The Chinnery refreshed at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

The Chinnery, an iconic establishment within the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, has reopened after an interior refresh.

Initially designed as a private gentlemen’s club, The Chinnery has been much-loved since 1963. It continues to offer an intimate retreat for those seeking tranquillity in the city, exuding quintessential British colonial style with rich mahogany timber panelling, plush carpets, and luxurious leather furnishings. blending historical charm with timeless sophistication. 

The bar is named after the 19th-century British artist George Chinnery, who dedicated much of his career to capturing British colonial scenes from his life in India, Macau, and Hong Kong. His self-portrait, prominently displayed at the entrance, along with his other works throughout the bar, provides a rich historical backdrop to this iconic establishment.

To celebrate its reopening, a Taste of The Chinnery menu will be available till 30 August 2024. Priced at HK$1,963 for two (a tribute to the year the hotel opened), the menu blends beloved classics with exciting new creations. There are snacks like lamb samosa with fresh mint yoghurt and the new keema kulcha or potato kulcha served with cucumber yoghurt.

Guests can enjoy the prime tenderloin tartare, prepared with a secret homemade sauce, cage-free egg, capers, gherkin, parsley, and served with white toast; or they can opt for the new broccoli velouté, a seasonal delight enriched with crème fraîche and coriander. The main courses include the classic shepherd’s pie made with organic lamb shoulder, carrot, celery, onion, and a rich tomato sauce, Indian tikka chicken cooked with fresh tomatoes, butter, yoghurt, aromatic spices, and basmati rice, and the new Bengali mixed fish curry featuring fresh tomato, onion, ground mustard seeds, and fresh ginger.

Accompanying these dishes are sides of creamed potato, sautéed French Beans, and a selection of naan breads (garlic, Butter, or Plain). Conclude the experience with chocolate lava cake or phirni, a traditional Indian dessert - both are served with ice cream.

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong will also be renovating the Clipper Lounge and Café Causette over the summer.

Details

The Chinnery is open for lunch from Monday to Friday, 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, and for drinks from Monday to Saturday, 5 pm to 11 pm. Dinner is served from Monday to Saturday, 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

Octapas launches new menu on 18 April

OCTAPAS, a Spanish tapas bar at Clarke Quay, Singapore, is launching a new menu on 18 April that features improved classic recipes, a sizeable number of vegetarian dishes and gluten free selections.

‘We are pleased to announce that Antidote will be coming on board in April to spice up the restaurant. Antidote is a great top 40’s band that has played all over Southeast Asia and greater part of Philippines, so we’re very fortunate to have them. We wanted to find a band that will meet the eclectic style of the restaurant so perfectly and that’s Antidote," said the General Manager, Rahidi Hamzah.

Experience Glam at the Bund

‘M’ Restaurant Group has launched Glam, a sophisticated new Shanghai dining lounge & bar at 5 on the Bund - the same address that has been home to Shanghai institution and Bund pioneer, M on the Bund restaurant.

‘M’, spearheaded by Shanghai’s legendary entrepreneur Michelle Garnaut, is famed for setting new standards of dining in Asia. Her restaurant collection began with the opening of M at the Fringe in Hong Kong (1989), from which she went on to pioneer the revival of sophistication in Shanghai with M on the Bund (1999), and then further enhanced Shanghai’s nightlife with The Glamour Bar (2006). From here, she brought fine dining to the heart of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square with Capital M in 2009.

“There’s something for everyone…over 18 years of age. It’s a fun place for grownups!” says Michelle Garnaut.

The menu, created under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Hamish Pollitt offers a delicious array of modern food designed for sharing, at prices that will have guests coming back often. With each menu, he respects the seasons, highlights local ingredients and introduces something new every month.

Depending on the size of their appetites, guests are advised to choose one or two items from each of the sections, where favourites include the Veggie Pakoras and Sweet Eggplant Pickle (RMB36), Smoking Salmon and Salmon Caviar (RMB48), Chili Salt-Crusted Bean Curd & Black Beans (RMB38), Thai Tah Tah (RMB68), 18-hour Lamb Shoulder Rogan Josh (RMB128), and Ginger-Glazed Duck Dome Pie (RMB108).

The playful ‘Folly Trolley’ is stacked with a revolving selection of desserts including sweet Verrines (RMB42) served in M’s beautiful colourful cut glasses, Alfonso’s Exploding Mango Pannacotta, Carmen Miranda’s tres fash Iles Flotante, Josephine Baker’s Chocolat Mousse, and Pavlov’s Dog … in a glass.

Guests enter the sensuous space through a glittering crystal waterfall, revealing low tables and dark jewel tone interiors inspired by the feathery tail of a peacock. Designers Duncan Miller Ullmann (DMU) have created a warm and alluring interior. A comfortable mix of bespoke furniture and dark mirrored ceilings emphasise a series of works exclusively designed for Glam by famed cinematographer / artist / writer Christopher Doyle.

NEXT Hotel Brisbane officially opened ahead of G20 Summit

SilverNeedle Hospitality has officially declared its flagship NEXT Hotel open in Brisbane, together with the Lennons Restaurant & Bar, a modern restaurant and bar featuring Queensland’s best artisanal produce.

Lennons was the name of the hotel in the NEXT Hotel building prior to SilverNeedle Hospitality carrying out its rebranding and redevelopment as the NEXT Hotel Brisbane.
