intel SSD Professional Family is part of the Intel Stable Image Platform Program, including a 15-month availability of the components and drivers for compatibility and stability across a qualified IT image. This helps minimise IT qualification and deployment times. The Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series also features five advance power modes helping to balance performance and power to enable a longer battery life and provide a better mobile experience.

The Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series will be available in both 2.5" and M.2** form factors and in capacities ranging from 120GB to 480GB. The Intel SSD Pro 2500 Series is backed by a five-year limited warranty and features a world-class annualised failure rate (AFR) well below 1%. The AFRs of other SSDs and HDDs can reach as high as 5% or more in mobile environments.

A 'Kill' Switch allows users to disable their phones even if they are lost or stolen. Content can also be deleted to prevent personal information from being compromised.

The McAfee Mobile Security lock screen blocks attempts to reset the phone, requires password authentication, and can be controlled by the user from the device or the a web console.

Smartphones have become a target for criminals because of their monetary value and the personal data that consumers store on them. The growing prevalence of malware is also a concern for mobile users. McAfee’s Consumer Mobile Security Report findings show that the quantity of Android malware rose 197% between December 2012 and December 2013.

“The implementation of the Kill Switch feature is just one of several specific measures we are taking to ensure that our users can easily and comprehensively protect themselves from the growing threat landscape, both physical and online,” said Dr. Ramchan Woo, Head, smartphone planning division of LG.

“Our collaboration with LG is intended to develop unique means of protecting users’ digital lives,” said David Freer, Vice President, Consumer – APAC at McAfee.

Through a multi-year global partnership, LG G3 is now equipped with a unique version of McAfee Mobile Security to protect users from security and privacy threats and identity theft. Antivirus, data backup, remote lock and wipe, and remote tracking are all available through the McAfee app for five years at no cost.

McAfee Mobile Security has been pre-installed and the Kill Switch feature has been automatically activated on LG G3 phones from May 28. McAfee Mobile Security is available for free on the Google Play Store.
