New collaborative platform aims to create business opportunities in the region

● Millet World Trading Post is a “co-working space+” concept that goes beyond physical co-working spaces and emphasises connectivity and collaboration

● The Millet World Trading Post platform dentifies opportunities and matches them with members in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China and India

● Two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) to be signed with Temasek Polytechnic* and Australian developer San Chuan

A new co-working space+, Millet World Trading Post (MWTP), has been rolled out to target small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), micro businesses, and operators in the arts, culture and creative industry in Asia.

Inspired by the trading posts of the past, the Trading Posts feature physical working spaces as well as a virtual network accessible through a mobile app for members across Asia. The Asia Pacific-wide online platform originating from Singapore connects the supply and demand dots by identifying opportunities and matching them with members across Southeast Asia, North and South Asia as well as Oceania. MWTP will also work on a membership subscription basis for access to a variety of spaces, ancillary facilities, events and activities.

“Beyond co-working spaces, MWTP’s greatest value-add is to be a business exchange platform for its members,” says Jimmy Soon, Executive Director of Millet Holdings, the parent company of MWTP. “We are confident that it is a scalable business model that will provide deal flows and create a virtuous cycle among small business owners, entrepreneurs and individuals. We hope to create 10,000 MWTP nodes in the region by 2020.”

Two MOUs were signed, with Temasek Polytechnic and with an Australian developer, San Chuan Australia. Soon said that Temasek Polytechnic will use MWTP to provide access to the region for current students and alumni members while San Chuan will give Millet Holdings "immediate access to the Australian market”.

Dr Sharon Lim, Chairman Designate of MWTP added: “As business networking is the main pillar of MWTP’s value proposition, MWTP will facilitate a pipeline of activities such as workshops, talks and conferences on the latest innovations and trends, serving as a business exchange centre and a modern 'Trading Post’. This pipeline of interactive activities will support Singapore small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to ‘grow in a pack’ and create collaborative paths into new markets.”

The Trading Post concept has helped Millet secure interest of businesses such as IQkidz, which runs educational programmes for children; Malaysian chocolate maker 18C, and Garam Lada, an Indonesian bakery which caters to special dietary needs.

"Today, these small businesses from the region see an advantage in leveraging on the MWTP network here to create a footprint in Singapore. Likewise, local firms are excited about the prospect of using the MWTP platform to cross venture into regional markets. This kind of massive connectivity of Trading Posts and ecosystem of regional cross-ventures excites us,” said Dr Lim.

There will be seven MWTP “nodes” or venues in Singapore initially: at Temasek Polytechnic, 20 Temenggong Road, The Pavilion at Far East Square, 10 Square@Orchard Central, Northpoint City I and II, and Platform E by SIM.  The spaces currently range from 31 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft in size.

MWTP nodes will soon roll out in key cities in the region as well, such as Manila, the Philippines; Kuala Lumpur and Malacca in Malaysia; Xiamen and Chengdu in China, as well as New Delhi, India. These will be followed by nodes in countries such as Australia, Laos and Vietnam in early 2019.

MWTP has found investors who are willing to turn their commercial spaces into Trading Posts. The earliest investor in MWTP’s business is Bobby Kok, MD, CJ Stamford Management. Kok will be driving the launch of MWTP in Manila.

Said Kok: “I was keen to invest in MWTP because I could see its potential to impact the lives of entrepreneurs and small business owners, and MWTP has the ability to scale up to serve the region as it gets more like-minded investors who want to make an impact with their investments.”

Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa is built on 10 acres – where old British military barracks and air raid shelters stood. These building complexes were constructed sometime between 1897 and 1905; and upgraded in the 1920s. The resort’s owner, Albert Teo, worked with Miyake Masaki, a celebrated Japanese architect, to convert these old buildings into resort suites while preserving as much heritage and nature as possible.

“It is an honour and privilege that our resort sits on this piece of valuable land. Not only are we part of the history, we are happy to be able to share this heritage with our guests. For the younger generation, they will have an opportunity to learn and appreciate how far Singapore has come,” said Dawn Teo, Senior VP, Amara Hotels & Resorts.

The Amara Heritage Trail is jointly organised by Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa and the Singapore Tourism Board and takes 60 minutes to complete on foot. Beginning at the resort’s main lobby, participants will be taken on a walk to explore heritage buildings. Along the way, guests will be asked to spot an artefact – a sole cleaner; relive the experience of hiding in a World War II air raid shelter; and identify some of the common herbs and spices used in local cuisine today, including the one that brought the British to Southeast Asia in the 1800s.

Other highlights include uncovering a heritage tree protected by the Singapore National Parks Board; sharing the story of Mrs Helen Hall; and learning the origins of the name “Sentosa” and some of the road names at Amara Sanctuary.

A specially curated colonial set menu, priced at S$38++ for two persons, has been created in conjunction with the launch of Amara Heritage Trail. Guests can taste common dishes enjoyed by British soldiers while Singapore was still a crown colony under the British administration.
Details:

The guided Heritage Trail will be opened to the public from 8 September 2018, and will occur every Saturday and Sunday at 10am. The one-hour guided tours will be priced at S$18 nett for the public; S$12 nett for in-house guests; and is complimentary for Amara Sanctuary Suite and Villa guests.

Singapore and Japan to facilitate collaboration and support growth of enterprises and startups

Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) and Enterprise Singapore have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) to bolster support for startups and businesses based in Japan and Singapore.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting 2018. Under the MoU, EDB, Enterprise Singapore and JETRO will facilitate access and opportunities through creating initiatives, events and information exchanges for startups and businesses, strengthening linkages between the Singapore and Japan innovation ecosystems.

Ted Tan, Enterprise Singapore’s Deputy CEO said, “Japan is a global leader in innovation, especially in areas such as manufacturing and engineering. Through this partnership, we will work with JETRO and their partners to enable Singapore startups to tap on Japan’s strong innovation ecosystem, and work together with high potential Japanese startups to jointly enter the ASEAN market through Singapore.”

The MOU also expands Singapore’s Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) initiative with Japan now as part of the network. A key recommendation in the Committee on the Future Economy 2016 report, the GIA was launched in 2017 to strengthen Singapore’s connection to leading innovation hubs and key markets around the world.

Beh Kian Teik, EDB’s Assistant MD and Chief Digital Officer said, “Having Japan join the GIA network builds on the existing economic partnership and bilateral relations. This partnership will provide valuable access and opportunities for Singapore and Japanese enterprises to connect, partner and cocreate solutions, thereby bolstering the startup and innovation ecosystems in both countries.”

Bose's noise-masking sleepbuds are designed to help us sleep better

Bose has launched noise-masking sleepbuds — wireless earbuds that combine an ultra-comfortable design with soothing sounds to block, cover, and replace the most common noises that interfere with sleep.

Source: Bose. Bose sleepbuds offer noise
masking, not noise cancellation.
Bose sleepbuds are the smallest Bose product ever made and come with 10 preloaded “sleeptracks” that mirror the frequencies of snoring, neighbors, dogs, traffic, and more — hiding them beneath a layer of relaxing audio. They feature new patented ear tips for a snug, barely-felt fit.

Bose also makes QuietComfort noise cancelling headphones, but says that noise-masking technology is different from active noise cancelling and do not stream music. “Noise-masking is a science,” said Daniel Lee, Systems Engineer for Bose sleepbuds. “It’s more than ambient sound or white noise. You can’t achieve it by simply turning up the volume on calming songs. And depending on the situation, it’s more effective than active noise cancelling — even ours.

"During the day, QuietComfort headphones improve focus and productivity, or let you hear your playlists and calls clearly in loud places. But at night, you’re trying to shut down completely, and the world is naturally more quiet — and when it’s quiet, even the slightest sound seems loud. Bedside machines can’t cover it, earplugs can’t block it, and earbuds meant for sitting, standing, or moving can’t be worn for hours laying down — especially on your side. But Bose sleepbuds can. And if you’re someone who’s tried everything and nothing’s worked, or haven’t tried anything believing nothing will, we made them for you.”

“Sleep deprivation is a growing, global epidemic that impacts our lives and our health,” said Brian Mulcahey, Category Director of Wellness at Bose. “It hits close to home for us, too. For years, our customers, coworkers, friends, and family members have asked us to make a product that helps them fall asleep and stay asleep.

"We took that seriously, and put together an incredible team of experts in noise management, acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronic miniaturisation, wireless in-ear headphones, and neurology. They represent some of the top talent in their fields, and their work inspired our entire company. Because behind the staggering statistics are real people, and this product can be a game changer for many of them.”

Bose sleepbuds come in a brushed aluminum charging case that provides up to 16 hours of battery life. Each bud weighs 1.4 g, and measures just over 1 cm wide and high. On their exterior is a laser-etched antenna for reliable connectivity to a phone or tablet. Inside, there is a rechargeable silver-zinc battery, a tiny transducer, and a microcircuit board with flash memory to store the preloaded noise-masking sound files. Both attach to a new noise-isolating StayHear+ Sleep tip — a physical barrier to unwanted sound. The soft, pliable StayHear+ Sleep tips are included in three sizes.

Bose sleepbuds use low-energy Bluetooth, are iOS and Android compatible, and come with the Bose Sleep app that makes it easy to update, control, and select preferences. Users can set an alarm for the morning, choose the sleeptrack and decide on the volume that works best for them.

Details:

Bose sleepbuds have a high-gloss white finish and will retail for S$379. They are available in Singapore from September 11 at authorised Bose dealers.

Acronis rolls out Acronis True Image 2019

- The new Acronis Survival Kit: An all-in-one universal recovery tool for your system

- The new active disk cloning for Mac: Migrate all your data from a Mac to another device

- Acronis Active Protection: AI fights off ransomware attacks

- Acronis Notary and ASign: Blockchain tech ensures data integrity with notarisation and e-signing

- Backup for Social networks: All profiles are now defended

Acronis, a global player in cyberprotection and hybrid cloud solutions, has released the 15-year anniversary edition of its personal backup software, Acronis True Image 2019. Acronis' artificial intelligence (AI)-based anti-ransomware technology – which is integrated into all of its backup solutions, including the new product – stopped more than 200,000 ransomware attacks on 150,000 customers last year. With current ransoms demanding an average of US$522 per attack, the defense has prevented at least US$104 million in damage.

Acronis says Acronis True Image 2019 is the only home solution that allows users to make full image backups to both local and cloud storage, or lets users clone an active system disk on either a Windows or Mac machine – capabilities that strengthen the user’s control over their data protection and management.

Acronis President John Zanni notes, “How people use data is constantly changing, as are the threats to that data. To create the kind of modern protection users need, our approach is to deliver total cyberprotection, blending proven backup with effective security features. The Anniversary Edition of Acronis True Image continues that long-standing commitment.”

In an August survey done by users on websites in the Google Surveys Publisher Network, Acronis discovered that Singapore users believe human error causes the most data loss, but are generally not willing to pay to recover lost files.

Nearly 29% said data loss had been mostly caused by human error, while another 28% attributed losses mostly to hardware failure.

Slightly under one-third (32.5%) had heard of ransomware, but the majority (65.4%) said they would not pay to get their files back, whether the files were lost because of ransomware or data loss. A further 21% said they would not pay more than US$50, though 1.9% of respondents said they were willing to cough up more than US$500.

Survey findings included:

- More than half (53.9%) of respondents do not back up their computers

- Four in 10 (42.9%) had lost important files and photos from their computer or mobile device
Easy backup

By adding the ability to create an all-in-one recovery tool on an external hard drive, Acronis True Image 2019 makes restoring a system as easy as plugging in the external drive. Called the Acronis Survival Kit, it is meant to be as comprehensive and flexible in emergencies as a Swiss army knife – containing everything a user needs to restore a system from boot media to the system partition and all of their backups.

Creating backups is also easier with new event-based scheduling options, such as automatically backing up when an external USB drive is attached. For a personal backup solution that already offers tremendous customization, the new trigger-based options provide even more flexibility to users.

While Acronis True Image is known for its ability to let users recover their system to the same or dissimilar hardware, improved WinPE media makes the power of Universal Restore even greater. The new WinPE builder streamlines media creation by detecting network adapters and configuring network settings so a user can recover their system through an Ethernet connection as well as a Wi-Fi network. WinPE stands for Windows Preinstallation Environment, a version of Windows used for troubleshooting and installation.

Efficient operations

Not everyone wants things to be automated, and the new Backup Cleanup utility builds on that desire for data control. It allows users to free up disk space by manually selecting unnecessary versions of backups and deleting unneeded files – so they can keep what they need.

Some of the enhancements in the 2019 release relate to improving performance. A new file-to-cloud format, for example, increases the reliability and performance of cloud backups for both Windows and Mac, and the user interface is now more intuitive.

Secure data and devices

Acronis True Image 2019 features an improved version of the Acronis ransomware defense. In addition to protecting the data, files and systems on the local PC or Mac, the updated Acronis Active Protection technology now protects data on network shares and NAS, addressing the increased reliance of these devices in home networks.

Acronis technology is deployed by users of all types, including the Arsenal Football Club and Williams Martini Formula 1 Racing.

Work in more co-working spaces through workbuddy

Singapore startup workbuddy has launched, along with its app of the same name – an ‘office in your pocket’ solution.

The workbuddy app is designed to provide access to co-working spaces in Singapore.

Gaurav Joshi, co-founder, workbuddy said, “With the rise of digital technology and the shared economy, the way people work has changed drastically. We don’t need to be in an office or at our desk to be productive anymore. Co-working spaces have grown from just a handful to over a 200 in just a few years, but the limitations are that members still have to commute and commit to year-long contracts.”

He added, “We wanted to provide Singapore’s professionals with a new level of freedom, enabling them to access workspaces all over the city, anytime they need to.”

The workbuddy app provides users with easy access to multiple co-working spaces across Singapore. As of launch on 20 August, the app boasts a network of over 20 co-working spaces across Singapore and is available on Android and iOS

The company expects its user base to grow quickly over the next few months, with strong interest being received ahead of launch. Users currently range from freelancers to startups and multinational enterprises. An ideal customer would have a mobile workstyle or employees who work at multiple locations in the country.

Users pay a subscription fee of either S$129 for a five-day or S$299 for an unlimited monthly pass. Beyond gaining access to co-working spaces, users will also have access to business networks and events hosted by different co-working space providers.

Toby Rakison, Regional Director Southeast Asia at global furniture company Steelcase said, “We have been at the forefront of agile and flexible workspace for some time now. Our team has recently taken up multiple subscriptions with workbuddy to allow our teams to be closer to our clients and give them the flexibility to be able to work wherever they are. The subscriptions have also provided us with enhanced control over our physical assets and has given our teams access to more flexible work arrangements.”

Details:

As of launch, workbuddy offers users a choice of over 20 locations, with a further 10 locations soon to be added. Users can book desk space at locations such as:

MOX @ Katong at Joo Chiat Road

CoQoons at Harbourfront Place

The Metropolis T2 at North Buona Vista

JustCo @ Marina One

Distrii @ Republic plaza

Joshi added, “In today’s day and age, work is no longer something that we go to, but something we do. As both the sharing and gig economy catch on in Singapore, new age workers and firms will require enhanced flexibility to improve productivity, reduce costs and remain nimble in a fast-paced business environment. Recent studies indicate that at any time organisations are not utilizing 25 to 30% of their office space, reducing that can give companies  significant cost savings.

Under this agreement, Aditus Pay will be the official cryptocurrency payment solution for Eurosports Global. Crypto-users will be able to use Bitcoin and Ethereum to purchase Lamborghinis through the Aditus Pay platform. Crypto-users will also enjoy loyalty rewards in the form of Aditus tokens (ADI), which can be used for purchases with merchants on the Aditus platform, as a discount token to reduce processing fees on future transactions, or staked to qualify for the Aditus VIP members programme.

The Lamborghini Urus was recently unveiled in Singapore in conjunction with Aditus.

The Urus is powered by a 4 l twin-turbo V8 engine outputting 650 hp and 850 Nm of torque. Dubbed the World’s First Super SUV, it does the century sprint (editor's note: going from zero to 100 kmh) in 3.5 seconds and assimilates design cues from the Miura and Aventador.

Besides Lamborghini, Eurosports Global’s stable also includes Pagani, Alfa Romeo, Touring Superlegerra as well as luxury watch brand deLaCour.

“Lamborghini evokes passion, innovation and exclusivity. It is with great honour that Eurosports Global, one of the most trusted supercar distributors in Singapore has put their trust in Aditus to access the crypto-affluent market,” says Julian Peh, CEO of Aditus.

“Aditus is a pioneer in crypto-adoption, and this partnership between Eurosports Global and Aditus is a first step for crypto-affluents to acquire the latest offerings from top end brands easily and seamlessly, using Aditus Pay as the cryptocurrency payment solution.”

As part of continuing expansion plans, Aditus will be extending access to private launch events and viewings for members of the Aditus VIP membership programme.
