OCBC Bank, StarHub partner to support Singapore's collaborative economy
OCBC Bank and StarHub have announced Singapore’s first bank-telco strategic partnership to drive Singapore’s collaborative economy, also known as the ‘We Economy’. To mark the start of this partnership, the two companies launched the first store-in-store at OCBC Bank’s orchardgateway branch, which illustrates the benefits customers can expect out of the We Economy.
Combining OCBC Bank’s financial capabilities and StarHub’s catalogue of info-communications and entertainment services, customers can now seamlessly manage their banking and digital lifestyle needs in one store. This store-in-store concept will be expanded in stages to cover more retail outlets.
The partnership between OCBC Bank and StarHub is the first step in a multi-year plan towards bringing together essential businesses across industries. These include transport, retail, insurance, health and wellness, and real estate. The partnership will welcome companies that share the same ideology to be part of its We Economy ecosystem.
OCBC Bank and StarHub identified the potential of the We Economy from working on two key thrusts for many years – digital innovation and customer experience. OCBC Bank started the use of data analytics in 2002 to obtain deep consumer insights in its continuing drive to find new ways to better serve its customers. It was the first to roll out fingerprint biometrics (2015), voice biometrics (2015), speech recognition (2016), open APIs (application programming interfaces) in 2016, specialised AI chatbots (2017) and transactional APIs (2017).
StarHub, Singapore’s first fully-integrated info-communications and entertainment service provider, innovates continually to bring greater benefits to customers, from streaming Asia’s first ‘live’ virtual reality concert to enabling Singapore’s first autonomous hotel room service robot and comprehensive mobile device after-sales support. Earlier this year, it also launched a new facility called Hubtricity to help accelerate Smart Nation initiatives and to showcase its deep capabilities in connectivity, cyber security and data analytics.
Samuel Tsien, Group CEO of OCBC Bank said: “This partnership is born out of the strong belief by both of us that by innovating together, rather than each doing its own thing, we can serve our consumers more comprehensively, effectively and efficiently. StarHub and OCBC have been very active in the space of digital innovation. Our partnership is the beginning and a part of a multi-year plan towards building Singapore’s first We Economy.”
Tan Tong Hai, CEO, StarHub said: "In this new economy, effective collaboration can drive business success. We are happy to team up with OCBC Bank, leveraging our shared strengths in digital lifestyle solutions and omnichannel engagements to deliver enhanced customer experiences. Our form of collective intelligence becomes even more vital as it enables us and our partners to anticipate and better respond to customers’ evolving motivations and preferences.”

OCBC launches fingerprint-secured business banking mobile app
| Source; OCBC. A finger is all that is needed to check business account balances. |
View balances for business accounts, including current accounts and time deposits
Check the status of incoming and outgoing funds
View business debit card transactions.
Business customers have indicated that they would like to perform the above three tasks while on the move, the bank shared, as they want to be in control of their company’s operating cashflow; have the assurance that payments are being made, and funds received; and get quick access to related information. Enquiries relating to the three tasks accounted for more than 15% of calls made to the Bank’s call centre for businesses, the OCBC Business Banking Commercial Service Centre, in 2015.
The new app, featuring OCBC OneTouch which leverages Apple’s Touch ID technology, will allow Singapore-registered users of the Bank’s business Internet banking portal, Velocity@ocbc, to access their account balances and transactional activities using fingerprint recognition. OCBC estimates that over 120,000 customers will benefit from the app, which can be used anytime and anywhere, even overseas.
Said Gregory Trotter, Head of Cash Management, Global Transaction Banking, OCBC Bank: “With banking information at their fingertips, this new OCBC app will empower business owners to make decisions on the go.
"Our studies have shown a 30% increase in the number of calls from customers enquiring about their business account information in the last three years. The need to know their account balances and status of incoming and outgoing funds are clearly critical for business owners to effectively manage their day-to-day operations. Understanding this need, we developed this app to provide control, assurance and accessibility to our customers, which fits their business requirements as well.”
Velocity@ocbc customer Fanny See, Chief Marketing Officer and co-founder of Detrack Systems said: “I like the simplicity and convenience that the new OCBC app offers. I can now check my company’s balances and the status of our payments and receipts – especially business debit card transactions – when I’m on the go. All it takes is the touch of a button and I’m on top of my company’s cashflow.” Detrack Systems developed a mobile app-based tracking system for logistics companies.

The iOCBC TradeMobile app features stock charting, a customisable home page and a dual language function that enables users to view content in English or Chinese. It was designed to provide a more intuitive user experience, helping customers access market information and perform trades seamlessly.
The OneTouch fingerprint authentication feature has also been extended to more banking customers. It has been supported in the Android version of the OCBC Mobile Banking app since early April, making OCBC the first bank in Singapore to offer a banking app with a fingerprint authentication feature for smartphones running on the Android operating system. Customers who own selected Samsung phone models that are equipped with the recognition feature and run on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system or newer now
enjoy instant fingerprint access to their balances for all their banking accounts,
credit cards and investments, as well as credit card details such as rewards,
due dates and credit limits.
The innovations further underscore the OCBC Group’s commitment to
the digitalisation of financial services, to promote access and convenience for
customers as well as optimise the user experience. Raymond Chee, Managing Director of OCBC Securities, said, “With the
new iOCBC TradeMobile app, our customers now have detailed, real-time
information about the markets and about their portfolios at their fingertips,
which will undoubtedly help them make better investment decisions. In the
past three years alone, the number of trades per month that our customers
perform through our mobile app has almost doubled. This makes it all the
more important for us to keep driving digital innovations to enhance our
customers’ mobile experience.”
Since its launch a year ago, the OCBC Mobile Banking app for
iPhones has been accessed through the OneTouch feature about five million
times. Yvonne Cheong, OCBC Bank’s Head of Internet and Mobile Banking,
Singapore, said, “Our customers love the ease and speed of accessing their
banking accounts on the go, be it to check their incoming salary credits or to
track outgoing payments. Usage has grown rapidly by over five times since its
launch. We are excited to extend the OCBC OneTouch service to Android
phone users for the first time in Singapore, demonstrating our commitment to
using smart digital innovation to make banking simpler and more accessible
than ever for our customers.”

Singapore's largest cycling event, OCBC Cycle, returns for its second edition on 1 and 2 October this year. OCBC Cycle 2016 promises more exciting experiences, more interesting activities and more great deals for participants.
Targeting 8,000 cyclists, OCBC Cycle 2016 will see cyclists riding out from the iconic Singapore Sports Hub and onto a city route that boasts an outstanding view of the city skyline. Samuel Tsien, Group CEO of OCBC Bank, said: “Last year’s event was very successful, with strong support from the cycling community, the authorities, Friends of OCBC Cycle and – most importantly – from over 7,000 participants. That support has encouraged us to create the even more exciting OCBC Cycle 2016. There will be new highlights like a fitness boot camp, a strength-and-conditioning workshop and a family carnival specially organised by NUH Sports Centre.
"Our goal is to build OCBC Cycle into the gold standard for cycling events here. We will work hard to give participants many exciting experiences, many healthy activities and many great deals. So during the weekend of 1 and 2 October, do join us at the Singapore Sports Hub for the safe and enjoyable activities we have specifically arranged for all cyclists to enjoy with family and friends.”
There are 13 pre-event workshops and activities, including a Singapore Sports Institute Learn to Cook Healthily workshop on 14 May, and a Volvo Route Familiarisation Trip on 10 September.
From 14 May, for a donation of S$6 to charity, participants can sign up to learn how to prepare healthy meals in a cooking workshop at the Singapore Sports Institute, reach out to less privileged children by teaching them how to cycle, or join a café bike crawl in the North-East region of Singapore.
