Digi's Chinese new year promotion focuses on family and tradition

Chinese new year is often the only time in a year when many Chinese see distant relatives, and Malaysian telco Digi is banking on that to run a new year promotion that could reach many eyeballs the world over.

Digi is running a promotion to bring back more precise family titles for Chinese families in an age where relatives outside the immediate family are simply called 'aunty', 'uncle' and 'cousin'. In Chinese, maternal and paternal relatives are differentiated by different titles. There are also different terms used if the person is younger or older than the individual or the individual's parents. Things become convoluted in large families where the youngest children in one generation may be younger than the oldest grandchildren two generations away.

"May you always find the right words to bring your family joy," says Digi to subscribers on its kakilang (own people) website. The company has a quick video as well as a cheat sheet for those who want to know that their paternal uncle who is younger than their father should be greeted as shushu(叔叔) while their maternal aunt who is older than their mother should really be greeted as yima (姨妈).

Digi partners Telenor to offer subscribers a free image storage service

Digi has introduced Capture, a free mobile app and service to back up images in the cloud that is offered by Telenor.

Capture allows users to save and back up photos and videos from their devices automatically to protect them in case they lose their phone, or need to transfer them when buying a new device. It also acts as additional storage, particularly for entry level devices with less space.

Non-Digi customers can download and use Capture with 2GB of storage space at no cost. Digi customers are offered 30GB of storage space and zero Internet charges for all uploads and downloads via the app. Digi Postpaid customers on SmartPlan 108 and above are entitled to 100GB of space. The service is available on iOS, Android and through  Web browsers.

“Capture allows Malaysians to take photos and videos without worrying about losing these memories and Digi customers can even do so without worrying about data charges. With today’s high definition photos and video recordings, our smartphones and tablets quickly run out of storage space. Having Capture means we no longer have to worry about that,” said Christian Thrane, Digi’s Chief Marketing Officer.

“At Digi, and Telenor Group, we want to empower people to do more through no  content creation and internet connectivity.”

Digi Telecommunications (Digi) announced today that it now serves more areas in the Klang Valley, more than doubling the company’s LTE footprint in this area. This benefits the telco’s customers in the Klang Valley with consistent LTE services.

Albern Murty, Digi’s Chief Executive Officer said Digi’s effort to bring LTE services to more Malaysians nationwide echoes the government’s ambition to ensure greater access to Internet services for all. Together with Digi’s existing 3G coverage, bringing expanded LTE services in the Klang Valley is aligned to the Economic Transformation Programme’s (ETP's) call for improving broadband access for 80% of the populated areas in Greater Kuala Lumpur, with a target of a minimum speed of
2Mbps.

“Our commitment to expand LTE coverage in the Klang Valley and across Malaysia reflects the company’s long term plans to continue investing heavily in its network to deliver Internet for all Malaysians,” said Murty.

Digi aims to maintain this LTE rollout momentum in the coming years, focusing on areas with a strong demand for LTE services and devices, and where it serves to make a real difference in bringing Internet to more people nationwide. Digi’s 4G LTE services are currently available in the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Labuan, Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Kampar, Langkawi and Port Dickson.

The company also has a deep focus on improving network quality. In the next few quarters, Digi will simultaneously increase network coverage, boost capacity and significantly improve both the indoor and outdoor Internet experience in the Klang Valley.

“Our focus is to continue to ensure everyone has access to quality Internet services nationwide, fuelled by significant improvements in our network performance and coverage, the proliferation of a wider range of affordable smartphones bundles including choices under RM200, and innovative digital service offerings to fit different customer usage patterns,” Murty said.

Digi will be hosting a four-day roadshow starting today at One Utama, where customers can sign-up for the new range of LTE postpaid DG Smart Plans, iDiGi Plans and Broadband plans. Customers have a choice of premium devices like the iPhone 6 to more affordable options such as the Lenovo A606, Meizu MX 4 and Honor 6, available for free with selected DG Smart Plans. Existing Digi prepaid and postpaid customers can begin enjoying 4G LTE on their LTE-enabled devices with a free LTE SIM upgrade redeemable at the roadshow itself.

Customers will also enjoy Digi’s special 20th Anniversary RM1 million prizes giveaway for new and existing Digi customers who sign up or purchase items at the roadshow. Additional 20th anniversary promotions for Digi postpaid customers include up to RM240 rebate for 12 months or select range of free smartphones for new DG SmartPlan sign-ups; up to RM60 rebate for DG Smart Family plan for 12 months, and friends who switch to Digi will get up to RM200 extra rebates. Digi Telecommunications recently held a training programme for the community members living around the Pusat Internet 1 Malaysia (Pi1M) centres managed by the company. This customised training programme is part of Digi’s ambition to inspire online entrepreneurship amongst its Pi1M community members. To date, Digi has 34 Pi1Ms in Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Melaka and Sarawak, and is committed to launch 70 more centres by end of this year.

According to Eugene Teh, Digi’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Digi has always wanted to empower societies and enable connected communities to bring about socioeconomic improvements. “Our priority has always been to ensure that Digi’s Pi1Ms are economically sustainable in the long run and to support the communities with easy access to connectivity as well as unlimited information and resources,” he said.

“This is just the first of many similar training programmes that are in the pipeline. It is our objective to ensure that all interested community members as well as our Pi1M managers get the opportunity to learn and benefit from the Internet. We firmly believe that these programmes will pave the way for them to enjoy equal opportunities for both social and economic empowerment."

The three-day pilot training programme saw the participation of 36 people from 11 Pi1Ms around Malaysia. The 36 participants were selected based on a profile evaluation and interviews as part of the process to understand their ambitions and keenness, and their business experience and potential. They were introduced to the power of the Internet and the exciting prospects of conducting business and earning income online by Digi and its strategic partners Google Business Group Malaysia, The Star, Pos Malaysia, MMSC Ventures and Zalora.

At the event, Google Malaysia and its premium partner Kasatria shared insights on Google Apps, while theStar introduced participants to iBilik, a homestay proposition; Pos Malaysia presented their online marketplace PostMe as well as their other service offerings, and Zalora shared its experience as an online business. MMSC Ventures also discussed online education and Internet-based income generation.

Mohd Hairulnizam Ismail, an F&B business owner from Lundu, Sarawak, said the workshop session had benefited him and his business in many ways. “As a consumer, I’ve experienced purchasing airplane tickets from Air Asia’s online portal, but I still needed the knowledge on how to bring my business onto the online platform. By attending this workshop, I’ve learned a lot on how to track my website’s popularity using Google tools. Besides that, I have also learned how to use domain tracking tools on my website through Google Webmaster,” he commented.

Maszni Abdul Aziz, owner of Sparkle Beads Enterprise in Melaka, said the workshop was an eye opener especially for people like her who are not fully exposed to the potential of the Internet.

“I have not been exposed very much to the internet, and I have never bought anything online before. My objective of coming to this workshop is to explore, and learn about what the internet has to offer," she shared. "After the session with Zalora, I’m very happy because I’ve learned a lot about the possibilities that the internet can offer for expanding my business. My dream is to bring my business up to a global scale, and with the Internet, I’m confident that I will be able to achieve that dream.”

Digi will work closely with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in coming up with similar workshops for its Pi1M communities with the aim of having them at least once a quarter. Each workshop session is designed to have a maximum of 35 participants including managers of the respective Pi1M centres to encourage interaction as well as to effectively address all topics.
