Premier League, StarHub unite to combat piracy in Singapore

With the Premier League 2024/25 season under way, the Premier League, in collaboration with its local broadcast partner StarHub, is continuing its action to educate consumers about the dangers of accessing pirated content and to combat illegal streaming in Singapore.

The League’s Boot Out Piracy campaign for this season brings together some of the biggest names in football — Alisson Becker (Liverpool FC), Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United), Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace), Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves), and Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) — to address the dangers of illegal streaming.

Through a series of videos distributed across digital platforms, these players speak directly to Singaporean fans, warning them of the significant risks associated with accessing Premier League content through unauthorised channels. This campaign follows a recent study by cybersecurity expert Professor Paul -Watters, which highlights the serious risks associated with illegal sports streaming - cybercriminals are exploiting illicit sports streaming sites, putting Singaporean consumers at risk of identity theft and fraud through browser hijacking, malware and misleading ads.

The August 2024 research examined 25 popular illicit sports streaming sites in Singapore, and found that almost two thirds (65.6%) of advertisements on these platforms are classified as “high-risk”, which significantly increases the likelihood of exposure to malware or fraudulent scams. The risk of encountering malicious activity on these platforms is 44%.

Premier League General Counsel Kevin Plumb said: “We know how passionate our fans are in Singapore and across Asia, staying up late to follow the latest Premier League action. We also know the risks and dangers of watching matches through illegal streams and want supporters to enjoy Premier League content in the best quality and safest way through authorised sources.

“As well as promoting important messaging, we are working harder than ever with Singapore’s law enforcement authorities and our partners at StarHub to enforce legal measures and take action against piracy. This includes collaborating with StarHub to identify and shut down piracy syndicates and working together with local authorities to address the distribution of illegal streaming devices.

“We encourage fans to protect their online safety and to enjoy Premier League matches via authorised platforms, which will provide the best viewing experience.”

Professor Watters remarked: “The research findings underscore the urgent need for online users to stay vigilant and avoid platforms that stream pirated content. Users may be under the impression that these sites are harmless, but cybercriminals are always planning to launch cyberattacks such as data breaches, ransomware and malware, putting users at significant risks. The Premier League’s Boot Out Piracy campaign helps make these risks clear to fans in Singapore.”

As the exclusive broadcaster of the Premier League in Singapore, StarHub has a pivotal role in the Boot Out Piracy campaign. “As the Home of Sports, StarHub is dedicated to providing fans with the best possible viewing experience. We firmly believe in the importance of protecting our content from piracy,” said Johan Buse, Chief of Consumer Business Group, StarHub.

“Piracy undermines our industry and threatens the future of sports content. By prioritising content protection, we ensure that fans can enjoy their favourite sport in a safe, secure environment. StarHub is proud to support Premier League's Boot Out Piracy campaign, and we are committed to fostering a vibrant sports community where every moment is valued and celebrated. Together, we urge fans to enjoy the game through legitimate channels, safeguarding the future of football for everyone."

The Premier League has been working closely with local law enforcement to crack down on illegal streaming services in Singapore. Most recently a man who sold illegal streaming devices at Sim Lim Square in Singapore was sentenced to 10 months’ jail, following investigation carried out in collaboration between the Premier League, the Singapore Attorney-General Chambers, and the Intellectual Property Rights Branch of the Singapore Police Force.

As part of its broader strategy to protect its content and safeguard the intellectual property rights of local broadcasters, the Premier League has been conducting site-blocking efforts aimed at identifying and blocking access to websites that stream football matches illegally. A total of over 560 domains in Singapore have been blocked by the Premier League. The Boot Out Piracy campaign will be showcased across broadcast channels and social media platforms in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in the upcoming months.

A TV campaign for Oppo has become No. 3 on YouTube's 10 most watched ads in 2018.

Prime Focus Technologies (PFT), the technology arm of Prime Focus, conceptualised and produced the ad, which presents childhood supporters of four of the best cricketers in the world, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and R. Ashwin.

The narrative depicts how real support makes real heroes and weaves in the Oppo F7 as a selfie expert.

Filming locations included Johannesburg, South Africa, as well as New Delhi and Pune in India.

Pranav Chaturvedi, Associate VP - Creative Services, PFT said, “Through this film, we have tried to recount stories of the unsung heroes who have been instrumental in shaping some of the nation’s most fantastic cricketers. For us, the biggest challenge lay in recreating scenes from 20 years ago with authenticity and accuracy. Keeping in mind each player’s hometown, we tried to give viewers a feel that is as close to reality as is cinematically possible."

Since its release on 29 March, 2018, the Oppo F7 video was aired on digital media as well as television, crossing landmark viewership figures in the first month. At the time of writing the video had 31.7 million views.

In addition to three matches being played at the National Stadium on 26, 28 and 30 July, fans can get in on the action at the House of Football pop-up at Clarke Quay, Singapore’s main nightlife and dining destination.

From 20 July to 29 July, members of the public can participate in various activities lined up at the House of Football, held in conjunction with the 2018 International Champions Cup.

Taking centrestage is the Panna – a one-on-one or two-on-two challenge to nutmeg your opponent before scoring a goal. Played in a decoganal cage, players should maintain as much possession of the ball as possible in all directions –forwards, backwards or sideways.

Other football-related activities open to public include playing foosball, themed nights hosted by La Liga and Paris Saint-Germain, and visiting and taking photos at Club Houses featuring club memorabilia by Arsenal, Atlético de Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Those who prefer to watch the action can look out for freestyle performances throughout the week by Urban Street Team. Food is available from Harry’s, McGettigan’s Irish Pub, and Red Tail Bar by Zouk.

Fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite players in the flesh may well get a chance to as the clubs make a stop at the House of Football during the week before match days.

Details:

Registration to play at Panna at the House of Football or take part in the Urban Street Team’s Panna Championships is available at online. Walk-ins for friendly play are also accepted subject to availability.

Tickets to the 2018 International Champions Cup in Singapore are currently available online and will also be available for purchase at the House of Football. Starting from S$28, group, family and multi-day packages with perks are also available. Games at the National Stadium begin at 7.30pm and last approximately two hours.

Multi-day packages include benefits such as preferred seating, a Fan Zone Special Entry Pass, House of Football Special Entry Pass and even a chance to win a pass to the clubs’ official training session at the National Stadium.

To bring fans closer to the action, organisers have released exclusive seating by the pitch for this year’s tournament. The S$388 field seat category – a first for both International Champions Cup in Singapore and the National Stadium – consists of 50 seats per match in a strategic location situated on the length of the pitch, right opposite the dugouts.

Fans travelling from China may get in touch with Thomas Cook China, the Official Travel Package Provider in Greater China of the 2018 International Champions Cup in Singapore.

Members with UnionPay, the Official Payment Brand of 2018 International Champions Cup in Singapore, will enjoy a 10% discount across all categories (except field seats) throughout the sale period.

Marketing an event without mentioning the event: challenge accepted

It's World Cup time again, and marketers are promoting all things football. The question is how they can do it without falling foul of FIFA's brand protection rules.

, November 2016.
The Guidelines for the use of FIFA's Official Marks, dated November 2016, include a whole list of terms which may not be used to promote the 2018 event. What is a marketer to do?

That's not to say marketers' hands are tied. In the Fair Play section of its pages on brand protection FIFA states: "As the organiser of the event, FIFA holds all commercial rights to the FIFA World Cup, its greatest commercial asset.

"However, FIFA recognises that football is a worldwide passion and of course FIFA is not opposed to businesses benefitting from the thriving economy surrounding the FIFA World Cup by using generic references to football. FIFA even encourages shop owners to join in with the celebration by decorating their shop windows and facades with generic football terms and objects."

Here are some examples of what some companies have done in their marketing campaigns about the 2018 World Cup. WorkSmart Asia presents the pictures 'as is' and does not comment on their legality. Some brands are perfectly entitled to use FIFA's official marks as they are official sponsors of the event:

What happened in the previous World Cup in 2014? A version of this blog post appeared in defunct sister blog WorkSmart SG in 2014:

When FIFA has public guidelines for the use of its marks, how do non-sponsors speak the World Cup language and touch their customers who are also fans?

among others, and there are still others which are not listed, says FIFA in the document.

Here are some ways companies have implemented World Cup campaigns in Singapore. A picture of a football helps, plus game-related language. Some brands have gone further with colours related to Brazil, or with football celebrities.

Actxa Spur simplifies training in your heartrate zone

Actxa has released the Spur, an all-day activity tracker with continuous heart rate monitoring and heart rate zone indication markers. A convenient alternative to the traditional chest strap, the Spur intends to make training in the different heart rate zones accessible to everyone, not just athletes.

Fitness enthusiasts and professional athletes have, for decades, used their heart rate to determine the ideal intensity levels for their training. The more intense your workout, the higher your heart rate is.

The Spur measures resting heart rate with a built-in sensor at the wrist, and helps calculate and track Warm Up, Fat Burning, Cardio, Intense and Maximum heart rate zones, buzzing when the wearer has entered or exited each zone.

"It's great that many of us are walking 10,000 steps daily, but it's important to do it at a moderate intensity to improve our cardiovascular health," explains Joel Chin, CEO. "We also need to make sure our sessions aren't too intense on recovery days. With the Spur, you get the guidance and monitoring you wish for, to plan your training schedule, so your body gets both the workout and rest it needs for better health."

In addition to monitoring your heart rate, the Spur also tracks step count, caloric expenditure, active duration time and distance travelled. Personal goals can be set and tracked with the Actxa App. The Spur also monitors the quality of a wearer's sleep.

"We want to make fitness attainable for everyone. A healthy lifestyle isn't just for the technologically adept or the elite athlete with their fancy equipment. It needs to be accessible for the regular person on the street," said Chin.

The S$99 Spur is available in June 2017, and retails for S$99 online from Actxa, and at authorised retail partners.

Funds raised from the 2.5km and 5km charity walkathon will go towards Project HomeWorks, a local initiative that aims to improve the living conditions of the elderly, the sick and people with disabilities living in poor conditions across the island. Since its inception in 2006, Project HomeWorks has benefitted over 1,600 vulnerable households with the help of more than 8,000 volunteers.

Over S$350,000 was raised from last year’s edition of Bare Your Sole, where more than 6,000 participants turned up to show their support. Organisers aim to raise S$400,000 this year. “Bare Your Sole has always served as an opportunity to shed light on the plight of the less fortunate in Singapore and for fellow Singaporeans to step up and lend a helping hand,” said Yong Teck Meng, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Singapore. “This year’s Bare Your Sole is particularly special for us as we celebrate 10 years of good work through Project HomeWorks. My sincere gratitude goes out to every participant, volunteer and corporate partner for your continuous support.”

Aside from the walkathon, Bare Your Sole 2016 will showcase the work of Habitat for Humanity Singapore, both locally and abroad.
