This year's Abu Dhabi Calendar features highlights like the NBA Abu Dhabi Games; Saudi singer, actor and composer Abdul Majeed Abdullah; the winter experience Liwa International Festival; and the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025.

Kickstarting the action are back-to-back bouts from UAE Warriors 64, bringing mixed martial arts (MMA) to the capital. At the same time, culture-seekers can explore Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire, Louvre Abu Dhabi's main exhibition of the season. Running until January, it shines a light on the craftsmanship of one of the Islamic world's most influential dynasties – making it a must-visit cultural highlight.

The excitement builds in October as global stars and regional legends take the stage from Smashing Pumpkins and Andre Rieu to Abdul Majeed Abdullah – with American comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco adding some homour to the event lineup.

The NBA Abu Dhabi Games presented by ADQ will return together with basketball festival NBA District, bringing basketball action and exciting fan moments, alongside a combat sports schedule that includes Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, mixed martial arts fight UFC 321 and UFC ancillary events such as the Open Workouts, Official Press Conference, and Ceremonial Weigh Ins.

Culture gets the limelight with Sheikh Zayed Festival and cultural centre Bait Al Oud's Strings Concert as well as exhibitions like Golden Ink: A Journey through Arabic and Islamic Manuscripts, annual exhibition and competition Art Here 2025 and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim: Two Clouds in the Night Sky, a solo exhibition celebrating the work of pioneer Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim.

In November, concerts by Enrique Iglesias and Travis Scott headline the month, while foodies can indulge in culinary experiences at Michelin Guide Food Festival Abu Dhabi, Taste of Abu Dhabi and Open Fire Food Festival.

Cultural highlights include the Traditional Handicrafts Festival, Maritime Heritage Festival, Sounds of UAE, Abu Dhabi Art and Manar Abu Dhabi, all of which offer experiences that showcase heritage, culture, and creativity. Beetlejuice The Musical is also set to take over Etihad Arena this month.

The year draws to a close with music legends Rod Stewart and Arijit Singh lighting up Abu Dhabi stages, accompanied by the return of Saadiyat Nights, which brings star-studded concerts outdoors. Ludovico Einaudi and Lewis Capaldi will add both classical brilliance and soulful melodies to the month's lineup.

F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 is set to provide full-throttle excitement, while festivals like Liwa Village, a part of the annual Liwa International Festival, and Mother of the Nation transform Al Dhafra Region, Al Ain Region and Abu Dhabi City into hubs of heritage and creativity, live music and high-energy adventures.

More events will be announced as the 2025-2026 season unfolds.

Canon PhotoMarathon 2025 showcases visual stories for SG60

The 19th edition of Canon PhotoMarathon 2025, one of Singapore’s highly anticipated photography events, welcomed over 600 photography enthusiasts. Organised by Canon Singapore, it was themed One Click, One Vibe and aims to promote photography as a vital visual arts form by celebrating innovation, storytelling and artistic expression through the lens.

This year’s competition saw submissions across three mystery themes – Home, Vintage and Vibe(s) – unveiled at intervals during the day. Participants raced across the island, conceptualising, shooting and submitting each photo within a two-hour window per theme for a chance to win Canon products worth around S$50,000 in total.

“As Singapore’s photography scene continues to evolve, we understand what photography enthusiasts need and endeavour to continue supporting them in telling their creative stories. Canon PhotoMarathon has grown from a competition into a vibrant showcase of creativity, diversity and technical excellence that fuels the photography community in Singapore.

"One of the themes this year reflects the values of SG60 and serves as a reminder of the everyday lives and spirit of the people in Singapore,” said Andrew Koh, Senior VP and Head of Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Mark Teo, a Commercial and Action Sports Photographer and a third-time judge of the Canon PhotoMarathon shared: “It is always inspiring to see how different people interpret the same theme. Each year, the standard just keeps rising. This year’s themes were trickier, prompting participants to think outside the box in order to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Clean composition, good lighting and clear relevance to the theme really made the winning entries stand out.”

Canon Singapore has also continued its partnership with APSN, a social service agency that provides special education, vocational training and employment support services for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities. Through this collaboration, Canon seeks to unite individuals through photography — a universal art form that knows no boundaries.

This year was no different as students from APSN were invited to participate in the student categories. This is reflective of Canon’s philosophy of kyosei (共生) – living and working together for the common good, and empowering individuals of all abilities to excel in harmony.

“Beyond encouraging students to express their creativity and build confidence, the Canon PhotoMarathon reflects our school’s values – I Can, I Want, I Will – and motivates them to believe in themselves. Most importantly, the event fosters inclusivity by empowering individuals with special needs to become active contributors of society. Through platforms like this, we not only showcase their talents but also inspire the broader community to celebrate their achievements,” said Muhammad Faris, CCA Arts Coordinator, APSN Delta Senior School.

Wayne Kwan, an educator who has joined over 11 editions said: “I first participated in the Canon PhotoMarathon in 2012. Photography is my way of capturing memories, and I enjoy the thrill of the hunt for unique angles. This year is extra special as my wife and son have joined me in this year’s PhotoMarathon, turning this event into a meaningful family experience built upon our shared love for the hobby.”

De Long Goh, 58 years old, engineer and long-time participant of 10 years, shared, “Every year brings something new, reconnecting with friends, exploring different subjects and challenging myself to think creatively about what to shoot. Some themes can be difficult to interpret, but that is exactly what makes the event so rewarding – it pushes me to improve my photography skills every year.”

Kenneth Chia, 39 years old, engineer and first prize winner of the Open category for the Home theme said: “I was very surprised to win the first prize, and my hands are still shaking. When I think of home, I think of my 17-month son and all the things that I treasure the most.

Once the theme was announced, I went back to my HDB flat to capture what was most important to me. My kid is home. This image of my child was taken against the flag which embodies Home, a symbol of our shared identity.”

Aaron Low, Photo Director and one of the judges said: “The Canon PhotoMarathon really brings the community together by forming lasting bonds through a shared passion for photography. To me, the most important part of photography is storytelling, and a strong photo should convey a clear message that resonates with many. Composition and the overall impact of the image, beyond technical details, are crucial. The winning photos comprised these elements and turned out outstanding.”

Celestia Tan, Fashion Photographer and also a judge said: “Canon PhotoMarathon offers a unique platform for photography enthusiasts to explore, experiment and have fun. For me, the true magic of photography lies in capturing a moment and bringing a vision to life. The second theme, Vintage, was probably the most challenging for participants, where many adopted a literal interpretation due to the time constraints. The most exciting part of this competition is seeing how participants interpreted these themes, capturing diverse stories and unique perspectives through the lens.”

Launched in 2003, the Canon PhotoMarathon is designed to inspire and provoke creative expression by pushing participants to think beyond conventional boundaries. With mystery themes, tight timelines and an open invitation to all levels of photographers, participants race against the clock in a test of creativity and quick thinking to capture fresh, unique perspectives that bring each theme to life.

The themes encourage photographers to explore new ideas, experiment with different techniques to tell stories. This fosters a vibrant community where creativity flourishes, and diverse voices come together to redefine the art of photography.

Beyond Canon PhotoMarathon 2025, photographers can engage in a range of Canon-led activities aimed at nurturing Singapore’s photography scene. Activities include immersive workshops and guided shoots that offer valuable opportunities for both emerging and experienced photographers to sharpen their skills, expand their creative horizons and receive mentorship from seasoned professionals to elevate standards of photographic excellence in Singapore.

Kramnik to play Alcántara in rematch on Chessarena.com

Source: World Chess. Kramnik (left) will replay José Alcántara (Jospem, right) in August 2024.

World Chess, a chess organisation committed to enhancing the global mass market appeal of chess, will host Clash of Claims 2, a chess rematch after the first Clash of Claims between Vladimir Kramnik and José Alcántara ended in controversy. The event will feature live commentary from prominent figures in the chess community and interactive segments for viewers.

Kramnik, the 14th World Chess champion, has been actively sharing evidence of what he believes indicates cheating in online chess tournaments. With the ease of access to software that could help players cheat, the results of some online tournaments have led to accusations of deception.

Following Kramnik’s claims, a hybrid approach was suggested in June this year with Kramnik playing against Grandmaster José Alcántara, a well-known online chess player, in a three-day chess event. This first Clash of Claims event was held in Madrid and was a hybrid mix of in-person board games and online matches via the Chess.com platform.

Due to technical issues with Chess.com, World Chess has invited the players to return for Clash of Claims 2 in London from 19 - 21 August 2024, hosted on its Chessarena.com platform. This rematch will have stringent physical and online anti-cheating methods in place to address previous alleged shortcomings. Chessarena.com is the only online platform that has an anti-cheating engine approved by FIDE, the international governing body of chess.

Chessarena.com plans to leverage this event to highlight new platform features, including the introduction of in-game emoticons, and to run a Clash of Claims 2 promotion for new subscribers.

Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess said: “We are so excited to welcome these two renowned players, once again, to the stage to battle it out in London.

“World Chess and the FIDE Arena are looking forward to resolving once and for all the fair play allegations raised by Kramnik, and to enhance the reputability of online chess tournaments.

“We are confident Chessarena.com will provide advanced anti-cheating measures and a superior platform from which the games will be hosted.

“Online chess is going through a major transformation right now. We are possibly witnessing the ultimate way to address all anti-cheating allegations — by taking an online dispute to the physical board, marking a truly hybrid approach.”

Series description: Everything in life is made up of impressions from the past and whatever befalls us today. The fabric which took one form yesterday takes on a new form now. All creatures still fight for their survival. Nature is the battlefield. The forces of the world are as they have ever been; the waves of the sea, storms, the earth itself. But ultimately it is humanity, marching everywhere, claiming everything, proving to the world that it will endure. We strove to live, to take and to control, before even knowing what to call ourselves. We think we will last forever so we hunt, build, wear clothes and consume, changing our ideas and our tools over the years but never changing our ways. We chased after more and more and something was always left behind. Homes were abandoned, chairs left empty and clothes unworn, even the buttons of a shirt were lost. We have raced to eternity, knowing life is fleeting, leaving the lights on behind us as if to say that once upon a time we were alive. Here are the silent neighbourhoods: those places free of the presence of humanity. The noise of their silence can be heard everywhere – but here in these places we are condemned to hear nothing.

Portuguese photographer Edgar Martins, who won in both the 2009 and 2018 Sony World Photography Awards said: “The media response to the awards was overwhelming, with extensive press and TV coverage all over the world. Chase light from day to night on 28 July in Singapore

Source: Canon. The Canon PhotoMarathon XVI will feature day-to-night assignments.

Back for its 16th year, the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI is slated for 28 July in Singapore. This year, Canon is taking a step further by giving back to the community and also introducing new elements in the competition format.

In line with Canon’s ongoing support of the local sporting scene, Canon recently announced a partnership with Olympian Joseph Schooling. In support of Canon PhotoMarathon which seeks to inspire and bring the photography community closer, Schooling will be at the event to unveil one of the competition themes.

Kyosei (共生), which means "living and working together for the common good", lies at the heart of Canon’s corporate philosophy. In the spirit of this belief, all registration fees collected from Canon PhotoMarathon this year will be donated to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), a community project to fund school-going children from low-income families.

“This year, we would like to encourage the photography community to test their creative mettle and at the same time, contribute back to the community,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Domestic Operations, Canon Singapore.

“Canon PhotoMarathon is not just a competition of photography skills and creativity, it is also a test of one’s endurance and stamina. With Joseph Schooling present at this year’s competition, we hope that participants will be inspired by his tenacity and rigour to achieve big dreams, much like how he attained Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal.”

True to its name, Canon PhotoMarathon is a blend of photography and sports. Both mental and physical endurance are required for the full-day competition. While the format of the competition remains the same with three competition themes announced at intervals throughout the event, this year’s event will kick off at a later timing of 11am.

This allows photographers working on the third and last theme to take advantage of a mix of day and night lighting when they put their photography skills and creativity to the test.

The ‘dusk’ challenge will be announced at 5pm and the closing submission time for this final theme will be at 8pm. Sunset is typically after 7pm.

Participants will have three hours from the announcement to submit a photo which demonstrates a unique perspective in picture composition according to the assigned theme. Adding an additional element of surprise to the mix, participants will have a say in voting for one of the competition themes this year.

There will be a total of more than S$50,000 worth of Canon products to be won. In addition, all registered participants will stand a chance to win a pair of Lufthansa air tickets to Munich, Germany in the lucky draw segment.

Apart from category prizes, the Best of Show winners from the Open and Student categories will win an exclusive spot each in the Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship held in 2019, which is valued at more than US$5,000.

The all-expenses paid trip will bring participants on an exclusive scenic journey to explore various facets of photography under the tutelage of a professional photographer. The championship will involve further theme challenges to select the champion among winners.

In addition, a charity sale of limited edition prints, specially curated by The Straits Times photo desk and The Schooling Company, will be held from 20 to 26 July via shop.canon.com.sg/charity.All proceeds will be donated to the STSPMF.

The judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards have announced that Singapore at dawn by Lester Koh Meng Hua has won the Singapore National Award.

The Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s largest photography competition, and the
National Awards is a global programme open to photographers of all abilities. It aims to find the best single photograph taken by a local photographer in 65 countries. This year's winners were selected from 80,408 images made by 5,034 photographers from 126 different countries.

Koh is a photography enthusiast interested in different genres, such as abstract, nature, sports, architecture, people, street photography, and cultural events. His winning image captures the rustic charm of one of Singapore’s oldest public housing blocks, with residents displaying the Singapore flag outside their apartments.

“The very simple geometric design of squares and circles somehow intrigued me”, Koh said. He was not satisfied with the shots taken on his first attempt, which led to him deciding to explore taking the shot at dawn on 14 August 2016, during Singapore’s 51st National Day celebration month. This resulted in the discovery of the perfect combination of warm and cold corridor lighting.

Said Koh: "I did not expect that my simple architectural image would have caught the attention of the panel of distinguished judges. I was pleasantly surprised, elated and deeply honoured when I was notified that my image had won the prestigious National Award. This award will definitely inspire me to pursue my photography hobby with even greater passion.”

Other winners for the Singapore National Award included:

 2nd place: Albert Tan for Mongolia Yurt

 3rd place: William Chua for the image Kazakhs

Koh's winning work will be shown alongside the awards’ other winning and shortlisted images at the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition in London, UK  and published in the annual winners’ book.

Produced by the World Photography Organisation, 2017 sees the 10th anniversary of the Sony
World Photography Awards. A total of 227,596 images were entered into the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards across all competitions. The awards recognise and reward the best contemporary photography captured over the last year. The overall winners of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards will be announced on 20 April.

Indonesia wins UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year Award

Indonesia has taken the UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year Award for the third year running. The United Overseas Bank (UOB) revealed that 36-year-old Gatot Indrajati has won the award for Right or Wrong My Home, a relief acrylic painting. Indrajati also picked up the 2016 UOB Painting of the Year, Indonesia award.

Judges commended his innovative use of wood, a traditional art medium in Indonesia combined with paint to create a visually compelling and contemporary artwork. They said Indrajati’s treatment of composition and layering to create a range of perspectives in the painting emphasised a sense of space while reflecting a typical Southeast Asian cityscape. The judges further noted that his application of light-hearted iconography invites the audience to contemplate the artist’s intent.

Indrajati said, “ I was inspired by the passion that Indonesians have for their country and how that attitude is such an inherent part of the Indonesian identity. Indonesians also have a wry sense of humour and we often use humour as a way to demonstrate the love for our country. I wanted my painting to portray that passion and patriotism."

Wee Ee Cheong, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, UOB, said that the Bank remains committed to supporting the development of art in Southeast Asia for the long-term.

"We recognise the important role art plays in strengthening the fabric of a society. It connects people and communities, celebrates cultures and enriches lives. What is also distinctive about the UOB art programme is our focus on giving back. Beyond nurturing and profiling artistic talents, we also connect our artist alumni and our community partners to bring art appreciation to underprivileged and special needs children, " Wee said.

In the Established Artist category Carey Ngai, 49, won the UOB Painting of the Year (Singapore) Award. Ngai's entry was an oil on canvas painting, Industry 2.0 III. The judges were impressed by Ngai’s use of shades and colours in his realistic art piece. His painting draws a parallel between the obsolescence of industrial machinery and that of human abilities as societies evolve and as artificial intelligence becomes integrated into daily life.

For the Emerging Artist category: Yoko Choi Chi Mei, 38, was named the Most Promising Artist of the Year (Singapore). Choi created a diptych piece, City Wandering. Using ink marker on Chinese ink paper to create intricate, overlapping and multi-directional patterns, the artist explores how the search for change can reshape one’s perception of order and certainty.

The annual UOB Painting of the Year competition is held across four Southeast Asian countries. In Singapore, it is the longest-running art contest and is also the Bank’s flagship art programme. UOB’s focus on championing art as a key pillar of its corporate social responsibility programme began in Singapore more than 40 years ago. Over the years, the UOB Painting of the Year competition has launched the careers of artists in Singapore and the region including Singapore Cultural Medallion winners Raymond Lau, Chua Say Hua and Hong Sek Chern.

The regional panel of judges comprised representatives from each of the four participating countries: Agung Hujatnika Jennong, an independent curator and lecturer at the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia; Choy Chun Wei, an award-winning contemporary artist from Malaysia; Dr Bridget Tracy Tan, Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts and Art Galleries, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore; and Amrit Chusuwan, an artist and Dean of the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University in Thailand.
