All That Matters (ATM)
, Asia’s premier business festival for the global entertainment and media industries, returns this year as part of a six-day celebration from 26 September to 1 October 2025 at the Hilton Singapore Orchard.

The festivities begin with Music Matters Live from 26 to 1 October, leading into All That Matters from 29 September to 1 October. Coinciding with Singapore F1 Week, ATM marks 20 years of shaping Asia’s cultural, creative and commercial landscape this year.

Anantara Thailand resorts feature in The White Lotus Season 3

Three Anantara Thailand resorts have been officially announced as filming locations for the Emmy-winning series HBO Original series The White Lotus. Filmed across Thailand, The White Lotus Season 3 features the country's landscapes, cultural heritage, and architecture to create a mesmerising setting for the series’ signature plot twists and social satire.

Each of the featured Anantara resorts embodies the essence of Thai island life, from the beaches of Koh Samui to Phuket’s coastline. The Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, and Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort are key settings for a fictional resort, The White Lotus Thailand.

The resort has 106 rooms, suites and beachfront pool suites and is within walking distance to the Fisherman’s Village. Occupying a lush site that was once a coconut plantation, the resort’s landscaping — including lotus ponds and a spa garden — was designed by architect Bill Bensley.

One of the most distinctive settings in The White Lotus Season 3 is the resort’s Singing Bird Lounge, a treehouse-style bar nestled within the branches of a 120-year-old tree. Announced as a key filming location for the bar scene, the lounge offers panoramic ocean views and draws inspiration from the island’s bird-singing contests, a tradition that attracts thousands of spectators.

As guests sip handcrafted cocktails at sunset, the melodies of Samui’s avian performers create an unforgettable atmosphere.

It's the Angs vs the Huangs and 5G on Sentosa in Singtel's 2022 Chinese New Year film

Source: Singtel. The Ang (left) and Huang (right) families look daggers at each other as they vie to win in competitions during a staycation.
Source: Singtel. Poster for The Hunt for the Lucky Tiger, Singtel's Chinese New Year festive film for 2022.

Singtel is greeting the year of the tiger with its annual short film for Chinese New Year, celebrating the season’s spirit of bonding with family and community. Titled The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger, the film is the third instalment in Singtel’s festive film series featuring two rival families who have endeared themselves to Singaporeans after their madcap but meaningful altercations in previous films.

The film serves as a showcase for 5G use cases, such as Garuda Robotics’ autonomous drone systems which are currently undergoing trials at the 5G@Sentosa testbed*, a public-private sector collaboration led by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), and Singtel.

Set against the backdrop of the pandemic, this year’s film sees the Ang and Huang families (in red, or 'ang' in Hokkien and Teochew, and yellow, or 'huang' in Mandarin Chinese respectively) go on staycation during the Chinese New Year break instead of travelling overseas. They end up in the same hotel on the 5G-powered island of Sentosa, sparking fresh contention and comedic rivalry between the families when they run into each other.

They also sign up for the same treasure hunt as part of their staycation itinerary. During the hunt, the families pit their wits and skills against each other in search of a lucky tiger that is brought to life via augmented reality.

They also go head-to-head in an immersive, remote-controlled car race powered by Singtel’s 5G network. The race is hotly contested, with both nominated drivers able to show their skills in controlling their cars with the lag-free next-generation connectivity.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Ah Boy, the youngest Ang son, goes missing midway through the search for the tiger. Everyone rallies around Ah Boy’s mother, setting aside their differences to search for him. Mr Ang even goes as far as to call for a search and rescue drone from Garuda Robotics to locate his son. Thanks to 5G, he can capture drone footage and movements via live video streaming on his mobile device...

Lian Pek, VP, Group Strategic Communications and Brand, Singtel, said, “Chinese New Year exemplifies the importance of family, friends and relationships, closely reflecting Singtel’s spirit of celebrating connections. As we rejoice with loved ones during this festive period, it is a timely reminder to treasure the relationships we have made, especially in light of recent global events that have tested these bonds.”

Lian added, “As we move into a new year, the film is also a look to the future, showcasing 5G technology that Singapore can capitalise on to underpin economic recovery and our journey into the digital economy. As a leader in 5G innovation, we’re offering audiences a glimpse of tomorrow, from augmented reality enhanced entertainment to drone applications powered by hyperconnectivity.

"5G has the unbridled potential to redefine experiences and operations across multiple verticals and we hope to empower the broader community by harnessing the benefits of this next-generation technology.”

Singtel has achieved 75% coverage and its 5G network has been named Singapore’s fastest by Ookla for the second time running**.

Cybercriminals ride on Netflix, WhatsApp usage to deliver malware

Source: Check Point Research. The Google Play page for the FlixOnline app.
Source: Check Point Research. The Google Play page for the FlixOnline app.

Cybercriminals have been caught sharing Android malware disguised as a Netflix content enabler app. According to Check Point Research (CPR), replies containing malware are automatically sent to incoming WhatsApp messages.

The original malware was found hidden in an app on Google Play named FlixOnline. While it claimed to allow users to view Netflix content from all around the world on their mobiles, it actually monitors the victim’s WhatsApp notifications, then sends automatic replies to the their incoming messages that use content that it receives from elsewhere.

The replies say: “2 Months of Netflix Premium Free at no cost For REASON OF QUARANTINE (CORONA VIRUS)* Get 2 Months of Netflix Premium Free anywhere in the world for 60 days. Get it now HERE https://bit[.]ly/3bDmzUw.”

The link can be used to distribute phishing attacks, spread false information or steal credentials and data from users’ WhatsApp accounts, CPR warned.

In this case, CPR notified Google, which removed the app from the Play Store. It had been up for two months, and downloaded approximately 500 times.

The authors of the FlixOnline research, Aviran Hazum, Bodgan Melnykov and Israel Wenik of CPR, said that users should be wary of download links or attachments that they receive via WhatsApp or other messaging apps, even when they appear to come from trusted contacts or messaging groups.

CPR's tips to remain protected against mobile malware include:

- Updating the operating system regularly. Mobile devices should always be updated to the latest version of the OS to protect against the exploitation of privilege escalation vulnerabilities.

- Only installing apps from official app stores. This reduces the probability of an unintentional installation of mobile malware or a malicious application.

- Enabling ‘remote wipe’ capability on all mobile devices. All devices should have remote wipe enabled to minimise the probability of loss of sensitive data.

- Install a security solution on your device.

OTT video and video games are the winners in 2020 entertainment & media landscape

Consumer habits can take a lifetime to learn – but just a lockdown to lose, says PwC. According to the consultancy's Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2020–2024, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated and amplified ongoing shifts in consumers’ behaviour, pulling forward digital disruption and forging industry tipping points that wouldn’t have been reached for many years.

Digitalisation, one of the major forces shaping all industries, has been intensified by safe distancing and mobility restrictions, PwC said. As a result, the entertainment and media (E&M) world in 2020 has become more remote, more virtual, more streamed, more personal and – for now at least – more centred on the home than anyone anticipated at the start of the year.

PwC has forecast that 2020 will see the sharpest fall in global E&M revenue in the 21-year history of this research, with a decline of 5.6% from 2019 – more than US$120 billion in absolute terms. In Singapore, the expected decline is 5% from 2019, valued at approximately US$274 million.

Oliver Wilkinson, Entertainment and Media Leader, PwC Singapore said: "The year 2020 presents a paradox for many Singapore media businesses. There is more consumption of media than ever before, with Singaporeans stuck at home during the circuit breaker. Yet at the same time, there has been a sharp contraction in revenue and profitability for many industry players.”

While the shockwaves from 2020 will continue to ripple through the global economy, the PwC forecast shows the industry’s fundamental growth trajectory remains strong. The projections show that in 2021, global E&M spending will grow by 6.4% (Singapore: 5.3%). Singapore E&M spending is also expected to bounce back to US$5.5 million, reaching 2019 levels. From 2019 to 2024, the outlook forecasts overall revenue growth running at a 2.8% CAGR globally and a 2.5% CAGR in Singapore.

The current pain in E&M is most acute in segments that COVID-19 literally shut down, such as events: live music, cinema and trade shows. Spending on cinemas in Singapore projected to fall by 59% in 2020 and is expected to make a slow recovery. The current forecast shows that by 2024, cinema spend will remain shy of 2019 levels (US$205 million in 2019, US$200 million in 2024). At the same time, the long-running transition in newspapers from print to digital has been fast-forwarded several years, cutting into papers’ print revenues, for example.

The ongoing decline in global newspapers and consumer magazines has accelerated sharply in 2020, with overall revenues in Singapore slumping by 13%. Consumer magazines are suffering the most. That said, digital offers a silver lining: a tipping point for consumer magazines in 2024 will see their global revenue from digital advertising overtake that from print advertising. Other important sectors will struggle to claw back the growth they lost in 2019. For example, out-of-home advertising is expected to decline by 24% in 2020 but will recover in 2022.

With people staying at home, over-the-top (OTT) video has seen global revenue surge by 26% in 2020 with the Singapore numbers climbing ahead at 32%. And it is forecast to keep rising strongly in the coming years, doubling in size from US$234 million in 2019 to US$477 million in 2024. With more people home, the video games segment has also grown quickly in Singapore amidst the crisis. The segment shows 9% growth this year will remain one of the fastest growing segments going forward to 2024.

Source: PwC. Graphic illustrating the Global Entertainment & Media Outlook.
Source: PwC. Graphic illustrating the Global Entertainment & Media Outlook.

Wilkinson added: "What is consistent with the outlook from prior years is the wide variance of performance between different segments, particularly given the acceleration of digital media adoption at the expense of traditional. It is in this sense that the pandemic has brought the future forward.

“That said, most affected of all have been the live entertainment and cinema segments. Before this crisis, experiences were amongst the better performing parts of the industry, but they have taken a large hit due to the safe distancing and travel restrictions. We still see a good future for such events and live experiences, but it may be some years before they can adapt to this new normal."

PwC’s 21st annual edition of the Global Entertainment & Media Outlook is an online source of global analysis for consumer and advertising spending. With like-for-like, five-year historical and five-year forecast data and commentary for 14 defined industry segments in 53 territories, the Outlook makes it easy to compare and contrast consumer and advertising spending across segments and territories.

Singtel TV debuts Stories from Our Little Red Dot

Source: Singtel.
Stories from Our Little Red Dot (走进小红点), a series of original, Singapore-created short-form content in Chinese, premieres on Singtel TV on 1 March 2020.

The series, comprising nine stories told over 81 episodes, will feature unique perspectives on Singapore’s heritage and real-life inspirational stories, some of which have never been told before.

Debuting on Singtel TV’s Jia Le channel (channel 502), Stories from Our Little Red Dot can be enjoyed by all Singaporeans on the Singtel TV GO mobile app for free, without a subscription. The bite-sized Singapore stories, produced by nine local production houses, were commissioned by Singtel TV and supported by the IMDA’s Public Service Broadcast Contestable Funds Scheme (PCFS) as part of Public Service Broadcast (PSB) content to celebrate Singapore’s culture and national identity.

Airing every Saturday and Sunday at 8.45 pm, Stories from Our Little Red Dot will kick off on 1 March with culinary series Vanishing Flavour (寻味) on 1 March, followed by Sky High (壮志凌云) featuring 10 local entrepreneurs beginning 14 March, then heritage series The Past Tells Its Own Stories (很久很久以前) on 29 March.

The themes covered are very different: Vanishing Flavour uncovers the stories behind nostalgic dishes like Hakka mugwort kueh, Hainanese salt-and-pepper mooncake, and Eurasian putugal* as well as fast-disappearing traditions from Singapore’s multiethnic foodscape.

Sky High follows pioneers of new and innovative businesses such as cleaning robot maker LionsBot, and remote medical consultation service Doctor Anywhere.

The Past Tells Its Own Stories, on the other hand, brings to life Singapore of the 1920s and 30s. It portrays the lives of early immigrants who worked as coolies, performers, businessmen and cab drivers.

Stories from Our Little Red Dot also stars Singapore's favourite local actors and actresses. In May, actor Li Nanxing personally cooks for social service volunteers in Nanxing’s Cook Off (爱星料理); while in June, actor Benjamin Heng goes in search of wildlife in Garden City Explorers (花城探索者). In August, artistes Jeremy Chan and Michelle Tay hunt for urban relics of significance in By the Way (路过不错过); while actress Kate Pang leads a discussion of parenting trends in Really, Ma? (真的,妈?) in September.
