Temple University in Singapore to offer discussion on competitor analysis

The November session for Temple University's Knowledge Leadership Series will feature Professor Robert Hamilton, a faculty member in the Strategic Management Department at Temple University since 1981 who has won seven awards for outstanding teaching.

Dr Hamilton will discuss competitor analysis during a seminar titled The gap between strategic intent and core capability: a useful practitioner's guide to competitor analysis.

Competitors in an industry can be mapped according to their core capabilities and strategic intent. The matrix that results allows the strategist to decide who the most formidable competitors are. Dr Hamilton will illustrate the concepts through a graphic representation of players in the automobile industry over a ten-year timeframe, and also discuss:

Strategic intent
This sets the vision for the organisation and communicates the rewards for achieving the goals associated with this vision. It inspires the organisation to allocate resources appropriately to reach desired outcomes, and typically requires the organisation to rethink its priorities.

Core capabilities

These are the firm's competencies, a set of differentiated skills, complementary assets and routines that provide the basis for a firm's sustainable competitive advantage.

Temple University in Singapore hosts two class previews in mid-November

Temple University is offering introductions to two graduate programmes on 15 November in Singapore for those interested in human resource management and executive MBAs respectively.

The Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MSHRM) is designed for HR professionals who wish to be real business partners geared towards managing the "human capital within the enterprise".

The MSHRM covers aspects of HR like leadership, communications, strategic challenges in HR, managing rewards, best practices in HR, and negotiations, among others. The course comprises 10 modules in 10 months. All courses are taught by faculty who are US-based.

A second class preview for the part time Fox School of Business executive MBA (EMBA) programme will run concurrently with the MSHRM presentation. Sixteen modules can be completed in 15 months. The EMBA is taught by US professors from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Free business risk management workshop this August

Temple University is hosting another free workshop in Singapore, this time for risk management in business. Conducted by Professor Michael Hubbel, Professor Emeritus at Olivet College, on the faculty for the MBA programmes at the Fox School of Business at Temple University, and the Center for Professional Education in the Tobin School of Business at St. John’s University. 

Hubbel will talk about planning for unexpected losses before they occur, specifically the enterprise risk management process, actual business risks, and risk management objectives, tools and techniques. Seven risk management tools will be discussed, from avoidance to hedging. 

Hubbel will also draw on his extensive background in insurance to provide tips on selecting the right insurance partner.
