Huawei celebrates National Day with Singaporeans

To celebrate Singapore’s 55th birthday, Huawei has brought the national colours to the public through five local photographers – Bryan van der Beek, Don Lee, Junaidi Lim, Zipeng Lee and Jovanne Amolat. From behind the lens of their HUAWEI P40 Series smartphones, these photographers have captured everyday sights in celebration of the local spirit, and shed light on new ways to view the things all around us.

New HUAWEI MatePad supports wireless, reverse wireless charging

Designed for creators, the HUAWEI MatePad delivers Huawei’s signature large display that with ultra-narrow 4.9 mm¹ bezels and the world’s highest tablet screen-to-body ratio at 90%².

One of its key features is that it supports wireless and reverse wireless charging, the first of its kind for a tablet. Bluetooth-enabled accessories to elevate the experience with the HUAWEI MatePad series include the HUAWEI M-Pencil³ for intuitive writing, and the Smart Magnetic Keyboard³.

HUAWEI Matebook X Pro available for preordering in Singapore

The Huawei Consumer Business Group is expanding its laptop lineup in Singapore with the launch of the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro. To celebrate this, consumers will receive attractive gift bundles worth S$250-S$1,200 for the purchase of selected laptops from up to 16 August 2020.

Huawei launches wireless audio speaker

The Huawei Consumer Business Group has announced a number of consumer products in addition to a new iteration of its flagship P series smartphones, including the HUAWEI Sound X, a new wireless HUAWEI speaker.

The HUAWEI Sound X is an all-new Huawei-Devialet joint wireless speaker that the company says will revolutionise high-end acoustic technology. Devialet is a global audio brand that is known for premium hi-fi products. The company produces power and performance within a limited-sized body, while providing distortion-free sound even at maximum volume levels and low-pitched vibrations that can literally be felt in the listener's bones.
As the first top-notch wireless speaker product from the Chinese telecommunications giant, the HUAWEI Sound X marries first-rate aesthetics with exquisite craftsmanship, and has already been recognised by the 2020 iF Design Award committee for its appearance. The main, glossy portion of the body is crafted with an advanced non-conductive vacuum electroplating process to ensure quality signal transmission and reception. The lower portion uses a seamless cover that further facilitates free, lossless transmission.

The HUAWEI Sound X comes equipped with Devialet's patented signal-processing SAM (speaker active matching) technology. SAM introduces an efficient compensation algorithm that is capable of adapting output signal to match the specific characteristics of the speaker and minimise sound distortion.

The HUAWEI Sound X has twin subwoofers that deliver 60 W of bass, while remaining compact. The Push-Push structure places the two high-power speakers symmetrically, so that their back-wave vibrations cancel each other out. This means even when the walls are shaking from the bass, the Sound X body remains cool.

The HUAWEI Sound X plays audio via Wi-Fi, a process that leads to much less data compression, and fewer lag or latency issues than Bluetooth transmission. That is built on HUAWEI’s self-developed technology, EMUI 10.1 Multi-Device Control Panel which is similar to Apple’s Airplay. 

The HUAWEI Sound X is designed for seamless interaction with smart devices. Gently tapping the phone against the HUAWEI Sound X transmits audio to the speaker, while calls can be answered on the HUAWEI Sound X in call mode with a tap of the hand.

Huawei announces EMUI10 update schedule

Huawei has announced the global schedule for Huawei devices receiving the free EMUI10 update. The latest version of EMUI10 introduces a new interface, Dark Mode, improved performance and security and support for Multi-screen Collaboration, a new feature that enables seamless connectivity between Huawei PCs and Android devices.

Beginning this month, the HUAWEI P30 Pro, HUAWEI P30, HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, HUAWEI Mate 20, HUAWEI Mate 20 X (4G) and HUAWEI nova 5T users will start receiving push notifications prompting them to install the EMUI10 update. Users may also check for eligibility by going to Settings > System > Software Update on their devices. 

The update will be made globally available to the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS, HUAWEI Mate 20 X(5G), HUAWEI P30 lite, HUAWEI nova 4e, HUAWEI P20, HUAWEI P20 Pro, HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 10, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS, HUAWEI Mate 20 lite, HUAWEI P smart 2019, HUAWEI P smart + 2019, HUAWEI P smart Pro, HUAWEI P Smart Z, HUAWEI nova 4 and HUAWEI nova Lite 3 in later months.

A new interface

EMUI10 features an all-new interface that draws inspiration from magazine layouts. Titles are presented in a much larger font for emphasis, and a grid system consolidates elements across the user interface (UI) to create a more focused layout that greatly improves the navigation experience.

A new muted colour palette consisting of six ashen colours inspired by the artist Giorgio Morandi adds subtle elegance to the Contacts interface. App icons are revised with respect to the golden ratio for a more consistent and appealing look.

The Camera app has been redesigned for simplicity. Aside from the shutter button, which now has a more modernised look, the zoom bar is larger, enabling users to more easily finetune the degree of magnification. Switching modes now triggers a large text prompt on the viewfinder to clearly indicate the change.

Additional filters are accessible directly from the viewfinder, allowing users to add artistic flair to their photos even before the shot is taken.

Dark Mode

An all-new Dark Mode presents a more comfortable way to navigate the UI. Re-engineered based on ergonomic test results conducted by Huawei’s Human Factors Lab, the upgraded feature ensures maximum legibility in the darkened interface. Colour saturation has also been adjusted so that the perceived colours are consistent between normal mode and Dark Mode.

More natural animation

UI elements now react to touch inputs quicker and in a way that is better aligned with expectations. The duration of various animations have been optimised for smoothness and comfort. Tapping an object now triggers a spring motion that varies depending on the size of the element. To deliver a smoother experience, transitions now feature double the frames compared to EMUI 9.1. When users swipe up to minimise an app, the animation follows the trajectory of the swipe. The speed of the animation is based on the speed, direction and release point of the swipe, with respect to the laws of physics.

Improved performance and security

The new Deterministic Latency Engine intelligently optimises resource allocation for foreground apps and processes to ensure they are allocated the system resources necessary for consistent optimal performance. The upgraded GPU Turbo feature reduces touch latency while delivering improved gaming performance and battery efficiency.

An isolated secure system is part of EMUI10. The microkernel of this system has achieved CC EAL 5+, the highest level of security certification for consumer device OSes globally. All payment, authentication and other sensitive operations are run on-device, preventing potential interception and theft. The connection setup, data transfer and stored information between devices are also encrypted in the system.

Multi-screen Collaboration

EMUI10 includes a new way for Huawei devices to interact with each other. Based on distributed computing, Multi-screen Collaboration enables a seamless connection between Huawei PCs and smartphones. After a simple pairing process, the smartphone can be directly controlled on the laptop display using the peripherals connected to the PC. Transferring files between the devices is as simple as dragging and dropping. The clipboard is shared between the PC and the smartphone, allowing users to copy text on one device and paste it on another.

Huawei has announced its inaugural film awards, HUAWEI Film Awards (HFA), in the Asia Pacific region to encourage and inspire film-makers and content creators to showcase their creativity through stories filmed using Huawei smartphones that contain top-of-the-line mobile camera technology.

Themed Empowering Your Possibilities, the HFA will kick off in Singapore with an event at SCAPE on 21 December from 6 pm. Local director Boris Boo will be the guest of honour, with one of his own films premiering at the event.

Through the HFA, Huawei hopes to play a part in driving innovation and creativity within filmmaking through the use of smartphones, and highlight how mobile filmography is possible with advanced technology progression that fits complex camera capabilities in a smartphone camera.

“The HUAWEI Film Awards is an Asia-Pacific festival dedicated to celebrating work shot on any Huawei mobile phone, with the goal of uncovering and supporting the talents of tomorrow. The festival aims to nurture the interest of local creative talents in smartphone film production by expanding their scope and freedom to create breathtaking films, thus providing them an entryway into the world of smartphone filmmaking,” said Phil Xu, MD of Consumer Business Group Singapore.

“We hope this platform will enhance collaboration between local film makers, content creators and talents, encouraging them to share new filming knowledge, showcase smartphone cinematography skills, and gain recognition at national and regional levels.”

The HFA is now calling for entries from smartphone film-makers and content creators from now till 25 February 2020 (11:59 pm, GMT+8). Submissions must be filmed entirely on a Huawei mobile phone with a running time within 10 minutes, following the theme Empowering Your Possibilities.

Judges will include five prominent trailblazers in the film and broadcasting scene: Malaysian film and television producer and screenwriter Adele Lim, Thai postmodern author Prabda Yoon, and Rajay Singh, senior founder partner of film and TV commercial production company Directors Think Tank. Joining them are Alex Lin, Asia Pacific President of Huawei Consumer Business Group, and Chris Humphrey, who oversees regional broadcasting at A+E Networks.

The winner of the APAC Best Film at the HFA receives US$20,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to Bangkok, Thailand for the awards ceremony. The winners of HFA will be announced regionally on 6 March 2020. The lineup of awards include APAC Best Director, APAC Best Cinematography, APAC Best Actor (Male or Female), and Country Level Best Film. Winners of all categories will receive a trophy and certificate. The winner of Country Level Best Film in Singapore will also walk away with additional prizes.

More than 200 technology enthusiasts and loyal supporters queued hours before the official release of latest Huawei flagship phone, the Mate 30 Series on November 16 in Singapore to receive exclusive gift bundles with every purchase.

First-in-line Mr Kong had queued since 11 pm the night before. He said, “I’m very happy to be the first in Singapore to officially buy the Mate 30. I’m purchasing it for my wife, who has been a Huawei user for six years and loves the high-quality camera in Huawei phones.”

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Series is engineered with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and a quad camera system, taking mobile videography to the next level. Mr Maheswaran has been using Huawei devices for a couple of years, since the HUAWEI Mate 10 release. “I’ve been getting the phones the moment they’ve been launched for a couple of years now, and I don’t see that stopping. Using HMS system will be fine with me, and I believe the features of the phone are more important, like their camera,” he said.


Aovindaras Prabhu was there planning to purchase the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro for his wife. He said, “The OLED display is what caught her eye, especially together with its camera functions like the Leica lens and its slow-motion effects. We use our phone mainly for photos, and seeing this is one of the best, I’m excited for her to try it out.”


Muhammad Halim Irsyad said he would like to explore the HMS ecosystem and the HUAWEI AppGallery. Through HUAWEI AppGallery, users can search and download mobile apps from 18 different categories such as games, education, lifestyle, daily essentials, and fashion.

“As a developer myself, the phone not having preinstalled Google applications doesn’t set me back because then I can start discovering more,” he said. He added that the HUAWEI Mate 30 Series has many functions that can give him an optimised user experience, citing its wireless charging and camera capabilities as a draw.

Announced in August this year, the HUAWEI Shining-Star Programme supports mobile app developers all around the world. Developers under this programme will be given priority to access Huawei’s open capabilities and receive incentive support in marketing their products and services.

More than 1.07 million developers have registered as HUAWEI developers, and over 50,000 apps have already integrated to the HMS Core. US$1 billion has been invested in the programme so far.

EMUI 9.1 rollout reaches Huawei smartphones in Singapore

Huawei Consumer Business Group has been rolling out its latest EMUI 9.1 software update from June 27 in Singapore. EMUI 9.1 is Huawei’s customised user interface based on Android 9.0 Pie.

The update will be launched in different phases starting with the Mate 20 Series in late June, followed by P20 Series and Nova 3 Series in July and subsequent models including Mate RS, P10 and P10 Plus in August.

Users can update their device on the HiCare app in their Huawei handsets under ‘Services’ and ‘Update’. With the new updates, users will be able to enjoy new and enhanced features depending on their phone models listed below:

Launched end-2012, the first edition of EMUI was known as Emotion UI 1.0 and built on Android 4.0. The user interface received its current name with the introduction of EMUI 3.0 in 2014 and a new app store for the China market. In 2017, EMUI 8.0 was launched alongside the release of Huawei Mate 10, with a renewed focus on its AI capabilities. The EMUI 9.0, based on Android 9 Pie, was released alongside the Huawei Mate 20 series. The Huawei P30 series was launched along with the latest EMUI 9.1 system with improved features.

In April 2019, Wang Chenglu, president of the software department at the Huawei Consumer Business Group said that Huawei's EMUI skin had reached over 480 million daily active users. EMUI is now available in 77 languages across 216 regions in the world.

As of June 3, 2019, the number of users that have upgraded from EMUI 8 to EMUI 9 has exceeded 80 million globally and continues to grow. It is estimated that this figure will reach 100 million by the end of June.

Huawei reassures phone and tablet users that it will continue to provide support

A Reuters story has shared that Google plans to "suspend business with Huawei" on software, hardware and services that are not open source as a result of a US government decision against Huawei. This is set to affect new phones from Huawei, and not existing phones.

Android also tweeted that Google Play and security functions from Google Play will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.

For Huawei users' questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.

Huawei has released an official statement in response:

"Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

"Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.

"We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally."

That said, the reactions on Reddit have ranged from deciding the phones are no longer useable immediately, the phones will no longer be useable in future, what it means to the Huawei phone strategy, whether the US might change its stance to thinking of ways to get around the ban.

The US government added Huawei to its Entity List on May 16. According to the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS): "Huawei has been determined by the US government to be acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States.  BIS is also adding Huawei’s non-US affiliates to the Entity List because they pose a significant risk of becoming involvement in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States due to their relationship with Huawei.  Huawei will be listed on the Entity List under the destination of China.  This final rule also adds to the Entity List 72 non-US affiliates of Huawei located in 26 destinations: Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Vietnam."

Huawei to sell laptops in Singapore

- Singapore customers can buy the HUAWEI MateBook 13 and MateBook X Pro from May 30, 2019.

- HUAWEI P30 Pro in Amber Sunrise will be available for units with 512 GB storage.

The Huawei Consumer Business Group Singapore has announced that it will be expanding its product offerings in Singapore from smartphones and smartwatches to laptops. The laptop range includes the latest HUAWEI MateBook 13 and MateBook X Pro.

Huawei Mobile Services has partnered with Original Workshop, the makers of the otome game My Omamori, to offer exclusive rewards to mobile gamers.

Otome games are games targeted at a female demographic. An omamori (お守り) is a lucky charm that is meant to provide luck or protection. 

In My Omamori, an ancient warrior named Toki Mamoru returns to the present to be the player's guardian angel. Japanese sound actor Yuki Ono voices Mamoru, and the plots are written by Taiwanese novelist Deer Li. Mamoru will also act as a virtual assistant, providing alarm, schedule management, and health reminders, and can also make recommendations on food and clothing.
 
HUAWEI AppGallery, the company's official app store, recently launched the game and is rewarding HUAWEI mobile game players with exclusively-designed outfits. Users can claim the Workplace Smarties outfit from the HUAWEI AppGallery gift centre. The complementary My Omamori print novel is currently featured in Taiwan book stores. HUAWEI users can also find a HUAWEI AppGallery QR code on book covers offering limited outfits for redemption.

HUAWEI P30 sells out on first day in Singapore

The HUAWEI P30 Series made its debut at VivoCity in Singapore yesterday, where the phone was sold out by noon. Hundreds were in line to buy the the latest flagship in Huawei's photography-first smartphone family, with the first in line queuing as early as 9 pm the day before.

Since its global launch in France last week, the Huawei P30 Series had become known for its integrated Leica Quad Camera, a world’s first, with industry-leading zoom capabilities and low-light performance.

Yvelyn Tey was first in line with get fiance to buy the phone. She will be using a Huawei smartphone for the first time.

She said, “I started to know about Huawei since its launch of its previous Mate 20 Series and I have heard great reviews of the phone ever since. My fiancé has also been raving to me about the cameras on Huawei. I often use my phone to take photos so having a good camera is really key for me. When I heard about the night mode of the P30 Series, I was very impressed.”

Next in line was another couple, Valerie Kang and her boyfriend camped overnight for the Huawei P30 Series. “When we saw how the Mate 20 Series was sold out so quickly last year, we decided to arrive early last night to be safe so that we can get our P30 Pro together,” said Kang.

“We have never used a Huawei before and we are very excited to use the camera because of the good reviews that we have read online.”
Francis Toh, decided to switch to Huawei after being convinced by his wife, Mrs Amy Toh, who has used the Huawei Mate 10 and P20 Pro. He said, “When I compared the images taken from my phone and my wife’s, I was very amazed with the detail and the difference was very obvious. Huawei Consumer Business Group has announced the availability of EMUI 9.0 for its Mate 10 and P20 smartphone series.

The EMUI 9.0 update will be open to Mate 10 series, P20 and Mate RS users from 18 December, while users of the P20 Pro will be able to receive the update from 24 December.

The EMUI 9.0 is Huawei’s custom Android P-based operating system (OS) developed to Enable a Quality Life. It comes with improved performance and new features:

EMUI 9.0 provides a simplified design inspired by nature. The design applies scenes of nature in everything from colour selections to default caller portraits. Users can also immerse themselves in another layer of natural experience with natural ambient sounds like birds chirping and flowing water in ringtones and alarm alerts.

Gesture navigation

The new EMUI 9.0 update supports a new mode of navigation – gestures. Instead of tapping buttons, users can intuitively control their device with swipes. Apps run faster and navigation is simplified, too. This is the most ergonomic EMUI yet.

HiVision

With HiVision, users can ask the Internet for more information about objects of interest by pointing the camera towards them. Launched on 30 December 2012, the first edition of EMUI was known as Emotion UI 1.0 and built on Android 4.0. Through annual upgrades, the operating system has evolved into an intelligent software environment with user-friendly features added in to complement the hardware upgrade. The user interface received its current name, EMUI, with the introduction of EMUI 3.0 in 2014 and a new app store for the China market.

In 2017, EMUI 8.0 was launched alongside the release of Huawei Mate 10, with a renewed focus on its AI capabilities. The beta version of EMUI 9.0, based on Android 9 Pie, was launched for testing this year and released alongside the Huawei Mate 20 series. The full update to all Huawei phones is being launched in phases from end 2018.

The news follows the launch of the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS in Singapore from 1 December 2018. The premium variant of the Mate 20 Series is exclusively sold in Singapore and offers a sleek handcrafted exterior with intelligent functionality.

The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS features distinctive racing stripe motifs that are designed with glass and genuine Italian grade leather. Built for speed, the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS houses a 4,200 mAh battery that supports German TÜV Safe Fast-Charge System-certified 40 W HUAWEI SuperCharge fast-charging technology. Tested to the limits by Huawei’s engineers, the battery in PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS supports more than a full day of intensive use. Utilising the 40 W HUAWEI SuperCharge, users can charge their battery to approximately 70% (2,940 mAh) in 30 minutes. A HUAWEI Wireless Charger supporting 15W HUAWEI Wireless Quick Charge is also available and sold separately at a recommended retail price of S$98. The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS also supports HUAWEI Wireless Reverse Charge, which allows it to charge other Qi-enabled devices.
