K-brand IP protection MoU signed with Shopee

Intellectual property (IP) infringement issues have grown in tandem with the global e-commerce market, which expanded in value from US$2.9 T in 2018 to US$5.8 T in 2023, an average annual growth rate of 14.6%. According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), intellectual property infringement cases through e-commerce increased approximately 2.5x in 2023 compared to 2018. The Asian and Latin American regions showed the highest proportion of counterfeit product distribution. Korean products have become major targets due to their brand value and scarcity.

The Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KOIPA) has been particularly concerned. According to an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report, the scale of counterfeit products infringing Korean companies' IP rights reached approximately US$9.7 B globally as of 2021, equivalent to 1.5% of Korea's total exports. This resulted in Korean companies losing sales of US$6.1 B, and the loss of 13,855 manufacturing jobs.

This has led to work with major e-commerce platforms like Shopee as they play a crucial role in strengthening K-brand protection. KOIPA's Director Kim Yong-seon recently announced that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Shopee's Singapore headquarters on June 24. Building upon the original MOU signed in 2020, this renewed agreement encompasses significantly expanded cooperation to protect Korean brands and sellers in the region, including offline enforcement linkages for fundamental solutions to counterfeit product distribution.

The MOU consists of three major cooperation areas:

Strengthening the response system for intellectual property infringement of Korean brands

Shopee will collaborate with KOIPA to provide easy access for monitoring and reporting of suspected IP infringements involving Korean brands, in accordance with agreed protocols.

Offline enforcement collaboration to block counterfeit product distribution

To overcome the limitations of online anti-counterfeit enforcement and to strengthen efforts to prevent the distribution of counterfeit goods, both parties agree to explore and implement joint response measures when necessary.

Expand educational activities to raise awareness of intellectual property protection

Both organisations plan to jointly conduct education and awareness-raising activities to improve intellectual property protection consciousness among both sellers and consumers.

Kim emphasised: "We are pleased to establish a cooperation system for K-brand protection with Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. We will actively support our companies' overseas expansion and export activities by expanding cooperation with other major global e-commerce platforms.”

“Shopee is proud to renew and strengthen our partnership with KOIPA to better safeguard Korean brands in our region,” said Ian Ho, VP at Shopee.

“As e-commerce continues to grow, it is more important than ever to work closely with trusted partners like KOIPA to enhance IP enforcement and build a secure and trustworthy environment for all users.”

Korean indie beauty brand d'Alba reaches new heights globally

Image source: d'Alba. Global sales trends from 2023 to 2024. Sales in Japan grew 3.3x and ASEAN sales grew 4.2x.

Vegan beauty brand d'Alba has seen 210% growth year-on-year in overseas sales, to the tune of approximately US$100 M in 2024. The brand's international market revenue now accounts for 45% of its total revenue.

Its global growth came from its flagship product, the White Truffle First Spray Serum, alongside Waterful Sunscreen and Double cream.

D'Alba had been generating most of its sales from the Korean market until 2023. The First Spray Serum initially gained traction in Korea as a "flight attendant mist", with notable references in major beauty channels locally.

An industry expert commented, "While many K-beauty brands' revenue rely on specific markets such as China, US, or Japan, d'Alba's evenly distributed growth across Europe, Japan, North America, and ASEAN is a rarity. This positions them uniquely in the competitive landscape."

Looking ahead, the brand is optimistic about the continued expansion. It stated: "These global markets are still at the early stage. We're receiving many enquiries from large retail platforms worldwide. Our focus on channel expansion and the new products such as beauty devices will drive further growth."

Neuron Mobility launches e-scooters in Seoul

Singapore-headquartered Neuron Mobility, an e-scooter operator in Australia and New Zealand, has launched its safety-first e-scooters in Seoul.

Source: Neuron Mobility. Neuron Mobility is launching e-scooters in Seoul, Korea.

The decision to enter Korea was made after the government recently introduced tighter rules to what was previously a largely-unregulated market, and also to respond to the authorities’ increasing focus on e-scooter safety. According to Neuron Mobility, micromobility is booming in many Korean cities.

Neuron will be launching their Korean-spec e-scooter which is fitted with the world’s first app-controlled helmet lock. This electronically secures a safety helmet to every e-scooter, releasing it at the start of the trip so they are available to all riders. This will be an important differentiator in Korean market where recently-updated laws require all riders to wear a helmet.

Zachary Wang, CEO of Neuron Mobility said: “We’re delighted to launch in Seoul, we’ve been studying the rise in popularity of e-scooters in Korea for some time. Now that new regulations are being introduced, as well as an increased focus on safety, we think it’s the perfect time to bring our safely-leading e-scooters, and collaborative ways of working to the city.”

He continued: “Wherever we operate in the world we welcome good regulations and we have a major focus on safety. We are already talking to the authorities in Seoul and have demonstrated our helmet lock and other safety features. We look forward to adapting to meet their needs as well as those of Seoul’s safety-conscious riders.”

Neuron’s industry-leading e-scooters are built specifically for renting and rider safety. The company was the first to implement a full suite of geofencing, allowing the authorities to better control where and how fast e-scooters can be ridden. Neuron’s e-scooters were also the first to feature interchangeable batteries for greener operations. They were the first to integrate voice guidance to educate users to ride safely. Neuron also launched the world’s first app-controlled helmet lock, which secures a safety helmet to the e-scooters between trips for the benefit of safety-conscious riders.

Neuron has introduced a range of other innovations including a topple detection feature that can detect if an e-scooter has been left on its side which then alerts an operations team to reposition it safely; an emergency button which can tell if someone has had a fall and helps the rider call the emergency services; and, a Follow my Ride feature allows the rider’s friends and family to track an e-scooter trip in real time for added safety and peace of mind.

Neuron riders are required to be at least 18 years old, with a valid driver’s licence. On 12 January 2021 new, tightened, regulations were also promulgated in Korea to enforce laws that require all e-scooter riders to wear safety helmets.

The company will initially deploy 2,000 Korean-spec e-scooters to test and refine operations before scaling significantly later in the year.

Over the last six months Neuron has won new contracts to operate in Canberra, Townsville and Dunedin in Australia and New Zealand.

Le Meridien Seoul features traditional Korean touches and French elegance

The Le Meridien, Seoul, the first Le Meridien property in Korea, also marks the debut of London-based interior architecture and interior design studio David Collins Studio in the country. Situated in the upscale Gangnam district, the hotel is within walking distance from the Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam subway stations. Gimpo (GMP) and Incheon (ICN) International Airports are 30 and 65km away, respectively.

The studio, appointed to oversee the interiors for all of the public spaces and rooms, blended Parisian opulence with strong mid-century references while rooting the hotel to its location with inspirational takeoffs from traditional Korean arts and crafts. The hotel comprises old and new buildings linked by a 12th floor bridge. David Collins Studio created a grand colonnade running the length of the original building to evoke a sense of grandeur and add rhythm to the space.

The lobby features a large-scale artwork made from traditional Korean hanji (한지) paper, while the décor and furniture incorporates elements of local artisanship applied to contemporary furnishings: decorative woven and knotted thread (an ancient technique known as maedeup, 매듭) becomes woven metal; hammered metal tableware (bangjja, 방짜) becomes hammered metal door handles; and the fine hand-stitched intricately patterned fabrics Korea is famous for are reinterpreted for window treatments and used as trims on the drapery.

The 336 smoke-free rooms exude mid-century European style with relaxing palettes of green, blue, and lavender. Erco lighting enhances the décor. The guest rooms have eucalyptus trimming on architectural details, as well as lavender-and-cream leather screens in a pojagi (보자기, traditional Korean wrapping cloth) pattern that references Korean heritage. Near a custom clothes-hanging system, the LM BED offers enhanced comfort with a Sealy mattress.

Suites are distinguished by their ample space, luxe finishes, rich fabrics on window seats, velvet upholstery, and local artwork. Wall panelling, oak floors, and low-level lighting enhance the residential feel. Each 919-sq ft balcony executive suite offers a panorama of Gangnam through floor-to-ceiling windows. The balconies are ideal for private gatherings.

The Presidential Suite is one of the most exclusive suites in Seoul, and has hosted world’s biggest celebrities. Guests enter via a grand foyer, where a rotunda features a high-level screen inspired by the work of French architect and designer Pierre Chareau. The suite comprises six main rooms, each with a unique and distinct feel. Its visual impact has been heightened with the removal of the floor above the living room to create a double-height space.

Cuisine prepared in the show kitchen can be served in the indoor dining area or on the outdoor terrace with a generous dining space. A spiral staircase leads to the suite’s upper terrace, which features a jacuzzi and cabanas.

Located next to the entrance lobby, Latitude 37 is both a coffee shop and a cocktail bar. Latitude 37’s timber cabinets, curated art pieces and custom decorative lighting in opaque glass transform seamlessly from coffee outlet in the day to chic cocktail bar at night.

The wellness area comprises a pool, jacuzzi area and fitness centre. The area is characterised by teal-coloured lacquered panels and leather trims, with white stone and glazed green tile flooring and wall treatments.

The event facilities total 1,650 sq m. Four function venues can be divided into smaller areas, and outdoor space is also available.

Up to 500 guests can be hosted in the 736-sq m Da Vinci Ballroom, which combines chic European modernity and East Asian mystique. Ceiling insignia and chandeliers against a sophisticated but reserved palette of finishes convey an atmosphere of majesty.

The function rooms are named after Impressionist artists. The Chagall Room is ideal for intimate gatherings while natural light influences the ambience of the Monet Room. The Cezanne Room is finished in grey and white as a neutral backdrop for a variety of events.

The 525-sq m Maple Garden can accommodate private parties and product launches. Prefunction areas allow for catering options as well as breakout spaces.

Free internet is available to all SPG Members when booking on Starwood websites, mobile sites and SPG apps. Benefits vary by membership level.

AC works launches Korean versions of free stock image websites

Source: AC works. Screen capture of illustAC.
Source: AC works. Screen capture of illustAC.

AC works, which already has over 2.3 million users in Japan, is now expanding internationally. The company has launched the Korean version of its flagship stock image websites photoAC, illustAC and silhouetteAC

Traditionally, the stock image industry imposed a number of restrictions on the use of a stock image, charging each time the image is used for different purposes. Stock images and the vector files that govern their shapes often cost money, for example. Once an image is purchased, it can typically be used in limited circumstances, for example once in an advertising campaign for a specific website. Royalties may need to be paid each time the image appears. Recognisable people featured in an image must sign a model release to allow the image to be used freely, under any circumstances. Images may also come with other stipulations, such as who they may be credited to, whether they can be edited, or if they can be used in commercial settings.

AC works has cut through the complexity with the three sites, which offer free high-quality images and vectors which can be downloaded and used for commercial purposes, with no credit title required. PhotoAC has acquired all rights from photographers and models so that there are no image rights to worry about. IllustAC and silhouetteAC also offer editable AI/EPS format vector files for free. AC works further dispenses with account registration or requiring an app to use the services. Images can be downloaded with a single click, the company said.

The company plans to expand its content portfolio, and aims to reach more than 20 million users worldwide by 2020.

At the inaugural Michelin Guide Seoul 2017 launch at The Shilla Seoul’s Dynasty Hall, the hotel's traditional Korean fine-dining restaurant La Yeon was awarded the prestigious Michelin three-star rating. Acclaimed for its authentic flavours, service, ambiance, and drink pairings, La Yeon is the only restaurant that is part of a hospitality brand in Seoul to receive three Michelin stars.

Every detail at La Yeon reflects an understanding and appreciation of Korean culture. Since opening in August 2013, La Yeon has offered reinterpretations of classic recipes using modern culinary techniques, complemented by tableware from Korean artists La Ki-Hwan and Lee Ki-Jo. The restaurant distinguishes itself with unique presentations of recipes dating back to ancient Korea.

La Yeon’s recognition in the Michelin Guide is a testament to The Shilla’s long-standing commitment to quality and exemplary service. To explore new heights, the restaurant regularly visits restaurants in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and New York for research and development. La Yeon’s dedicated team of buyers, recipe developers, and food connoisseurs source authentic, seasonal ingredients and only 100% Korean-made premium products. Every year, the team personally visits over 100 local suppliers to ensure quality standards are met.

Ingredients used at La Yeon include grouper, codfish, bamboo shoots, pine nuts, edible wild plants, and Hanwoo (한우, beef from a particular type of Korean cattle). The restaurant also offers a wide selection of drinks which are carefully selected to complement the dining experience.

“Since opening three years ago, we have continuously strived to recreate the best of Korean cuisine,” says Executive Chef Kim Sung Il. “The recognition is a result of our combined teamwork and motivates us to further our vision of sharing the beauty of Korean culture to guests from around the world.”

The Michelin Guide Seoul 2017 is the fifth guidebook to be launched in Asia following Japan, Hong Kong & Macau, Singapore, and Shanghai.

Korean women's clothing specialty mall HOTPING entered the global market in July 2015 and has since seen monthly international sales surpassing the 100 million won mark, contributing 10% of total sales.

"We believed that winning new markets quickly would secure future competitiveness after we started up in 2014 and we launched the English, Chinese, and Japanese versions of our online mall through the global e-commerce platform of cafe24," explained CEO Kim Yeo-jin. "We received orders from international customers even when we had the Korean site only, which also quickened our entry into the global market."

HOTPING is a portmanteau word mixing 'hot trend' and 'pink'. The platform caters for plus sized women with sizes from 44 (equivalent to XS in the US) to 105 (equivalent to XXL) for most of its products. The company has reached prominence through sponsoring the wardrobes featured in Korean costume dramas, especially in countries swept by the Hallyu, or Korean Wave, notably the US, China, and Japan. News anchors have also been enquiring about sponsorship. HOTPING is becoming popular with its line of Magic Pants, which are highly elasticated pants that can be worn comfortably.

"We will continue to make efforts to win new markets and will also continue offering beautiful clothes to our customers at reasonable prices like we do now," said Kim.
