TravelProtection
can be obtained with a tap on the My StarHub app. Customers can select the dates they would like to be protected, and on these dates, they will be covered for medical expenses of up to S$200,000, including COVID-19 treatment, or costs incurred for medical evaluation and repatriation. TravelProtection also covers loss of or damage to baggage, travel delay, trip cancellation, and more. StarHub customers can extend this protection to their travel companions, by selecting the duo option at S$7.40 daily or a family option at S$10.50 daily. For convenience, fees will be merged with their monthly bill.

As added benefits, StarHub Mobile customers also enjoy exclusive coverage for phone and SIM card replacement arising out of burglary, theft, or robbery during the trip, as well as the option to receive refunds for unused DataTravel plans due to trip cancellation or postponement.

For a limited time, StarHub Mobile customers taking up DataTravel will receive twice the amount of roaming data at no extra cost. Starting at S$5, the simplest plan now offers 2 GB (usually 1 GB) of roaming data, which is valid for three days in Asia Pacific destinations. Customers planning to spend more time abroad can select the S$20 plan for 6 GB (usually 3 GB) of roaming data, valid for 30 days across multiple trips and destinations.

TravelProtection is a group policy undertaken by StarHub as the policyholder and underwritten by Chubb Insurance Singapore.

Singtel users have the best experience roaming in Malaysia

Source: Opensignal. 4G download speed experience in Mbps for Singapore roamers in Malaysia compared to the experience for Malaysian mobile users.
Source: Opensignal. 4G download speed experience in Mbps for Singapore roamers in Malaysia compared to the experience for Malaysian mobile users.

In an analysis of roaming experiences for Singapore 4G mobile users in Malaysia in 2019, Opensignal has found that Singtel users enjoyed the best download speed experience, upload speed experience and latency experience.

M1 and StarHub users had a similar download and upload speed experience when in Malaysia, but StarHub users moved ahead of M1 in their roaming latency experience. While the average latency experience seen by both StarHub and M1 users was considerably slower than those seen by domestic Malaysian users — indicating a worse experience — Singtel users only fared 2.6 ms worse when compared to domestic Maxis users - Singtel users typically roam on Maxis.

Sam Fenwick, Insights Analyst, Opensignal, said that there is some correlation between the download speed experience observed by a roaming user and that observed by domestic Malaysian users on the same host network.

"This is most pronounced when comparing the download speed experience observed by Singtel roamers and domestic Maxis users, and less so when comparing M1 roamers against domestic Celcom users. With the latter, there’s a speed reduction of roughly 3.4 Mbps in favor of Malaysian Celcom users.

"This difference could be caused by a number of factors, such as the international connectivity between the two networks, the terms of the roaming agreement, another kind of bottleneck or even some form of throttling on roaming users that is affecting M1 users’ download speed experience when roaming on Celcom’s network," he said.

Latency experience is a measure of network responsiveness and would likely be adversely affected by international roaming given the extra steps that it entails, Fenwick said. Steps could include the need to reach the home operator’s core network, he explained.

In contrast, both StarHub and M1 users had a worse experience compared to domestic Malaysian users. The latency (responsiveness) experience seen by M1 users was nearly double that seen by Celcom’s domestic users (74.5 ms versus 39.4 ms, a difference of 35.1 ms), while the average latency experience seen by StarHub users (55.1 ms) was greater than that seen by Celcom, DiGi and Maxis users by 15.7, 12.8 and 17.2 ms, respectively.

"Operators typically have roaming agreements with one or more host networks, allowing their customers to roam on them while abroad. We detected that when in Malaysia, Singtel users typically roam on Maxis, M1 users most often roam on Celcom and StarHub users normally roam on Celcom, DiGi and Maxis," Fenwick added.
Fenwick also explained that differences in the average mobile experience observed between roamers and domestic users can arise due to differences in the mix of mobile devices they’re using and the locations where they spend most of their time. The mobile experience is typically superior in urban areas, for example.

"There’s also the potential impact from the additional latency and potential bottlenecks created by having to relay the information between host and home core networks and between the home core and the content delivery networks," he said.

Source: StarHub SmartSupport Lite offers mobile phone aftersales care to SIM Only customers.

Customers can enrol existing phones digitally through the My StarHub app – no supporting documents and no activation fee are required.

"The mobile phone has become the centre of our customers’ everyday life, and we know any form of downtime is a major inconvenience. Offering excellent aftersales support is therefore key to improved customer experience and retention,” said Johan Buse, Chief of Consumer Business Group, StarHub.

“Through the launch of SmartSupport Lite, we want our customers to enjoy the best aftersales experience on Singapore’s fastest mobile network. It is part of our continuing #HelloChange journey commitment – delivering better and different experiences to our customers.”

For S$8 monthly, customers on StarHub’s #HelloChange SIM Only plans can be assured of device care even if they had purchased their phones from other local authorised dealers. For any reason and at any time, customers on SmartSupport Lite can raise a swap request through a dedicated hotline, which operates round the clock.

Customers will be able to get their phones swapped in as soon as four hours within Singapore for an additional nominal swap fee, which is based on the retail price of the phones. Doorstep delivery is free-of-charge for all local swap requests. The swap service is also available for customers travelling in 21 major cities.

SmartSupport is Singapore’s first mobile phone after-sales service and has become a popular add-on among customers. It was introduced in 2013 by StarHub in collaboration with Asurion, a technology protection services provider. The new SmartSupport Lite service is an extension of SmartSupport.

Details:

Available from today, SIM Only customers can enrol their phones through the My StarHub app in less than 10 minutes – no paperwork is needed. Customers will be guided to verify that the phones qualify for SmartSupport Lite. Confirmation on service activation is sent within seven days.

Upon successful activation of SmartSupport Lite, customers can swap their enrolled devices twice in 12 months for any reason, no-questions-asked. All they need to do is to submit a service request through the SmartSupport hotline. For successfully processed service requests before 2 pm from Monday to Saturday, customers will be able to get their device swapped in as soon as four hours within Singapore.

Customers on SmartSupport Lite can also gain access to screen repairs for a flat fee of S$99 with free door-to-door service. The phones are couriered to and from authorised services centres free-of-charge and repaired using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. This service, which is currently available for selected Apple and Samsung phone models, can be used once in a 12-month rolling period. The screen repair service is also available for customers on SmartSupport.

No more cable services in Singapore next year

From July 2019 StarHub will no longer offer cable services. The company is helping cable customers migrate to fibre connectivity instead.

Donovan Kik, VP of Segment and Marketing, StarHub, said, “We constantly refresh our service offerings to ensure they are aligned with what our customers desire, including the best possible service standards and more choices on the most modern all-fibre broadband network where they can enjoy faster Internet surfing speeds as well as higher quality pay TV services with better interactivity and smarter features.

"This way, they would also be well prepared to adopt new, transformative digital services such as in telehealth, asset monitoring and remote learning that will depend on high-speed, low latency communications networks running on fibre.”

StarHub promotional offers for value customers include discounted subscriptions, a free wireless router, free fibre TV set-top box rental, and free additional StarHub TV channels. This makes the cost of the fibre subscription the same as paying for cable, StarHub said.

In addition, StarHub’s technical experts will take care of the end-to-end installation and activation of fibre services for customers, and that includes providing home networking advice such as ideal wireless router placement and fibre TV cabling solutions.

StarHub is progressively reaching out to existing cable customers through various channels including letter, phone call and SMS to provide more information and assistance for a smooth transition to fibre networks.

Customers may also submit web requests at www.starhub.com/switch-to-fibre to receive specific information such as fibre promotional offers and wired or wireless solutions for receiving fibre TV services in their bedrooms. A customer guide to upgrading to fibre is also available at this dedicated site.

The telco, which has also exited the electricity resale market, will cease the provision of cable services after 30 June 2019.

Source: OCBC Bank. OCBC Bank’s Group CEO, Samuel Tsien (left), and StarHub’s CEO, Tan Tong Hai (right), forge Singapore’s first bank-telco strategic partnership with the first store-in-store at OCBC Bank’s orchardgateway branch.

OCBC Bank and StarHub have announced Singapore’s first bank-telco strategic partnership to drive Singapore’s collaborative economy, also known as the ‘We Economy’. To mark the start of this partnership, the two companies launched the first store-in-store at OCBC Bank’s orchardgateway branch, which illustrates the benefits customers can expect out of the We Economy.

Combining OCBC Bank’s financial capabilities and StarHub’s catalogue of info-communications and entertainment services, customers can now seamlessly manage their banking and digital lifestyle needs in one store. This store-in-store concept will be expanded in stages to cover more retail outlets.

The partnership between OCBC Bank and StarHub is the first step in a multi-year plan towards bringing together essential businesses across industries. These include transport, retail, insurance, health and wellness, and real estate. The partnership will welcome companies that share the same ideology to be part of its We Economy ecosystem.

OCBC Bank and StarHub identified the potential of the We Economy from working on two key thrusts for many years – digital innovation and customer experience. OCBC Bank started the use of data analytics in 2002 to obtain deep consumer insights in its continuing drive to find new ways to better serve its customers. It was the first to roll out fingerprint biometrics (2015), voice biometrics (2015), speech recognition (2016), open APIs (application programming interfaces) in 2016, specialised AI chatbots (2017) and transactional APIs (2017).

StarHub, Singapore’s first fully-integrated info-communications and entertainment service provider, innovates continually to bring greater benefits to customers, from streaming Asia’s first ‘live’ virtual reality concert to enabling Singapore’s first autonomous hotel room service robot and comprehensive mobile device after-sales support. Earlier this year, it also launched a new facility called Hubtricity to help accelerate Smart Nation initiatives and to showcase its deep capabilities in connectivity, cyber security and data analytics.

Samuel Tsien, Group CEO of OCBC Bank said: “This partnership is born out of the strong belief by both of us that by innovating together, rather than each doing its own thing, we can serve our consumers more comprehensively, effectively and efficiently. StarHub and OCBC have been very active in the space of digital innovation. Our partnership is the beginning and a part of a multi-year plan towards building Singapore’s first We Economy.”

Tan Tong Hai, CEO, StarHub said: "In this new economy, effective collaboration can drive business success. We are happy to team up with OCBC Bank, leveraging our shared strengths in digital lifestyle solutions and omnichannel engagements to deliver enhanced customer experiences. Our form of collective intelligence becomes even more vital as it enables us and our partners to anticipate and better respond to customers’ evolving motivations and preferences.”

All current and new customers affiliated with both OCBC Bank and StarHub can sign up online to receive an additional 3% rebate on their StarHub bills for 12 months. The rebate of up to S$5 per month will be credited into customers’ OCBC credit card or bank account. Customers can look forward to enjoying more perks in future.

StarHub retail outlets will offer the new iPad Pros from June 13

StarHub will offer the all-new 10.5" iPad Pro and new 12.9" iPad Pro from Apple, featuring the world’s most advanced display with ProMotion technology and enhanced performance with the new A10X Fusion chip.

Source: Apple. The iPad Pro from Apple features what the company says is the world’s most advanced display and incredible performance.
Source: Apple. The iPad Pro from Apple features what the company says is the world’s most advanced display and incredible performance.

“These are by far the most powerful iPads we’ve ever created with the world’s most advanced displays featuring ProMotion, the powerful new A10X Fusion chip and the advanced camera system of iPhone 7,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s VP, Product Marketing at the time of the launch, on June 5. “Together with iOS 11 these new iPad Pro models will radically change what users can do with iPad.”

The new 10.5" model reduces the borders by nearly 40% and still weighs 1 pound (about 0.45 kg). Combined with new iPad features in iOS 11 coming this year, like the all-new Files app, customisable Dock, improved multitasking and deeper integration of Apple Pencil, iPad Pro gives users the ability to be even more productive and creative.

iPad Pro's redesigned Retina display features ProMotion, a new technology that delivers refresh rates up to 120Hz for fluid scrolling, greater responsiveness and smoother motion content. With ProMotion, Apple Pencil is even more responsive with an industry-best, 20-millisecond latency for even more fluid and natural drawing. ProMotion also improves display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.

The Retina display is Apple's brightest iPad display yet and features an antireflective coating. True Tone dynamically adjusts the white balance of the display to match the light around you for a more natural and accurate viewing experience and a wide colour gamut enables iPad Pro to deliver digital cinema-standard colours.

The 64-bit A10X Fusion chip provides performance that is faster than most PC laptops shipping today. A six-core CPU and 12-core GPU deliver 30% faster CPU performance and 40% faster graphics performance than the A9X chip, while delivering all-day battery life*. The iPad Pro features  the same advanced front- and back-facing cameras as iPhone 7, including a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation and a 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, as well as a four-speaker audio system.

Support for LTE Advanced and 802.11ac Wi-Fi makes it easier to stay connected when travelling in more than 180 countries and regions.

Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard are available for purchase separately. Advanced sensors in Apple Pencil measure both pressure and tilt for a natural drawing, annotating and note-taking. A new full-sized Smart Keyboard has been custom-designed for the 10.5" iPad Pro, offering a thin yet durable keyboard that never needs to be charged or paired over Bluetooth and is foldable into a protective Smart Cover.

The new iOS 11 will include new features for the iPad, including:
  • A new customisable Dock that provides quick access to frequently used apps and documents from any screen;
  • Improved multitasking, including a redesigned app switcher that brings Spaces to iOS, making it easier to move between apps or pairs of active apps, used in Split View and now Slide Over;
  • The new Files app that keeps everything in one place, whether files are stored locally, in iCloud Drive or across other providers like Box, Dropbox and more;
  • Multi-Touch Drag and Drop, which is available across the system to move text, photos and files from one app to another, anywhere on the screen;
  • A new document scanner in Notes, which lets users easily scan single or multipage documents, removes shadows and uses powerful image filters to enhance readability; and
  • Deeper integration with Apple Pencil, with support for inline drawing to write along text in Notes and Mail, Instant Markup to easily sign documents, annotate PDFs or draw on screenshots, and a new Instant Notes feature, which opens Notes from the Lock Screen by simply tapping Apple Pencil on the display. New searchable handwriting makes it easy to search for handwritten text or characters.

StarHub DataShare lets customers share mobile data allowances

Source: StarHub website. StarHub DataShare lets users split up their mobile data allowance and share it with others under the same billing account.
Source: StarHub website. StarHub DataShare lets users split up their mobile data allowance and share it with others under the same billing account.

StarHub Mobile postpaid customers can now share a portion of their local data bundle, including upsized data, across multiple mobile lines under the same billing account.

A first in Singapore and unlike typical shared data pool offerings, StarHub’s new value-added service DataShare offers customers a balance between control and flexibility. Using theMy StarHub app or through StarHub’s My Account web portal DataShare users will be able to allocate on-the-fly between 1GB and 12GB of shareable data in total as well as adjust the proportion in 1GB denominations every month.

“We recognise that usage patterns even within families are diverse, with some having more than enough data and others in want. This is a challenge that DataShare has been designed to overcome. With DataShare, our customers will be able to choose when, with whom and how much to share, optimising data usage and cost for the family,” said Wang Li-Na, Head, Segment & Marketing, StarHub.

DataShare, when paired with the DataJump data upsize option, will offer much larger data bundles perfect for sharing, says StarHub.

StarHub makes it easier for mobile customers to surf and travel

StarHub Mobile postpaid customers can now take advantage of a Mobile DataTravel plan with a flat fee of S$15 that gives them 2GB of data for 30 days of use within a single country or across multiple destinations.

DataTravel does not require users to manually search for or lock their phones to a specific preferred mobile network as is normally required for roaming plans. StarHub says it is the only Singapore telco to offer this advantage, and that more destinations will be supported in the coming months.

Customers will also receive SMS notifications before their DataTravel plan expires or depletes. They can also activate an additional 2GB or 3GB DataTravel plan. With each additional activation, any unused data will be carried forward for another 30 days of use. If the data has been fully utilised, excess data usage will be charged based on prevailing DataTravel Unlimited or RoamEasy Plans which the customer has subscribed to.

“Our DataTravel customers will be able to enjoy doing what they have come to love on their phones simply and affordably, with a data plan that can be brought across multiple borders and mobile networks. With DataTravel, we are happy to free our customers from the common constraints of overseas data usage, that are cost and accessibility," said Wang Li-Na, Head of Product & Marketing, StarHub.

StarHub brings 12GB mobile data bundles back, and more

StarHub’s new two-in-one Hubbing pack SurfHub is now the most affordable way for customers to stay connected on the move as well as at home.

SurfHub from StarHub bundles two StarHub services – a 4G mobile postpaid line with at least 12GB of data and a 1Gbps fibre home broadband subscription – from S$96.56 monthly over 24 months. This is about half of what customers pay for a standalone 12GB mobile plan. As part of SurfHub, customers will also get up to 700mins of local talktime and 1,500 local SMS/MMS as well as a mobile handset subsidy.

“We know customers miss the freedom that huge data bundles offer and wish they were as affordable as before. Faster 4G technologies have catalysed the adoption of data-intensive services, and our customers are now sharing more and watching for longer on their smartphones. With SurfHub, we want to continue giving our Hubbing customers the best value, which is what StarHub is known for,” said Wang Li-Na, Head of Product & Marketing, StarHub.

SurfHub customers can also get 50% discount on selected complementary services, such as International Roaming for more affordable roaming overseas, 2-in-1 LINE for hosting two numbers on one SIM, or MultiSIM for multi-device sharing using one mobile number.

SurfHub customers can also enjoy StarHub Go Select online streaming service at half the price for 12 months. For an additional S$4.95 per month (usual monthly rate: S$9.90), the Go Select pack offers customers unlimited viewing of content such as the best in US and British productions, Asian dramas and variety shows, and documentaries on mobiles, tablets or laptops. Customers can stream StarHub Go content on their StarHub Mobile postpaid line without incurring mobile data charges.

Together with the launch of SurfHub, StarHub is enhancing its five-services-in-one pack HomeHub Go by more than doubling its mobile data bundle to 15GB. HomeHub Go 1Gbps customers can get up to 30% Hub Club discounts on additional 15GB mobile lines (usual monthly rate: S$70 per line). The four other services are 1Gbps fibre home broadband, 21Mbps mobile broadband, up to 77 channels on fibre TV and a home phone line.
