Singtel releases National Day film for 2020

Singtel has launched its annual National Day film tribute, celebrating the Singapore spirit of tenacity and perseverance as the country navigates its way through the challenges of COVID-19. This is the year is currently airing on Singtel TV and various social media channels.

This is the year acknowledges the pressures and strains that the pandemic has placed on Singapore society, and pays tribute to the Majulah (onward) spirit that is propelling Singaporeans through the storm to emerge stronger.

“The way Singaporeans have responded to this crisis is something we can all be proud of,” said Chua Sock Koong, Singtel’s Group CEO.

“Our coming together as a community, our discipline as a nation, our fortitude and quiet determination to get through this and get on with life has become even more pronounced as National Day approaches. We may be celebrating in a more muted way this year without the usual fanfare, but our national pride and core values are still the same, the Singapore spirit is stronger than ever, and we want to celebrate that.”

The two-minute photo montage begins as a tender survey of the Singapore landscape when the new normal kicked in, moving from one empty public space to another, from playgrounds to hawker centres to void decks and the prospect of having to forego annual staple events such as the F1 and the National Day Parade.

“It’s been a difficult time for everyone, and the film captures this dislocation and sense of displacement, ” says Lian Pek, VP, Group Strategic Communications and Brand at Singtel.

“But what starts off as a reflection on the things we are having to give up this year becomes an invitation to see the good that has come out of the crisis. Despite the restrictions on movement, disruptions to daily life, and cancelled events, the closing photos in the film show that Singaporeans have gained even more important things in return.”

The film features photos by well-known photographers Chia Aik Beng, Nicky Loh and Tay Kay Chin as well as from members of the public.

Conceptualised in-house and produced in collaboration with Akanga Film Asia, the film is narrated by veteran actor Lim Kay Tong. the video will air on Singtel TV and hosted on various social media channelsfrom 29July 2020.

It's Singapore National Administrative Professionals Week. Do you need a shoulder to cry on?

Birthday bouquet.
Bouquet of flowers.

On the eve of Singapore Administrative Professionals Day 2016, a survey conducted by last-mile delivery provider Zyllem has revealed that 93% of respondents believe the Administrative Professionals in their office are the unsung heroes of local businesses.

The survey also reveals that 64% co-workers admit to taking their Admin Professionals for granted, frequently relying on them to perform tasks outside their job scope including delivering umbrellas to colleagues stranded in the rain; sending forgotten passports to colleagues at airport check-in; performing first aid; and even providing an early morning wakeup call to ensure everyone makes it on time to an important client meeting.

The survey was conducted by Zyllem to coincide with Singapore National Administrative Professionals Week from 24 to 30 April 2016, which is dedicated to Administrative Professionals in recognition of their contributions to the workplace in Singapore.

The survey highlights that while 73% do pause to consider the Admin Professional’s job scope before assigning a task, more than two thirds regularly rely on them to go the extra mile and undertake extra tasks to ensure office harmony and that workplace operations run smoothly.

The most common role that is out of the job scope is that of “a shoulder to cry on” - 45% of those surveyed admit to turning to their office Admin Professional for help during times of stress. Four in 10 (42%) of those surveyed rely on their office Admin Professionals to wear a tech support hat and resolve problems with computers, the Internet and printers. If there is a company event on the horizon, 30% of those surveyed would expect their Admin Professionals to block time in their calendar to perform duties as Official Photographer.

Asked why, in their view, Admin Professionals regularly and many times unquestioningly go beyond the call of duty, 70% of respondents think they are just trying to be helpful while 63% assume Admin Professionals feel responsible for the overall welfare of the office. This could explain some of the more unusual expectations their colleagues have of them - 28% of respondents turn to their Admin Professionals when they need first aid, 17% admit to requesting an umbrella when stranded in the rain over lunchtime; and one in five admit to asking their Admin Professional colleague to give them a wakeup call to ensure they arrive at an early morning meeting on time.

Eric Ong, Country Managing Director, Zyllem Singapore, says that Singapore Administrative Professionals week, is the ideal time to show some appreciation. He said, “At Zyllem, we speak to Singapore’s Administrative Professionals every day and so we understand that they’re on the front line when it comes to ensuring businesses across the island run smoothly. They often go way beyond the call of duty and are so good at ensuring office harmony that many of us are guilty of losing sight of their actual job scope. It’s important for everyone to take some time to show some appreciation and to give unsung Admin Professional heroes everywhere the recognition and thanks they deserve.”

To mark Administrative Professionals Week 2016, Zyllem is rallying a show of appreciation for Admin Professionals. Co-workers have been asked to nominate the unsung Admin heroes in their own teams, and tell Zyllem why their nominees deserve to receive one of five special appreciation gifts.

Diana Ngo, from financial consultancy Blackpeak Group, nominated their Admin Professional Liana Olivera to receive one of the special appreciation gifts. Diana said, “Liana runs our local office and handles so many things for us. She helps when she doesn’t have to, often going above and beyond her job scope. She definitely deserves the biggest thank you.”

Valentina Lee, an Admin Professional at National University of Singapore was nominated by her colleagues Angeline Sim and Venetia Ng to receive another of Zyllem’s special gifts of appreciation because, said Ng, “Valentina is someone who does not shy away from opportunities or difficult situations, willingly taking up challenges. I would really like to acknowledge her for all the big and small things that she has done for the office.”

Zyllem will be sharing appreciation tips throughout Administrative Professionals Week on the brand’s Facebook page

National Gallery Singapore has launched its first international special exhibition, Reframing Modernism, co-curated and co-presented with Centre Pompidou, Paris, France. This landmark exhibition, the inaugural exhibition at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery, will showcase more than 200 works from about 50 artists, with approximately half from Centre Pompidou and the other half from Southeast Asia.

According to the National Gallery Singapore, this will also be the first time that an exhibition displays significant Southeast Asian and European artists in parallel through its study of one of the most influential artistic and intellectual drives of the 20th century – modernism – from the perspective of Southeast Asia.

Reframing Modernism challenges the existing paradigm of how modernist painting is presented. It brings to light previously unexplored perspectives which enrich the overall discourse. Taking a comparative approach, the exhibition reveals shared concerns between the artists and their bodies of work to create a different narrative of modernism. The unprecedented presentation includes works by Southeast Asian artists such as Le Pho (Vietnam), Nguyen Gia Tri (Vietnam), S Sudjojono (Indonesia), Affandi (Indonesia), Latiff Mohidin (Malaysia), Galo B Ocampo (Philippines), Georgette Chen (Singapore) and Tang Chang (Thailand), as well as European masters Vassily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Jean Dubuffet, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

“We are pleased to work with Centre Pompidou to develop this exhibition which reexamines the paradigm of Modernism. This is the first time in Singapore that visitors can view artworks from European and Southeast Asian masters in the same space. We hope the exhibition will inspire fresh and interesting perspectives of the received understanding of modernism and modern art,” said Dr Eugene Tan, Director at National Gallery Singapore. “Along with the Gallery’s long-term exhibitions, Reframing Modernism will reinforce our aim to further the understanding of modern art from Singapore and Southeast Asia within a global context,” he added.

Reframing Modernism is co-curated by Dr Tan, Senior Curator Lisa Horikawa and Curator Dr Phoebe Scott of the National Gallery Singapore, together with the Deputy Director of Centre Pompidou’s National Museum of Modern Art – Industrial Design Centre, Catherine David and Curator Dr Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov.

“Reframing Modernism testifies to the Centre Pompidou’s international reach and its pursuit of collaborations with prestigious partner institutions around the globe. Our collaboration with National Gallery Singapore on this unique project has been a most fruitful one and this co-curated exhibition is an excellent opportunity for us to learn more about modern Southeast Asian art and how modernism was perceived in this part of the world. The collaboration also gives art lovers in Singapore and Asia the opportunity to view major artworks from the Centre Pompidou, which houses one of the world’s two largest modern and contemporary art collections,” said Serge Lasvignes, President of the Centre Pompidou.

Reframing Modernism is showcased in the Singtel Special Exhibitions Gallery, which consists of three galleries, spanning across a total floor area of approximately 20,000 sq ft. Chua Sock Koong, Singtel Group CEO said, “We are excited that our contribution to National Gallery Singapore will enable Singaporeans to enjoy both iconic masterpieces from around the world alongside equally accomplished Southeast Asian art that we are proud to champion. We congratulate National Gallery Singapore and Centre Pompidou on their first-ever collaboration. Art is for everyone and we hope this will reach as many people as possible.”

Reframing Modernism will run from 31 March until 17 July 2016 at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery, located on level 3 of the City Hall Wing at the National Gallery Singapore. Admission into Reframing Modernism is chargeable at S$15 and S$25 for Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans respectively. Concessions apply.

The exhibition will open from 10am to 7pm from Monday to Thursday, and Sunday and public holidays, from 10am to 10pm from Friday to Saturday, and the eves of public holidays.

National Gallery Singapore shares preview of opening celebrations

National Gallery Singapore spans the restored and transformed former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings – two heritage buildings which have "witnessed the fall of a colony and the rise of a new nation", in the words of Tan.

National Gallery Singapore has announced that its opening celebrations and inaugural art festival will include more than 20 free events and activities.

From 24 November to 6 December the public will enjoy free admission to the exhibitions in the two permanent galleries, the DBS Singapore Gallery and the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery. An Art Carnival will also be held at the Padang from 27 to 29 November. In the evenings the Share the Hope Facade show, sponsored by Cartier, will make use of the facade of the National Gallery Singapore for a light and sound display.

A preview of the facade show, which will feature animated artworks from the collection.

The celebrations will include art forums and a panel discussion about the Gallery's contribution to promoting Southeast Asian art. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear more from curators, art critics and architects about the evolution of Southeast Asian art in the region, the changing roles of museums, as well as the architecture, design and conservation principles of the Gallery.

Theatre and film buffs can also look forward to plays inspired by artworks and the world premiere of Southeast Asian short films on the art in the Gallery’s exhibitions. Memora(film)ia: Random Acts of Remembering features three 10-minute films and is held in conjunction with the 26th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). With themes of memory and hope, one features an elderly lady reminescing about the Japanese occupation; another includes Zubir Said's Semoga Bahagia and explores loneliness and relationships, while the third stars people in MRT trains. SGIFF, a ticketed event, features the Gallery's auditorium in the City Hall Wing at B1 as a venue.

National Language Class, an interactive 30-minute performance for up to eight participants by Spell #7, is a short exploration of our national language recreating the National Language Class artwork by Chua Mia Tee. Chegu Utama, pictured, will explain key concepts like nama, ditinggal, and orang Singapura.

The new interpretations of artworks extend to dance and music that will be performed in surprising spaces and venues within the Gallery. In the Name of Red, a 10-minute dance performance by The Arts Fission Company, pays tribute to the shades of red in the Gallery's collection, for example. Resonates With, a 20-minute cross-genre musical performance, is curated by multidisciplinary artist Bani Haykal and inspired by Liu Kang's and Chen Wen Hsi's Balinese paintings, and Drummer by Yeh Chi Wei.

Exploration of the Gallery is complemented and enriched by the free Gallery Explorer app, created in collaboration with the Gallery's Innovation Partner Accenture. The app enables intelligent indoor navigation within the 64,000 sq m area, and is also integrated with social media capabilities.

“As the first museum in the world dedicated to Southeast Asian modern art, National Gallery Singapore aims to provide a differentiated art experience for visitors to fully explore and appreciate art and its history,” said Suenne Tan, Director, Education and Programmes, National Gallery Singapore. “We crafted activities to give the public many ways and reasons to connect with art, inspiring more to develop a deeper understanding of Singapore and Southeast Asian art and its links with art all around the world.”

National Gallery Singapore, in the restored and transformed former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings – two important heritage buildings of Singapore’s nationhood – is a new visual arts institution which oversees the largest public collection of modern art of Singapore and Southeast Asia. The Gallery is dedicated to collaborative research, education and exhibitions, highlighting the importance of modern art in Southeast Asia in a global context. Executive-produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Steven Michaels, Jonathan Koch, Mark Dowley and Kurt Sayenga, BREAKTHROUGH is about scientific explorers from leading universities and institutions and how their cutting-edge innovations and advancements will change our lives in the future. The series brings to life the stories, people and technology behind these breakthroughs, and show how they are changing our world. Each hour-long episode is directed by a Hollywood visionary.

Breakthroughs covered include:

Fighting Pandemics (directed and narrated by Peter Berg, who may be known for his role as Dr Billy Kronk in Chicago Hope)
Premieres 7 November at 10pm SGT

Berg takes viewers into the world of pioneers scrambling to stop an outbreak and save the world from future plagues. From antibiotics and vaccines to computer programs that predict how viruses will spread, new lifesaving tools will be used to fight a wide range of viruses in the near future, including HIV, influenza, dengue fever, and malaria.

More Than Human (directed and narrated by Paul Giamatti, Golden Globe winner for Barney's Version)
Premieres 14 November at 10pm

Chances are you either are, or you know, a cyborg: a person who is aided or enhanced by embedded technology, such an artificial limbs or pacemakers. But advances in science are taking us beyond replacement parts and into a new realm that is changing the nature of the human body and the human mind.

The fusion of biology and technology is making us better, stronger, faster and smarter. But as the natural and man-made worlds merge, will we become more than human? Watch Trish Aelker at Lockheed Martin Exoskeleton Technologies build exoskeletons that give mere mortals super strength, and Dr Miguel Nicolelis, a brain-machine interfaces expert whose work with the Walk Again Project is giving hope to people with traumatic spine injuries.

Decoding The Brain (directed by Brett Ratner, who also directed the Rush Hour series; narrated by Adrien Brody, who starred in The Pianist)

We now have the tools to explore the hidden reaches of the brain, leading to research that may help those suffering from afflictions such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Meet scientists such as Dr John Schenck, who helped pioneer magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies and was the first person to have his brain imaged by the machine in the early 1980s; Dr Mohamad Koubeissi, a neurologist who developed a groundbreaking way to treat epilepsy; and Dr Steve Ramirez, who is investigating how to implant or erase memories and hopes his work could help people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How Long Can We Live? (directed and narrated by Ron Howard, who also directed Grand Theft Auto and A Beautiful Mind)
Premieres 28 November at 10pm

In recent years, studies of the ageing process have opened up new ways that could help us all live healthier for longer. Some researchers believe the real breakthrough is extending our health span — the period of life spent free of disease. Hear from Laura Deming, who dropped out of MIT at age 14 and now focuses on projects that can expand the human health span, and Dr Brian Kennedy, whose work in the basic biology of ageing is the foundation of much other research.

Energy On the Edge (directed by Akiva Goldsman, an Academy Award winner for A Beautiful Mind; narrated by Jason Bateman of Arrested Development and Horrible Bosses fame)
Premieres 5 December at 10pm

This episode follows innovative alternative energy projects and the people behind them, like the team at the US National Ignition Facility, who are trying to save the world by harnessing the power of controlled fusion.

Water Apocalypse (directed and narrated by Angela Bassett, who portrayed Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It)

Singapore's NUS, NTU make it to QS top 15

The twelfth edition of the QS World University Rankings states that Singapore’s leading universities have made the top 15 for the first time. The National University of Singapore (12th) is the leading Asian institution and Nanyang Technological University (13th) is right behind. Australian National University (19th) also returns to the top 20 while China’s Tsinghua University (25th) is Asia’s third-best university.

Ben Sowter, QS Head of research says: “These latest results reveal more diversity than ever in the distribution of world-class universities at the highest levels. We’re providing prospective students with the richest picture yet.”

A new approach to “citations per faculty”, a measure of research impact, has delivered fairer evaluations for universities with a strong profile in areas with lower research activity, such as arts, humanities and social sciences. Over 70 thousand (76,798) academics and 44,226 employers contributed to the rankings through the QS global surveys. QS also analysed 11.1 million research papers indexed by Elsevier’s Scopus database. Three thousand, five hundred and thirty-nine institutions were considered for inclusion, and 891 ranked.
