Amazon launches Seller University in Singapore

Amazon has launched Seller University, an online education portal, for small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Singapore at its first Amazon Singapore Online Seller Summit 2020. With interactive e-learning content, sellers on Amazon.sg can access live practice opportunities and personalised support to better operate on Amazon’s store.

“Sellers’ success is our success. We are heartened to see the overwhelming participation from local businesses at our first ever Seller Summit in Singapore. This is an encouraging milestone and we are committed to supporting local businesses for the long term, with new programmes such as Seller University to help in their digital transformation journey,” said Bernard Tay, Country Leader, Amazon.sg Seller Services and Head of Amazon Global Selling Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Amazon’s Seller University offers sellers a series of rich educational content such as complimentary training videos and online tools to educate businesses on how to sell on Amazon.sg. Sellers will be able to learn how to create effective product listings faster, master the key tools and applications for selling online, benefit from Amazon’s tools such as Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), advertising, promotions, and more. The Seller Central feature is also part of this offering and will provide sellers with personalised recommendations on programmes and features to accelerate their growth.

Amazon has launched a number of resources to help sellers since the launch of Amazon.sg in October 2019. There are promotional campaigns, data analysis of sales, and access to training workshops and 200 innovative tools to help retailers manage their businesses effectively on Amazon.

For instance, the Amazon Seller App allows sellers with accounts on Amazon.sg to track sales and manage their business via mobile. To empower sellers to build and nurture their businesses online, Amazon also rolled out Marketplace Appstore, a one-stop shop to discover third-party applications and services for automating tedious business aspects, and the Seller Forum, a resource for firsthand advice from fellow business owners on selling with Amazon.

To date, Amazon has attracted hundreds of new retailers to sell online on its marketplace. A one-time grant from Enterprise Singapore of up to S$9,000 per retailer can be used to subsidise content development, product listing, channel management, fulfilment, advertising and promotion, trainings and workshops for local retailers to enhance their e-commerce capabilities and reach more customers.

Amazon has also teamed up with OCBC to offer the first 200 OCBC small and medium sized business (SMB) customers that are eligible S$1,500 in Amazon Web Services (AWS) credit.

Melvyn Low, Head of Global Transaction Banking, OCBC Bank, said: “It is critical for businesses to adapt, pivot and transform, and digital will play a big role in this. Dermatologists develop unique hand sanitiser

● Formulated by dermatologists who understand skin care and patient needs.

● Immediately kills 99.99% of most household germs and viruses - including SARS-COV-2.

● Maintains effectiveness for 24 hours even with hand washing, reducing need for re-application.

DS Skin Clinic and its international group of clinics has launched the DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer - a skin sanitiser that was developed to work much better than existing sanitisers in the market.

The DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer comes in handy spray bottles.
The DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer
comes in handy spray bottles.
DS Skin Clinic says that an effective hand sanitiser is a key component of a multipronged protection regime, which includes social distancing, thorough hand-washing, frequent hand-sanitising, wearing of masks and avoiding touching of the face with hands. As hand-washing facilities are not always available, a hand sanitiser that can effectively disinfect hands on a daily basis will keep them free of the SARS-COV-2 virus.

“As a dermatologist, I see the need for a good hand sanitiser for our patients that’s effective, long-lasting and gentle on the skin. We tried to look for such a sanitiser in the market and, to our surprise, couldn’t find one that satisfied all these requirements,” said Dr Henry Loh - Chairman & Executive Director, RMH Holdings.

"These considerations prompted DS Skin Clinic to come up with our own unique formulation, that we believe will meet the needs of consumers who are emerging from lockdown isolation and getting onto public-transit systems, returning to the office, and visiting more places. This means we will be increasingly exposed to the SARS-COV-2 virus on lift buttons, railings, door handles etc. that may have been contaminated by an infected person who had previously touched these surfaces."

“A good sanitiser must be effective in killing germs, as well as be gentle on the skin. That’s why we emphasised from day one of its development that the hand sanitiser must protect the skin from dehydration, skin irritation and prolonged usage,” noted Dr Coni Liu - Consultant Dermatologist, DS Skin Clinic.

Dr Liu shared during the launch of the sanitiser that her normal advice to her patients had been that there is "no need to for repeated cleaning" as washing too frequently can injure the skin barrier. With COVID-19 on the loose, her advice has now changed "as the risk of COVID outweighs skin integrity".

"Hand hygiene is more important than ever," she said.

The need to sanitise has led to her seeing more patients with rashes, especially on the hands, and flare-ups for those with stable eczema in April compared to March. She is seeing more atopic dermatitis (rough, itchy patches on the skin), as well as deep-seated itchy blisters, and allergies to essential oils. Some patients have even developed eczema late in life, she said.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but washing hands with soap and water can be more irritating to the skin than using an alcohol-based sanitiser, she said. She advised that soap should be used after using the washroom and before and after eating, whereas sanitiser is better after touching surfaces such as lift buttons or door handles.

The new sanitiser can be safely used by eczema patients, she added. A handful of her patients have already tried the new sanitiser and have had no problems so far, she said. Experiments with larger cohorts are planned for the future.

In its search for a good hand sanitiser, DS Skin Clinic found that commercial hand sanitisers have disadvantages. The alcohol-based ones, if concentrated enough, act quickly and are effective in killing germs - but can dehydrate the skin. The alcohol-free sanitisers, on the other hand, are more gentle on the skin, but also tend to be less effective and slow to act - as long as half an hour to an hour, according to Dr Richard Seow (PhD), CEO, RMH Holdings and Chief Scientific Officer, DS Skin Clinic. Such sanitisers are more suitable for object surfaces.

Regardless of whether a sanitiser is alcohol-based or non-alcohol-based, the germ-killing effect is typically only present during the point of application. Thereafter, the skin begins accumulating harmful germs again as it comes into contact with contaminated surfaces, until the sanitiser is re-applied. Alcohol is also soluble and washes off easily, DS Skin Clinic pointed out.

The DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer is fast-acting and kills the SARS-COV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. In addition, it is long-lasting, remaining effective for 24 hours after application, whilst being gentle on the skin. The innovative sanitiser is the result of a collaboration between the dermatologists of DS Skin Clinic, sharing their skincare expertise, and the local research and development efforts of its in-house scientist.

"All these product benefits make this the best product in the market for the moment," Dr Seow said.

He said the sanitiser can be sprayed onto smartphone screens, keyboards, and doorknobs. Dr Liu added that she uses the DS Skin Clinic's sanitiser on her phone, bag, and hands. She will reapply the sanitiser after visiting the washroom and performing surgery.

Effective

Singapore's National Environment Agency lists 70% ethyl alcohol and 0.05% benzalkonium chloride as the respective working concentrations for the two active ingredients in sanitiser that are effective against coronaviruses. The DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer contains 75% ethyl alcohol and 0.1% benzalkonium chloride, and has been found by independent German laboratory Eurofins to be highly effective and fast-acting in killing 99.99% of most household germs and viruses.

Lasts up to 24 hours

The DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer remains effective for 24 hours after the initial application. The all-day protection is enabled by a skin-friendly, non-greasy waterproofing polymer film formed over the skin after the alcohol evaporates. This prevents the active ingredients from being washed away, and provides long-lasting protection against germs.

“The all-day protection is enabled by encapsulating 0.1% benzalkonium chloride (BKC), a very effective antimicrobial compound, in a polymer. After the alcohol fully evaporates, this forms a thin waterproof, disinfecting layer over the skin and further prevents the BKC from being washed away. This can last 24 hours even with mild handwashing*,” said Dr Seow.

Dr Seow shared Eurofins data that showed the DS Skin Clinic All-Day Hand Sanitizer had a near-zero count for germs 24 hours after application. A competitor brand containing alcohol had more than 5 million germs after the same time, whereas a competitor brand that contained no alcohol featured more than 0.5 million germs after 24 hours.

Gentle on skin

DS Skin Clinic added a vitamin C-based emollient oil and glycerin to the formula to hydrate skin, so that repeated and prolonged application of the hand sanitiser will not cause any skin irritation or damage. "Many antimicrobial compounds too harsh for skin," Dr Seow said, listing bleaching agents typically used to clean floors as an example of something that will kill germs, but would be unsuitable for our skin.

“From a commercial perspective, this represents a business opportunity because of the lack of such a product locally and worldwide,” observed Dr Loh.

The US CDC supports the use of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR) for the effective reduction of pathogens that may be present on the hands of healthcare providers after brief interactions with patients or the care environment. It recommends the use of ABHR with greater than 60% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% isopropanol.

DS Skin Clinic (Dermatology & Surgery Skin Clinic and its international group of clinics) is a private dermatology practice in Singapore. It offers services for all dermatology conditions affecting skin, hair and nails. A full range of surgical, laser and aesthetic services are provided, including Mohs Micrographic Surgery. All of its dermatologists are specialists accredited by the Singapore Ministry of Health with listings under the Specialist Registry.

New media intelligence platform launched in Singapore, Australia

Truescope, founded John Croll and Michael Bade, is set to challenge the media intelligence industry.

Launched in Singapore and Australia, the cloud-based platform is designed to inform communicators about breaking news as well as consumer sentiment, brand awareness, campaign performance, and customer experience in real time. The technology analyses millions of social and mainstream media stories using machine learning and natural language processing, determining sentiment, potential effects on brand reputation and contributing to measures for brand awareness and communications effectiveness.

"We think our approach to people, product and scalability is revolutionary in this space, and we all have the unequivocal mindset that the client experience is central to everything we do. We're ready to build bridges between new technologies and the communications industry so our clients can immediately understand the value Truescope brings and see how different we are to what has come before us," said Croll.

As part of its expansion across Asia-Pacific, Truescope has partnered with Dataxet, a data intelligence company. Truescope has also secured official partnerships with Twitter and major publishers.

David Liu, Founder of Dataxet said, "Truescope will be a great opportunity for us to champion smarter media intelligence for brands, using Singapore as a strategic launch pad."

Jason Lee, Managing Partner of Dataxet and CEO of Truescope Singapore shared, "The future of media intelligence goes beyond traditional clippings or collation of brand mentions. Smart media intelligence provides critical objective insights about a brand or organisation in the media that can be accurately and rapidly delivered to C-suites and management in order to be fed back into brand strategy, positioning and product development. Combine media intelligence with internal brand data such as sales, revenue and CRM data, and you start closing the ROI loop in your marketing and communications efforts."

CRM stands for customer relationship management; ROI for return on investment.

E-marketplace targets SME retailers in Java

Ula, a marketplace app that uses technology to modernise distribution and credit in traditional retail, has grown 10x since launch with customers returning to buy up to three times of their original volumes.

Ula’s success is highlighted by the fact that stores purchased more in May amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19 than ever before, Ula points out.

Launched in January 2020 and headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ula is a multi-category wholesale e-commerce marketplace that combines the technology, tools and skills of modern retail with the lean cost structure of traditional micro-retail. Its customers are small retailers which typically have deep, personalised insights into consumer behaviour, but also face poor sourcing and suboptimal working capital.

“A typical store has an 8-10% cost advantage over modern retailers given that they are usually tax-exempt, employ their own family and operate out of their homes. Yet they aren’t competitive for8 lack of access to best sourcing and limited and expensive working capital,” said Derry Sakti, co-founder of Ula.

“For example, a grocery store might need to source inventory from up to 50 different sources (wholesalers/distributors) every week and sometimes order in bulk to get better rates, even when they don’t need such large quantities.”

Ula is currently in private beta and predominantly servicing East Java, with plans to expand further, both in geographies converted and products offered. The company offers small retailers consumer goods and staples, doorstep delivery and pay-later options. This allows small retailers to store less inventory and reduce the likelihood of going out of stock as they can order as much as they expect to sell daily. Ula also uses data science to give working capital credit to retailers.

“Seventy to 80% of the retailers in emerging markets like Indonesia are plagued by inefficiencies in supply chain, inventory and working capital management. With more and more Indonesian SMEs becoming open to adopting technology, platforms like Ula are an easy, affordable and scalable solution to help these retailers streamline their businesses.

"Ula has a highly experienced team bringing together the right mix of experience in local and global e-commerce, retail and fintech markets and we are excited to be early partners in this journey,” said Abheek Anand, MD, Sequoia Capital (India) Singapore.

“For us, the true measure of Ula’s success will be in how much we can improve our customers' lives and businesses. Our collective vision is to revolutionise SME trade using technology, helping increase their efficiency and providing them with tools to conduct their business seamlessly and more profitably,” said Riky Tenggara, co-founder of Ula.

“At SMDV, we are committed to technological betterment of Indonesia. We believe Ula’s grassroots driven approach combined with global e-commerce best practices can have a lasting positive impact on Indonesia’s retail sector,” said Roderick Purwana, Managing Partner, SMDV.

Stephen Liang, Assistant Executive Director of HKTDC said: "Startups have been affected by the economic downturn like much of the world but the true essence of entrepreneurship is persistence in the face of adversity. There can always be opportunities found amid what otherwise appears to be a crisis.

"Traditional business and consumption models are seeing a new normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which can in turn increase receptiveness to new ideas. With outstanding achievements in innovation and technology, local startups launched products and services to fight against the pandemic.

"The HKTDC will continue to support local startups in exploring business opportunities amid the pandemic-struck economy, and to promote the city's capabilities in innovation and technology to overseas buyers."

Calvin Choi, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO, AMTD Group - and one of the judges - said: "I am impressed by the innovative ideas and practical solutions presented by our city's young entrepreneurs in this year's Start-up Express Pitching Final presentation. This recurring programme serves as a valuable platform for participants to showcase their unique business ideas and demonstrate the innovative power of the young generation in Hong Kong.

"The current business landscape is full of challenges, but for startups that are agile and versatile in responding to changing conditions and market needs, they can definitely identify and seize the best out of available emerging opportunities."

Jason Chiu, Chairman, Hong Kong Startup Council, said: "In every entrepreneurial journey, there are bound to be challenging times and the strength of a true entrepreneur is the ability to fight through the hard times and learn from each setback. This year has been especially trying due to the health situation that has impacted businesses globally but these startups have shown the resilience to fight through the adversity and succeed.

"It has been great to see how this batch of startups have navigated the past few months to present themselves in a shining light, ready to embrace new opportunities on the international market through Start-up Express' unique support system. The programme helps entrepreneurs build connections and seek opportunities with potential investors and partners. I look forward to the winning startups joining HKStartupSociety and realise their dreams of not only excelling in Hong Kong but on the international stage."

The startups will be invited to exploratory sessions, power meet-up sessions with successful business leaders, business-matching sessions and local events organised by the HKTDC, including Start-up Zones at the Asian Financial Forum, spring and autumn editions of the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair and HKTDC Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair. The HKTDC will also bring the startups to the international stage by organising overseas missions and setting up Hong Kong Pavilions at international technology exhibitions - including CES in Las Vegas and MWC in Barcelona.

A key driver for Start-up Express participants has been the opportunity to enhance brand and media awareness, while also connecting with mentors, partners and investors through HKTDC-organised local and overseas events. This has provided startups with the chance to learn from experts and strengthen their core business.

Start-Up Express past winners include Miscato, which developed and patented aromatherapy solutions that can be controlled with a mobile app, and Quikec International, which developed a one-stop cloud-based supply chain management solution.

Michelle Fno, Founder & CEO of Miscato said: "HKTDC's strong network has helped us land interview opportunities with local and overseas media outlets, which in turn allowed me to share how my company developed our new series of antiviral smart aromatherapy products. Thanks to this increased exposure and HKTDC's support, we've since been able to capture new business opportunities and expand our clientele."

Peter Li, President and Co-founder of Quikec International said: "Start-up Express has provided us an opportunity to participate in different exhibition and international exchange events. This has helped us expand our client base and find excellent partners despite operating on a tight budget. In response to calls in Singapore's Fortitude Budget for more support for upskilling, digital adoption, and financial support for vulnerable communities, PwC Singapore has launched several new initiatives to support individuals and organisations through the COVID-19 pandemic. This move is part of PwC Singapore’s commitment to be part of the solution to support groups that have been impacted by COVID-19.

Yeoh Oon Jin, Executive Chairman, PwC Singapore, said: “We want to play our part in solving some of the important problems that people may be facing now. From preparing individuals for the digital future to supporting non-profit organisations that provide meals to vulnerable individuals and families, we hope that the actions that we are taking can help our community tide through the current situation and be ready for the new normal.”

The need for continuous upskilling and reskilling to become part of the “new normal” was highlighted in the Fortitude Budget. In response, PwC Singapore is making their learning app free for all from 8 June 2020. Digital Fitness for the World will allow users to assess their digital acumen, gain access to recommended learning materials to be more digitally-aware and also gain insight on business and economic issues relevant to our evolving environment.

Fang Eu-Lin, Leader of PwC’s Academy in Singapore, said, “The Digital Fitness App was first used by PwC to help upskill our people’s capabilities in a digital and evolving world. We have updated the app so that this can be made available for use by the whole community. We hope individuals will use the app to gain good knowledge and insights on digital topics, and find it a fun way to learn!”

In addition, PwC Singapore aims to help support SMEs to accelerate their digital adoption journeys with dedicated digital advisory services, solutions and upskilling tailored for the unique needs of this segment.

PwC Singapore has also launched complimentary virtual workshops specifically for charities, social entrepreneurs and social service agencies. The firm conducted a series of four virtual workshops - on digital strategy and transformation, data and analytics, digital marketing and social media, and digital trust and cybersecurity – aimed at helping them address the challenges and opportunities of digital disruption in the social and non-profit sectors. This is part of PwC Singapore’s ongoing skills-based volunteering efforts.

Go for online gifting in Singapore with Knots & Gifts

The bespoke service is the brainchild of Singaporean self-made entrepreneur Rubina Tiyu, who had to pivot her business from wedding planning to e-commerce gifting. The idea has also given her the opportunity to work with some of her favourite retail shops.

“Inside the Knot was a successful wedding planning and events company, but when COVID-19 struck, I was stuck with a warehouse full of props and no weddings to plan. I had to quickly come up with an idea that would not only be meaningful, after all we’re in the business of creating moments and experiences, but also appeal to people during this crisis.” said Tiyu.

There are currently over 20 options for curated hampers of baked food and drinks, including the Butter Cake Bundle (S$58) consisting of butter cake (choice of plain, almond, orange or cranberry) and four muffins along with sparkling tea by The Gryphon Tea Company, and The Tea Party Set (S$188) - featuring scones, mushroom quiches and croissants by Patisserie G, Basque burnt cheesecake by Aitor, cranberry pecan cookies, jams, fresh berries, Gryphon Tea and flowers.

Gifters can choose preselected food and drink hampers under Munchies, omakase flowers (no two designs are the same) under Petals and Foliage, and bundled pampering gifts (look under Lifestyle). They can also order ala carte items under Marketplace at www.knotsandgifts.com. A 48-hour notice is required for all orders.
