Avaya has upgraded its unified communications (UC) solution for small and midsize businesses. Avaya IP Office release 10 adds a number benefits for businesses in terms of security, resiliency and end-user experience.
With more than half a million systems shipped globally, Avaya IP Office
is one of the most widely sold unified communications solutions for
small and midsize businesses available in the market today. The Avaya IP Office Platform now offers built-in media encryption for endpoints and UC clients to preserve privacy and data integrity. This feature is provided at no extra cost or added complexity. Most other over-the-top, pure-cloud UC vendor offerings available today may provide encryption as an optional line item, if at all, Avaya said.
“The challenge of keeping up with growing, ever-changing cybersecurity
threats is daunting - especially for small and midsize businesses with
budget and resource constraints. It’s these very constraints that
increase the inclination to choose cloud-based services; however, it’s
also not a given fact that security is or will be provided by their
cloud vendor. That’s why we believe security should be built into the
solution as opposed to bolted on. It’s essential, and a core component
of our Avaya IP Office Platform,” said Tak Kuen Hubert Lee, Midmarket Sales Lead, APAC, Avaya.
“In
the small and midsize business sector in Asia Pacific, it’s all about
speed and streamlined deployment regardless of whether cloud,
on-premise, or a hybrid solution. Avaya’s IP Office promise of ease,
speed and built-in encryption hits the right sweet spot in this region.
In addition, the Avaya partner community in Asia Pacific - and
specifically at the country level - is an important differentiator for
providing the local customization needed and in addressing vertical
industry nuances,” added Adrian Ho, Principal Analyst, Enterprise, Ovum,
Asia Pacific.
With data becoming an important asset to businesses today and the nature of cyber attacks becoming more sophisticated, Asia Pacific businesses are setting their sights on security. Overall spending on critical infrastructure security in the region is expected to hit US$22 billion by 2020. On the back of this trend, Avaya’s increased focus in security is significant, especially to the midmarket: According to a 2015 global survey report by PwC, the number of attacks reported by midsize companies increased 64% between 2013 and 2014, from 2,581 to 4,227. This increase is partly due to cybercriminals turning to midsize businesses in hopes of easy access.
Beyond other pure cloud deployments, the latest version of IP Office takes a unique approach to resilience, providing system failover cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-premises, premises-to-cloud and premises-to-premises. Whatever the approach, the system stays active and users maintain connectivity throughout the outage.
To meet the rising expectations of end-users for a richer, more streamlined experience, the Avaya IP Office Platform also introduces the H175 video phone, with a 7” hi-definition touchscreen display that is suitable for personal use, an executive desk or a small conference room.
For midsize companies with contact centres, Avaya announced in June a new workforce optimisation solution that provides midsize companies with the operational intelligence needed to enhance contact centre performance and drive a high-quality customer experience. Avaya Workforce Optimization Select enables a wide range of insights into the customer experience.

| Source: Plantronics. The Plantronics Voyager 5200. |
The Voyager 5200 UC features WindSmart technology, a Plantronics innovation that incorporates six layers of technology to detect noise caused by wind and respond accordingly. WindSmart technology combats background noises such as weather, traffic and surrounding conversations so calls come through clearly. The headset also features up to seven hours of talk time on a single charge, HD Voice support over wideband networks, and a design that blends style with all-day comfort.
"Today's workforce is constantly on the move, which means unified communications is really happening from a variety of locations, not just from a desk in an office," said Rich Costello, Senior Research Analyst, IDC. "The Plantronics Voyager 5200 UC is ideal for this mobile user and delivers some terrific audio innovation, most particularly WindSmart technology, that ensures people can make calls from the noisiest environments and still sound professional and be productive even on the go."
Voyager 5200 UC includes the BT600 Class 1 USB Bluetooth adapter and a
portable charging case* with integrated docking stand which serves as both a protective and charging case that provides up to 14 hours of additional talk time on the go, and a grab-and-go dock for recharging the headset.
Features include:
* Four adaptive microphones and proprietary digital signal processing (DSP) work together to reduce
disruptive background noise.
* Multifunction button mutes calls and provides access to Siri and other smartphone virtual personal assistants handsfree when the headset is idle.
* Work across smartphones, laptops, tablets, and Bluetooth-enabled desk phones from up to 30m away.
* Smart sensor technology intuitively routes call audio to your phone or headset, pauses media or rejects an incoming call when removed, and automatically answers calls as you place the headset on your ear.
* Spill, splash, and sweat-proof P2i nano-coating.
* Mute assurance alerts users if they talk when muted, with visual mute indictors shown on both the BT600 USB Bluetooth adapter and desktop screen.
* Manage settings, wirelessly update firmware and activate Find
MyHeadset to locate a misplaced headset with the Plantronics Hub
smartphone app for iOS and Android.
* Use Plantronics Hub desktop software to enable softphone call control
across a wide range of UC applications, to view headset battery metre,
change languages, update firmware, or personalise settings and alerts.
With Plantronics Manager Pro, an additional service, IT can remotely

Ameyo launches cloud-based omnichannel contact centre offering
Ameyo, a provider of contact centre technology and services integrations, has launched Ameyo Emerge, a cloud offering that helps businesses to communicate seamlessly across channels.
The platform addresses the challenge emerging businesses and startups face in defining an optimised and efficient communication flow to streamline customer interactions.
With Ameyo Emerge, emerging businesses such as hyperlocal mobile app aggregators, marketplaces, and e-commerce sites can now create contact centres without investing in hardware or coding. Apart from voice capabilities, Ameyo Emerge also provides email support, in-app chats, social media, and SMS integration, in a single unified interface. A workflow engine allows businesses to create customer interaction workflows across voice, social, email, and mobile channels. Best practices are supported, such as 'provider push' which automatically pushes service providers to customers when a service level agreement is breached.
"In today's business realm, interaction platforms are falling short on multiple levels. They are typically limited to voice or non-voice capabilities, and analytics are limited solely to the web. The innovative features of Ameyo Emerge has given a new dimension to customer interaction management and contact centre technologies. The Emerge platform has been specifically designed for startups and emerging business models in order to help them in scaling up their core business rapidly with improved operational efficiency. This powerful and reliable combination will offer new levels of customer engagement in India, which was not possible until now," said Nayan Jain, CTO, Ameyo.

Plantronics releases Voyager Focus UC Bluetooth headset with active noise cancellation
![]() |
| Source: Plantronics. |
A premium product for unified communications (UC) and multimedia applications, Voyager Focus UC was designed for enterprise workers in an open office or simply to reduce distraction. The headset provides all-day comfort and includes smart sensor technology, audio alerts, and wideband audio and hi-fi stereo sound.
"No one can dispute the positive impact a great audio experience has on effective communications and collaboration," said Rich Costello, Senior Research Analyst, IDC. "But audio experiences are increasingly being challenged, especially as traditional office environments expand to include workers in more remote and non-traditional, open-office environments that introduce more external noise factors."
The Voyager Focus UC headsets feature an immersive on-the-ear design to reduce high frequency noises like office sounds and background voices. Low frequency sounds, like noise from air conditioners, is reduced through ANC. In order to reduce the noise that is transmitted and overheard by others, three precisely-tuned microphones and noise-cancelling algorithms reduce noise caused by keyboard clatter, close-talkers, and movement, while optimising voice intelligibility.
"We tried to think of every collaboration challenge and built a solution that solves for them. We created a premium design that will convey confidence and competence during a video call. We've used sensors and context to adapt the user experience to the wearing style and state so it just works as expected," said Bill Loewenthal, VP, enterprise solutions management, Plantronics.
"But our real innovation is in the audio performance. We adapted our best-of-breed microphone technology with improved algorithms to ensure clarity of the user's voice, while suppressing background noises and tuning the audio listening profile to ensure that your favorite playlist sounds dynamic and impressive."
Highlights include:
- Class 1 Bluetooth with adaptive power to deliver up to 45m of wireless range while preserving battery life.
- Dynamic Mute Alert technology - an industry first - senses speech and then alerts that the mute function is still active. Additionally, the headset will automatically mute when a user takes it off and unmute when it's put back on.
- Leatherette ear cushions wrapped around pillow-soft memory foam deliver all-day comfort, while a cushioned metal headband provides durability and helps maintain a comfortable, secure fit.
- On-board sensors create an intuitive user experience. Examples include answering a call by simply putting the headset on and pausing mobile audio when the headset is taken off, restarting it when replaced.
- Rigorous testing of the Voyager Focus UC with the predominant collaboration solutions from Microsoft, Cisco, Avaya, and Huawei ensures the best possible experience when using these applications.

Educate and incentivise employees to ensure UC success: Jabra
Jabra, a manufacturer of intelligent audio solutions, has called on the industry to take greater responsibility to redefine the global success of unified communications (UC) deployments.
| Source: Jabra website. |
Currently, UC adoption rates are at just 10% due to employee hesitancy to give up their current working patterns and tools. And whilst companies are spending thousands implementing new technologies, employees are still failing to understand how UC can benefit their productivity and efficiency levels on a daily basis.
Jabra believes that education and incentives are crucial but having a companywide adoption plan, with considered input and expertise from key functions of the business, will be the key to a successful implementation and ensure that organisations are seeing actual return on their investment quickly.
A new Jabra business brief published today on UC understanding and adoption says that UC vendors must work with their customers to help end-users understand and embrace the transition. Jabra believes that the key to driving up the successful adoption rates will be creating a planning and implementation team that involves company experts from multiple areas of the business including IT, marketing, corporate communications and human resources. By bringing representatives of these functional areas into the project from the beginning, soliciting their input and expertise throughout rollout and ensuring their support, businesses are more likely to see successful adoption, companywide.
Mark Leigh, President, Asia Pacific at Jabra, commented around the findings within this recent business brief: “It’s our job as IT professionals to redefine success as that time when UC technologies are actively enabling new and better ways of communication, collaboration, conversation and concentration - and not just whether the deployment was launched on time or within budget.”
He continued: “UC is a key enabler in connecting today’s modern knowledge economies. At the same time, these new tools require entirely new behaviours. And, as it has always been the case when introducing new technologies, we need to find ways to ensure that end-users adopt these new tools on their own terms. No matter how beneficial your new technology may be, not everyone will share your passion for it. To generate acceptance you need demonstrate how it benefits people personally and gently steer them toward embracing it.”
In the present-day world of technology, UC deployment plans and associated tactics are starting to focus on changing end-user behaviours by incorporating new theories and methods from the world of behavioural economics to similarly overcome employee resistance to change. This usually involves using indirect suggestions and positive reinforcement to influence choices, instead of the traditional model of mandating behavior.
Jabra is working with its customers to provide real-life examples of some of these new methods, including creating competitions between workers to use UC; building online communities to share experiences, ask questions and get advice; and recognising and rewarding workers or departments for embracing new UC technologies.

Plantronics launches new audio devices for communications, collaboration
Plantronics has announced new unified communications (UC) audio devices designed to deliver audio quality and noise management technology to help people effectively communicate and collaborate, regardless of workplace or location.
"Everywhere is the new workplace. We know office noise is increasingly becoming a concern due to more open working environments that promote collaboration, but workplace noise isn't just a problem for those in the office," said Bill Loewenthal, VP, enterprise product solutions, Plantronics.
"You can't always control your environment and you certainly can't control your caller's environment, so we help ensure workers have solutions they need to block out the noise, allowing them to have a high-quality communication experience wherever their workplace is."
"There's been increasing emphasis on the importance of a reliable, high-quality, seamless user experience when communicating and collaborating today, and rightly so," said Rich Costello, Senior Research Analyst, unified communications, IDC. "The new Plantronics offerings not only address these important requirements, but also the surrounding noise factor on both sides of the call."
The shift to open office environments and hot desks creates new noise challenges for individuals and their colleagues which can often undermine productivity gains.
The following solutions address the inherent ambient noise challenges and potential audio quality concerns associated with today's smarter working scenarios and environments:
The Blackwire 725 is the company's first UC stereo headset with active noise cancelling. It combines wideband audio, digital signal processing and a noise cancelling microphone in a corded option that is ideal for managing PC calls and listening to multimedia.
The Voyager Edge UC is a new addition to the Voyager family of Bluetooth headsets and comes with its own portable charging case. It boasts signature Plantronics audio technology that eliminates background noise and automatically answers calls once it is placed on the ear. The solution includes a small Bluetooth USB dongle that provides seamless wideband audio to a laptop.
The Calisto 610 is a corded portable speakerphone for instant anywhere conferencing. The USB speakerphone allows users to create on-the-go conference calls for small groups of people. It enables workers to hear remote participants with high-quality, omni-directional audio, in an easy-to-carry form factor that integrates easily with a softphone of their choice, all at the price of a basic speakerphone. A carrying case is included.
The Clarity 340 is designed for those who face vision, hearing, or dexterity challenges. The handset-style phone features amplified sound, an easy-to-read screen, large buttons for dialing, and crisp audio.
All four products are available in March from authorised Plantronics distributors. Manufacturer's suggested retail prices are US$179.95 for the Blackwire 725; US$199.95 for the Voyager Edge UC; US$99.95 for the Calisto 610, and for the Clarity 340, US$149.95.

Have laptop, Internet and headset, will travel
Jabra, a company which provides headsets, headphones, speakers and speakerphones, notes that employees working anywhere and anytime will be the norm in 2015.
According to Mark Leigh, President, Asia Pacific, Jabra, 35% of the workers today are mobile and this percentage is expected to shoot up to 75% by 2017. "The traditional office has been replaced with a laptop, Internet connection and headset, enabling the employee to work wherever they can get online," he said.
This technology has enabled employees to work easily whether they are on business travel or even make a lifestyle choice to be based in a different geographical location. "Employers have to provide a more flexible work environment for employees so they can be productive no matter what zone they’re in," Leigh said.
Even if the employee does not travel and goes to the office every day, globalisation has meant that workers may have conference calls at any time of the day, including taking calls from home. "By ensuring that the last 3 feet of communication is of top quality, knowledge workers can be assured that they can take their office anywhere they go," he added.

Built on Tata Communications’ global tier 1 network, jamvee brings together any client software and device on a single platform - providing an agnostic, secure, unified communications service. This enables easier intra and inter-company collaboration as employees, suppliers and customers can now get together via any combination of audio, video or messaging and share content in groups - across any device or through a browser.
Jamvee supports instant messaging and presence federation via SIP and XMPP that is fully compatible with the leading enterprise clients. With a subscription to jamvee, organisations gain access to a federated jamvee meeting room for internal and external business-to-business meetings. This greatly expands collaboration opportunities, while simplifying administration and security. As it is delivered and hosted by Tata Communications, it provides the security, quality and reach that only a global tier 1 network can offer.
In addition to traditional video conferencing or telepresence, participants joining virtual jamvee meetings from their enterprise clients can leverage jamvee’s full audio, video, chat and content sharing capabilities. Jamvee also supports participants joining a conference through their browsers with a quick plug-in solution for non WebRTC-native browsers, and there are apps available for Android and iOS.
