Cosmetics go organic in a big way

Rising health concerns, and increasing awareness about harmful effects of chemicals in conventional cosmetics and benefits associated with organic cosmetics are expected to drive the global organic cosmetics market through to 2021 according to a TechSci Research report, Global Organic Cosmetics Market By Product Type, By Point of Sale, By Region, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 - 2021.

TechSci Research, a research-based global management consulting firm. predicts that the global organic cosmetics market is projected to register a CAGR of over 13% during the 2016-2021 period. Organic cosmetics are manufactured using organic ingredients and without the use of chemicals. Growth in global organic cosmetics market can be attributed to factors such as increasing skin diseases, rising disposable income, growing awareness among consumers, increasing focus on environment and animal welfare, a widening distribution channel network coupled with increasing visibility and accessibility to organic cosmetics through retail outlets. Continuous product innovation is also expected to influence the global organic cosmetics market.

Rising standards of living and increasing personal disposable income has driven adoption of these cosmetics across the globe. In 2016, growth in consumption of organic cosmetics was witnessed globally as governments in many countries are taking initiatives to promote and encourage use of organic cosmetics. Additionally, governments in various countries have also laid regulatory, policy and safety legislations to improve quality of organic cosmetics.

Organic cosmetics are generally more popular among females, who accounted for more than 75% of the total organic skincare usage worldwide. L'Oréal, Estée Lauder, Avon, and the Revlon Group are few of the leading players in the global organic cosmetics market on the back of their wide range of product offerings, robust distribution network and huge consumer base. Many key players are also focusing on expanding their distribution network to online channels. However, exclusive retail stores and supermarkets/hypermarkets are anticipated to continue dominating sales of global organic cosmetics market through to 2021.

"Increasing pollution and unhealthy working lifestyles has driven adoption of alternatives such as organic cosmetics across the globe, especially among the youth. Younger generations prefer to use organic cosmetics, as it is free from high concentration of chemicals. Growing demand for organic cosmetics with multiple benefits claims such as anti-ageing, moisturising and sun protection factor (SPF) protection is poised to boost growth in global organic cosmetics market. Moreover, companies are constantly advertising organic cosmetics on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other websites such as Instagram, through beauty bloggers to increase brand awareness. All these factors are anticipated to boost adoption of organic cosmetics in developed and developing countries across the globe," said Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research.

Botox accounts for more than half of the global facial aesthetics market

Rising beauty consciousness among consumers and a shift in preference from invasive to minimally or non-invasive procedures are driving the demand for facial aesthetic procedures, according to the Global Facial Aesthetics Market 2016-2020 report by Technavio

Botox dominates the facial aesthetics market and accounts for approximately 52% of the total market share, says research firm Technavio, fuelled by a shift in cultural thinking, high spending capacity, and increased brand popularity. With an increasing number of women considering minimally invasive procedures as a viable option, demand for botox will continue through to 2020, Technavio says. Dermal fillers are the second-common non-invasive rejuvenation procedure.

“The facial aesthetics market is undergoing various technological advancements in terms of products and the materials used. Therefore, vendors have come up with advanced collagen-based materials such as bovine collagen and bioengineered human collagen, which reduces the risk of bruising. They are also launching products that can be used on the face, hands, and other parts of the body. For instance, Radiesse has recently received FDA approval for hand augmentation to correct volume loss in the dorsum of the hands. The increase in beauty consciousness among consumers has resulted in the surged adoption of facial aesthetic products, which in turn will accelerate the growth of this market during the forecast period,” says Brijesh Kumar Choubey, Lead Analyst, Consumer & Retail, Technavio Research.

Technavio further noted that India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia offer particularly lucrative market opportunities.

Beautycare to follow changing weather conditions

Mintel Beauty & Personal Care (BPC) has identified seasonality as a new global beauty trend. The concept refers to how specific weather conditions defines beauty regimens.

Source: Mintel website.

According to Mintel BPC, seasonal products accounted for as many as 11.1% of all beauty and personal care launches in 2014, up from 9.8% in 2011. Additionally, seasonal facial skincare launches rose from 0.5% of global launches in 2009 to 1.2% in 2014.

Jane Henderson, Global President of Mintel’s Beauty and Personal Care Division at Mintel, said, “Our research shows that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of – and concerned about – how changes in the environment are affecting the condition of their skin and hair. Already, beauty manufacturers have started to go beyond taking simple seasonal approaches geared to public holidays or gifting occasions and instead are taking on the elements within their product innovation.”

Highlighting a gap in the market, Mintel’s exclusive consumer research reveals the strong global consumer demand for skincare launches that tap into changing seasons. Almost half (48%) of Chinese female facial skincare users choose products from different brands in different seasons.

Vivienne Rudd, Director of Insight, Beauty and Personal Care at Mintel, said, “A new generation of winter care products offer additional care and hydration for the skin. These tend to target dry or very dry skin and mention cold, dry weather. However, the future will see the arrival of boosters that address cold, damp weather as well as the extremes of dryness. Meanwhile, extreme summer conditions are calling for products which protect the skin from heat and humidity as well as UV damage, and which build up resilience against the forthcoming autumnal changes. By creating these seasonal options, brands have a chance of building year-round loyalty.”

Seasonal haircare is coming to the fore, Mintel notes. “Today, we have a number of generic seasonal skincare and haircare launches, but in the future we expect a new generation of products targeting specific skin and hair issues. These product introductions have the opportunity to address concerns that have arisen due to climatic conditions and seasonal stresses, varying their textures, building up seasonal ingredient profiles and selecting appropriate fragrance blends,” Rudd said.

“Seasonal approaches in beauty also extend to ingredients harvested at the most opportune time, while seasonal boosters and complementary teas and tonics will join mainstream collections. The seasonal issue will have an impact on global launch programmes. With the seasons arriving in different geographic zones at different times, colour cosmetics brands will have to take a more time-sensitive approach to their seasonal colour stories, while skincare and haircare brands may have to stagger their launch programmes more accurately. Beauty brands will also take cues from localised seasons such as the Monsoon in Southeast Asia to launch relevant and eye catching products.”
