Asia’s sustainable urban and business space solutions, provider, Ascendas-Singbridge Group, has partnered intelligent transportation solutions provider Neuron Mobility to launch a six-month personal mobility devices (PMD) sharing trial at Singapore Science Park 1. This is part of the group’s broader efforts to provide tenants, staff and visitors of Singapore Science Park 1 with greater accessibility and convenience within the park.

From 14 June to 13 December 2017, 50 GPS-enabled e-scooters and 20 bicycles will be available for rent from six parking zones situated in Singapore Science Park 1, at Ascent, The Franklin, CINTECH I and IV, 3Cs (The Chadwick, Curie and Cavendish) and opposite Oasis building. For a small fee, tenants, staff, and visitors to Singapore Science Park 1 will be able to able to rent an e-scooter or bicycle, ride it to their destination, then return it to a parking zone.

Manohar Khiatani, Deputy Group CEO of Ascendas-Singbridge said: “Our tenants will now have an efficient, alternative mode of transport to work, meetings, lunch or other social appointments in and around the Park. The trial will allow us to gauge receptivity to the scheme and monitor usage so that we can improve intermodal connectivity and point-to-point travel within Singapore Science Park 1.”

The PMD sharing scheme is expected to supplement the shuttle bus services and public transport serving Singapore Science Park 1 for ad-hoc, short-distance travel. Apart from location tracking to enable proper use of its devices, Neuron’s intelligent transport solution will monitor travel patterns and frequencies. Backed by international patents, this proprietary system leverages different sensors in Internet of things (IoT) technologies to deliver a differentiated user experience through advanced analytics and insights.

Zachary Wang, CEO of Neuron Mobility, noted that Singapore Science Park 1 is an excellent testbed location. He said: “To be a truly viable large-scale firstand-last-mile solution, it is more than just providing reliable personal mobility devices. It is about being equipped to manage and optimise the entire network, which we pride ourselves in."

Once the six-month trial concludes, AscendasSingbridge will undertake a detailed review of the scheme as it considers the next rollout phase.

Microsoft Surface family grows in popularity

Source: Microsoft. The Surface family.
Source: Microsoft. The Surface family.

From Surface Pro, to Surface Book, to Surface Studio, to Surface Hub, the Surface family is enjoying its "best holiday ever', says Brian Hall, CVP, Microsoft Devices Marketing, wrote in a blog post. November was the best month ever for consumer Surface sales, Hall said.

The Surface Studio was introduced in October, and 10+ million people have viewed the Surface Studio launch video since, Hall noted. He announced that the Surface Studio is now shipping.

Microsoft’s trade-in programme for Surfaces in exchange for MacBooks is at its best ever, which Hall attributed to "the combination of excitement for the innovation of Surface coupled with the disappointment of the new MacBook Pro – especially among professionals".

In Asia Pacific, Surface Book with Performance Base will go on sale in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Japan early next quarter, and is now available in Australia and New Zealand, Hall added. The Surface Book with Performance Base laptop, also introduced earlier in the year, has twice the graphics power and 30% more battery than the previous model.

By the end of 2016, nine months since launch, Surface Hubs will have shipped to over 2,000 customers in 24 markets, Hall disclosed. "The average deal size we see in the pipeline is approximately 50 units, but we’ve seen orders as large as 1,500 units to a large car manufacturer. This makes our team so, so proud," Hall said in the post.

Surface Hub production has been ramped up and it is available worldwide. "To help meet the demand for Surface Hub, and to provide a great experience for customers, we’re adding more value-added partners who will resell Surface and provide five-star service to our customers," Hall promised.

A Surface Hub Try-and-Buy Program is rolling out as well, where selected resellers will provide customers Hubs for 30 days before they commit to purchasing a large set of devices. The This Asia Pacific launch date is not yet known, however.

"In a February 2016 study, Forrester estimated that the ROI of integrating a Surface Hub into an organisation was 138%. They measured meeting time saved per meeting to be 15 to 23 minutes and sales as a result of the Surface Hub were up 20% with a payback period (of) nine months. We believe our momentum in just nine months proves the study correct, and we’ve added some features that our customers have asked for most upgrade executive offices and conferences rooms around the world – with the power of a software-driven product," Hall said.

Other new Surface Hub capabilities announced after customer feedback and observing how customers use the Surface Hub include:

+Inking support across Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
+Saving and recalling Whiteboards directly through OneDrive.
+Support for more third party peripherals like BiAmp TesireForte CI, Jabra 810, Logitech PTZ Pro and Polycom CX5100.
+Preloaded PowerBI, OneDrive, and Photos apps.

Intel Security shares list of the most hackable holiday gifts

· Survey reveals that 80% of consumers will likely shop online this year

· While 85% of consumers start using connected devices within the first day of receiving it, only 45% claim they take the proper security measures

· Consumers know it’s important to secure their devices, but nearly half (46%) are uncertain whether they are taking the proper security steps to do so

Intel Security has announced its second annual McAfee Most Hackable Holiday Gifts list to identify potential security risks associated with hot-ticket items this holiday season. The No. 1 most hackable gift category included laptops and PCs, followed by smartphones and tablets, media players and streaming sticks, smart home automation devices and apps, and finally, drones.

A recent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that crippled websites like Twitter, Reddit and Spotify was carried out by a botnet made up of unsecured webcams and other Internet of things (IoT) devices, and crippled many popular websites connected to the Dyn domain. Consumers can help fight these attacks by ensuring that their devices are updated and patched. Intel Security stresses that users have to understand the risks associated with even the most unassuming of devices.

“Unsurprisingly, connected devices remain high on holiday wish lists this year. What is alarming is that consumers remain unaware of what behaviours pose a security risk when it comes to new devices,” said Gary Davis, Chief Consumer Security Evangelist at Intel Security. “Consumers are often eager to use their new gadget as soon as they get it and forgo ensuring that their device is properly secured. Cybercriminals could use this lack of attention as an inroad to gather personal consumer data, exposing consumers to malware or identity theft or even use unsecured devices to launch DDoS attacks as in the recent Dyn attack.”

To accompany the list, Intel Security conducted a survey to identify the risky behaviours consumers are engaging in during the holiday season. While a majority of consumers are aware of the vulnerabilities in older connected devices like laptops (73%), mobile phones (70%) and tablets (69%), they lack awareness about the potential risks associated with emerging connected devices, such as drones (20%), children’s toys (21%), virtual reality technology (18%), and pet gifts (11%).

The year’s most hackable holiday gifts include:

1. Laptops and PCs – malicious apps targeting PCs are unfortunately common, and are not just limited to Windows-based devices.

2. Smartphones and tablets – Survey results revealed that 64% of consumers plan to purchase either a smartphone or tablet this holiday season. Just like PCs and laptops, malware could result in personal and financial information being stolen.

3. Media players and streaming sticks – users can unknowingly invite a cybercriminal into their living room by failing to update their device.

4. Smart home automation devices and apps – Today’s connected home devices and apps give users the power to control their homes from their smartphone. Unfortunately, hackers have demonstrated techniques that could be used to compromise Bluetooth powered door locks and other home automation devices.

5. Drones – Drone sales are expected to grow to more than US$20 billion by 2022. They can provide unique perspectives when it comes to shooting video and photos. However, not properly securing the device could allow hackers to disrupt the GPS signal, or hijack the drone through its smartphone app.

While 75% of consumers believe it is very important to secure their online identities and connected devices, nearly half are uncertain if they are taking the proper security steps. To stay protected for a happier and safer holiday season, Intel Security has the following tips:

· Secure your device. Make sure you have comprehensive security software installed.

· Only use secure Wi-Fi. Using devices such as smart home appliances on public Wi-Fi could leave users open to risk.

· Keep software is up-to-date. Apply patches as they are released from the manufacturer so that the device is protected from the latest known threats.

· Use a strong password or PIN. If the device supports it, use multifactor authentication (MFA) as it can include factors like a trusted device, your face, fingerprint, etc. to make your login more secure.

· Check before you click. Be suspicious of links from people you do not know and always use Internet security software to stay protected. Hover over the link to find a full URL of the link’s destination in the lower corner of the browser.

Blanket flight ban for the Samsung Note7, owners currently overseas not addressed

Airlines in Asia Pacific and the Middle East are following the lead of the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), which issued an emergency order to ban all Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone devices from air transportation in the US on October 14 (October 15 Singapore time), with the ban taking effect on October 15 at noon eastern time (midnight October 16 Singapore time).

“We recognise that banning these phones from airlines will inconvenience some passengers, but the safety of all those aboard an aircraft must take priority,” said US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “We are taking this additional step because even one fire incident inflight poses a high risk of severe personal injury and puts many lives at risk.”

“The fire hazard with the original Note7 and with the replacement Note7 is simply too great for anyone to risk it and not respond to this official recall,” said US Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliot Kaye. “I would like to remind consumers once again to take advantage of the remedies offered, including a full refund.  It’s the right thing to do and the safest thing to do.”

The DOT has also considered the possibility of travellers evading the ban by packing their phone in checked luggage, stating that "anyone violating the ban may be subject to criminal prosecution in addition to fines", paving the way for civil aviation authorities and airlines in other countries to do the same.

Airlines in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East have begun announcing their own bans on the Samsung Note7 on flights, with many of the bans taking effect almost immediately. Etihad has just announced its ban on Facebook, saying:

"Following the global recall by Samsung of its Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, Etihad Airways is enforcing a total ban on these devices on board its aircraft, as some phones have been installed with faulty lithium batteries, which present a risk of combustion and fire.

"Guest(s) must not carry these smartphones in their checked-in baggage, in cabin baggage, or on their person.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused. However, the safety and security of our passengers and staff is of the utmost importance."

Singapore Airlines has banned the Samsung Note7 on all its flights as of 16 October. A statement on its Facebook page reads:

"In view of the ban of the Galaxy Note 7 device by the US Department of Transportation, Singapore Airlines wishes to inform customers that the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone will be prohibited from being brought on board all our flights on person, in carry-on baggage or checked-in baggage with effect from 16 October, 0000hrs (Singapore Time).

"The smartphone also cannot be shipped as air cargo. Anyone found in possession of the device will be denied boarding."

According to comments on the Facebook post, some passengers had previously been assured that they would be allowed to board a return flight with the device.

Qantas had similarly allowed passengers to board with the device turned off, but also announced a total ban on the Note7 for both Qantas and Jetstar customers on the 15th. A statement on its Facebook page reads:

"Qantas and Jetstar customers are advised that the carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices on-board is prohibited on ALL FLIGHTS effective 12:01am (AEDT) Sunday 16 October 2016. This is due to concerns regarding potential fire risk from the device's battery after a number of incidents worldwide, and follows a ban put in place by regulators overseas. The ban applies to devices being carried onto the aircraft, in carry on baggage as well as check-in luggage. Other Samsung devices are not affected.

"Note: this is updated advice from the previous Qantas Group policy, which allowed carriage of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 provided it was turned off. This restriction has now been broadened to a total ban."

The unprecedented move follows reports that both the originally recalled and the replacement Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices can generate heat and catch fire even when they are powered off. A statement on Samsung's Singapore site says that Samsung and carriers are working to communicate the US Department of Transportation' new order to ban all Galaxy Note7 devices in carry-on and checked baggage on flights.

"We have encouraged airlines to issue similar communications directly to their passengers. Any Galaxy Note7 owner who will be travelling by flight and require a courtesy device can obtain one from the Samsung Customer Service Centre at Westgate or the Samsung Experience Store at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 (departure/transit lounge). Consumers can contact us at 1800-SAMSUNG (7267864) for further assistance. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused and are working hard to expedite the exchange/refund programme in Singapore," Samsung Singapore said in the statement, which does not address the case of owners who were allowed to fly with the Note7, but who might not be able to return with it.

On October 14 Samsung Electronics Singapore announced details of the exchange and refund options for Galaxy Note7 customers and further said that Samsung has stopped sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7, and has consequently decided to stop production.

"Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note7 should power down and stop using the device immediately, and take advantage of the exchange and refund options, regardless if they purchased their original device from telecommunication operators, consumer electronics stores, authorised retailers, Samsung Official Store at Lazada.sg or Samsung Experience Stores," the company advised in a statement online.

"We are deeply sorry for the disappointment and frustration the Galaxy Note7 issue may have caused our customers and partners. Our focus now is to reduce further inconvenience to our customers who have trusted and waited for the Galaxy Note7," said Eugene Goh, Vice President, IT & Mobile, Samsung Electronics Singapore.

Galaxy Note7 customers can choose to either exchange their device for a Galaxy S7 edge 4G+, and receive cash and other benefits which will be confirmed shortly, or to receive a refund.

Beginning 26 October 2016, Samsung has asked Galaxy Note7 customers to visit www.samsung.com/sg/note7exchange to select their preference for exchange or refund, and provide their details for a free home delivery, offered regardless whether the Galaxy Note7 customer chooses an exchange or a refund.

Exchange customers can select their preferred colour for the Galaxy S7 edge 4G+, subject to availability. Samsung Concierge customers who opt for exchange will have their Samsung Concierge transferred to the Galaxy S7 edge 4G+ and those who opt for a refund on their Galaxy Note7 will have their Samsung Concierge cost of S$38 refunded.

Customers will need to provide the following details when logging in to arrange for an exchange or a refund.
1) Full name as per bank account
2) NRIC or FIN number
3) Mobile contact
4) Email address
5) Home delivery address

All Galaxy Note7 customers are required to back up their data using Samsung Smart Switch, delete any data or other personal material stored in the device, and reset their device ahead of the home delivery. Customers will receive a cheque for the amount due to them, depending on their selection of the exchange or refund option, in exchange for the Galaxy Note7 device to be returned.

The company is working out the resolution for Galaxy Note7 customers with Samsung original Galaxy Note7 accessories and details will be announced soon.

Samsung recalls Galaxy Note7 devices - again

Source: Samsung Singapore website.
Source: Samsung Singapore website.
A message on the Samsung US home page requests all Samsung Galaxy Note7 owners - with the original device or the replacement device - to power it down and contact their retailer or carrier while it investigates at least three media reports in the US of the replacement device overheating and catching fire.

At the time of writing, typing 'Samsung.com' for the author into the browser defaults geographically to the Samsung Singapore site,  which does mention the Galaxy Note7 product recall, but does not  carry this updated message as yet.

"The Galaxy Note7 Exchange Programme has ended. We thank you for your patience and support.
If you have yet to replace your Galaxy Note7, please contact 1800-SAMSUNG (7267864) for an appointment to exchange your device via home delivery or self-collection at Samsung Customer Service Centre @ Westgate #03-01 between 8 Oct to 6 Nov 2016," reads the statement on the Singapore site. Contacting all of its retail partners around the world and working out the new logistics is bound to take some time, however.

The statement updated October 10 on the Samsung US sote states:

"Samsung is working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note7. While the investigation is taking place, Samsung is asking all carrier and retail partners here and around the globe to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7. Since the affected devices can overheat and pose a safety risk, we are asking consumers with an original Galaxy Note7 or a replacement Galaxy Note7 to power it down and contact the carrier or retail outlet where you purchased your Galaxy Note7."

According to the update, Galaxy Note7 owners may:
  1. Exchange your their Galaxy Note7 for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and replacement of any Galaxy Note7 specific accessories with a refund of the price difference between devices; or
  2. Contact their point of purchase to obtain a full refund.
US customers who exchange a Note7 device will also receive a US$25 gift card, in-store credit, in-store accessory credit or bill credit from select carrier retail outlets.

The announcement is a blow to the company, which had been banking on Note7 sales to boost revenues and has already undergone an earlier replacement exercise involving as many as 2.5 million devices worldwide, according to media reports.  The company had been lauded for acting quickly when concerns about the original Note7 surfaced - suffering continued problems with the device is not likely to help its credibility, however.

Note: This author owns a Galaxy S6, so has a vested interest in whether her next phone upgrade will still be to another Samsung device.
