Singtel launches Expressions Through Art showcase

Singtel has launched the 3rd edition of Expressions Through Art, a showcase aimed at raising awareness of the talents and abilities of students from special education (SPED) schools in Singapore. The exhibition featuring 37 artworks by students across all 25 SPED schools in Singapore, will be held for the first time at Gardens by the Bay.

The artworks will be subsequently exhibited at the National Gallery Singapore and digitised versions will be displayed on the windows of six SMRT trains in December. This year’s edition features a combination of scenes from Gardens by the Bay, as well as depictions of animals and landscapes.

The campaign was kicked off by Singtel Group CEO Yuen Kuan Moon and Gardens by the Bay CEO Felix Loh. Yuen said: “Art is a powerful medium for expression, and we’re proud to be able to give these students a chance to shine through this initiative. We’re also glad to have partners like Gardens by the Bay, National Gallery Singapore, and SMRT who are helping to showcase the students’ talents in more locations so more people can appreciate the capabilities of these students, fostering a more empathetic and inclusive society.”

Singtel also supports SPED students through the Singtel Touching Lives Fund (STLF), its flagship corporate philanthropy programme. STLF has raised over S$58 M in support of the critical educational needs of children and youth with special needs across more than 20 charities, as well as for six SPED schools which offer customised education programmes.

As a lead-up to the Expressions Through Art 2024 campaign, 10 students were given a tour of the Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay and attended an art workshop where they translated their impressions of the Supertree Grove into creative art pieces. These were among the 37 artworks featured in this year’s campaign.

Aged between seven to 18 years old, the 44 students participating in the Expressions through Art 2024 campaign used watercolour paints, coloured pencils, and markers to bring their imaginations into vivid reality.

Pathlight School Principal Linda Kho said: “We are grateful for initiatives like Singtel’s Expressions Through Art that provide a platform for students with special needs to shine. Art is a powerful medium for self-expression and enables our students to express their unique perspectives and creativity. Opportunities like these not only showcase their talents and abilities, but also inspire them to continue developing their artistic passion and maximise their potential."

Noorizan Bte Sharif Foeddin, parent of Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS) School (West) student-artist Nurshaqirah Ryhana Bte Shamsha added: "Events like Expressions Through Art help to build the confidence of children with disabilities, and I am incredibly proud that the talent and hard work of my daughter have been recognised. My daughter is also excited and pleased to have had her artwork selected for the art exhibitions, and we hope to be a part of similar events in the future.”

Details

The exhibition will be held at the North Colonnade near the Supertree Grove of the Gardens by the Bay from up to 22 November 2024, followed by the National Gallery Singapore from 9 to 22 December 2024. The digitised versions will be displayed on SMRT trains on the North-South, East-West and Circle lines from 9 to 31 December 2024.

Source: SJM. Wrapped in Versace’s signature Baroque patterns and the sumptuous gold and red tones of Don Alfonso 1890, this MICHELIN Star Table promises an exquisite dining experience with Italian ambiance. The handcrafted terrazzo floor with rosette and flower motifs is inspired by the historic Versace Villa on Lake Como, while the bespoke furniture and Rosenthal x Versace tableware echo Versace's Asian Dream motif. Paintings from Versace's Palace have been hung on the walls, interspersed with the fashion house's signature Barocco pattern.

SJM Resorts and the MICHELIN Guide have joined forces for the 4th consecutive year to present one of Macau’s most coveted dining experiences: the MICHELIN Star Table series.

Chef Migliaccio is renowned for his mastery of Mediterranean cuisine and vibrant colours and bold flavours in his dishes. He said: “It is an honour to be part of this ensemble and this unique event, which also represents an exceptional twofold opportunity: on one side, we will all be sharing the overall Italian culinary tradition with our friends in Macau; on the other, we will be creating connections between the different interpretations that coexist within the Italian gastronomic heritage.”

Chef Iaccarino added: “I am very proud to have this opportunity to showcase our Italian flavours together with Chef Andrea at the beautiful Don Alfonso 1890 in the Palazzo Versace Macau. We can’t wait for our guests to enjoy the flavours of the south of Italy.” Don Alfonso 1890 in Lavello boasts one Michelin Star and a farm-to-table philosophy that ensures the freshest ingredients from an organic farm, Le Peracciole.

Head Chef Pucci also said he is honoured to participate in the gastronomic extravaganza alongside talented chefs. "We can’t wait to share our passion for food with the discerning palates, celebrating the passion, artistry, and joy of sharing great food with others,” he said.

Savills: Dubai is the No. 1 destination for executive nomads

The UAE has taken the top two spots in the Savills Executive Nomad Index this year. Dubai has retained its lead position for the 2nd consecutive year, while UAE capital Abu Dhabi moved from 4th place to 2nd this year.

The Savills Executive Nomad Index ranks 25 destinations for long-term remote workers. All either have a digital nomad visa programme, or equivalent, or in the case of the US and European countries, are already part of a large economic bloc that allows free movement of people for living or work.

They offer favourable climates year-round, a high quality of life and have established prime residential markets. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi rank highly in several categories; however, Dubai has a large advantage in air connectivity, which places it ahead of Abu Dhabi overall.

Dubai International, its main airport, is the world’s busiest for international passenger traffic. The recently announced Al Makhtoum airport expansion in Dubai will make it the largest airport in the world upon completion.

“Dubai and Abu Dhabi are incredibly appealing to executive nomads, because they offer everything you need to thrive both personally and professionally, from modern infrastructure to high quality of life,” said Andrew Cummings, Head of Residential Agency - Middle East at Savills.

“We’ve seen a real focus on creating a lively business environment where there are plenty of opportunities to grow, build networks and make lifelong connections.”

Source: Savills. Chart: the Savills Executive Nomad Index 2024 includes Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bali as destinations.
Source: Savills. The Savills Executive Nomad Index 2024 includes Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bali as destinations.

“The more common digital nomad is symbolised by the young backpacker; however, executive nomads tend to be older and more likely travel with family in tow,” said Kelcie Sellers, Associate Director, Savills World Research.

“This places a greater emphasis on the quality of life aspects that these top international locations can provide, such as safety and access to healthcare or education facilities. For these individuals, both physical networking and digital connectivity are important and must be accounted for.

“Executive nomads are more likely to rent, and put an emphasis on extra space and proximity to local amenities. Prime rents have risen, on average, by 5% in the last year across the 25 locations monitored in the Savills index, with some urban markets seeing increases of more than 15%.”

Also new to the 2024 Index is Bali in 12th place, the 1st and only Southeast Asian city in the index.

Declining employee engagement in hybrid work models: Zoom

Zoom has released Navigating the Future of Work: Global Perspectives on Hybrid Models and Technology, a survey* which has found that the majority of organisations in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC) are embracing flexible working arrangements, with 84% of organisations adopting either a hybrid (58%) or remote (26%) working model.

Launched at Zoom's EX Summit 2024 in Asia Pacific, the study found that productivity is now the top priority for organisations. Eighty-seven percent of leaders in APAC considered increasing productivity to be the biggest consideration when determining the best working style for their company, surpassing sentiment in North America (NA, 86%) and 81% in Western Europe.

The study further found that employees feel most productive in hybrid settings, with 83% of employees in the region agreeing they get more work done in a hybrid/remote setting than in-office/onsite. Zoom noted that having the right technology in place to keep the workforce connected, regardless of workers’ physical locations is therefore critical.

Respondents revealed that many APAC companies are still experimenting with the various types of hybrid models to find their best fit. Notably, scheduled hybrid (27%) and flextime hybrid (19%) have emerged as the most common workplace models in the region, with another 13% of organisations adopting other kinds of hybrid workplace models organised around roles, locations, and outcomes. In fact, 97% of APAC leaders say they have made their workplaces more flexible in the past two years.

Source: Zoom infographic (PDF). The most common workplace model in APAC is 'scheduled hybrid', followed by flextime hybrid.
Source: Zoom infographic (PDF). The most common workplace model in APAC is 'scheduled hybrid', where specific days are spent at remote locations and other days at the office, followed by 'flextime hybrid', where the employee divides their time between remote working and the office on a more variable schedule.

On the downside, more needs to be done to engage employees. Six in 10 leaders in the region report a decline in employee engagement attributed to hybrid models.

“Workplace flexibility is not only becoming increasingly commonplace in the APAC region, but more diverse in itself — ranging from flextime to location, role, and even rotation-based models,” noted Ricky Kapur, Head of Asia Pacific, Zoom.

“Leaders today are faced with a new challenge of finding the best-fit hybrid model while keeping up with the evolving expectations of a multi-generational workforce and the impact of rapidly-advancing technologies like AI.”

In order to prepare for the future of work, the study revealed that organisations need to improve their current tech stack. More than eight in 10 employees (81%) agree that the tools and technology their organisation currently uses for remote work needs improving, highest among the other regions surveyed (NA: 79%; Western Europe: 65%).

Generative AI has already become a key tool to support employee productivity and overall experience in the hybrid era. Eighty-five percent of APAC leaders believe that generative AI has made their workforce more productive, and 69% of employees in the region strongly or slightly agree that “generative AI makes it easier to do my job.

APAC organisations recorded the highest use of meeting transcripts/summarisation (53% in APAC, 40% in NA, and 38% in Western Europe), and chatbots (59% in APAC, 52% in NA, and 58% in Western Europ”

However, significant barriers to generative AI adoption for employees in APAC still remain, as 70% believe that generative AI has a high learning curve. Over six in 10 (63%) are not yet comfortable with generative AI. More than half (55%) are concerned that generative AI will negatively impact their job/position.

Moving forward, increased education on the benefits, use cases, and how they can mitigate risks must be done before teams can fully unlock the true value of AI for their workforce, Zoom said.

“While our study shows that APAC leaders generally recognise the productivity benefits that adopting AI at work can bring to their teams, many are not utilising AI to their full potential. As organisations seek to reduce friction in the transition to hybrid ways of working, AI is a critical tool at their disposal to help employees collaborate better and feel more connected to each other.

"Beyond direct productivity benefits, leaders should look toward exploring more AI use cases to engage, inform, and connect employees. This will be key to building and maintaining company culture amidst changing workplace dynamics,” added Kapur.

Even as hybrid becomes the dominant work model, 77% of leaders in APAC say it is likely that their organisation will change its workplace model in the next two years. Globally, this figure sits at 75%.

Ultimately, building a successful, future-ready workplace requires organisations to continuously adapt to employees’ feedback and evolving preferences. Having the right technology in place that can adapt and evolve with the organisation at the same time, including AI tools that are both scalable and right-fit, is also a key piece to the puzzle, Zoom observed.

*The Future of Work survey and the IT Leadership survey were global studies conducted by Reworked, a global community of employee experience, digital workplace, and talent management professionals, on behalf of Zoom. The companies surveyed more than 600 IT and C-suite leaders and nearly 1,900 knowledge workers across the globe including 604 in APAC, exploring their views on different workplace models, productivity levels across models, the impact of generative AI on work, and other topics related to the future of work.

Markets in APAC included Australia, India, Japan, and Singapore. Data was collected online, all questions were required, and results were collected anonymously. Employer survey dates: April-May 2024; Respondents: 624. Employee survey dates: April-May 2024; Respondents: 1,870.

Singapore employees feeling challenged at work: Employment Hero

Source: Employment 2024 Hero. Poster for
the 2024 Wellness at Work
Report.
Employment Hero's 2024 Wellness at Work Report* has found that despite ongoing efforts by employers to provide a healthy workplace for their employees, the majority still do not address providing mental health and wellbeing support.

The report, which polled 1,018 Singapore employees, found minimal improvement in burnout levels, with 61% of employees feeling burnt out in 2024 compared to 62% in 2022. This underscores that employers have not done enough to manage employee burnout over the past two years, the people, payroll and benefits software provider said.

One of the possible reasons for this stagnation is that a large proportion of employees reported that they do not have access to essential wellness services, such as on-site health assessments, mobile health clinics, comprehensive benefits management, physical fitness and wellness programmes, and mental health support initiatives, Employment Hero suggested.

Only 45% of employees stated that their employer provides access to confidential counselling. These gaps in wellness support and programmes contribute to the persistence of high burnout levels among employees, Employment Hero said.

The group with the highest rates of burnout is Gen Z, with 68% reporting feeling burnt out at work in the past three months. This is followed by 65% of Millennials, 54% of Gen X, and 36% of Baby Boomers.

Employment Hero CEO and co-founder Ben Thompson said: “The findings of our 2024 Wellness at Work Report underscore the urgent need for employers to prioritise mental health and wellness programmes. It's clear that current efforts are insufficient, as evidenced by the persistent high levels of burnout and stress, particularly among younger employees.

"Employers must take proactive steps to provide comprehensive mental health support and wellness initiatives to foster a healthier, more productive workforce. Addressing these issues is not just about improving employee well-being, but also about ensuring sustainable business success in the long term."

Nearly four in 10 (39%) Singaporeans indicated that they had felt stressed at work a few days a week in the last three months, with 36% feeling stressed a few days a month. Again, Gen Zs are struggling the most, with 58% feeling stressed at the workplace a few days a week, compared to 44% of Millennials, 29% of Gen X, and 20% of Baby Boomers.

“Dealing with stress at work is a common challenge that many employees face, and addressing it effectively is crucial for both personal well-being and professional performance,” shared Sudesh T, Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Manulife Asia.

“Flexible working arrangements, remote work options, and flexible hours so employees can better manage both personal and professional responsibilities can significantly reduce stress and improve overall job satisfaction.”

Highlights include:

● Nearly three in 10 (27%) employees said financial stress and the rising cost of living is the biggest cause of stress

● Under half (47%) of all employees are on track with their financial goals

● About six in 10 (58%) employees don’t think their workplaces are doing enough to support rising living costs

*Employment Hero’s 2024 Wellness at Work Report is based on an analysis of 1,018 Singaporean employees, focusing on mental health, career wellness, and financial wellbeing. To participate in the survey, respondents had to be employed in any capacity (full-time, part-time, casual, fixed term) and not be business owners. The survey collected responses between April 12 and May 1, 2024. Similar research was also conducted in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Tata Communications: Gap between customer experience ideals and reality

Source: Tata Communications landing page. Chart of customer interaction hurdles.
Source: Tata Communications landing page. Customer interaction hurdles, with the top hurdle being a lack of collaboration across teams. A new customer experience (CX) and customer interactions survey by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services in association with Tata Communications has uncovered the biggest hurdles organisations face in improving customer experience.

A new customer experience (CX) and customer interactions survey by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services in association with Tata Communications has revealed that relatively few organisations think they consistently deliver positive customer interactions.

The finding is part of a December 2023 global pulse survey, in which 264 members of the Harvard Business Review audience, all familiar with their organisation’s strategy and approach to customer interactions, shared how their companies manage customer interactions and their future plans to transform customer experiences.

While 94% acknowledge it is very important that organisations consistently deliver positive customer interactions for business success, 38% said their organisation is very effective at consistently delivering them. In another paradox, 91% of respondents agreed that making interactions more useful for customers can optimise an organisation’s efficiency. However, 49% of respondents did not feel their organisation has the right technology in place to support strong customer interactions.

The survey revealed key roadblocks that organisations need to address to create quality customer interactions:

- Nearly half (48%) of respondents cited a lack of collaboration across teams as a challenge, which could be hindering a unified customer journey

- Roughly four in 10 (39%) identified that siloed or disorganised customer data likely makes it difficult to personalise experiences

- Over a third (35%) believed the use of different digital tools or dashboards across the organisation is a challenge - this issue can create friction for both customers and staff

Tata Communications also said the survey highlights how each customer interaction is a building block that shapes their overall perception and CX of an organisation or brand. Individual interactions, positive experiences, and business outcomes are inextricably linked.

Mauro Carobene, VP and Global Head – Customer Interactions Suite, Tata Communications said: “Brands encounter multiple challenges when trying to deliver excellent customer experience, the most prominent being siloed data, lack of collabortion across departments, and working with multiple partners across different channels. Brands that work on individual touchpoints, rather than seeing each interaction as part of a journey, lack a 360-degree view of their customers.”

The study further revealed that making cross-channel customer interactions more seamless, consistent and personal is paramount, with 97% of respondents saying their organisation is focusing on one or more improvements to CX over the next 12 months.

Alex Clemente, MD, HBR Analytics Services, said: “This research underscores that the experience a company provides is often as important as its products or services in terms of customer satisfaction and loyalty. Enhancing the customer experience isn’t just the job of customer service and marketing teams; every team involved with the customer should have the capability to collaborate and contribute.

"Technology can be a big help in driving exceptional customer interactions across multiple channels. With the right tools, organisations can analyse customer data more effectively, personalise interactions, make that data accessible across the organisation, and create a seamless experience for both customers and employees.”

Kramnik to play Alcántara in rematch on Chessarena.com

Source: World Chess. Kramnik (left) will replay José Alcántara (Jospem, right) in August 2024.

World Chess, a chess organisation committed to enhancing the global mass market appeal of chess, will host Clash of Claims 2, a chess rematch after the first Clash of Claims between Vladimir Kramnik and José Alcántara ended in controversy. The event will feature live commentary from prominent figures in the chess community and interactive segments for viewers.

Kramnik, the 14th World Chess champion, has been actively sharing evidence of what he believes indicates cheating in online chess tournaments. With the ease of access to software that could help players cheat, the results of some online tournaments have led to accusations of deception.

Following Kramnik’s claims, a hybrid approach was suggested in June this year with Kramnik playing against Grandmaster José Alcántara, a well-known online chess player, in a three-day chess event. This first Clash of Claims event was held in Madrid and was a hybrid mix of in-person board games and online matches via the Chess.com platform.

Due to technical issues with Chess.com, World Chess has invited the players to return for Clash of Claims 2 in London from 19 - 21 August 2024, hosted on its Chessarena.com platform. This rematch will have stringent physical and online anti-cheating methods in place to address previous alleged shortcomings. Chessarena.com is the only online platform that has an anti-cheating engine approved by FIDE, the international governing body of chess.

Chessarena.com plans to leverage this event to highlight new platform features, including the introduction of in-game emoticons, and to run a Clash of Claims 2 promotion for new subscribers.

Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess said: “We are so excited to welcome these two renowned players, once again, to the stage to battle it out in London.

“World Chess and the FIDE Arena are looking forward to resolving once and for all the fair play allegations raised by Kramnik, and to enhance the reputability of online chess tournaments.

“We are confident Chessarena.com will provide advanced anti-cheating measures and a superior platform from which the games will be hosted.

“Online chess is going through a major transformation right now. We are possibly witnessing the ultimate way to address all anti-cheating allegations — by taking an online dispute to the physical board, marking a truly hybrid approach.”

A report from Salesforce has found high expectations for customer service to contribute more revenue in 2024. With AI enabling greater personalised customer experiences, service teams are well-poised to maximise upselling, cross-selling and customer retention opportunities to drive revenue, the company said.

The company recently released the new State of Service report, sharing insights from over 5,500 service professionals across 30 countries — including 100 from Singapore. The report covers the priorities, challenges, and strategies shaping customer service. It includes how service teams tap AI and data to increase revenue, efficiency, and customer satisfaction amid rising customer expectations.

According to the Singapore Business Federation’s National Business Survey, revenue growth (76%) and reducing costs (62%) were among the top priorities for business leaders this year, amid rising economic pressures and uncertainties.

At the same time, data and AI is enabling service teams to demonstrate their ability to drive revenue growth through greater efficiency and upsell activities,” said Gavin Barfield, CTO and VP of Solutions at Salesforce ASEAN.

“AI is helping customer service agents be more efficient by reducing administrative tasks, which frees up time for them to focus on delivering personalised customer experiences and revenue generation. This will fundamentally shift the role of service teams within businesses from cost centres to profit centres.”

Seventy more universities are ranked this year than last, totalling 739 this year. This is a 10.5% increase, from 31 countries/regions, while a further 388 are listed as having reporter status*. Many of the newly-ranked institutions are in west or south Asia.

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education’s Chief Global Affairs Officer said: “We have tracked the impressive rise of China in the global rankings for two decades now, but what we can clearly see now is that the rising tide in Asia is lifting all boats.

“While China’s leading universities now compete at the very top of the world rankings, our data shows a strengthening across Asia, where a healthy competition, more collaboration, more investment in research and university capacity and more internationalisation is driving up performance. It all amounts to hugely positive tectonic shifts in higher education from the west to the wast, with real excellence demonstrated in East Asia and Southeast Asia in particular and well beyond.

“Another significant highlight is the growth of other regional powerhouses including India, Japan and increasingly Thailand, all of which show a continuous improvement in Asian countries’ higher education systems, which must be seen against the backdrop of an increasingly highly competitive higher education environment in the region.”

This is the 12th edition of THE’s the Asia University Rankings. Japan had the most universities in the rankings with 119 entries, followed by India with 91, up from 75 last year. The country’s highest-ranked institution is the Indian Institute of Science at 32nd place, up from 48th. In 3rd place is mainland China with 86 universities.

Turkey has 75 universities, up from 61 last year. The top two – Koç University and Middle East Technical University – share 69th place, while Istanbul Technical University rose from joint 149th to 92nd. Iran is the fifth-most represented country with 73 universities.

The methodology behind the Asia University Rankings is based on the same framework as the World University Rankings, but the weightings are recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions. Check the Asia University Rankings 2024 methodology. THE revised and improved its methodology for its World University Rankings 2024, adding new metrics relating to research quality and patents. The methodological change has highlighted performances from universities in research that were not previously completely visible.

The addition of the new patent metric, part of the industry pillar, allows the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry to be measured. Nineteen Asian universities scored 100 on this metric, with four institutions each from Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea achieving this.

*Reporter status means that although the institution submitted data, it did not meet THE’s eligibility criteria to receive a ranked position.
