AppeDine launches beta F&B and lifestyle e-commerce marketplace in Singapore

Source: AppeDine. Screenshot of the AppeDine app for consumers.

AppeDine has announced the public beta release of a food and beverage (F&B) and lifestyle e-commerce marketplace in Singapore, supporting online transactions customised for F&B and lifestyle service providers, chefs and consumers.

Aggregating F&B outlets, pop-up events and special promotions on one platform, AppeDine lets F&B and lifestyle service providers monetise their culinary services and venue spaces online, without incurring any capital outlay. Chefs who sign up for the app are automatically notified of requests by service providers or consumers in real time, and given a fair opportunity to bid for each on-demand job opportunity.

F&B and lifestyle service providers can manage online listings, transactional sales, bookings and loyalty programmes on their own. They can easily showcase their menus, sell tickets online, track ticket sales and redemption real time, through the AppeDine Partner mobile app or web site.

With the support of the AppeDine platform, F&B and lifestyle service providers are equipped to be more agile in their offerings. For example, a café located in the central business district with a good lunch crowd but few walk-ins in the afternoon and evenings, can list the space for venue rental with a curated price plan and offer it as an off-site business meeting venue during off-peak hours, or transform into a lifestyle service provider at night, hosting pop up events through tickets sold on AppeDine.

The AppeDine platform takes into consideration the long working hours and the need for liquidity in the F&B and lifestyle business. Service providers will appreciate the instant online payment for each transaction and no capital outlay. Transactional sales tracking online reduces the time spent on administrative paperwork.

“AppeDine is the go-to digital business manager for F&B and lifestyle service providers,” said Clara Lim, founder and CEO of AppeDine. “With AppeDine Partner App, it is where pertinent elements like the e-commerce payment gateway, integration with social media marketing, and a ticketing system with real-time sales tracking, converge into a single, comprehensive platform to serve the community of consumers, chefs and service providers. There are no sign up fees or subscription fees required by partners when they list content online on the AppeDine platform – it is free. Partners can leverage on AppeDine and list as much content as they desire.”

Through AppeDine, diners can book popup events online instantly, secure unique venues for group events with online deposit payment, and enjoy ancillary benefits such as loyalty rewards and competitive pricing on F&B vouchers.

Diners looking to host private dining parties can either hire an established private chef from the Book-a-Chef feature, or take it up a notch by customising a unique menu according to their budget in the Chef-on-Demand feature.

“AppeDine is the one-stop digital marketplace for customers. With multiple channels of F&B and lifestyle services available at AppeDine app for consumers, we are confident that consumers from all walks of life can discover options within their budget to fit their needs whilst satisfying their cravings for any occasion,” said Lim.

US releases Special 301 Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets for 2016

United States Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman has announced the findings of the Special 301 Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets for 2016, which highlights specific physical and online markets around the world that are reported to be engaging in and facilitating substantial copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting.

“This Notorious Markets List illustrates the seriousness of copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting in online marketplaces,” said Froman. “The 2016 List underscores the need for accountable governments everywhere to take on these forms of piracy and counterfeiting at every stage of the global supply chain to prevent final products that put health and safety of end-consumers at risk.”

Every year, the list includes online and physical markets in which pirated or counterfeit products and services are reportedly available, but does not constitute a legal finding of a violation or an analysis of the general intellectual property rights (IPR) protection and enforcement environment in any affiliated country or economy.

The list keeps track takes stock of emerging infringement models and adds stream-ripping sites and piracy apps to the list of the most damaging digital marketplaces. Stream ripping is the unauthorised conversion of content from a licensed streaming site into an unauthorised copy for distribution via download to the requester. Nearly 30% of Internet users obtain copies of music from stream ripping services, the report said, also noting that in 2015, digital music revenues surpassed physical sales for the first time, and streaming revenues—which grew more than 45%—were a major driver behind overall global growth. The trend has led to Youtube-MP3 being added to the Notorious Market List this year as an example of one of the "reportedly more popular stream ripping sites". Elsewhere, the report says that Streaming sites like Putlocker are "overtaking torrent and other piracy sites as the primary mode of movie and television piracy".

In addition, counterfeiters continue to take advantage of the popularity of online shopping to distribute counterfeit goods via small parcels which now comprise the most popular method of shipping counterfeit goods worldwide, the report stated.

The US encourages all responsible authorities to intensify efforts to combat piracy and counterfeiting, and to use the information contained in the Notorious Markets List to pursue legal action where appropriate.

The following digital marketplaces were either based in Asia Pacific and the Middle East or are popular with users from these regions:

Beevideo.tv
BeeVideo is an application allegedly developed in China that facilitates the viewing of allegedly infringing movies and television shows on smart TVs through set-top boxes, and on mobile devices. The app is available through the BeeVideo.tv website portal. BeeVideo has been downloaded more than 12 million times.

ExtraTorrent
ExtraTorrent from the Ukraine has Alexa rankings in India, Pakistan, and China of 170, 19, and 319 respectively, which reflect its popularity in these countries. ExtraTorrent has also been identified as a source of malware.

Gongchang.com
The GongChang platform specializes in industrial products and servicing manufacturers and retailers. GongChang is reportedly one of several online markets in China that are well-known for the sale of counterfeits, including counterfeit security tags that retailers affix to products as part of a shoplifting prevention system.

The problem with counterfeit security tags is that they may mislead customers into thinking that the goods they buy are actually authentic, or that the goods are protected when they can be easily shoplifted. "The sale of these counterfeits at the B2B level illustrates how significant quantities of counterfeit inputs can enter global supply chains," the report notes.

MP3va.com
This site is one of several based in Russia and Ukraine that is popular in India. It looks like a legal music download site, claims to be legal, but sells tracks for much less than the market rate.

Muaban.net
Muaban is a Vietnamese e-commerce platform that sells legitimate goods, but which stakeholders have also identified as offering counterfeit clothing and footwear. It has over 3 million page views each month.

MyEgy.to

MyEgy is one of the largest marketplaces for infringing video game and other copyrighted content in the Middle East. Stakeholders report that hundreds of new links to infringing video game files are posted to the site daily, and that the operator "is unresponsive to takedown requests". The MyEgy site, hosted in Russia and created by a web developer in Egypt, is in Arabic, offering content in both Arabic and English.

Nanjing Imperiosus Technology Company
Nanjing Imperiosus, based in China, is reported to disproportionately provide services to illegal online pharmacies.

Putlocker
Putlocker is one of the most-visited video streaming sites in the Asia-Pacific region for allegedly pirated movies and television shows. The operator of Putlocker is believed to be based in Vietnam and appears to be taking actions to evade enforcement measures.

Taobao
The Taobao.com e-commerce platform, one of the 15 most popular websites globally and among the top five websites in China, has a large volume of allegedly counterfeit and pirated goods available and has proved challenging when right holders try to remove and prevent illicit sales and offers of such goods.

The report details what Alibaba Group, the owner of Taobao, has done to clamp down on piracy, including the introduction of the Good Faith Program for IPR enforcement, but also said: "There is a reported significant disparity between the timeliness and effectiveness of Alibaba’s responses to complaints submitted by right holders in the Good Faith Program and those outside the programme. While recent steps set positive expectations for the future, current levels of reported counterfeiting and piracy are unacceptably high".

In response Michael Evans, President of the Alibaba Group said: "We are very disappointed by the USTR’s decision to include Taobao on its 'notorious markets' list, as we are far more effective and advanced in IPR protection than when the USTR took us off the list four years ago. The decision ignores the real work Alibaba has done to protect IP rights holders and assist law enforcement to bring counterfeiters to justice. The more than 100,000 brands that operate on Alibaba’s marketplaces cannot all be wrong – they are a clear demonstration of the trust that rights holders place in us. We question whether the USTR acted based on the actual facts or was influenced by the current political climate."

The Pirate Bay
The Pirate Bay is one of the longest-running and most vocal torrent sites for admittedly illegal downloads of movies, television, music, and other copyrighted content. It is currently hosted out of Vietnam to avoid enforcement.

Youtube-MP3.org
Stream ripping site Youtube-mp3 enjoyed 4.8 billion visits in the past year, and a country-specific Alexa ratings of 111 in Turkey. The site, which allegedly accounts for about 40% of the world’s stream ripping activity, is currently facing legal action.

Physical markets that carry counterfeit goods include:

China
Baiyun Leather Goods Market in Guangzhou, as well as shops in the Jin Long Pan Foreign Trade Garment Market in the same city; Chenghai District in Guangdong Province, reportedly a counterfeiting zone, as well as Wu Ai Market in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. In Beijing, counterfeit hotspots listed in the report include the Cheng Huan Cheng International Auto Parts Market, and the Silk Market.

Southeast Asia
Harco Glodok and Mangga Dua, two popular markets in Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as Ninh Hiep in Hanoi, Vietnam have been identified as alleged marketplaces which sell fake goods. MBK Center in Bangkok, Thailand and Rong Kluea near the border with Cambodia, appear to be the largest wholesale and retail market for counterfeit goods in Thailand, the report said.

India
Gandhi Nagar in Delhi is highlighted for counterfeit apparel while Burma Bazaar in Chennai is highlighted for a wide variety of counterfeit goods and pirated media discs. Kashmere Gate, also in Delhi, is an example of a market allegedly selling counterfeit auto parts.

Aladdin Street aims to be a top e-marketplace globally

Source: Aladdin Group. Aladdin himself.
Source: Aladdin Group. Aladdin himself.
Aladdinstreet.com.sg, the world’s first premium-quality products and halal* e-marketplace, has been formally launched. Serving the B2B and B2C communities, the portal offers halal-certified products as well as premium-quality products that do not require halal certification.

Three months since its July 2016 announcement, Aladdinstreet.com.sg has shortlisted 200 merchants for its site and finalised agreements with close to 60 merchants. About half of these offer halal-friendly or halal-certified products. Owned by Muslims and non-Muslims, the businesses provide food, beverages, vitamins, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion and other products or services.

Co-founder of the Aladdin Group Dato’** Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie does not see AladdinStreet.com.sg competing against existing marketplaces, instead creating a completely new marketplace that is a milestone for trust in halal goods and services. "When I bought things online I realised I wasn't sure of the quality," he explained. "I worried if they were (genuine)."

“There has been a growing acceptance of the health benefits for halal products even in non-Muslim countries,” says Dr Al Masrie. “But manufacturers and producers of the halal industry can only meet 20% of this demand because there is a lack of reliable marketing platforms. In fact one of the biggest importers of halal products is actually Singapore, and given the country’s good track record in governance and high standards of halal compliance, Aladdinstreet.com.sg will help these SMEs access this market to its fullest potential.”

On the future of Aladdinstreet.com.sg, former senior Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, Zainul Abidin Rasheed, is optimistic that the e-commerce site will create new brand purpose, values and new avenues for growth, especially now that Singapore is experiencing an economic slowdown.

"Singapore is well-known for its branding as a business and financial centre, both in terms of its integrity and quality standards, and this applies to its halal standards too," says Zainul, who is currently the non-resident Ambassador to Kuwait and the Foreign Minister's Special Envoy to the Middle East.

Imran Musa, Advisor, Aladdin Group and CEO of ARK, a halal competency developer specialist, noted that the halal opportunity is worth an estimated US$3 trillion by 2019. "Halal is not just religious per se, (it is about) how you process the food, the cosmetics, what kind of allergens are in there, these are things that need to be properly examined. It is a guarantee of a good product," he said. "There are 1.8 billion consumers. More than 600 million of them are IT savvy, they shop online, they do a lot of things online. For Hari Raya, more than 50% of consumers shopped online; that is something that is the way forward for all of us. Singapore is an e-commerce and finance hub. That is why we started with (Singapore)."

Singapore Co-founder & President, Dato’ Dr Grace Kong added that Aladdinstreet.com.sg is not just for Muslims because halal is about making healthier choices for everyone including non-Muslims, and everyone has become more socially conscious of their consumption patterns. Dato’ Kong explains, “They want to know what they eat, wear, what they apply on their face, where it comes from and how the animals were treated. It’s about cruelty free, ethical and sustainable consumption too.”

AladdinStreet Singapore is also focused on educating the public that halal does not only refer to food. Halal cosmetics, health and pharmaceuticals are growing markets, and cosmetic giants from Europe and Korea are already manufacturing halal cosmetics for Muslim markets, the Aladdin Group notes.

"Singapore is one amongst 15 countries which have a Muslim population with the highest purchasing power, as revealed by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The nation has been named the friendliest non-Islamic destination for Muslim travellers for 2012-2014, according to the Global Muslim Travel Index. Countries like China and Japan look to Singapore as a benchmark for a successful halal industry without disrupting social and economic culture. So, Singapore is indeed fortunate to have such capabilities and favourable factors. But doing business in Singapore has never been about simply its local market. Plugging into Singapore's business network and infrastructure typically serves as a powerful launch-pad and gateway to the regional and global market," added Ambassador Zainul.

Various companies have partnered with AladdinStreet Singapore to extend their reach beyond Singapore and hope to increase sales by 40% in the next 12 months. One of AladdinStreet Singapore’s merchants is Singapore-listed Food Empire, a company since 2000, which has been manufacturing halal-certified instant beverages, frozen food and snacks to Muslim majority markets such as Malaysia, Central Asia and the Middle East. All four of its factories in Malaysia are halal certified. Its partnership with AladdinStreet Singapore aims to further expand its halal business into Southeast Asia.

Artistic-Arrivo offers the Atelo Collagen Jelly Mask on AladdinStreet. The halal-certified product has ingredients that penetrate cells to encourage collagen generation, smooth skin and reduce acne, the company said.

Ice's Secret's Pure Radiance Mask has skin brightening properties. It can be used for the eyes and anywhere the skin is duller, and is suitable as foundation. Apply overnight and wash off in the morning. 100% herbal.

ZAC Meat has been supplying halal meats to restaurants and hotels from day one, and recently expanded to supermarket shelves - and AladdinStreet, says ZAC Business Development Manager Selvam S. ZAC's portfolio includes sausages, cold cuts, ready-to-eat products as well as cheeses, dips, and spices.

Alcurea is distributing the Grayns rice cooker, which strains out the sugar content of rice, reducing its glycaemic load, as part of the cooking process. Zahid Masauood, MD, Alcurea, said that the distributor had been invited to join AladdinStreet as Dr Al Masrie had started off using Grayns and liked it.

Note Cosmetics was established in 2015 after they noticed a lack of halal cosmetics retailers in the market. The company has since seen an increase in sales from non-Muslim customers, who have grown to appreciate their products because they do not contain ingredients derived from animals.

Nadia Nadzirah of Budinadia poses with her creations. She is modelling one of her limited edition shawls, which has a subtle Western-style print.

Budinadia marries modern and vintage fashion to create limited edition clothing. Founder and MD Nadia Nadzirah has abayas, jubahs with kain songket embellishments, as well as shawls which make use of high quality fabric with Western-style prints. Her collection also includes kurta-style tops for men. Asked why she chose to go with Aladdinstreet Nadia said being part of a community of merchants gives her opportunities to learn that would not have been possible going it alone. Tudung Ku Collection was set up in 2012 to address the modern Muslim woman who want easy-to-wear scarves but with a touch of luxury. It has seen a 20% increase in sales over the last four years.

Dream Sparkle offers green cleaning services using steam cleaning, which deep-cleans and sanitises surfaces at homes and offices. Stains can be removed easily from carpets, as the company showed in a demonstration. The water used is drink-quality, the company said.

Sports hijabs from Juz Demure.
Juz Demure is selling dri-fit sports hijab after the company saw more Muslim women wanting to pursue an active lifestyle without compromising on modesty. The hijab is designed to fit snugly and securely even with a wide range of movement, and under conditions such as under a motorcycle helmet.

The Camellia dri fit hijab, at an introductory price of S$38, also has reflective lines and a logo at the back for safety during night runs. The company has seen an increase in sales of 20% since it started operations in 2015.

“Finally, a trusted and a convenient one-stop e-commerce site for halal and quality products for me and my family, “ says Singapore football legend Fandi Ahmad. Fandi will be launching his biography on the site in the future.

In terms of its pricing strategy, Aladdinstreet.com.sg does not plan to indulge in discounts and flash sales often seen with e-commerce sites because its priority is quality and integrity, values driven by its business integrity checks and stringent halal compliance requirements. It is also rolling out a halal educational programme for merchants to help them better understand the halal compliance requirements.

Aladdin expects to be a top 10 e-marketplace globally, hosting over 100,000 merchants and more than 3 million unique products in three years. "Our vision is to become No. 1 in halal e-commerce. The market is huge. We are focusing on quality control, what is premium. We are hoping that in a short time we will be as big as Alibaba," said Dr Al Masrie.

"The key difference that sets Aladdinstreet.com.sg apart from other e-commerce platforms is that our merchants and customers will enjoy support and assistance from Aladdinstreet’s network offices located in 30 countries in phase one and another 20 more in phase two - covering a combined total population of approximately 5 billion consumers," said Dato' Kong.

AladdinStreet Singapore is one of 29 countries that the Group has since entered into joint ventures, including India, Indonesia, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Iran and the US. The next announcement to come will be on AladdinStreet China, the Aladdin Group executives said. Today, there are more than 20 million Muslims in China where the domestic demand for halal by non-Muslims is also increasing given the recent food scares there.

The Aladdin Group is also on the verge of confirming an exclusive and first-ever brand partnership with one of the world's biggest football clubs, which will give consumers and merchants access to 650 million fans in over 200 territories, allow for faster access into China and helping to meet AladdinStreet Singapore’s target of S$50 million in sales within the first year of its launch.

Dato' Sri Desmond To, Co-Founder and President, Aladdin Group, disclosed that the company is also negotiating its own Islamic payment gateways in various countries. The gateways will work like AliPay. In Malaysia, the group is working with Maybank, while in Singapore the partnering bank is UOB.

Booqed lists workspaces for hire

Online marketplace Booqed has launched its meeting room and workspace search, booking and transaction phone app of the same name on the Apple App Store. Providing a faster way for anyone to leverage an available meeting or working area in a city, the app allows users to locate available areas, place an immediate or forward reservation, then pay for the usage of the space from a smartphone or tablet.

The service also benefits businesses with meeting or conference rooms that can sit vacant through the day. Booqed allows such companies to monetise the facilities instead.

Personalisation is key to e-commerce success

Online revenues boil down to knowing what the customer wants and personalising the experience for him or her accordingly, says online fashion marketplace Zalora, which was at the 2014 Influential Brands: Celebrating brand leadership and Asia brand heroes conference to speak about reaching out to different audiences for digital business.

Founded in 2012, Zalora carries 20,000 products, more than 500 brands and supports multiple touch-points for sales. “We make it as convenient as possible,”
Zalora Marketing Director Dione Song said, pointing out that Zalora purchases can be collected at 7-Eleven convenience stories, SingPost's POPStations, or through cash-oh-delivery arrangements.

The company recently invested in a pop-up store at the popular Ion Orchard mall to bring the products to those who are still uncertain about buying online. “Our vision was to bring e-commerce to the offline space. We allow you to get over the barrier of online shopping, show you the product, allow you to try it, but you can’t buy it,”
Song explained. The experience can help people to get used to the idea of ordering online and getting their purchases delivered in one or two days instead of the inconvenience of carrying the purchases around, she said.

Song added that Zalora does not segment its customers into ‘Gen X’ or ‘Gen Y’ as the company believes customers are not homogeneous in age segments. “It doesn’t mean that if you’re in an age class that you all act the same way. Customers are very discerning. They know what quality is, they know what they want to pay. We target customers as individuals,” she said.

The experience goes all the way down to personalised web browsing experiences and newsletters, she said. Customers who have browsed one brand are shown complementary brands that are similar. New customers may receive an added incentive to buy, while repeat customers are introduced to in-house labels which they might not have been open to as new customers.

‘Sharks’, people who hunt for discounts, are given bundled deals, whereas those who are more likely to spend more are shown designer brands. “If a customer has looked at shoe pages 10 times, we show you shoes. Everyone has a personal experience. They see a different page but they do not know it,” she said.

Newsletters from Zalora.

Zalora even knows how many times its e-newsletters are read per month, and may change the email subject titles or push special promotions to inactive customers.

"Understanding of a consumer through a behavioural analytical study is important for businesses, not only for the digital businesses. The brand’s strategies should be mapped against the consumer purchase journey which covers multi platforms from which consumers are most likely to be reached when they are commuting to how they purchase, where and why,” said Song.

MotionElements adds visual search technology to

MotionElements, a Singapore-based online marketplace for royalty-free* stock animation, video footage, After Effects and Apple Motion templates, has launched an improved search engine featuring visual similarity search technology in partnership with Pixolution, a visual image search technology provider, to help stock media buyers find relevant content more easily.

Speaking of Pixolution, Joanne Chua, Co-Founder of MotionElements said, “We saw a lot of potential in the amount of utility and ease of use it provides to both buyers and sellers of stock video content, which led to our decision to invest and implement the technology to MotionElements as part of our efforts to improve our site.”

The VisualSearch feature complements existing text searches through helping to locate video content through using visual cues. Text-based searches are limited by how well video content has been described with keywords, whereas VisualSearch is able to recognise the images themselves, providing users with more accurate search results for video content libraries.

The challenge is compounded when users search in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, all of which are supported by the site. Keywords are often only in a single language, and while they are translated, may not fully capture the semantics in different languages. “What sets us apart is that, on top of our extensive video footage library, we also have a huge selection of stock animation and After Effects templates. This often places a heavy burden on having the correct keywords to describe, for example, animated video backgrounds with keywords like 'Swirly Lines' or 'Curvy Wave',” Mark Sun, Co-Founder of MotionElements elaborated.

"The visual nature of the search overcomes the various language and semantic limitations inherent to keyword searches. This effectively globalises search for all languages, which in turn gives our Artists** confidence that their content can be found by buyers with less emphasis on the keywords”.

The company further clarified that text-based searches for content to fit subjective criteria like mood can be unsuccessful as it is impossible to guess if the keyword combination used to search with matches the keywords provided for relevant content. VisualSearch can use a reference image to come up with a list of all content that has similar images, for example.

MotionElements says users should be able to locate content in fewer steps compared to a standard keyword search. VisualSearch in MotionElements is currently a beta*** feature. More improvements are expected to be implemented as more users become familiar with the new search feature.

The company receives about 10,000 pageviews a day, with more than half of the traffic coming from Asia, MotionElements said.

*Royalty-free content may be free or may require payment. If it is royalty-free, royalties do not have to be paid thereafter.
