Tried and tested services management strategies backed by cutting-edge academic research are now available in Winning in Service Markets, a book by Professor Jochen Wirtz, National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School’s Vice Dean (Graduate Studies) and Professor of Marketing.

Professor Wirtz  has adapted his globally leading textbook – Services Marketing: People, Technology, Strategy (8th edition) for industry practitioners. Targeted towards service organisations, the new publication provides comprehensive coverage of the latest academic research and its implications for best-practice service management and marketing across multiple services sector industries.

The secret to winning in service markets is summarised into a five-part framework for readers. With the whole service-profit chain in mind, organisations can cultivate a shared service climate, culture and leadership by:

1. Understanding the power of design and packages of “intangible” benefits and products for employees;

2. Investing in high quality service operations and customer information management processes;

3. Grooming a pool of motivated and competent frontline employees;

4. Building and maintaining a loyal and profitable customer base; and

5. Developing and implementing a coherent service strategy to transform assets into improved business performance.

“Consumers today are more knowledgeable and sophisticated than ever before. Service organisations need to keep up by creating memorable customer service experiences in order to build brand loyalty,” says Professor Wirtz. “Through this book, I hope to help transform the service sector into one that creates value for both customers and employees whilst balancing profitability and growth.”

Jan Swartz, President, Princess Cruises, called the publication a “highly practical book” that is recommended for everyone working in a service organisation. She said, “I love the comprehensive coverage of services marketing and rigour. Also, it is easy to read and full of interesting, best practice examples.”

Professor Wirtz is recognised globally for his excellence in teaching and research with over 40 awards. He holds a Ph.D. in services marketing from the London Business School and his research has been published in some 100 academic journal articles and 130 conference presentations. He has published over 10 books and is an active management consultant in the areas of strategy, business development and customer feedback systems.

Dell EMC is one of Singapore's Best Companies to Work For in 2016

Dell EMC Singapore is ranked No. 8 on the Singapore 2016 Best Companies to Work For, a list derived from one of the world’s most comprehensive studies of workplace culture conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute Singapore.

The study measures the behaviours and the environment that forms the underpinning of world’s most desirable workplaces and successful businesses through 58 specific metrics embedded in an employee survey, as well as in an audit of company culture and people practices. Companies cannot be included in the list unless a clear majority of their employees considers their organisation to be a great workplace.

Earlier this year, Dell EMC was ranked No. 4 multinational best workplace in Asia Pacific and Japan, KSA and the UAE as part of the Best Workplaces in Asia 2016 list by Great Place To Work, making the organisation part of an elite list of 60 companies from 900 that were evaluated in nine countries across Asia.

“Dell EMC is a company with a diverse team of people working towards a common vision – a confluence of talent, values and inspiration. This is an organisation where the voices of the team define the work experience,” said Great Place to Work Institute Singapore. “The 'You Define' campaign is a ground-driven initiative that seeks to create a sense of connection and purpose for team members, celebrating each individual’s contribution to the business. It also creates opportunities for team members to participate in projects important to them, such as CSR and sustainability efforts.

“Authenticity, vibrancy, openness and the employee – these are the values that bind the Dell EMC team together. Dell EMC has the winning formula to be a Best Company to Work For!”

Eric Goh, MD, Dell EMC Singapore – Enterprise Business said, “At Dell EMC we believe that building a positive, inclusive and productive workplace is a continuous journey, in which our employees play a critical role. I’d like to thank all of our employees for their trust and continued contribution to the business.”

Globally, EMC was ranked No. 4 in the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces category, moving up two places from its position of No. 6 in 2015. The World's Best Multinational Workplaces are chosen from a pool of 1,000 multinational subsidiaries that have appeared on at least five national Best Workplaces lists.

If you need to entertain at the best, you can't go wrong with the top 10 restaurants in Asia, as listed by Asia's Best 50 restaurants for 2014

The catch? You have a better chance of trying the food if you are in Thailand, Japan, China or Singapore. The top 10 list includes two from Bangkok, two from Tokyo, three from Hong Kong, and two from Singapore:

1. Nahm, Bangkok, Thailand, recommended for guinea fowl curry with shampoo ginger and holy basil. It was ranked no. 3 in 2013.

2. Narisawa, Tokyo, Japan, where you should try the "inori". Narisawa was no. 1 in 2013.

3. Indian food at Gaggan, Bangkok, Thailand, to try the papdi chaat 2050. Gaggan was all the way in no. 10 last year.

4. Hong Kong's Amber restaurant at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and be sure to order the Hokkaido sea urchin in lobster jelly, with cauliflower, caviar and crispy seaweed waffle. Amber was also no. 4 in 2013.

5. Nihonryori Ryugin in Tokyo, Japan, ranked no. 2 last year. The must-try is the sea perch grilled over charcoal and topped with roasted rice and a black vinegar glaze. Chef Seiji Yamamoto was the winner of last year’s Chefs’ Choice award.

6. Multiple award winner Restaurant Andre in Singapore, where the dish "Memory", warm foie gras jelly with black truffle coulis, is highly recommended. It was no. 5 last year.

7. Waku Ghin at Singapore's Marina Bay Sands, another multiple award winner, where chef Tetsuya Wakuda’s marinated botan shrimps with sea urchin and Oscietre caviar is to be sampled. It was previously at no. 11.

8. Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet in Shanghai, China, where the chocolate foie gras tartines are said to be sublime. Its rank is unchanged from last year. Pairet is also behind no. 11, Mr And Mrs Bund, also in Shanghai (2013: 7th).

9. Cantonese restaurant Lung King Heen at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong, recommended for master chef Chan Yan Tak's sautéed lobster with vegetables in fermented bean sauce. Lung King Heen was no. 13 before.

10. Italian restaurant 8 1/2 Otto E Mezzo Bombana in Hong Kong, for the ‘Fassone’ veal tenderloin, fresh porcini mushroom, and barley. In 2013, the restaurant was 6th.

Look through the list from 11 to 20, and restaurants in the same cities have won again, other than no. 19, Jungsik in Seoul, Korea.

The same cities continue to dominate in ranks 21 to 30, though three of the winners are from Delhi, India, and no. 24 is a French restaurant from Taichung in Taiwan, Le Moût Restaurant, rather than cuisine from Taipei, the more well-known Taiwan destination.

Restaurants ranked 31 to 40 show a little more variation, featuring 28 Hubin Road in Hangzhou, China at no. 33, Japanese restaurant Wasabi in Mumbai, India, at no. 36, and Robuchon Au Dôme at the Grand Lisboa Hotel at Macau, China at no. 39.

Hajime at no. 42 is the only representative from Osaka, Japan, while Nihonbashi in Sri Lanka (no. 44) is the only restaurant in the list from the country. At no. 47 is Sarong from Bali, Indonesia, and no. 49 is Karavalli from Bangalore, India.

Glassdoor's best employers for 2014 include many with Asian offices

Glassdoor, a community where people share salaries and inside information about their employers, released the results for its sixth annual Employees’ Choice Awards, honouring the 50 Best Places to Work, and new for 2014, the 50 Best Medium-Sized Companies to Work For.

Most of the companies and employees which use Glassdoor are based in the US, so feedback may not be quite the same in our region. Some of the companies which have won awards may not have a presence in Asia either, but many do.

Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge
 Of the top ten employers with 1,000 or more employees, Bain was listed no. 1 with a 4.6 star rating out of a maximum of 5 stars. A Glassdoor user is quoted saying "Drive real changes to solve big problems, while learning a ton and having a clear career path." The company has 14 offices in the Asia Pacific region, Bangkok, Mumbai, Singapore and Tokyo among them.

In second place, Twitter. The company lists Singapore, Sydney, Seoul, and Tokyo among its international office locations, and Glassdoor gives it a 4.6-star rating as well.

LinkedIn is in third place, also with 4.6 stars. LinkedIn opened its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore in 2011. In Asia Pacific, LinkedIn has a presence in nine cities, Bangalore, Hong Kong and Melbourne among them.

Google, which seems to be on every job-seeker's wishlist, is rated no. 8 on the list, with 4.3 stars, and Apple is ranked 35th with 3.8 stars. Both have Asian offices as well. Google is in 16 cities in Asia and the Pacific, from Australia to China, India, Malaysia and Thailand (and of course Singapore). Apple lists 547 jobs in 13 countries and territories in Asia Pacific at the time of writing, China, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and Japan among them.

While the tech industry dominates in the top 10, there are companies from other industries as well. Travel conglomerate Orbitz Worldwide and Nestle Purina Petcare were ranked 9th and 10th respectively.

Orbitz mentions a Sydney office on its website, and current job openings include vacancies in Bangalore, Sydney, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Nestle Purina Petcare's Asia, Oceania and Africa headquarters are in Sydney, Australia, while the Nestle group is present in 17 countries and territories in Asia Pacific, including China, Korea, Singapore and Vietnam.
