Taobao Malaysia is ushering in its first-ever sales campaign dedicated to the Ramadhan and Raya season. Running throughout March, the month-long campaign features promotions, daily free shipping vouchers, and curated festive essentials.

Following the successful introduction of its English interface in September last year, Taobao Malaysia continues its commitment to making the platform more accessible to local users with tailored shopping solutions and promotions via the Raya campaign.

Jess Lew, Country Head of Taobao Malaysia said: "We are thrilled to celebrate one of our country's biggest festive moments together with our first-ever Raya campaign. We have prepared an abundance of promotions to make it easier and more rewarding for our customers to shop for their festive needs. With the successful implementation of the English interface, we can further enhance the shopping experience, ensuring that everyone can easily access the Taobao platform and shop effortlessly."

Serikan Rumah untuk Raya & Balik Kampung Essentials runs from 9 to 22 March. There will be discounts on décor, furniture, lighting, carpets and travel essentials like suitcases.

The Last Call Raya Sale will be held from 23 to 31 March.

On top of these shoppers have the chance to grab a limited-time offer, and an RMB35 voucher (equivalent to RM21) to enjoy free shipping with no minimum spend required during this promotion period. For first-time Taobao shoppers, deals for as low as RMB1 (equivalent to RM0.62) are up for grabs.

Taobao Malaysia is also introducing the Spend & Win Duit Raya promotion. Shoppers stand a chance to win up to RMB50 (equivalent to RM30) in duit Raya every Wednesday in March at 12 pm when they make a purchase, with 100 winners per day. The duit Raya will be in the form of a cashback amount, and equivalent to the amount shoppers spend, capped at RMB50 (equivalent to RM30).

"We hope to build a more holistic shopping environment with the promise of delivering our biggest promotion in Malaysia ever. We believe Malaysians will be able to save more and enjoy more this festive season," said Lew.

From 0000 to 2359, consumers will get access to product deals ranging from branded items to new arrivals and unique finds.

The one-day mega sale offers 10 million deals your heart desires, a nod to Lazada’s brand refresh unveiled in June. The Mid-Year Festival is the e-commerce leader’s first sale event that brings to life its new brand idea Go Where Your Heart Beats.

The addition of a new mega sale day to Lazada’s shopping event calendar this year is designed to bring customers and sellers more opportunities to ignite new possibilities. To encourage more shoppers to follow their hearts, Lazada is offering attractive benefits such as free shipping with participating sellers as well as millions of Lazada vouchers to be given away throughout the day.

“More than just a shopping platform, Lazada strives to be an everyday lifestyle destination for consumers in Southeast Asia. Introducing our new Mid-Year Festival during a traditionally quieter shopping season presents more chances in a year for us to bring excitement to shoppers and provide our sellers more opportunities to boost their performance,” said Jing Yin, President of Lazada Group.

As part of Lazada’s new Mid-Year Festival, the company is furthering its shoppertainment strategy with its first region-wide livestreamed gameshow across six countries. GUESS IT is a 30-minute in-app show that combines a gameshow concept with professionally-generated livestreamed content. It involves an entertaining local personality playing host and giving away clues for viewers to guess the price of products.

A total of 672 GUESS IT episodes across the region will feature over 4,000 items from a variety of sellers, with a focus on newly-launched and special edition products. The livestreamed gameshow alone has resulted in 68,000 new livestreaming account followers in the Philippines, 10 times the number of viewers per average livestream session in Thailand, and double the number per average livestream session in Singapore to date.

“Our professionally-generated GUESS IT content offers a new way to feature brands and sellers, while increasing in-app consumer dwell time and purchase,” said Mary Zhou, CMO of Lazada Group.

Lazada’s LazGames also features strongly in the Mid-Year Festival with the introduction of new features including a leaderboard function to track. As part of the Mid-Year Festival, Lazada has also made it possible for the first time for brands to customise LazGames with their own logo and products.

welcome remarks at GMS 2018.
Held for the second year, INSKEN’s (Institut Keusahawanan Negara's) annual Global Marketing Summit (GMS) aims to help create game changers in the local entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Malaysia's YB Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof said, “Significant attention continues to be placed on promoting the growth on entrepreneurs and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, specifically for B40s and M40s*. The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development (MED) will utilise the allocated budget to develop a focused and inclusive entrepreneur development program to be implemented in 2019.

“Our mission is to generate entrepreneurs with integrity and competitiveness in the global market. This is to encourage entrepreneurship in Malaysia Baharu** particularly among the low-income groups across all segments of the society.”

INSKEN, the lead agency for National Entrepreneurship Development and the National Entrepreneurship Resource Centre, staged the first GMS last year to address the global challenges facing homegrown businesses, and again this year for local entrepreneurs keen to up their game.

“Over the years, a myriad of entrepreneurship programmes and skill enhancements have been undertaken to nurture and groom individuals and companies to reach business perfection. As the leading agency for National Entrepreneurship Development under the purview of Ministry of Entrepreneur Development, it is INSKEN’s responsibility to address this problem. Thus, the idea of Global Marketing Summit was born,” said Firdaus Azharuddin, CEO, INSKEN.

He said the GMS 2018 was focused on creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs to meet and learn from influential speakers. Sessions at the event featured Rob Craven, Sales Advisor for Microsoft and Airbus; Vinita Bali, former Marketing Director for Coca-Cola and Cadbury; Ashraf Sinclair, actor and owner of TGI Fridays Indonesia, and Neelofa, founder of Naelofar Hijab.

INSKEN aims to develop highly knowledgeable, resilient and capable movers and shakers who embrace the tech-driven, app-enabled and disruptive environment that entrepreneurs operate in today, without sacrificing their sense of humanity and fair play. It became an agency under MED in July 2018.

Since 2015, INSKEN has successfully trained 28,330 local entrepreneurs via 1,109 entrepreneurship development training programmes held throughout Malaysia. These programmes are divided into several categories to empower different tiers of entrepreneurs, from public outreach to startup programmes, scale-up programmes, and ecosystem enhancement. By the end of 2017, INSKEN noted that 325 out of 500 companies that undertook its training programmes had successfully increased their revenue by 10%.

Lazada's 11.11 Shopping Festival promises more fun all round

This year’s Lazada 11.11 Shopping Festival is already setting new records - over 50 million deals will be offered, against last year’s record 27 million. More than 400,000 sellers and brands will participate in this year’s event, nearly three times more than last year.

The annual event by Lazada, a major online shopping and selling platform in the region, is aimed at showcasing the convenience and value of online shopping, and allowing shoppers to take advantage of “out-of-this-world” prices on brands and products. For 24 hours starting midnight of November 11, shoppers in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam can enjoy blockbuster deals from LazMall and local sellers on Lazada marketplace, including discounts of up to 90% on more than 1 million items during the 24-hour shopping spree.

In what has become a uniquely Lazada experience, shoppers can expect exciting games while collecting discount and promotion vouchers in addition to shopping for their favourite brands. From November 1, shoppers can start collecting promotion vouchers through popular games such as SlashIt and ShakeIt in the run-up to the Lazada 11.11 Shopping Festival.

This year, Lazada will be introducing a new game as part of the 11.11 Shopping Festival. Wonderland is an interactive map that allows shoppers to discover 11.11 deals from various brands as well as win special Lazada or store vouchers for their purchases while they indulge in the biggest one-day sale. Some of the brands and sellers that are participating in Wonderland include L'Oréal, Laneige and Huawei.

“Bargain-hunters are also fun-seekers. Shopping doesn’t have to be boring and our business is not just about offering discounts or a one-off deal. So we are introducing games for shoppers to have some fun while browsing, buying and getting discounts – and they are loving it. Our focus is about building a great shopping experience. It’s the heart to everything we do and what makes an e-commerce operation vibrant,” said Jing Yin, Co-president, Commercial, Lazada Group.

This year, Lazada is staging two gala TV shows in Malaysia and Thailand, where local celebrities and influencers will participate and put fans to the test through games. During the Super Show, contestants stand a chance to walk away with mega giveaways such as the VW Beetle as well as return air tickets to Paris, France.

In total, 1,111 celebrities and influencers across Southeast Asia will come together with their fans to celebrate the Lazada 11.11 Shopping Festival and build a mega online shopping community through live-streaming sessions, Facebook and Instagram posts. For the first time, Lazada is featuring its own Lazada playlist on Spotify, so that consumers can shop while listening to their favourite tunes.

To prepare for the year-end shopping season and its largest sale event, Lazada launched its inaugural 9.9 sale on September 9, where over 11 million customers shopped on Lazada’s app in just 24 hours. Lazada has also been working with brands and sellers over the last three months to provide seller workshops and brand campaigns for businesses to better engage with customers, and to refine the Lazada app for a smoother and more seamless shopping experience.

“Our brands and sellers want go beyond transactions. They are all fired up to create their own universe in the ecommerce world, showcase their biggest and best deals to our shoppers during this one-day only shopping marathon and provide the most fun and engaging experience on Lazada,” said Jing.

Launched in 2012, Lazada is the No. 1 online shopping and selling destination in Southeast Asia –present in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. With 350 million SKUs available, Lazada offers the widest range of products in categories from beauty, fashion, and consumer electronics to household goods, toys, sports equipment and groceries. The company maintains its own first- and last-mile delivery arm supported by approximately 100 logistics partners.

Lazada Group is majority owned by Alibaba Group Holding, which reinvented 11.11 as a day to shop. For the first time, Lazada’s participation in the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival is in conjunction with other Alibaba Group platforms including Taobao and Tmall. As the 10th anniversary celebration of 11.11 by the whole of the Alibaba Group, this year's 11.11 is set to be the largest ever yet for consumers worldwide.

On top of more than RMB10 billion in daily hongbao giveaways and shop coupons for select categories up for grabs for all Taobao and Tmall users, there will also be even more promotional offers such as promo codes and free shipping deals on selected items.

In a media briefing held in conjunction with the launch of Lazada’s 11.11 Shopping Festival the Lazada Group pledged to help 8 million e-commerce entrepreneurs as well as small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Southeast Asia to thrive by 2030. The company also announced its commitment to create an inclusive and sustainable e-commerce ecosystem in the region.

The e-commerce platform said it will assist SMEs to digitise their businesses and gain better access to Internet-savvy and mobile consumers; make it easier for sellers to create their own brands on Lazada; while leveraging the company’s logistics network to facilitate the transfer of goods.

At the opening speech of a panel discussion hosted by Lazada on the state of e-commerce in Southeast Asia, Lucy Peng, Executive Chairwoman and CEO, Lazada Group, said: “Having overcome the early challenges of building up the business and industry in a nascent landscape, we now want to lead our ecosystem through the era of robust digital transformation.

"Our focus is on creating a trusted platform connecting sellers to the Southeast Asian consumers. By enabling sellers with our technology and logistics capabilities, we want to help sellers flourish, to become sustainable businesses that will contribute to Southeast Asia economic growth in the long run.”

The panel comprised S. Iswaran, Singapore Minister for Communications & Information, Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations; Pierre Poignant, Executive President, Lazada Group; Simon Baptist, Global Chief Economist and MD, Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) in Asia; and media personality Anita Kapoor.

Panelists discussed SMEs’ e-commerce expertise and access to local consumers. To help sellers reach more customers, Lazada has developed tools, training and other initiatives that enable sellers of all sizes to attract, engage and convert more consumers into sales.

That said, Lazada aspires to do more. “(The) new generation of sellers no longer view e-commerce as a 'good-to-have', but a necessity in order to drive success. And e-commerce players like Lazada can be strategic partners to sellers who are committed to their professional and business growth. Their thriving businesses will boost the ecosystem,” said Poignant.

On cross-border trade, another common challenge faced by SMEs raised at the panel, Baptist said, “Singapore has led the way in actively pursuing an agenda for open trade borders. However, there are still challenges for SMEs, especially in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, due to a lack of access to financial and support services, as well as a need to develop capacity in e-payments and e-commerce."

Faced with limited fulfilment players, a small and fragmented transportation sector, as well as vastly different infrastructure landscapes, e-commerce players in Southeast Asia typically struggle with logistics, to the point where they might not survive.

“Our research showed that logistics is a challenge, particularly in archipelagos like Indonesia and the Philippines. Road networks, as well as the retail and distribution network, came up as higher-risk areas for e-commerce firms,” said Baptist.

Panellists identified data and technology as the two key factors that will dynamically evolve the customer experience for online shoppers, due to Southeast Asia’s heterogeneity. E-commerce businesses that can leverage data to navigate specific local consumer tastes and direct consumers to take desired actions are well-poised to succeed.

“By allowing SMEs to tap into Lazada’s logistics network to facilitate the transfer of goods across countries, businesses will be able to deliver to customers anywhere,” said Poignant.

“Through our technology powered by data and insights, Lazada enables small businesses to connect with their shoppers through a trusted platform, providing them the opportunity to build their businesses and tap into the vast potential that Southeast Asia presents.”

The e-commerce sector also presents tremendous opportunity for local talents and communities. In particular, the flexibility of maintaining an e-commerce business has attracted many female entrepreneurs to start businesses while taking care of their families at home.

“When you consider how female shoppers will be key demand drivers as ASEAN economies develop, it makes business sense for large e-commerce players to cultivate female entrepreneurship, particularly in certain e-commerce categories, like cosmetics and children’s products, that will be fuelled by female-driven growth,” said Baptist.

“Women play a significant role in the digital economy, and an inclusive e-commerce ecosystem is one that creates an empowering environment for women entrepreneurs. In supporting the local female community, Lazada has rolled out a few initiatives. For instance, our Mompreneurs programme provides stay-at-home mothers with free training and assistance, so they are equipped to run an online store while juggling family responsibilities. The programme is currently available in the Philippines, and we are looking to expand this initiative to other markets in Southeast Asia,” said Poignant.

11 things about 11.11

Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, to kick off on November 11, is already brimming with pre-launch bells and whistles. Here are 11 things shoppers should know:

Artificial intelligence (AI)-supported multi-language tools

To help global shoppers enjoy the upcoming Festival, Alibaba has developed an AI translation tool that helps remove potential language barriers between sellers and buyers.

The online chat room tool, launched on Lazada last week, supports instant translation between English and Thai, English and Vietnamese, and English and Indonesian.

AliExpress, Alibaba’s global online retail platform, also offers an AI translation tool that links English speakers with those who speak Chinese, Russian, Spanish, French, Arabic and Turkish.

AI chatbot

Over 800,000 merchants on Taobao and Tmall will deploy Dian Xiaomi, an AI-powered customer-service chatbot, to handle customer inquiries during the festival.

AI video editing

Alibaba Wood, an AI video-editing tool for brands to generate short videos about their products, will be available to some merchants during the Festival. The editing tool can pull key text and images from the product page to quickly create a 20-second promotional video.

The visuals are matched to the rhythm and flow of background music, chosen by an algorithm that factors in human emotions to arouse shoppers’ interest. The tool is expected to help small merchants significantly save on the cost of promotions.

The largest smart warehouse in China

The system will also plan the best routes for the AGVs so that they avoid collisions and intelligently distribute parcels. This will allow 50% more orders to be fulfilled by the warehouse compared with a traditional facility over the same time period.

Malaysia shoppers diversifying in what they buy online

In the Ramadhan and Raya period of 2017, 11street predicts:

· A 50% increase in online sales on its platform;

· Malaysians will head online to shop for electronics, home gadgets and clothing apparels to prepare for Hari Raya;
· More Malaysians will purchase buka puasa e-vouchers online, and in preparation to balik kampung, buy more car services and road safety-related items.

11street, one of the largest online marketplaces in Malaysia, has revealed that in preparation for the Ramadhan and upcoming Raya (Eid) festival celebrations, more Malaysian consumers will explore buying new items online, such as e-vouchers and groceries, in addition to shopping online solely for items such as clothing and electronics.

Hoseok Kim, CEO, 11street says: “Malaysian shoppers keep surprising us. During the Ramadhan and Raya period from 2015 to 2016, we have experienced more than 2.5 times uplift in overall online sales. 11street projects that online sales will continue upward by at least 50% throughout the Ramadhan and Raya periods this year, thanks to our customers’ evolving shopping patterns.”

Malaysians will continue to shop for sought-after items online, such as electronics, home gadgets and clothing apparels as they prepare for Hari Raya, 11street said. According to 11street’s findings, there was a significant increase in the purchase of e-vouchers in 2016 as there are now more options in the category. Leading to that, the search for food and beverage e-vouchers surged to more than 1.2 million during Ramadhan last year.

Kim said: “This year, we expect consumers to purchase more of e-vouchers especially for buka puasa (iftar) buffets, encouraged by the fact that more five-star establishments and restaurants have hopped aboard 11street to offer their delectable spreads. We are constantly evolving to move faster than current online shopping trends, as you can see from our vast offerings. As we amplify our offerings and make online shopping more secure, we see consumers’ confidence in us improving, through the purchase of motorcycles on our platform!”

As the Hari Raya holiday period approaches, 11street also anticipates that Malaysians’ search for car services and road safety-related items to multiply rapidly as they prepare to balik kampung. Since its inception in 2015, 11street has witnessed at least a threefold increase in both searches and online sales for baby car seats and car maintenance packages.

The online marketplace notes that these trends are driven by the lower prices found online to combat rising cost of living, and also the convenience of online shopping coupled with the abundance in variety.

The observations were made in conjunction with the launch of 11street's new campaign. "It is endearing to live in multicultural Malaysia, as everybody celebrates all festivities here. 11street is excited to announce our latest campaign – Gila-Gila Raya – with a host of irresistible deals with shocking promotion discounts for every avid shopping shopper out there!”

On till 23 July, 11street's Gila Gila Raya campaign has promotion pages in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Irresistible deals on popular items, key brands and renowned ready-to-wear designer apparel start from RM1.

Throughout the campaign period, consumers can also enjoy credit cashback up to 22% for every purchase storewide, and instant shipping and free delivery for selected items. Last but not least, 11street’s Gila-Gila Raya campaign reaches a crescendo through partnerships with popular celebrity designers such as Remy Ishak, Amar Amran, MariBeli Butik; as well as consumer and lifestyle brands such as Firefly, F&N, L’Oreal, MamyPoko, Nestle, Unilever and Samsung.

“We are optimistic that Malaysians will continue to turn to 11street as they prepare for Hari Raya. Therefore, we are constantly cognisant of our consumers’ shopping pattern, so that we can create stronger promotions that resonate with their needs. After all, we want to make each of their shopping experience on 11street an enjoyable one, every time,” concluded Kim.
