"We're moving ahead while other smartphone vendors play catchup": Huawei

It's all about a higher intelligence: the Huawei Consumer Business Group has unveiled the new HUAWEI Mate 20 series, which pushes what people dream of into the doable, under the motto Aesthetics meets Innovation.

Available in 6.53", 6.39" and 7.2" sizes, the HUAWEI Mate 20 Series comprises the HUAWEI Mate 20, HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, HUAWEI Mate 20 X and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS.

“Smartphones are an important entrance to the digital world. The HUAWEI Mate 20 Series is designed to be the best ‘mate’ of consumers, accompanying and empowering them to enjoy a richer, more fulfilled life with their higher intelligence, unparallelled battery lives and powerful camera performance,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group at the launch on October 16.

Looks

Compactly engineered, every device from the 6.39" HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro to the 7.2" HUAWEI Mate 20 X is meant to be comfortably used with a single hand.

Natural elements have influenced the HUAWEI Mate 20 Series. In particular the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro’s chassis is curved on all eight sides. There is no longer a speaker grille - Saiful Amri, Product & Training Manager, Huawei Consumer Business Group Singapore, described it as an "invisible Type C" speaker.

An iconic square encircled in a polished metal frame, inspired by a four-point headlight,  combines a Leica Triple Camera and a flash creates an aesthetic signature for the rear of the HUAWEI Mate 20 series.

The flagship series comes in a new Emerald Green colourway. A new Hyper Optical Pattern on the glass back is a complex hairline pattern that produces a durable iridescent effect and also makes the device easy to grip and fingerprint-resistant. The devices are designed to retain a clean look even when they have been used extensively.

For the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS, Huawei and Porsche Design ingeniously combined race track elements with premium materials to create a device that exudes elegance and offers a firm, ergonomic grip. This model is further differentiated by an iconic glass band running down the length of the back.

As an expression of the HUAWEI Mate Series DNA, all devices carry a FullView display with a high screen-to-body ratio. The HUAWEI Mate 20 features a Dewdrop barely-there notch at the top, maximising screen-to-body ratio.

Security

The Porsche Design HUAWEI Mate 20 RS makes use of dual biometric identification. The 3D Depth Sensing Camera scans over 30,000 facial points to create a unique identification key. The phone also recognises fingerprints.

Processor

The Mate 20 series is powered by Huawei’s densest and highest performing system-on-a-chip (SoC) to date—the Kirin 980. The SoC fits 6.9 billion transistors within a die the size of a fingernail. Huawei has designed a three-tier architecture that consists of two ultra-large cores, two large cores and four small cores. This grants the CPU the flexibility to allocate the optimal amount of resources to heavy, medium and light tasks for unprecedented levels of efficiency, simultaneously improving the performance of the SoC while enhancing the battery life.

Compared to its predecessor the Kirin 970, the Kirin 980 is equipped with CPU that is 75% more powerful, GPU that is 46% more powerful and a neural processor unit (NPU) that is 226% more powerful. The efficiency of the components has also improved: the CPU is 58% more efficient, GPU is 178% more efficient, and the NPU is 182% more efficient.

Manufactured with a 7 nm process, the Kirin 980 is the world’s first commercial SoC to use the Cortex A76-based cores. The CPU and and Mali G76 GPU multi-core architecture enables a boost in performance over previous models. Two cores are used for turbo performance; two cores for sustained performance; and four handle power efficiency depending on the apps in use. When it comes to gaming, for example, all eight cores will be in use. Music will only leverage the cores for efficiency.

The Kirin 980 is also the industry’s first SoC to be equipped with a Dual-NPU, granting it higher On-Device AI processing capability to support any and all AI applications. One of the DUAL-NPU chips is dedicated to AI computing while the other focuses on specific tasks.

Both the HUAWEI Mate 20 and HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro are to be available in Singapore. Both phones have a 75% performance upgrade1; 58% CPU performance efficiency upgrade1, 46% GPU performance boost1; and 178% GPU performance efficiency improvement1 over their predecessors, the HUAWEI Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Connectivity

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro is the world’s first smartphone to support the 4.5G LTE Cat. 21 standard, allowing consumers to experience download speeds of up to 1.4 Gbps1. It also supports the world’s fastest Wi-Fi connection speeds. The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro enables up to 1,733 Mpbs2 in Wi-Fi download speeds - 2 GB footage requires only 10 seconds to download.

The top-end flagship also supports dual-band (L1+L5) GPS positioning technology. The AI GPS Satellite Selection technology enhances the positioning accuracy across a wide range of scenarios.

Battery

The new 40 W HUAWEI SuperCharge, 15 W HUAWEI Wireless Quick Charge - a fast wireless charging solution - and large batteries work in tandem to provide users with the best battery life. A 4,000 mAh3 battery with smarter AI power management fuels daily use for the HUAWEI Mate 20 while the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro houses a large, high-density 4,200 mAh battery.

HUAWEI SuperCharge technology with TÜV Safety certification supports a rapid charge of just 30 minutes to yield a 58% battery4 for the Mate 20, while the Mate 20 Pro leverages 40 W HUAWEI SuperCharge technology to obtain 70% charge in 30 minutes.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro also supports 15 W HUAWEI Wireless Quick Charge and Wireless Reverse Charge, which enables the device to work as a power bank for selected electronic devices supporting wireless charging. "Talk about mating," commented Amri.

Just switch the mode on and lay a compatible device on the back of the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, and the other device will begin to charge. In a demo during the sneak preview, an iPhone switched to charging mode after being placed on the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro.

With the Porsche Design HUAWEI Mate 20 RS, the 40 W HUAWEI SuperCharge5 and 15 W Wireless Quick Charge6 fuel a 4,200 mAh3 battery faster than ever.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 X supports an ultra-large 5,000 mAh battery, and is equipped with a revolutionary HUAWEI super cool system that uses a combination of graphene film and a vapour chamber to deliver outstanding cooling. With the cooling system in place, the CPU and GPU embedded in HUAWEI Mate 20 X can remain at full throttle for an extended period of time and deliver a smooth and satisfying gaming experience. The HUAWEI super cool system also marks the first time graphene has been utilised to cool smartphones.

Camera

The Matrix Camera System includes a Leica ultra wide angle lens that lets users not only see wider, but also closer with its new macro distance capability. The three lenses in the new Leica Triple Camera powered by AI forms a square (matrix) when coupled with a flash.

Each lens is designed for a different scenario. The 12 MP main RGB lens captures everyday details, while the 8 MP telephoto lens will focus on distant shots. The new 16 mm Leica ultra wide angle lens gives a sense of spaciousness and a three dimensional effect to images. The new camera system also supports macro distance, which produces crisp images of objects that are placed as close as 2.5 cm from the lens. Switch between wide angle and macro shots by moving a slider in camera mode to zoom in or out.

Through advanced AI Image Stabilization, the Night Mode will shoot blur-free and focused handheld photos in low light. It also balances high-contrast scenes - no more overexposed shots.

Recognising more than 1,500 scenarios and 25 categories, the upgraded AI-powered photography capability can now segment different objects and scenes within a single photo. Colours, white balance, brightness and contrast are adjusted automatically.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro is equipped with a 40 MP main camera, a 20 MP ultra wide-angle camera, and an 8 MP telephoto camera. Together, the trio of lenses supports a wide range of focal lengths (equivalent to the performance of a 16-270 mm zoom lens), enabling it to mimic the results from professional cameras.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Series also features an AI Portrait Color video mode. Using AI, the HUAWEI Mate 20 Series can isolate human subjects and desaturate the colours around them to dramatically highlight the person. AI Spotlight Reel identifies clips with a shared theme and auto-generates a montage made entirely of highlights. With the AI video zoom feature, the phone can identify a subject and track it automatically, so that the subject is always within the frame.

HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS both support 3D Face Unlock. The solution quickly and securely authenticates users within 0.6 s at a false acceptance rate of below 1/1,000,000. Using the 3D Depth Sensing Camera System located in the front, the two devices can accurately read the facial features of a subject and recognise even small details. Besides user authentication, this suite of sensors also enables the portrait beautification effects to be realised in a more natural and effective way.

The AI is also used for real-time translation. While the Mate 10 worked with Microsoft translation technology, Huawei is now using its own expertise for this.

Operating system

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Series ships with the highly customised Android P-based EMUI 9 operating system, on which users can access productivity and entertainment features with just a few taps and swipes.

Through AI self-learning algorithms, an integrated and granular resource allocation system, and a highly optimised Android environment, EMUI 9 will remain smooth even through extended use. Android operating systems typically begin to stutter over time.

EMUI 9.0 incorporates a unified, ergonomic design and a streamlined settings menu. The new gesture navigation support allows users to interact with their devices using just taps and swipes. It also introduces new AI features that enable the HUAWEI Mate 20 Series to perform or enhance a range of tasks from object identification to food calorie counting7. Using 3D Live Object Modeling, consumers can even create a digital avatar to dance or interact with.

As a key pillar supporting Huawei’s all-connected, all-scenario ecosystem, HUAWEI Share 3.0 improves device interconnection, allowing users to transfer files between smartphones and PCs. This Huawei-proprietary solution revolutionises the way images and videos are transferred: all it takes is one tap to establish a connection between a smartphone and PC for easy and fast file sharing8.

PC replacement

The HUAWEI Mate 20 allows users to project presentations, gaming or video immediately to a larger screen9. In this mode, messages can still be sent and phone calls made independently, with privacy protected.

Versatility

The IP68-rated10 water and dust resistant HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro can be taken through the rain.

A proprietary nano memory card offers storage of up to 256 GB.
