Reimagining Parkinson’s care

- Hayley Nea Iaduray has been named the Malaysia National Winner of the James Dyson Award 2026.

- Iaduray won for a wearable for Parkinson's patients.

- The invention will progress to the international stage of the James Dyson Award. The global winners, selected by Sir James Dyson will each receive RM162,999, while national winners are awarded RM27,160 each.

Hayley Nea Iaduray, a 24-year old engineering student from Monash University Malaysia, is the Malaysia National Winner of the James Dyson Award 2026 for her invention, ZeMor.

ZeMor is a tuneable, battery-free wearable device designed to help reduce hand tremors associated with Parkinson’s disease. Inspired by the engineering systems used to stabilise skyscrapers during earthquakes and typhoons, ZeMor applies the same principle on a miniature scale to help reduce involuntary hand tremors.

Parkinson's disease is one of the fastest-growing neurological disorders worldwide, affecting more than twice as many people today compared to 25 years ago¹,². Global researchers projected that the number of people living with Parkinson's could rise to 25.2 million by 2050, driven largely by ageing populations³.

The rich flavours of Penang return to Edge

Heritage of Penang has made a comeback at Pan Pacific Singapore’s award-winning buffet restaurant, Edge. Till 20 September 2026, Edge celebrates the flavours of Penang in an exclusive dinner buffet in collaboration with four Penang hawker legends:

- Chef Toon Chin Hye, Founder and Head Chef of Ah Soon Fried Oyster

- Chef Tan Pow Lai, Master Artisan and Wholesaler of Tan Kee Poh Piah

- Chef Tan Kim Chong, a respected figure on authentic Nyonya cuisine

- Chef Kong Chee Thiam, who specialises in traditional Southeast Asian street desserts

Working together with Executive Chef Andy Oh and his culinary team, these four legends will be preparing the signature dishes that have made them beloved names in Penang's vibrant food scene. With over 40 years of experience each, Chef Toon showcases his fried oyster omelette, which has earned him both local and international acclaim, while Chef Kim Chong brings the bold, aromatic flavours of Peranakan cuisine to the table with his Nyonya otah, Nyona curry kapitan, and Nyonya perut ikan.

Meanwhile, drawing on more than five decades of craftsmanship, Chef Pow Lai prepares fresh handmade popiah, distinguished by its delicately hand-rolled popiah skins. Rounding off this celebrated lineup is Chef Kong, whose signature apam balik, also known as min jiang kueh, has been drawing a loyal following at Northam Beach Café in Penang for over a decade.

Complementing these specialities are Chef Andy’s own culinary tributes to Penang’s rich hawker heritage. His signature Penang white curry noodle with pork blood curd features a rich coconut broth paired with house-made sambal from the region, along with prawn, cuttlefish, cockles, and taupok, for a deeply satisfying, flavourful bowl. Equally irresistible is his signature char kway teow, stirfried over intense heat to achieve wok hei.

Beyond these signature dishes, guests can enjoy a selection of Penang favourites that capture the island’s rich culinary heritage, such as Nyonya mango kerabu, loh bak (five-spice pork roll), char moi (wok-fried porridge with crispy pork belly), assam pedas fish with lady finger, too kar chor (braised pork trotter with black vinegar), inchi kabin (Nyonya-style deepfried chicken), and much more. The indulgence continues with Penang-inspired sweet treats, including muah chee, Penang tau sar piah, durian crepe, Penang cendol, and pickled nutmeg.

Alongside these Penang specialities, guests can also look forward to Edge’s extensive international buffet spread, featuring classic osso bucco, pan-seared sustainable salmon with fennel purée, seafood bouillabaisse, slow-roasted prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, chicken and mushroom roulade, marinated giant squid, and much more. For a sweet finale, enjoy the raspberry rose gâteau, cherry almond strudel, lemon pistachio cake, and Cream cheese pecan brownie.

Vitafoods Asia to be in Malaysia in 2027

Vitafoods Asia, a regional event for nutraceutical ingredients, finished products, and contract manufacturing services, has announced that its 2027 edition will take place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur from 21 to 23 September 2027. The 2026 edition was held in Thailand.

Source: Vitafoods Asia. The number of international exhibiting companies, country pavilions and trade visitors at Vitafoods Asia is growing.

The event will significantly expand its footprint, occupying 8 halls at MITEC over a gross exhibition space of 35,000 sq m.

"Kuala Lumpur represents the future of nutraceutical innovation in Southeast Asia," said Rose Chitanuwat, Regional Portfolio Director - ASEAN at Informa Markets.

"With Malaysia's market projected to reach nearly US$1 billion by 2030 and its position as a regional manufacturing hub, this move enables Vitafoods Asia to unlock unprecedented opportunities for our global community of ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, and brands. The combination of MITEC's world-class facilities, Malaysia's competitive advantages, and Kuala Lumpur's accessibility makes this the ideal location to drive the next phase of growth for our industry."

The decision move to Kuala Lumpur reflects the organiser's commitment to leveraging the growing opportunities that Malaysia has to offer. As an established meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination, Kuala Lumpur provides advantages for the international nutraceutical community, including ease of travel from across the region, an extensive range of hotel and entertainment options at competitive costs, and a uniquely Asian experience that combines modern infrastructure with rich cultural heritage.

Malaysia's nutraceutical and dietary supplements market also presents opportunities for international companies across the value chain. The market is projected to be worth US$1 to US$1.1 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 5.2%, driven by rising health consciousness and a shift towards preventive healthcare among consumers.

For ingredient suppliers, Malaysia offers unique opportunities through its diverse natural flora for raw materials, strong demand for high-quality imported ingredients, and a rapidly growing halal-certified ingredients market aligned with the country's Muslim population. The market shows particular strength in functional ingredients, with rising demand for immunity boosters, age-related health products, organic formulations, and plant-based supplements.

Finished product companies will find a receptive market characterised by health-conscious consumers, rapid e-commerce expansion, and demographic trends including an ageing population creating sustained demand for specialised health products, the show organiser said.

Malaysia's contract manufacturing sector additionally offers significant competitive advantages, including well-developed infrastructure with a skilled workforce, cost advantages compared to developed nations while maintaining high manufacturing standards, and established manufacturers offering comprehensive services. These facilities are equipped to meet international regulatory standards, including USFDA, TGA, MEDSAFE, and EU guidelines, providing full-service capabilities from product development through manufacturing and packaging.

Vitafoods Asia 2027 at MITEC coincides with Food & Hospitality Malaysia, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 21 to 24 September 2027.

Registration and further details for Vitafoods Asia 2027 will be announced in the coming months.

Malaysia Aviation Group accelerates growth with more choice for guests

Source: MAG. Malaysia Aviation Group announced new routes, more flights on routes and a new in-flight dining option.

With new routes, added frequencies, and in-flight dining innovations, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is building momentum towards becoming one of the world's top 10 global airlines by 2030.

Malaysia Airlines will start flying daily between Kuala Lumpur and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) from 9 January 2026, bringing the airline's network in Greater China to seven destinations. This expansion reinforces its presence in one of the region's fastest-growing markets for both business and leisure travel.

The airline currently operates flights to Beijing (PKX), Shanghai (PVG), Guangzhou (CAN), Xiamen (XMN), Hong Kong (HKG), and Taipei (TPE).

Meanwhile, Firefly will launch new services to Krabi (KBV), Siem Reap (SAI) and Cebu (CEB) from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) Terminal 1 from November 2025. These additions strengthen Firefly's role in enhancing regional connectivity.

Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group MD of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said: "With these new routes and expanded frequencies, MAG is strengthening its role as the gateway to Asia and beyond, making it easier for travellers to discover top destinations across the region and further afield. At the same time, we remain focused on delivering a premium in-flight experience that reflects our commitment to Malaysian hospitality.

"Innovations such as our new vegetarian satay is just one example of how we continue to innovate while staying true to our heritage, offering more variety to meet evolving customer expectations. With the networks we are expanding, the products we are enhancing, and the people driving these efforts, Malaysia Aviation Group is ready to meet the future with confidence and deliver value for our customers and our nation."

The vegetarian satay will be available on Malaysia Airlines. Made from lion's mane mushroom, the satay will be available for Business Suite and Business Class passengers on selected sectors. This plant-based alternative is infused with the airline's signature marinade and served with cucumber and raw onion, delivering the same rich flavour as traditional satay.

In addition to new routes, Malaysia Airlines and Firefly will also increase frequencies across their network beginning October 2025. Malaysia Airlines is adding more services to Australia, New Zealand, mainland China, India, the Maldives, and Bangladesh, while Firefly is boosting domestic and regional connectivity to Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Penang, and Johor Bahru.

These network expansions are underpinned by MAG's ongoing fleet modernisation strategy. The introduction of the A330neo on select Australia and New Zealand routes offers state-of-the-art comfort, improved fuel efficiency, and an elevated in-flight experience.

By Q126, Malaysia Airlines will operate the youngest widebody fleet into Australasia, a milestone that underscores both the group's sustainability agenda and its commitment to delivering service excellence with the signature warmth of Malaysian hospitality.

Singapore Polytechnic establishes the Enabling Platform Partnership

Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has introduced an Enabling Platform Partnership designed to empower Singapore-based enterprises as they embark on their transformation journey into the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The initiative, initiated and spearheaded by SP, addresses critical industry needs across business transformation, talent development, and technology adoption.

The announcement was one of the highlights of the Automation SolutionGO! and the Regional Industry Networking Conference (RINC) 2025, which was jointly organised by SP and AutomationSG at the end of July 2025. Formerly the Singapore Industrial Automation Association, AutomationSG is a professional association for companies and professionals in the automation, Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics sectors.

The Enabling Platform Partnership brings together institutes of higher learning, trade associations, and agencies from Singapore and Malaysia to close gaps in manpower, talent development, and technology adoption within the JS-SEZ by enhancing industry-ready skills training, upskilling, and reskilling programmes.

The stakeholders include Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic International, Southern University College, Sunway University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, AutomationSG, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing, Singapore Manufacturing Federation, Johor Skills Development Centre, and Johor Talent Development Council.

The benefits of this cross-border partnership are already evident in ongoing collaborations. A prime example is SP’s recent partnership with the Johor Skills Development Centre, which successfully leveraged a funding scheme from Malaysia's Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDF) to develop and deliver a two-day training programme across four runs.

This initiative equipped over 140 Malaysian employees of Tai Sin Electric, a Singapore enterprise, with essential knowledge in sustainability 101, aligning their skills with the company's Singapore-based workforce. This success now allows other Singaporean companies in Johor to access similar funding for their subsidiaries' upskilling and reskilling needs.

Soh Wai Wah, Principal and CEO of Singapore Polytechnic, said: “The Enabling Platform Partnership is a strategic catalyst for enterprise transformation, directly supporting Singapore’s goal of helping businesses expand into Johor and Batam. It solidifies Singapore Polytechnic’s position as a leading regional education and training institute with continual relevance to Singapore’s economic development.”

Principal & CEO, Singapore Polytechnic, Soh Wai Wah (4th from left) and Guest-of-Honour, Alvin Tan, Singapore Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade & Industry, and Ministry of National Development (6th from left) with industry partners commemorating the Enabling Platform Partnership.

The event also featured the GO! Awards as a key initiative by AutomationSG to recognise outstanding solution providers and end-users who excel in business growth, sustainability, and technology utilisation. There were two GO! Sustainability award winners, Ranpak which makes sustainable, paper-based protective packaging solutions, and LeanCost International, whose SmartCarbon AI-Expert System determines carbon footprints. The GO! Technology Utilisation award was given to Black Sesame Technologies Singapore, which offers the Sesame X full-stack AI computing platform for real-time AI inference in robotics.

Terence Teo, President of AutomationSG said: “Through strategic collaborations, real-world pain point discussions, and groundbreaking initiatives with Singapore Polytechnic and regional partners, we are creating an ecosystem where smart manufacturing, AI, and workforce transformation drive sustainable growth amidst turbulent times.”

Automation SolutionGO! and RINC 2025 also featured the first Manufacturing Jobs & Skills Fair, co-organised by SP, AutomationSG and e2i, to help job seekers and mid-career switchers.

Canopy Power has reported a number of achievements in the Asia Pacific region despite the economic slowdown in 2020.

A renewable energy microgrid for off-grid sustainable island resort Batu Batu was completed in Q320. Located on an island 16 km off the town of Mersing on the East coast of Malaysia, the 22-villa resort is now able to reduce carbon emissions and diesel dependency with the microgrid producing around 216 MWh of renewable electricity annually.

As the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner, Canopy Power is developing with Total Solar Distributed Generation a solar and battery energy storage microgrid on the island of Koh Rong Sanloem in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

The microgrid is designed to deliver electricity to the island – home to over 60 hotels, resorts and guest houses currently relying on diesel for electricity – with a renewable energy contribution of over 50%. Estimated to reduce islandwide diesel consumption by over 600,000 litres per year, the project will be one of Southeast Asia’s largest off-grid renewable energy microgrids. Work is ongoing, with completion expected to be in Q221.

Canopy Power has also developed a pipeline of non-hospitality projects this year. This includes food and beverage (F&B) customers in Cambodia and Indonesia, schools in Cambodia, a mine in Indonesia and commercial properties in the Philippines.

“In general, 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us. However, we are experiencing surge in awareness within individuals and corporations towards sustainability. This is a good sign for the next year and the years to come. Canopy Power is well set to help our customers and partners to make an impact in coming months. In 2021, our focus will be on expanding our geographical reach and providing novel technical and financial solutions to increase the uptake of renewable energy microgrids in Southeast Asia,” said Sujay Malve, founder and CEO of Canopy Power.

Labuan welcomes more financial services firms in 2020

Labuan International Business and Financial Centre (Labuan IBFC) continues to attract financial services firms from across the globe in 2020, with more than 50% increase in licensing application approvals for 1H20, making a total of more than 800 licensed entities currently operating in the midshore jurisdiction.

While an offshore jurisdiction typically offers preferential tax rates and other advantages to companies that an onshore jurisdiction might not, a midshore jurisdiction is positioned in between the ends of the spectrum. Labuan IBFC offers a balance between client confidentiality and compliance with international best standards and practices, with a business-friendly environment, simple and attractive tax system, and a robust, modern and internationally-recognised legal framework enforced by its regulator, Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA).

"Notwithstanding the challenges and movement restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we are glad to continue to have growth, an increase in licenses approved during the first half of 2020," said Datuk Danial Mah Abdullah, Director-General of Labuan FSA in his welcome speech at the third Asian Captive Conference (ACC).

"Having said that, we remain cautious on the outcome in the second half of the year but am optimistic that we will pull through this 'COVID-19 rollercoaster year' on a positive note," he added.

Other than the safety precautionary measures for COVID-19, Mah said Regulatory Reliefs were provided to help alleviate the operational difficulties of the market. "We will continue to support the market players during this difficult and challenging time as we navigate the new normal together. We are always engaging with our players on this," he said.

Mah said that Labuan IBFC as a midshore jurisdiction takes the approach of proportionality in regulation and market engagement, noting this philosophy is appropriate during these times of change and uncertainty, and will serve the jurisdiction well moving forward. He explained that Labuan IBFC is a "whitelisted" jurisdiction by the European Union and deemed largely compliant by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. With this, coupled with Labuan FSA's continued commitment to adhere to the highest regulatory and supervisory standards, Mah is confident that the global financial services industry will continue to regard Labuan IBFC positively today.

Meanwhile, Labuan IBFC Inc. CEO Farah Jaafar-Crossby said, "The growth in licensed entities definitely evidences Labuan IBFC's relevance as intermediaries continue to look for safe harbour jurisdictions, that are well regulated to international standards set by global multilateral organisations."

Specifically in reinsurance, Labuan IBFC continued to see growth in the insurance industry with 11 new licensed being approved of which seven were captive insurance entities, reinforcing its jurisdictional reign in the Asia captive market.

"Captive insurance is certainly growing in size as it now attributes 31.4% of total gross premiums underwritten in Labuan IBFC, amounting to US$267.9 million with 72.8% of the total captive premiums from international markets," Mah said.

"This is in line with the status of Labuan IBFC as a regional wholesale risk intermediating centre. In fact, for the first half of 2020, 64.5% of total gross written premiums of the reinsurance industry originated from international markets.

"We expect this percentage to increase as we develop Labuan even further as a centre of risk management and reinsurance through innovation. For instance, Labuan IBFC is the only jurisdiction in Asia that offers protected cell companies (PCC)."

He also added that it is a natural progression that as the Labuan community of financial institutions continue to grow, more intra Labuan IBFC trade will occur. ,"This is a natural progression of a jurisdiction with more than 800 licensees, with the insurance market representing nearly 30% or 220. As we mature as a financial centre, cross-pollination of businesses is part of a natural development cycle that reinforces a vibrant intra-Labuan business ecosystem for all institutions to partake in," Mah said.

Securities Commission Malaysia issues guidelines for businesses emerging from the COVID lockdown

Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) has issued guidance today for capital market participants (CMPs)* outlining health and safety measures to be taken in planning and managing their return to operations at full capacity. This follows the government’s announcement to restart the economy from 4 May 2020 onwards.

This guidance aims to guide CMPs in developing and communicating clear internal standard operating procedures (SOP) on health and safety measures, in addition to the SOPs and directives issued by Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN) and various ministries to minimise the risk of Covid-19 at their workplaces, with regards to their dealings with their employees, agents and external parties.

It covers the minimum requirements and additional measures covering three key areas, namely the workplace, business operations, and dealing with external parties, to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 at the workplace. In the event of any inconsistencies between the guidance and any SOPs or directives from applicable authorities, the SOPs and directives from the applicable authorities shall prevail. CMPs should also monitor the developments and guidance issued by World Health Organisation, MKN, the Ministry of Health, and other authorities, and where appropriate reflect these in their SOPs, SC said.

“As an essential service, the capital market has been operating throughout the Movement Control Order. However, CMPs must strengthen their safety and hygiene procedures to at least comply with the SOPs issued by various authorities to create a safe environment for their employees, agents, customers and other external parties,” said Datuk Syed Zaid Albar, SC Chairman.

CMPs should tailor their SOPs to their respective business operations and other relevant factors, and establish appropriate governance and monitoring processes, taking into consideration the complexity and size of their business operations, the number of branches and customers, governance structure and their workplace settings.

To ensure proper accountability, CMPs should designate a dedicated person or persons to collate, monitor and report compliance with the SOPs across their respective organisations, including for each branch location.

CMPs are also required to report to the SC on the status of the health measures and controls of their business operations, as and when requested. In addition, they are required to comply with other reporting requirements of the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities in relation to COVID-19.
