No more cable services in Singapore next year

From July 2019 StarHub will no longer offer cable services. The company is helping cable customers migrate to fibre connectivity instead.

Donovan Kik, VP of Segment and Marketing, StarHub, said, “We constantly refresh our service offerings to ensure they are aligned with what our customers desire, including the best possible service standards and more choices on the most modern all-fibre broadband network where they can enjoy faster Internet surfing speeds as well as higher quality pay TV services with better interactivity and smarter features.

"This way, they would also be well prepared to adopt new, transformative digital services such as in telehealth, asset monitoring and remote learning that will depend on high-speed, low latency communications networks running on fibre.”

StarHub promotional offers for value customers include discounted subscriptions, a free wireless router, free fibre TV set-top box rental, and free additional StarHub TV channels. This makes the cost of the fibre subscription the same as paying for cable, StarHub said.

In addition, StarHub’s technical experts will take care of the end-to-end installation and activation of fibre services for customers, and that includes providing home networking advice such as ideal wireless router placement and fibre TV cabling solutions.

StarHub is progressively reaching out to existing cable customers through various channels including letter, phone call and SMS to provide more information and assistance for a smooth transition to fibre networks.

Customers may also submit web requests at www.starhub.com/switch-to-fibre to receive specific information such as fibre promotional offers and wired or wireless solutions for receiving fibre TV services in their bedrooms. A customer guide to upgrading to fibre is also available at this dedicated site.

The telco, which has also exited the electricity resale market, will cease the provision of cable services after 30 June 2019.

StarHub brings 12GB mobile data bundles back, and more

StarHub’s new two-in-one Hubbing pack SurfHub is now the most affordable way for customers to stay connected on the move as well as at home.

SurfHub from StarHub bundles two StarHub services – a 4G mobile postpaid line with at least 12GB of data and a 1Gbps fibre home broadband subscription – from S$96.56 monthly over 24 months. This is about half of what customers pay for a standalone 12GB mobile plan. As part of SurfHub, customers will also get up to 700mins of local talktime and 1,500 local SMS/MMS as well as a mobile handset subsidy.

“We know customers miss the freedom that huge data bundles offer and wish they were as affordable as before. Faster 4G technologies have catalysed the adoption of data-intensive services, and our customers are now sharing more and watching for longer on their smartphones. With SurfHub, we want to continue giving our Hubbing customers the best value, which is what StarHub is known for,” said Wang Li-Na, Head of Product & Marketing, StarHub.

SurfHub customers can also get 50% discount on selected complementary services, such as International Roaming for more affordable roaming overseas, 2-in-1 LINE for hosting two numbers on one SIM, or MultiSIM for multi-device sharing using one mobile number.

SurfHub customers can also enjoy StarHub Go Select online streaming service at half the price for 12 months. For an additional S$4.95 per month (usual monthly rate: S$9.90), the Go Select pack offers customers unlimited viewing of content such as the best in US and British productions, Asian dramas and variety shows, and documentaries on mobiles, tablets or laptops. Customers can stream StarHub Go content on their StarHub Mobile postpaid line without incurring mobile data charges.

Together with the launch of SurfHub, StarHub is enhancing its five-services-in-one pack HomeHub Go by more than doubling its mobile data bundle to 15GB. HomeHub Go 1Gbps customers can get up to 30% Hub Club discounts on additional 15GB mobile lines (usual monthly rate: S$70 per line). The four other services are 1Gbps fibre home broadband, 21Mbps mobile broadband, up to 77 channels on fibre TV and a home phone line.

Singtel ups max speeds on fibre broadband for home offices

Singtel will offer a 10Gbps fibre broadband service to residential customers in Singapore starting this month. Leveraging on its Next Generation 10GPON or Gigabit Passive Optical Network, this first-of-its-kind service for residential customers follows the launch of the pilot phase last year.

Goh Seow Eng, MD, Home, Consumer Singapore, Singtel, said, “We made a commitment to our customers to bring them the best network innovations, the very latest technologies for work and play. We recognise that residential customers are using greater bandwidth and requiring faster speeds for their online activities.”

Through a dedicated, ultra-high-speed 10Gbps wired connection*, users will be able to download and stream at larger volumes of data. The service, which also features four 1Gbps ports, can serve as a home networking solution for multi-user environments such as home offices and large households. This will enable individuals working from home to conduct multiple videoconferences, file transfer sessions and even run a home business without compromising on connectivity and bandwidth.

To enhance their 10Gbps experience, customers can set up Singtel’s latest WiFi Mesh to improve wireless performance and connectivity in their homes. WiFi Mesh ensures consistent bandwidth at high speeds and increased coverage, providing robust wireless connectivity for data-demanding applications.

ViewQwest launches 2Gbps fibre broadband services

ViewQwest, Singapore’s premium boutique Internet service provider, has announced the commercial availability of 2Gbps fibre broadband.

“Consumers are increasingly using their home networks for higher bandwidth activities – from downloading large files to streaming TV shows to even running their own businesses from home. We hear them, we understand how they use the Internet, and we want to offer them the fastest residential Internet connectivity available in the world. I am proud that my team has developed a plug-and-play methodology, enabling us to scale from our limited trials to being able to offer 2Gbps to all consumers in Singapore,” said Vignesa Moorthy, CEO, ViewQwest.

The new ViewQwest 2Gbps Fibernet broadband bundle is available in single network and multi-network options. Bundles continue to include ViewQwest’s Freedom VPN, which allows customers access to geo-restricted international streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu, PPTV, Viki, BBC iPlayer, ITV and Tonton. Also included in the bundles are ViewQwest TV, an Android-based media player that connects the TV to the Internet.
