Sustainable Thai flavours celebrated in four-hands dinner at Dining on the Rocks

This August, Executive Chef Kien Wagner of Six Senses Samui and Chef Gongpitak (Im) Boontanaveerapat, Chef De Cuisine from Phuket's Jampa restaurant celebrate sustainable Thai flavours together at Dining on the Rocks, Six Senses Samui. Both chefs believe the best ingredients do not need much persuasion.

For two evenings only - August 13 and 15, 2026 - Executive Chef Wagner welcomes Chef Im for an exclusive four-hands dinner that highlights Thailand's produce, the people who grow it, and the stories that begin long before they reach the plate.

While Samui and Phuket sit just a few hours apart, each island offers its own distinct landscape, seasons and ingredients. This collaboration brings them together in a menu shaped by both places, combining produce harvested from Six Senses Samui's Farm on the Hill with ingredients sourced through Jampa's close network of regenerative farmers, artisans and fishermen.

Guests can expect a tasting menu that is bold in flavour yet restrained in approach, including seafood caught in southern waters, vegetables picked at their peak, as well as fruits, herbs and native ingredients presented with precision.

For Chef Kien, the dinner is a natural extension of the philosophy that guides the kitchens at Six Senses Samui. Chef Im has earned recognition at Jampa for redefining what sustainable dining can look like in Thailand. Awarded a Michelin Green Star, the restaurant is known for its wood-fired kitchen, minimal-waste philosophy and deep commitment to regenerative agriculture. These values will travel to Samui for this collaboration.

This six-course four-hands dinner will be served in two seatings each evening. As seating is limited, advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Anantara Thailand resorts feature in The White Lotus Season 3

Three Anantara Thailand resorts have been officially announced as filming locations for the Emmy-winning series HBO Original series The White Lotus. Filmed across Thailand, The White Lotus Season 3 features the country's landscapes, cultural heritage, and architecture to create a mesmerising setting for the series’ signature plot twists and social satire.

Each of the featured Anantara resorts embodies the essence of Thai island life, from the beaches of Koh Samui to Phuket’s coastline. The Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, and Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort are key settings for a fictional resort, The White Lotus Thailand.

Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort

Set along the shores of Bophut Beach, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort is one of the island’s most iconic resorts, with architecture inspired by Southern Thai heritage. The resort has 106 rooms, suites and beachfront pool suites and is within walking distance to the Fisherman’s Village. Occupying a lush site that was once a coconut plantation, the resort’s landscaping — including lotus ponds and a spa garden — was designed by architect Bill Bensley.

Multiple locations within the property are featured as The White Lotus Thailand, including the signature Thai-style lobby, security station, tree-lined resort entrance, the employee parking lot and resort’s jewellery store.

Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort

Situated on a private beach in Chaweng, Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort blends modern luxury with Samui’s rich history. One of the most distinctive settings in The White Lotus Season 3 is the resort’s Singing Bird Lounge, a treehouse-style bar nestled within the branches of a 120-year-old tree. Announced as a key filming location for the bar scene, the lounge offers panoramic ocean views and draws inspiration from the island’s bird-singing contests, a tradition that attracts thousands of spectators.

As guests sip handcrafted cocktails at sunset, the melodies of Samui’s avian performers create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas

Locations in Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas have been designated The Wellness Sanctuary, Spa, and Belinda’s room in the HBO series. With 183 villas and suites along Mai Khao Beach in Phuket, this hideaway is renowned for its seclusion and luxury.

Guests looking to experience The White Lotus firsthand can book The Lotus Awakening Escape package*, a four-night Phuket and Koh Samui retreat. The stay includes experiences at all three Anantara resorts featured, as well as unique lotus-inspired activities that reveal the heart of Thailand.

Begin with the allure of Phuket on the golden sands of Anantara Mai Khao, breaking up poolside relaxation only for excursions, wellness rituals and sumptuous dining. The next stop is Koh Samui, where the team at Anantara Bophut will take you on a spiritual journey and arrange private dining and spa indulgences. One of the island’s most exclusive dining venues, Tree Tops, awaits at Anantara Lawana Koh Samui, a sister resort 15 minutes away by car.

Borderless fine dining at etcha

Bangkok’s newest fine dining destination, etcha, introduces a borderless dining philosophy intertwined with European cooking techniques.

Expect an elegant, contemporary setting with plush décor, enhanced by seamless service. A neutral earthy palette of terracotta, beige, and green reflects etcha's deep connection to nature. The space is further enhanced by soft fabric accents, and warm lighting.

Etcha’s menu celebrates diverse traditions and seasonal ingredients, inviting diners to embark on a culinary journey that transcends expectations. Each dish merges fine-dining techniques, regional ingredients, and global inspirations.

Signature creations include:

Grey pomfret with mint and pomegranate: The pomfret, meticulously dry-aged for enhanced texture and taste, is crowned with a vibrant granita and finished with a tableside drizzle of tangy pomegranate juice.

Squid with basil and caviar: Inspired by Chef Giacomo Primante’s childhood memories, this dish incorporates Japanese sashimi techniques to craft squid “pasta,” enriched with Thai-style coconut milk, Italian pesto, and French culinary precision.

Monkfish: This dish is a tribute to the chef's French culinary heritage, reflecting his respect for high-quality ingredients. Delicately-prepared monkfish is paired with zucchini flowers filled with a rich and velvety chicken mousse, celebrating tradition with a modern twist.

Black sourdough, lotus: This dish beautifully combines local and international ingredients to tell a meaningful story. The lotus flower mousse, inspired by Thailand and symbolizing purity, is paired with sourdough ice cream, representing the tradition of sharing bread. A rich chocolate biscuit ties these elements together.

“Our flavours are designed to evoke curiosity, inspire emotion, and create lasting memories. Meals become moments where culinary artistry meets storytelling,” said Chef Primante.

At the heart of etcha’s innovation is a dedication to sustainability and responsible sourcing. Chef Primante spent nine months collaborating with local farms and suppliers to ensure the use of premium ingredients while supporting Thailand’s agricultural communities.

“Every dish tells the story of its origins,” said Chef Primante. “Our approach is deeply rooted in respect for the environment and a commitment to preserving the integrity of each ingredient.”

Specific practices include sourcing organic produce, working with ecoconscious seafood providers, and using farm-to-table practices that reduce waste.

Lily’s reimagines classic dishes with a contemporary twist, offering customisable sharing plates for groups of all sizes. Meanwhile, Caleō - derived from the Latin word for 'being in love’ - invites guests to savour elegant afternoon teas or late-night cocktails.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa has five treatment rooms and a relaxing pod, and is complemented by a state-of-the-art fitness centre and two swimming pools.

The dedicated events floor presents nine flexible function spaces. The star is the Ritz-Carlton Grand Ballroom, the largest of its kind in the city, which can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The ballroom is connected to pre-function areas and an outdoor terrace, and sports three LED screens.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok offers a variety of local touchpoints, such as the Defining Moment, where guests are invited to the Terrace to experience a new interpretation of a daily Klong Yao (Long Drum) ceremony. Devised by The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, the drum beats signal the start of evening celebrations.

There are morning sessions of Terrace Chi taichi, set against the backdrop of the lawns and lakes of Lumpini Park; new-generation tours of the One Bangkok Art Loop, as well as Golden Hour cocktails inspired by stories from Bangkok’s rich heritage.

“As the first Ritz-Carlton property in Bangkok, we bring old traditions and culture  to life through imaginative, immersive experiences, including performances, activities, and artistic journeys,” said Tina Liu, the hotel’s GM.

“Our stays are designed to create memorable moments that resonate with our guests, paying homage to Thailand’s ‘cultural bloom’ – the evolution from its graceful past to its exciting future.”

Thailand's first dining and sky observatory opens

Source: Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. A couple admire the most powerful telescope on Phuket island.

From a grill-focused menu to guided astronomy sessions and hands-on Thai cooking classes, DARA Cuisine Phuket and Sky Observatory is poised to become the island's new go-to venue for modern Thai dining and stargazing.

DARA, meaning 'star' in Thai, celebrates the country's culinary heritage and Andaman seafarers who used stars for navigation. The new Sky Observatory is equipped with a custom-built dome and Phuket's most powerful state-of-the-art telescope, offering an intimate rooftop experience where Sky Storytellers guide guests through the wonders of the night sky.

During the day, an all-star team of Anantara chefs deliver masterclasses in Thai cooking in the show kitchen. In the evenings, diners have the opportunity to try local specialties from all corners of Thailand alongside Royal Thai cuisine.

The Southern region is represented by moohong Phuket, a slow-cooked meat dish seasoned with soy, star anise and cinnamon. From the North, khao soi curry noodle soup offers translucent river prawns served with homemade egg noodles and pickles, as well as the restaurant's signature tam ka noon mun wan – pounded young jackfruit served as a salad with sweet potato chips for added crunch. Central Thailand's complex flavours shine in miang kham khai hoy mhen, a popular snack of the Siamese court involving wild betel leaves, as well as green curry with Phuket lobster.

In the Northeastern dishes, such as the kob thod nam pla with crispy frog legs and the nam tok nuea ko kun featuring Korat wagyu beef, regional ingredients get a creative twist from Head Chef Supakarn "Hong" Lienpanich's family recipes and passion for fermentation. For those with sweet tooths, the goat cheese and honey ice cream paired with Krabi cashew praline will delight.

With an on-site fermentation kitchen, barrel-aged fish sauce cellar, and a verdant herb garden, DARA is a living ecosystem that nurtures every ingredient to its fullest potential. “DARA's culinary philosophy is simple: honour the natural taste of quality local produce and let the ingredients shine,” said Chef Hong.

“In addition to growing our own herbs, we've partnered with ecoconscious local farms and fisheries, which allows us to adapt to the rhythm of the seasons – from serving crisp harvest in the dry months to showcasing Thailand's natural abundance when the monsoon comes.”

Details

DARA Cuisine Phuket is in Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. It is open daily for cooking classes from noon till 3 pm, for dinner from 6 pm to 10 pm.

Source: Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok. BDMS Connect Center.

BDMS Wellness Campus has unveiled BDMS Connect Center, which features state-of-the-art meeting and event facilities over 3,400 sq m in the heart of Bangkok.

“The BDMS Connect Center is truly unmatched. Highly functional, and with a focus on embracing sustainability and wellness, the space is truly unlike anything I have seen before, and the Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok team simply cannot wait to host exceptional events here,” said Dan Smith, GM of Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok.

Positioned as a sustainable urban oasis, BDMS Connect Center aims to establish a direct connection between meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) and nature. A distinguishing feature of the centre is its commitment to incorporating wellness elements into meetings and incentives.

The BDMS Connect Center is inspired by the layers of a forest ecosystem. At the Forest Floor level, which includes the lobby reception, pre-function*, and exhibitions areas including a cocktail platform and waterfall, the ambience is akin to the bottom layer of a rainforest. The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok announces renovation of River Wing

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced the renovation of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s River Wing, designed to confirm this historic hotel’s position as one of the best in the world.

Scheduled to commence in March 2019 and taking seven months to complete, the renovation will encompass all the rooms and suites in the Thai hotel’s River Wing, together with the lobby, swimming pools and Lord Jim’s, The Verandah and Riverside Terrace restaurants. The historic Authors’ and Garden Wings of the hotel will remain open throughout the renovation.

In keeping with the successful restoration of the Authors’ and Garden Wings in 2016, the River Wing renovation is designed to further enhance the accommodation and facilities of the iconic hotel, while maintaining its classic, Thai-influenced elegance and unique resort style.

A major component of the work will be to enlarge the guest rooms located in the River Wing. The overall number of guest rooms will be reduced from 338 to 301, while the number of suites will increase from 30 to 46. All rooms will have views of the Chao Phraya river. Jeffrey Wilkes of Design Wilkes has been appointed to oversee the changing of the interiors, which will feature updated amenities, bespoke Thai fabrics, and reconditioned artwork from the hotel’s collection. The hotel’s Lobby, Lord Jim’s, The Verandah and Riverside Terrace restaurants will also be renewed, with many original features restored and reinstated.

All rooms and suites in the Authors’ and Garden Wings, located in separate buildings to the River Wing, will remain open throughout the renovation period, as will the hotel’s remaining restaurants and banqueting facilities. These include the two-Michelin-starred Le Normandie, the Authors’ Lounge, the Bamboo Bar, Ciao Terraza, Sala Rim Naam, Terrace Rim Naam, The China House and the Ballroom. In addition, the hotel’s spa and fitness facilities will remain fully operational.

As both swimming pools will undergo renovation, alternative arrangements will be made for guests wishing to swim.

“Throughout its 142-year history, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has been an icon of this vibrant city. The River Wing renovation will complement the stunning Authors’and Garden Wing refurbishment, and has been meticulously designed to recognise the property’s heritage while ensuring our continued position as one of the world’s legendary hotels,” said Greg Liddell, GM, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

Details:

The River Wing will close during the city’s low season, and re-open in October 2019, in time for the start of the high season in Bangkok.

TV boxes popular in Thailand, still available in Singapore

Fifteen percent of Singaporean consumers use a TV box which can be used to stream pirated television and video content. These TV boxes, also known as illicit streaming devices (ISDs), allow users to access hundreds of pirated television channels and video-on-demand content, usually with a low annual fee. TV boxes often come preloaded with pirated applications allowing 'plug-and-play' access to pirated content.

The survey found that MyIPTV, UBTV, WorldTV, MoonHD, and Infinity TV were some of the most popular illegal applications amongst Singapore consumers.

The survey, commissioned by the Asia Video Industry Association’s (AVIA) Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) and conducted by YouGov, also highlights the detrimental effects of streaming piracy on legitimate subscription video services. Of the 15% of consumers who purchased a TV box for free streaming, more than one-quarter (28%) asserted that they had cancelled their subscriptions to a Singaporean-based online video service as a direct consequence of owning an ISD. Nearly one in five (18%) Singaporean users in the same segment have abandoned international subscription services in favour of ISD purchases.

Of those Singapore consumers who own an ISD, more than half of respondents (62%) claim to have purchased their illicit streaming device from two of the largest Southeast Asia-based e-commerce stores*. More than one-fifth of ISD owners (21%) say they acquired their devices via one of the world’s most popular social media platforms**. Over one-third (38%) of ISD owners said they purchased their pirate TV box from IT exhibitions or physical retail stores in Singapore.

Neil Gane, GM, CAP said, “The overt availability of ISDs in Singaporean malls and IT exhibitions is a major concern for the content industry. Unfortunately, there is no one silver bullet to deterring piracy due to the fragmented nature of the ecosystem. What is required is an holistic solution to include enforcement, cooperation with technology platforms and intermediaries, disabling access to pirated content through effective site blocking and consumer outreach”.

In late November AVIA announced the landmark November 2 High Court injunction ordering Singapore’s Internet service providers to block access to popular illegal applications that are frequently preloaded on ISDs sold in Singapore.

As a consequence of these High Court orders, Gane added, “Consumers are wasting their money when purchasing new subscriptions to illegal applications when they find their ISD can no longer access live sports matches or their favourite TV shows. CAP will continue to prevent and disrupt illegal feeds of live sports, TV channels, and VOD content through judicial blocking orders against piracy applications. ISDs can never provide quality programming and a service guarantee.”

Singapore currently has over a dozen online legal services providing an array of live sports, TV channels and video-on-demand content at varying pricepoints.

In mid-November, AVIA released similar results for Thai consumers that revealed 45% of consumers use a TV box which can be used to stream pirated television and video content.

The survey found that Mango TV, HD Playbox and U Play are among the most popular pirate applications amongst Thai consumers.

Of the 45% of consumers who purchased a TV box or dongle for free streaming, more than two in three (69%) stated that they cancelled all or some of their subscription to legal pay TV services. Nearly a quarter (24%) said that they cancelled their subscriptions to a Thai-based online video service as a direct consequence of owning an ISD. International subscription services, which include pan-Asia online offerings, were impacted the most - nearly one in three (30%) Thai users have abandoned subscriptions in favour of ISD purchases.

Cancelling legitimate subscription services and replacing them with pirated content is risky, said Gane at the time of the announcement.

"The damage that piracy does to the creative industries is without dispute. However, the damage done to consumers themselves, because of the nexus between content piracy and malware, is only beginning to be recognised. Piracy websites and applications typically have a 'click happy' user base, and, as such, are being used more and more as clickbait to distribute malware. Unfortunately the appetite for 'free' or cheap subscription pirated content blinkers users from the very real risks of malware infection".

Of consumers who own an ISD, about half of respondents (47%) claim to have purchased their ISD from two of the largest Southeast Asia-based e-commerce stores*. Close to one-third (31%) of ISD owners say they acquired their devices via one of the world's most popular social media platforms**.

In addition to the short-term problem of cancelled subscriptions is a longer-term problem. The survey found that ISDs are particularly favoured among 18- to 24-year-olds, with more than three in four (77%) cancelling legitimate subscription services as a result of owning ISDs. Forty percent of the cancellations were of international online subscriptions.

The Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), Ministry of Commerce, who oversees the Copyright Act, commented that "to enhance the efficiency of enforcement action, the DIP has proposed the amendment of the Copyright Act by adding provisions on the manufacture, sale, import, or traffic into the country of devices or any parts or components of a device, for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure.

"These amendments were approved by the Cabinet on 16 October 2018 and will shortly be presented to the State Council. The amendments are explicitly targeted at the manufacture and distribution of pirated TV boxes. This is a crucial step to address the current piracy problem".

Sompan Charumilinda, Executive Vice Chairman at cable and satellite operator True Visions, listed a number of concerns. "First is the danger to consumers through the use of malware and spyware embedded in these illicit sites and applications. Second is that supporting these criminal enterprises does real damage to legitimate businesses that are struggling to survive. Third, it also undermines the Thailand 4.0 initiative and the country's aspiration to become counted among the world leaders in the new digital economy by showing Thailand to have made little progress in terms of its acceptance and tacit approval of these criminal networks.

"Consumers should care about piracy personally because of the harmful effects of malware and spyware, and also because of the damage that it does to our country. As a leading media company in Thailand we are happy to work with the Department of Intellectual Property, CAP and all relevant stakeholders to help continue to educate the public about these dangers," he said.

A growing concern from the anti-cybercrime community remains the nexus between online piracy and pernicious malware such as spyware, malware mining and ransomware. In September 2018, the European Union Intellectual Property Office released a report entitled Identification and Analysis of malware on selected suspected copyright infringing websites which found that most of the documented malware on piracy sites were Trojans or other malware which, when installed on an end-user’s, computer would cause “not only financial losses, but also theft of personal data and other risks of unwanted access and control”.

AVIA's Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) includes major video content creators and distributors in Asia. Members include: beIN Sports, Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, FOX Networks Group, HBO Asia, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Premier League, Turner Asia-Pacific, A&E Networks, Astro, BBC Worldwide, CANAL+, Cignal, La Liga, Media Partners Asia, National Basketball Association, PCCW Media, Singtel, Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia, TVB, True Visions, TV5MONDE, and Viacom International Media Networks.

Akaryn launches fourth akyra hotel in Sukhumvit, Bangkok

Akaryn Hotel Group, a Thai hospitality company with a diverse collection of luxury hotels and resorts, has announced that akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok will open in December 2017. This will be its fourth akyra property.

The upscale boutique hotel is located on Sukhumvit Soi 20, the epicentre of Bangkok’s busiest tourism zone, in a neighbourhood known for its fine restaurants and buzzing nightlife, upscale lifestyle malls, spas and green recreation spaces.

The 50-room akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok will offer guests 30-60 sq m accommodation with cityscape views, as well as units with floor-to- ceiling glass doors that slide open onto generous balconies. The design aesthetic will combine natural woods with modern-retro chic accents.

The hotel features a rooftop lounge with a pool bar with sun loungers and cabanas that will cater for up to 100 people. The rooftop will also house a multipurpose function room.

On the ground floor, guests can enjoy a casual dining experience with the signature akyra gourmet breakfast and a choice of comfort foods.

The launch of akyra Sukhumvit Bangkok at the end of this year follows the recent opening of akyra Thonglor Bangkok – a property comprising 148 studios and one- to three-bedroom suites located in one of Bangkok’s most fashionable districts, renowned for its contemporary culture and creative cuisine.

“Our two akyra properties offer distinct urban experiences, but each one is also defined by the strong sense of style and independence that sets the akyra brand apart from other hotels. The aim is to make a stay with akyra far more than a room to sleep in at night, yet being one of the highlights of the overall Bangkok experience,” says Anchalika Kijkanakorn, Founder and MD of Akaryn Hotel Group.
