Tiger Brokers arrives in Singapore

China-based international securities firm Tiger Brokers has further expanded in Asia on the heels of its growth in mainland China. The latest version of Tiger Trade, its one-stop trading platform for global asset allocation with a focus on US stocks, now supports Chinese-speaking retail investors in Singapore.

The Tiger Trade app provides data on individual stocks, technical indicators and global news, all in Chinese, enabling Chinese investors to trade stocks across capital markets worldwide. Offerings are low-commission and support cross-border investment.

Tiger Trade will also provide fast trade execution, competitive transaction fees, background information in Chinese as well as transaction services for US, Hong Kong and mainland China A-shares, with trades for stocks in all three of the markets handled through a single deposit in one account.

Tiger Brokers founder and CEO Wu Tianhua said that Singaporean investors can open an account online in three minutes. In addition to access to US stocks, Hong Kong stocks, and China A-shares, Tiger Brokers supports transactions involving securities margin trading in addition to 13,000 US stocks, share options and ETF products.

Wu explained: "Our goal is to make Tiger Trade the app of choice for any Chinese speaking investor with an international investment portfolio. Growth in securities trading apps is an inevitable trend, in tandem with the accelerating popularity of smartphones and driven by the demand by Asia-based investors for a more globally diversified allocation of their assets."

Over US$100 million in transactions were booked through Tiger Trade in the first month following the platform's launch. The dollar value of transactions handled through Tiger Trade jumped 22 times in the more than one year following the initial launch, topping US$2.2 billion a month.

According to Tiger Brokers, Singapore-based investors typically face substantial fees when trading US stocks through the existing choice of venues compared to a similarly-placed investor in the US. The minimum commission required per transaction is priced at several tens of dollars.

Tiger Brokers users enjoy commissions as low as US$0.01 per share with a minimum of US$2.99 per transaction when trading US stocks. As an illustration, if the investor completes one transaction per week, involving 300 shares, he or she will save US$30 per transaction on average or US$1,500 in one year.

Tiger Brokers' shareholders include Xiaomi Technology and Citic Securities.

OCBC Securities has launched the iOCBC TradeMobile app for iPhones. OCBC Securities customers with an online account are now able to view their stock portfolios, as well as market information on the stocks they hold, with the touch of a finger using Apple’s Touch ID technology. The OneTouch fingerprint authentication feature offers OCBC Bank and OCBC Securities customers greater convenience in accessing banking and brokerage information, without compromising the security of their accounts.

The iOCBC TradeMobile app features stock charting, a customisable home page and a dual language function that enables users to view content in English or Chinese. It was designed to provide a more intuitive user experience, helping customers access market information and perform trades seamlessly.

The OneTouch fingerprint authentication feature has also been extended to more banking customers. It has been supported in the Android version of the OCBC Mobile Banking app since early April, making OCBC the first bank in Singapore to offer a banking app with a fingerprint authentication feature for smartphones running on the Android operating system. Customers who own selected Samsung phone models that are equipped with the recognition feature and run on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system or newer now enjoy instant fingerprint access to their balances for all their banking accounts, credit cards and investments, as well as credit card details such as rewards, due dates and credit limits.

The innovations further underscore the OCBC Group’s commitment to the digitalisation of financial services, to promote access and convenience for customers as well as optimise the user experience. Raymond Chee, Managing Director of OCBC Securities, said, “With the new iOCBC TradeMobile app, our customers now have detailed, real-time information about the markets and about their portfolios at their fingertips, which will undoubtedly help them make better investment decisions. In the past three years alone, the number of trades per month that our customers perform through our mobile app has almost doubled. This makes it all the more important for us to keep driving digital innovations to enhance our customers’ mobile experience.”

Since its launch a year ago, the OCBC Mobile Banking app for iPhones has been accessed through the OneTouch feature about five million times. Yvonne Cheong, OCBC Bank’s Head of Internet and Mobile Banking, Singapore, said, “Our customers love the ease and speed of accessing their banking accounts on the go, be it to check their incoming salary credits or to track outgoing payments. Usage has grown rapidly by over five times since its launch. We are excited to extend the OCBC OneTouch service to Android phone users for the first time in Singapore, demonstrating our commitment to using smart digital innovation to make banking simpler and more accessible than ever for our customers.”

Crowdonomic becomes registered e-facility for equity crowdfunding in Malaysia

Source: Crowdonomic. Crowdonomic was one of just a few operators approved as a Registered Electronic Facility (Equity Crowdfunding Platform) by Malaysia's Securities Commission. From left: Nicola Castelnuovo, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Crowdonomic; Datuk Ranjit Ajit Singh, Chairman, Securities Commission Malaysia and Leo Shimada, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Crowdonomic.

Crowdonomic, one of the largest crowdfunding platforms in Southeast Asia, was today named by Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) as a registered electronic facility to pioneer and build the equity crowdfunding (ECF) platform in Malaysia. With its track record, regional presence, and experienced team, Crowdonomic is positioned to offer a strong combination of international market access, quality deal flow, and financial expertise.

Crowdonomic was one of only a few conventional operators to be approved as a Registered Electronic Facility (Equity Crowdfunding Platform) by SC Chairman Datuk Ranjit Ajit Singh on the first day of SC’s Synergy & Crowdfunding Forum (SCxSC) 2015.

“The registration is the high point of our continued constructive engagement with regulators to help shape competitive crowdfunding policies and build fully compliant and professional businesses in the markets we operate in. Our collaborative approach distinguishes us from many self-proclaimed crowdfunding platforms currently operating in grey areas,” said Leo Shimada, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Crowdonomic.

Together with the registration of electronic facilities, SC is introducing guidelines and rules to enhance investor protection, establish clear disclosure rules, and clarify fundraising rules for businesses seeking financing. The Malaysian regulations adopt an inclusive approach allowing any type of investor to participate in offers with investment caps set for protection purposes. The framework is unique as it will allow businesses to raise up to RM3 million within a 12-month span, and also allow investment funds to raise unlimited amounts off the platform.

Equity crowdfunding is widely seen as an enabler for startups to flourish and further develop their innovations. There is huge potential in Malaysia where there are more than 600,000 SMEs* - comprising more than 90% of total businesses in the country. Startups are also seen to lead the way in innovation, with research** indicating that many believe smaller businesses are the ones driving innovation in Malaysia.

Shimada also said the rise of equity crowdfunding signifies the birth of a new asset class. “Equity crowdfunding is revolutionary, as it allows businesses, for the first time, to leverage the full power of social media and technology to efficiently raise capital. This is particularly important as Malaysians are known*** to be among the most active on social media on a global scale. Startups will become more empowered to efficiently raise capital and investors can now transparently access new investment opportunities,” Shimada explained.

To maximise the impact of equity crowdfunding in Malaysia, Crowdonomic is at advanced stages of forming an alliance of top-tier players across the corporate, venture capital, financial institution and entrepreneurial ecosystem. This approach further differentiates Crowdonomic from other operators which lean towards operating as standalone websites.

“We are keen to explore opportunities with everyone interested in the potential of equity crowdfunding. We are in discussions with multiple parties in Malaysia and the region and we welcome opportunities to speak to more people. When it comes to equity crowdfunding, we are not content to just copy the Western model. Instead, we will be proactively paving the way to shape a unique Malaysian model. Most assuredly, we look forward to helping stimulate the economy in Malaysia as well as pioneer this space across Asia,” Shimada said.
