StarHub will offer the first ever 5 Gbps broadband plan tailored for households in Singapore. 

Equipped with the latest fibre technology, this plan will ensure that customers can experience enhanced connectivity with less interference. The 5 Gbps broadband plan guarantees symmetrical upload and download speeds of up to 5x faster than a 1 Gbps broadband plan, ensuring smoother streaming experiences and uninterrupted online interactions. Gamers will also be able to engage in immersive gaming experiences without worrying about lag, StarHub said.

Created for higher-capacity usage, the expanded bandwidth of this plan will accommodate more devices to be connected effortlessly at the same time. Installations for customers will be provided at no added costs, StarHub said, with its Hubtroopers recommending the most suitable location for router placement in homes.

StarHub’s 5 Gbps broadband plan is available at a promotional price of S$45/month at all StarHub stores and online for a limited time. This plan will also include a Nokia Optical Network WiFi 6 wireless router, and complimentary Amazon Prime access for three months.

StarHub brings 12GB mobile data bundles back, and more

StarHub’s new two-in-one Hubbing pack SurfHub is now the most affordable way for customers to stay connected on the move as well as at home.

SurfHub from StarHub bundles two StarHub services – a 4G mobile postpaid line with at least 12GB of data and a 1Gbps fibre home broadband subscription – from S$96.56 monthly over 24 months. This is about half of what customers pay for a standalone 12GB mobile plan. As part of SurfHub, customers will also get up to 700mins of local talktime and 1,500 local SMS/MMS as well as a mobile handset subsidy.

“We know customers miss the freedom that huge data bundles offer and wish they were as affordable as before. Faster 4G technologies have catalysed the adoption of data-intensive services, and our customers are now sharing more and watching for longer on their smartphones. In conjunction with the opening of IT Show 2016, Singtel will launch DataX2, a new add-on that offers customers double their mobile data allowance for a flat fee of S$5.90 a month. The new data option is an extension of Singtel’s move to offer more data-centric services following the introduction of its SIM Only Plan last year.

DataX2 will allow customers the option to double their data allowance whenever they sign up or re-contract on one of Singtel’s Combo Mobile Plans (Combo 2 and above). For example, a customer on a S$62.90 a month Combo 3 Plan with 3GB of data will enjoy 6GB of data for S$5.90 more a month with DataX2.

Singtel ups max speeds on fibre broadband for home offices

Singtel will offer a 10Gbps fibre broadband service to residential customers in Singapore starting this month. Leveraging on its Next Generation 10GPON or Gigabit Passive Optical Network, this first-of-its-kind service for residential customers follows the launch of the pilot phase last year.

Goh Seow Eng, MD, Home, Consumer Singapore, Singtel, said, “We made a commitment to our customers to bring them the best network innovations, the very latest technologies for work and play. We recognise that residential customers are using greater bandwidth and requiring faster speeds for their online activities.”

Through a dedicated, ultra-high-speed 10Gbps wired connection*, users will be able to download and stream at larger volumes of data. The service, which also features four 1Gbps ports, can serve as a home networking solution for multi-user environments such as home offices and large households. This will enable individuals working from home to conduct multiple videoconferences, file transfer sessions and even run a home business without compromising on connectivity and bandwidth.

Google brings free Wi-Fi to Mumbai Central Station, introduces Indic keyboard app

Starting 22 January, those passing through Mumbai Central station in India will have access to free, high-speed Wi-Fi, courtesy of Google. The service is part of a project announced in September 2015 to provide high-speed public Wi-Fi in 400 train stations across India.

Working with Indian Railways, which operates one of the world's largest railway networks, and RailTel, which provides Internet services as RailWire via its fibre network along many of the railway lines, Google's Access & Energy team plans to cover 100 of the busiest stations in India before the end of 2016, with the remaining stations following in quick succession.

"We’re hoping those of you from — or travelling through — Allahabad, Jaipur, Patna and Ranchi, will be as excited to learn that your stations are up next!" said Gulzar Azad, Head of Access Programs in India for Google in a blog post.

"Commuters will be able to tell if there is high-speed Wi-Fi available if they can see the ‘RailWire Wi-Fi’ network in Wi-Fi settings. If you see it, select it and follow the simple steps below to gain access on your phone and up to two additional devices, like a laptop or tablet — you’ll just need an Indian mobile number to get an access code for each device."

Azad said the Wi-Fi will initially be free, with a drop in speed after the first hour online. The long-term intention is to charge for the service in some way for self-sustainability.

The news follows an 18 January announcement that Google has developed a touch-based keyboard for the easier input of Hindi—and ten other Indian languages—with a phone or tablet. The Google Indic Keyboard app has been downloaded over 10 million times, and supports the alphabet used for that language, a transliteration keyboard, and handwriting input. Both Latin characters and native characters are recognised.

"By making mobile input easier for almost one billion speakers of Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, we also hope to see more engaging content in these languages on the web," said Linda Lin, Product Manager, Google in a separate blog post.

January 2016 also saw the launch of YouTube home pages customised for Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, in the local language and domain. YouTube was previously available in Nepali, Sinhalese and Urdu.

Indosat Ooredoo launches 4G-LTE service nationwide

Indosat Ooredoo has launched its high speed 4G-LTE service nationwide. The company announced that the faster connectivity and clearer voice quality its new 4Gplus data network provides is available at the same price as existing 3G services.

Over the past two years Indosat Ooredoo has doubled existing network speeds and offered the fastest 3G Internet speeds available. Its 4Gplus service offers download speeds independently tested at reaching up to 185Mbps.

Indosat Ooredoo’s 4Gplus service is available in 21 cities throughout Indonesia, with another 14 to be added by the end of 2015. Indosat Ooredoo is committed to offering the service to 5 million subscribers more each month in 2016.

Indosat Ooredoo’s 4Gplus customers will receive a free data quota of up to 10GB, to be used on the 4G network.  Indosat Ooredoo customers will enjoy 10,000 minutes of voice calls to a loved one on a Indosat Ooredoo number free of charge, with topups from Rp10,000 onwards.

Bundle plans are available from Rp899. Bundle customers may enjoy 6GB of bonus quota valid for three months with a prepaid service or from Rp100 a month with a postpaid service.

Current Indosat Ooredoo customers who do not have a 4G USIM can upgrade their current SIM card to a 4Gplus USIM for free at the nearest Indosat Ooredoo store or through roving mobile agents, who will be situated at central areas.

Singtel SIM Only mobile plan offers unprecedented flexibility

Singtel has come up with a mobile SIM Only plan that is data-centric, contract-free and fully customisable.

The fully flexible plan is one of a kind: the basic plan is a S$20 Starter Pack which includes 5GB of data (3GB local mobile data and 2GB Singtel Premium WiFi), free incoming calls and SMS. Users can further customise their plan at any time with extra data, talktime and SMS/MMS at affordable rates, with the charges reflected in their monthly bill.

2G handsets to stop working in Singapore on 1 April 2017

M1, Singtel and StarHub will stop providing 2G services in Singapore from 1 April, 2017. This will apply to 2G voice, messaging and data services. Those using 3G and 4G handsets will not be affected.

According to all three telcos, mobile networks have evolved since the launch of 2G service in 1994, and Singapore’s extensive 3G and 4G mobile networks have led to high smartphone ownership and usage rates. To cater for consumers’ increased demand for mobile data and faster access speeds, the spectrum currently used for 2G will be used to provide faster, more advanced 3G and 4G services instead.

In the last few years, mobile operators have been conducting outreach programmes to encourage customers to migrate to newer networks. Today, the majority of mobile customers are on 3G and 4G networks, only an extremely small percentage of customers remain on 2G-only mobile devices. The mobile operators will continue to reach out to affected 2G users through various channels as relevant, including SMS, calls and posters at their retail outlets, in the runup to the 2G network closure.

A wide range of 3G and 4G handsets are available at different price points to enable customers to migrate to the newer networks. Existing SIM cards used for 2G-only handsets can be used in a 3G or 4G-compatible device to enjoy the 3G or 4G services. 

Digi expands LTE coverage in Klang Valley, Malaysia

Digi Telecommunications (Digi) announced today that it now serves more areas in the Klang Valley, more than doubling the company’s LTE footprint in this area. This benefits the telco’s customers in the Klang Valley with consistent LTE services.

Albern Murty, Digi’s Chief Executive Officer said Digi’s effort to bring LTE services to more Malaysians nationwide echoes the government’s ambition to ensure greater access to Internet services for all. Together with Digi’s existing 3G coverage, bringing expanded LTE services in the Klang Valley is aligned to the Economic Transformation Programme’s (ETP's) call for improving broadband access for 80% of the populated areas in Greater Kuala Lumpur, with a target of a minimum speed of 2Mbps.

“Our commitment to expand LTE coverage in the Klang Valley and across Malaysia reflects the company’s long term plans to continue investing heavily in its network to deliver Internet for all Malaysians,” said Murty.

The company also has a deep focus on improving network quality. In the next few quarters, Digi will simultaneously increase network coverage, boost capacity and significantly improve both the indoor and outdoor Internet experience in the Klang Valley.

ViewQwest launches 2Gbps fibre broadband services

ViewQwest, Singapore’s premium boutique Internet service provider, has announced the commercial availability of 2Gbps fibre broadband.

Malaysia's MCMC comments on broadband speeds, rollout plans

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has disputed the numbers in Ookla's report on broadband speeds in Malaysia, and says it is all for broadband expansion.

The organisation agrees with Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek’s statement in the media about broadband speeds in Malaysia, saying: "The Communications and Multimedia Minister’s scepticism on online data published by Ookla* on Malaysia’s broadband speeds isn’t without basis. Of late, a number of broadband speed tests have been conducted and publicised by various parties reflecting varying results. Each are measured using different methodologies which results in differing outcomes."

“It all depends on where the tests are coming from and how many cities were calculated,” explained MCMC Chairman, Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi. “We have a robust and vibrant ISP (Internet service provider) market; some may offer higher speeds than others. Consequently, when a speed test is done, the results are averaged out,” he added.

MCMC has long recognised the need to upgrade broadband speeds and quality and since 2010 has pushed for broadband expansion through the implementation of the High Speed Broadband (HSBB) project under the National Broadband Initiative (NBI), the organisation said in a statement. MCMC has gone so far as to issue new spectrum on LTE on 2.6 GHz and also allowed the existing operators to upgrade their networks in the 1800 MHz band to LTE. 

“These networks will take time to build. HSBB phase 1 was completed in over 100 industrial areas, towns and cities and HSBB phase 2 has recently been finalised. In fact, we have already issued the tender for 400 telecommunications towers for the rural areas in Malaysia. Our broadband rollout plan focuses on the whole nation and not just cities like other countries, so that each citizen will be able to enjoy the connectivity,” said Dato’ Sharil.

Efforts to improve the speeds in Malaysia and the government’s commitment are evident. Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak in his Budget 2014 speech announced the implementation of the second phase High Speed Broadband project (HSBB 2) together with broadband to the rural areas carried out in public-private partnership to the tune of RM5.75 Billion for the next three years**.  

“In the next three years, we are expanding the rollout of high speed broadband in city areas to have a minimum speed of 100Mbps and upgrade the broadband in suburban areas to have at least a minimum speed of 4-10Mbps. These are being done through various initiatives for example, by expanding the coverage of  fibre-based technology, building 1,000 telecommunication transmission towers for wireless solutions in rural areas, connecting fibre optic cables backhaul to the base stations and building new submarine cable systems between the Peninsular with Sabah and Sarawak,” said Dato’ Sharil.

“Admittedly, we recognise that much more needs to be done. We continually engage the industry in talks to further improve broadband quality and speeds as well as expand coverage. Our own historical data indicates that there has been explosive growth of broadband consumption and it is possible the industry has under-estimated the demand that needs to be fulfilled. For example, 3G subscription since 2006 has grown 42 times***,” added Dato’ Sharil.

Ookla’s methodology is based on a user generated content platform. It compiles data of people in different locations who use the Ookla server to test internet speeds. Only tests results taken within 300 miles of the server are included in the index and the lowest and highest speeds are divided over the number of test points. The results will differ depending on the broadband packages, population, and country. Furthermore, the results do not distinguish between the different times of day when the tests are carried out when there may be users connecting at Gigabit speeds as well as users connecting at dial-up, satellite or DSL speeds. The more widespread the broadband coverage the more the results will reflect a lower average download speed unless all the areas covered have very high bandwidth concentration.

The Akamai test calculates the average connection speed and the average peak connection speed. The average connection speed is calculated by taking an average of all of the connection speeds while the average peak connection speed is taken from only the highest connection speed. Both are calculated during a quarter-year testing period from the unique IP addresses determined to be in a specific country. Akamai believes that the average peak connection speed is more representative of internet connection capacity.  By using the fastest measurement observed from each unique IP address, those connections that reached maximum throughput rates are reflected.  Often, though not always, these connections are associated with the download of larger files, such as desktop applications, games, or software updates.

Expanding Internet Access

51. In a borderless world, information can be obtained instantaneously. Therefore the requisite infrastructure will be upgraded to meet consumer demand. Hence, the Government has implemented the High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) project under the National Broadband Initiative.

52. The collaboration with the private sector has involved investment of RM11.3bil since the 9th Malaysia Plan. The HSBB project has been implemented with Internet access speed of 4 megabits per second (Mbps) and benefiting 2.3 million premises, particularly in urban areas.

53. To expand coverage in major towns, the Government will implement the second phase of HSBB project in collaboration with the private sector involving an investment of RM1.8bil. The initiative is expected to provide additional coverage and facilities mainly in urban areas, benefiting 2.8 million households nationwide. The Internet speed will be increased to 10 Mbps.

54. The HSBB network will be expanded to suburban areas with an Internet access speed increasing to between 4 and 10 Mbps, which will benefit 2 million consumers at a cost of RM1.6bil.

55. To increase Internet coverage in rural areas, 1,000 telecommunication transmission towers will be built over the next three years, with an investment of RM1.5bil. To increase Internet access in Sabah and Sarawak, new underwater cables will be laid within three years, at a cost of RM850mil. These investments will utilise the Universal Services Provision Fund, which is under the purview of the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission.
