K-brand IP protection MoU signed with Shopee

Intellectual property (IP) infringement issues have grown in tandem with the global e-commerce market, which expanded in value from US$2.9 T in 2018 to US$5.8 T in 2023, an average annual growth rate of 14.6%. According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), intellectual property infringement cases through e-commerce increased approximately 2.5x in 2023 compared to 2018. The Asian and Latin American regions showed the highest proportion of counterfeit product distribution. Korean products have become major targets due to their brand value and scarcity.

The Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KOIPA) has been particularly concerned. According to an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report, the scale of counterfeit products infringing Korean companies' IP rights reached approximately US$9.7 B globally as of 2021, equivalent to 1.5% of Korea's total exports. This resulted in Korean companies losing sales of US$6.1 B, and the loss of 13,855 manufacturing jobs.

This has led to work with major e-commerce platforms like Shopee as they play a crucial role in strengthening K-brand protection. KOIPA's Director Kim Yong-seon recently announced that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Shopee's Singapore headquarters on June 24. Building upon the original MOU signed in 2020, this renewed agreement encompasses significantly expanded cooperation to protect Korean brands and sellers in the region, including offline enforcement linkages for fundamental solutions to counterfeit product distribution.

The MOU consists of three major cooperation areas:

Strengthening the response system for intellectual property infringement of Korean brands

Shopee will collaborate with KOIPA to provide easy access for monitoring and reporting of suspected IP infringements involving Korean brands, in accordance with agreed protocols.

Offline enforcement collaboration to block counterfeit product distribution

To overcome the limitations of online anti-counterfeit enforcement and to strengthen efforts to prevent the distribution of counterfeit goods, both parties agree to explore and implement joint response measures when necessary.

Expand educational activities to raise awareness of intellectual property protection

Both organisations plan to jointly conduct education and awareness-raising activities to improve intellectual property protection consciousness among both sellers and consumers.

Kim emphasised: "We are pleased to establish a cooperation system for K-brand protection with Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. We will actively support our companies' overseas expansion and export activities by expanding cooperation with other major global e-commerce platforms.”

“Shopee is proud to renew and strengthen our partnership with KOIPA to better safeguard Korean brands in our region,” said Ian Ho, VP at Shopee.

“As e-commerce continues to grow, it is more important than ever to work closely with trusted partners like KOIPA to enhance IP enforcement and build a secure and trustworthy environment for all users.”

Reconsidering where you stand on digital privacy

2020 marks the 14th Data Protection Day, which is celebrated across the globe. The initiative, dubbed Privacy Day outside of Europe, aims to raise awareness about good practices in data protection and inform people about the risks associated with the illegal mishandling and unfair processing of their personal data.

While everyone agrees that data protection is important, security specialist ESET points out that individuals are becoming increasingly desensitised to current measures to protect data. These are typically a case of pressing “I agree” to websites, devices, and apps accessing personal data.

"It’s easy to understand; we are willing to sacrifice privacy, on some level, for convenience. However, this Data Protection Day is the time to take stock of exactly how, where, and when you are giving up the right to digital privacy, and whether this is a sacrifice you are willing to make," said the company in a statement.

ESET also noted that few people understand what they can do if their data protection rights have been breached, and that the information can be difficult to access. "A good way of finding out if your data has been compromised in a data breach is to head to haveibeenpwned.com, which will let you know if your account has been breached. If it has, it is highly recommended that you update your passwords across all accounts," the company advised.

"Similarly, if you feel like a company is abusing your data, you can lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority, which will investigate and inform you of the outcome of your complaint within three months."

According to ESET, measures for individuals can include creating strong, unique passwords for all accounts; using trusted Wi-Fi networks; backing up and encrypting your data; wiping hard drives that are no longer used; and ensuring that all software is up-to-date.

Businesses can also be impacted by data protection regulation and consumer rights. ESET has developed a 61-page for Dummies ebook featuring 10 keys to effective data protection covering:

  • The data security measures a company needs
  • Compliance with the latest data regulations
  • Make sure a company is a non-target for cybercriminals
  • Minimising the effects of a data breach or loss

Sophos protects servers from ransomware

Sophos, a network and endpoint security provider, has announced that its anti-ransomware CryptoGuard technology is now available with Sophos Server Protection products. With this optimisation, Sophos Server Protection now has signatureless detection capabilities to combat ransomware on servers - similar to Sophos Intercept X for endpoints.

Sophos launched Sophos Intercept X with CryptoGuard in September 2016. It stops the spontaneous encryption of data by ransomware within seconds of detection.

By adding CryptoGuard to server security, Sophos is closing a critical gap by preventing ransomware attacks that could come in through rogue, guest or remote access users or other weaknesses in a company’s network. For example, if a company allows bring-your-own laptops on the network, remote access for employees or is victimised by an insider cyber threat, servers become highly susceptible to ransomware. Additionally, network shares on servers are high-value targets as they contain proprietary financials, personally identifiable information and other key data, and should be protected as such.

“Servers are considered the jackpot for cybercriminals, since they can store confidential corporate and employee information, medical records with social security numbers or private customer documents. It would be devastating for organisations to lose this kind of sensitive data to ransomware,” said Dan Schiappa, Senior VP and GM of Sophos’ Enduser and Network Security Groups.

“Most organisations back up their data, but recovery from a backup is not always easy. Businesses, schools or hospitals do not want the liability, hassle and operational disruption required to restore from a backup. Anti-ransomware technology is a critical layer for the protection and ongoing accessibility of the information that resides on servers."

Oman Air disinfecting plane interiors with Virus-Guard

Oman Air, the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, has adopted Virus-Guard’s disinfectant wipes. Designed for protection against swine flu, H1N1, H7N9, Ebola, Mers and Zika, Oman Air’ staff members now use the wipes to disinfect aircraft galleys, lavatories and door handles.

“We are committed to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for our passengers and employees,” said Miguel Serra, VP of ground operations at Oman Air. “Our partnership with Virus-Guard helps to ensure that we are taking all of the necessary steps and precautions for swift and coordinated action against international health threats.”

In February, Oman Air announced that its leadership was monitoring the Zika virus situation in South America, posting additional information on its website from the World Health Organization and offering refunds and rebooking assistance to pregnant women scheduled to travel to the region.

Oman Air's use of Virus-Guard products is one of several necessary steps the airline is taking to minimise the threat of the Zika virus, as well as reduce the risk of the spread of this and other viruses and bacteria.

Virus-Guard disinfectant wipes are a ready-to-use product that provides long-term efficacy, and is an easy-to-use solution for eradicating germs. The wipes contain benzalkonium chloride, sodium pyrithione and polycondenstaes, a combination commonly used in hospitals and other medical treatment facilities. The wipes do not contain aldehyde or phenol. All Virus-Guard products are, biocompatible, approved for Airbus and Boeing craft, and boast a long-time antimicrobial effect.

“The number of infections by micro-organisms has grown tremendously,” said Alex, founder of Virus-Guard. “We are working diligently with our aviation industry partners to implement infection control measures and protocols. Our goal is to help these industry leaders to quickly adapt in order to continue to make customer safety their top priority.”

As a global partner of the Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula 1 Racing Team, Acronis put its technologies to the test in workloads demanded by the most technologically advanced sport. “Instant access to the massive amounts of data we generate every race is an absolute requirement for our team to win,” said Scuderia Toro Rosso Team’s Principal Franz Tost. “If we lose data even for a few seconds, the race is lost, which is why we rely on Acronis for the most complete backup.”

Acronis True Image 2017 delivers more than 50 new features, including:

Wireless mobile device backup to Windows computers – Back up an unlimited number of iPhones, iPads, and Android mobile devices to your computer at the full speed of your local Wi-Fi network. Recover all content to the same or another device, even if it is just a single photo or contact.

Remote backup management – Protect all your computers and help others with protecting theirs, even if they are far away. Review the data protection status in real-time for any computer or mobile device data via a touch-friendly online dashboard.

Incremental Facebook backup – Automatically back up all your Facebook account content, including photos, videos, contacts, comments, and likes. Users are protected from accidental deletions, hacker attacks, application failures, or social network errors that can erase precious memories.

Archiving to the cloud or external storage devices – Free up disk space by moving large or rarely used files from your Windows or Apple computer to an external drive, network-attached storage (NAS) device, network share, or the Acronis Cloud. Access the archives by using File Explorer, Finder, or a Web browser.

Enhanced NAS – Automatically discover NAS devices available on the local network, preconfiguring them for backup storage, and automatically reconnecting them if they are temporarily unavailable.

Acronis True Image 2017 has many additional new features, such as search-in-local and Cloud backups, encryption for archives, comments for backups, Windows Explorer integration, a refreshed touch-friendly user interface on iOS and Android devices, and much more.

“It's not if your computer will crash, it’s when—and I learned that the hard way,” said Robert Tarver, an Acronis True Image user since 2015. “I was using another vendor’s file and folder backup product when my hard drive crashed. A computer repair technician informed me that only my data files were backed up; not my operating system (OS), program files, and settings. To properly back up, he recommended Acronis. It has since saved not only my computer but my wife’s computer as well. I am very thankful to Acronis for keeping my data safe.”

It's World Backup Day. Is your data safe?

A new global study sponsored by Acronis, a global player in hybrid cloud data protection, reveals a growing understanding about the value of, and attitudes toward, the protection of personal data on computers, mobile phones and tablet devices.

Nearly half of survey respondents have more than four devices in a household to protect and 45% of survey respondents fear losing photos and videos the most. Security and privacy were cited as key requirements for backing up data.

Emerging concerns for personal data protection

The traditional fears of hardware failure and accidental deletion are no longer the sole reasons people fear data loss. Cyberthreats like ransomware, a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system and its data until a sum of money is paid, is a growing threat to individuals and businesses. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI and the nonprofit National White Collar Crime Center in the US, the IC3 received 992 Cr yptoWall-related (ransomware) complaints between April 2014 and June 2015, with victims reporting losses totalling over US$18 million.

According to the Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2015, Singapore suffers from malware attacks in banking ahead of other countries, with 11.6% of surveyed users targeted at least once by banking trojans throughout the year. Backup is one effective recovery option for CryptoWall and malware-related attacks.

The data protection survey, conducted by Acronis with Google Consumer Surveys, focused on understanding data protection behaviour. Key findings from the more than 4,000 individuals include:

·       The most important data protection features were security (cited by 30% of respondents), ease-of-use at 36%, and privacy at 26%.

·       Nearly half (46%) have more than four devices (computers, laptops, smart phones) in their homes.

·       Currently, 38% back up to external drives and 30% back up to the cloud.

·       58% percent of consumers back up at night and 27% perform backups while watching TV.

A new category of “data protectors”

With the median household having at least four devices, an emerging trend of users called “family data protectors” is also gaining traction. The sheer growth of data captured in mobile pictures and videos, music files, and scanned family documents means the family data protector ensures the immediate and extended family is prepared for, and protected against, data loss.

“Data loss via hardware failure, file deletion, and ransomware are factors most people don’t think about on a daily basis, but when they do occur the results are devastating,” said Steve Goh, Vice President and GM of Sales, APAC & EMM of Acronis. “Our survey results illustrate a growing general recognition of the value of data stored on family computers and devices, especially given the price people are willing to pay for their data. We hope that this new information, presented on World Backup Day, will encourage even more people to back up their data and protect their personal information.”

Three steps to improve data protection

For anyone, but especially for family data protectors, keeping digital memories and fiduciary documents safe, secure and private, is a responsibility that can be easy and inexpensive to exercise. Below are some tips:

1.      Always have a backup of a family’s critical data, documents, pictures and videos.

2.      Keep your operating systems on the most up-to-date version. Those security patches and software updates are important

3.      Be mindful of suspicious emails or clicking on links sent by unknown sources, it could be a phishing scheme or ransomware.

Beware, Superman is toxic

Superman is a huge online threat. That's what McAfee says in a blog post. The ubiquity of superheroes outside of the comic books means that hackers and scammers can use them for cybercrime, the company said.

The company has released survey results for the Most Toxic Superheroes using McAfee SiteAdvisor site ratings, and the Man of Steel topped the list. The study determined that searching 'Superman', 'Superman and free torrent download', 'Superman and watch', 'Superman and free app', and 'Superman and online', yields a 16.5% chance of landing on a website that has tested positive for online threats, such as spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware.

Other superheroes also yield high chances of falling victim to malware, including Thor, WonderWoman, Azuaman, and Wolverine.

McAfee recommends the following to stay safe:

Be suspicious: If a search turns up a link to free content or too-good-to-be-true offers, be wary
Double-check the web address: Look for misspellings or other clues that the site you are going to may not be safe (for more on this, read the McAfee blog on typosquatting)
Search safely: Use a web safety advisor, such as McAfee SiteAdvisor that displays a red, yellow, or green ratings in search results, alerting you to potential risky sites before you click on them
Protect yourself: Use comprehensive security software on all your devices, like McAfee LiveSafe service, to protect yourself against the latest threats

Gary McIlraith, CEO of NetNames said: "We are seeing growth in the number, scale and global reach of brands domiciled in the Southeast Asia region and we believe that there will be an increasing demand from corporates in the region for the comprehensive and integrated set of online brand protection services that NetNames provides to many large companies in Europe and the US."

In addition, companies in Singapore and Australia will also have access to NetNames' global domain name registration platform, enabling them to work with a single partner to register and manage domain names with direct accreditation in virtually every domain registry worldwide.

The institute created 54 samples, targeting seven different vulnerabilities, combined with different obfuscation and evasion options as well as different payloads to simulate a wide variety of possible malware attacks. Ten antivirus solutions were tested, including Qihoo 360, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, Eset, Kaspersky, and Norton.

The average block rate among the solutions evaluated was 73.5%. Qihoo 360 and Norton achieved a 100% block rate, detecting/blocking all 54 attacks, while Tencent PC Manager was ranked at the bottom with an 18.5% block rate.

Microsoft ended support of the Windows XP operating system on April 8, but there are still Windows XP PCs in use. According to Qihoo 360, nearly 20% of PC users are still using Windows XP in China.
