Facebook flooded with fake pages luring victims with generative AI

Source: CPR. Sample posts on fake Facebook pages inviting viewers to download malware.

A new scam uncovered by Check Point Research (CPR) uses Facebook to scam victims by taking advantage of the interest in generative AI.  Many of these fake pages have tens of thousands of followers, with a mix of real content and malware, Check Point said.

Criminals first create fake Facebook pages or groups for a popular brand, even including engaging content. The pages can offer tips, news and enhanced versions of AI services Google Bard or ChatGPT, for example.

Unsuspecting Facebook users end up passionately discussing the role of AI in the comments and like or share posts, thereby ensuring it shows up on the feeds of their friends and attracting them to the page as well.

The scam occurs when visitors are invited to obtain new services or special content via a link on the page. Most of the Facebook pages lead to landing pages which encourage users to download password-protected archive files that are allegedly related to generative AI engines. When the link is clicked, victims unknowingly download malware, designed to steal their online passwords, crypto wallets and other information saved in their browser.

There are many versions, from Bard New, Bard Chat, GPT-5, G-Bard AI and others. Some posts and groups also try to take advantage of the popularity of other AI services such as Midjourney and Jasper AI. Seemingly small details matter, such as the fact that the real Jasper AI page has 2 million fans or the length of time the page has been in operation, in telling the genuine from the fake.

According to Sergey Shykevich, Threat Intelligence Group Manager, Check Point Research: "Unfortunately, thousands of people are falling victim to this scam. They are interacting with the fake pages, which furthers their spread – and are even installing malware which is disguised as free AI tools. We urge everyone to be vigilant in ensuring they are only downloading files from authentic and trusted sites."

CPR observed that criminals have gone to great lengths to ensure their pages appear authentic. When a user searches for ‘Midjourney AI’ on Facebook and encounters a page with 1.2 million followers, they are likely to believe it is an authentic page. The principle applies to other indicators of page legitimacy: when posts on the fake page have numerous likes and comments, it indicates that other users have already interacted positively with the content, reducing the likelihood of suspicion.

Additionally, the links to malicious websites are mixed with links to legitimate Midjourney reviews or social networks.

CPR attributed the surge to expanding underground markets, where initial access brokers specialise in acquiring and selling access or credentials to compromised systems. Additionally, the growing value of data used for targeted attacks such as business email compromise and spear-phishing, has fuelled the proliferation of infostealers.

As authentic AI services make it possible for cybercriminals to create and deploy sophisticated, credible scams, it is essential for individuals and organisations to stay vigilant, CPR said. Some rules of thumb to protect yourself include:

- Ignore display names: Phishing sites or emails can be configured to show anything in the display name. Instead of looking at the display name, check the sender’s email or web address to verify that it comes from a trusted and authentic source.

- Verify the domain: Phishers will commonly use domains with minor misspellings or that seem plausible. For example, company.com may be replaced with cormpany.com or an email may be from company-service.com. These misspellings are good indicators.

- Always download software from trusted sources: Instead of downloading software from a Facebook group, go directly to a trusted source, such as the official web page for that software. Do not click on downloads from groups, unofficial forums etc.

- Check the links: URL phishing attacks are designed to trick recipients into clicking on a malicious link. Hover over the links within an email and see if they actually go where they claim. Enter suspicious links into a phishing verification tool like phishtank.com, which will tell you if they are known phishing links. If possible, don’t click on a link at all; visit the company’s site directly and navigate to the indicated page.

Source: ComScore. Social network interactions between Facebook and Instagram for July 2016 around the Olympic games, which ran from 5 to 21 August.

ComScore has reported that social network Instagram was the star for engagement during Rio 2016, although Facebook - which owns Instagram - was the main social platform used to share official content before the event.

In June, the UK ranked third in the world in total unique visitors on RIO2016.COM, followed by Australia and Argentina. Latin American countries were in the top two. Other highlights included:
  • With 3 million fans around the world, the Rio 2016 Facebook page increased post cadence before the Olympic games when compared to the previous quarter. Frequency grew from 47 posts per week between April and May to 55 during July 2016.
  • During July, 40% of total actions on the RIO 2016 Facebook page were generated by posts containing videos. Once the games started, posts with photos took precedence, responsible for 81% of total actions during the first weekend of the games, including likes, shares and comments.
  • 63% of official Rio 2016 social content was posted on Facebook during July. However, despite less content, Instagram was responsible for 72% of the total actions on Rio 2016 social networks during the same month.

Facebook says only native and video ads deliver significant value

In a recent blog post Facebook's Dave Jakubowski, Head of Ad Tech, has gone on the record to say that exchanges and banners do not bring much value.

Jakubowski reported that the company has tested "a buying platform" in Atlas, Facebook's people-based ad serving and measurement solution. The test, which occurred last year, led to two major takeaways:

Ads were delivered to real people "with unprecedented accuracy", but came up against many bad ads and fraud (like bots). "While we were fortunately able to root out the bad actors and only buy quality ads, we were amazed by the volume of valueless inventory," he said.

Only two ad formats delivered significant value: native and video.

The test results triggered Facebook to analyse the ads that came through LiveRail, a Facebook company described as a monetisation platform for publishers, broadcasters, and mobile app developers. "...We immediately shut off the low quality ads. In fact, we removed over 75% of the volume coming from our exchange by turning off publishers circulating bad inventory into LiveRail," Jakubowski shared. "We knew that in good conscience, we couldn’t sell what Atlas and our people-based measurement told us was valueless."

Atlas is focused on helping marketers deliver and measure true business value, Jakubowski said, in native, video and up-and-coming mobile advertising, particularly with several product updates.

Offline Actions ties offline sales to online ad spend, enabling digital investments to take credit as deserved. "Advertisers who measure their ads with Atlas can now upload their point-of-sale (POS) data and understand within minutes if their online ads are influencing offline purchases," Jakubowski said.

Path to Conversion, now available, provides insight into the ways people see ads across multiple devices before making a conversion. While other such solutions rely on cookies, Atlas is based on data from people.

Video Ad Serving will also be broadly available by the end of March.

Editor's note: It should be noted that country lists, offered in local languages, cannot be compared to the English lists. Country lists reflecting what local language speakers think, limiting perspectives to people most likely living in the country, whereas the lists in English could reflect what English speakers around the world think. The list for Taiwan, for example, is in traditional Chinese, which is only used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

*Methodology

All Year in Review lists (except for New Sticker Packs and Places) were measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January 1 and December 1, 2015. To put these lists together, Facebook posts were analysed in an aggregated, anonymised way, and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook.
To determine the Top New Sticker Packs, Facebook looked at all sticker packs that launched in 2015 and ranked them by most sticker sends per day averaged across the year. Sticker Pack lists were not included in this blog post.

Mobile is redefining the festive experience: Facebook

People in Southeast Asia* are sharing more during the festive year-end season on Facebook, the social media platform and on their preferred device - and that device is mobile, says Facebook, the company. Compared to the rest of the year, people share 30% more mobile content during the festive period** and 75% of posts created were on mobile, the company said in a blog post.

"...People share more mobile posts on New Year’s Eve (68% more) and Christmas Eve (36% more) compared to the rest of the season," stated Facebook in the blog post.

Facebook also found that people across demographics are sharing more on Facebook during the season, including youths*** (19% more), Millennials**** (23% more), parents (17% more) and mums (19% more).

"Across Southeast Asia, Facebook conversations during the period are centred on greetings and festive activities in the Philippines (84% of Facebook chatter), Indonesia (90%) and Singapore (52%)," Facebook said.

Shopping peaks in December, the company observed. Retail store check-ins on Facebook spike by 14% compared to the rest of the season, with 39% of check-ins taking place on Saturdays and Sundays. "Over 50% of people in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand said they are intending to shop online more this season, according to Facebook-commissioned polls*****... Over four out of five people in the Philippines (91%), Indonesia (83%) and Thailand (84%) said Facebook is influential to their shopping during the season. More than one in two people in the Philippines (63%), Indonesia (56%) and Thailand (52%) also said that Facebook is the preferred platform to seek advice about what to buy from others," said Facebook in the blog post.

There are geographic differences in shopping days of choice however. Mondays are most popular for online shopping in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, Facebook said, whilst Vietnamese prefer Thursdays and Singaporeans prefer Sundays. When it comes to shopping on mobile, Fridays are the most popular day across the region.

Facebook has observed that the shopping frenzy continues into the New Year. While the company attributes the upswing - it notes that in January 2015, users shopped online 19% more compared to the festive season on average - to good post-Christmas deals, Chinese New Year could also be a big reason. Chinese New Year, when new clothes must be worn and home interiors refreshed before relatives and friends visit, is celebrated in Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam (as Tet), as well as anywhere there is a sizeable ethnic Chinese community. It always falls on January or February; it was on February 19 in 2015, and will start on February 8 in 2016.

The breakdown across countries:

The Philippines

  • 70% of festive season posts were created on mobile
  • Filipinos share 50% more video content and 37% more photo content than the rest of the year
  • Shopping peaks on Christmas Day with 59% more retail store check-ins, and continues into the New Year with 16% more online shopping in January

Facebook launches easy-to-use, lightweight video ad format

More than a third of mobile Internet users in Saudi Arabia are respomsive to video ads compared to a world average of 22%.

Facebook is launching slideshow, a new lightweight type of video ad which is easy for advertisers to use, to help reach more people, on more devices at more connection speeds.

A recent report suggests that in countries like the Philippines where connectivity can be slow, expensive or both and where feature phones are prevalent, people are even more receptive to video ads*, Facebook notes in a blog post announcing slideshow.

Slideshow is both a video creation tool and a new ad format made from a series of still images which helps advertisers tell brand stories in emerging and high-growth countries. Slideshow can also be used by small businesses which do not have the resources to create videos.

Businesses can use their own images or simply pull stock imagery from Facebook's library, and the smaller file size helps advertisers reach more people regardless of device or connection. According to Facebook, a 15-second slideshow can be up to 5x smaller than a video of the same length.

Facebook Singapore creates a truly local office that facilitates creativity

Facebook Singapore's new office in South Beach has been designed to reflect the open, connected workplace culture. The company has incorporated unique cultural references and local flavour to create a workplace that is clearly based in Singapore.

The pantry, meeting areas and snack stands offer lots of space to network and chat. This stand is built like a traditional pushcart, and snacks are displayed in bamboo steamers.

The Facebook mahjong table looks to be another possibility for jumpstarting interaction and serendipity.

Local artists have been invited to contribute to the decor. The artwork on the staircases is by Dawn Ng and simulate the effect of being in a storm of pink confetti. One wall is devoted to a photography exhibit by celebrity Instagram photographer Aik Beng Chia.

The meeting rooms all have interesting names. One was called 'Kopi C Siu Tai', and two adjacents rooms were named 'Same Same' and 'Only Different'. Another is called 'Hiverabad', a play on 'hive' and 'Hyderabad'. This one is particularly inspired as 'C++' is a programming language while SEA is the acronym for Southeast Asia.

There are posters galore in the Facebook workplace, many of them inspirational. One of the most meaningful: Nothing at Facebook is somebody else's problem.

Instagram's Anti-Gravity Room offers amazing possibilities for images on Instagram.

Facebook took majority of social network ad spend in 2014

Ad spend on social networks grew 41% globally in 2014, totalling over US$15.3 billion and accounting for 11% of global digital ad spend, said Strategy Analytics in a Global Social Network Forecast. Facebook accounted for three-quarters of global social network ad spend in 2014, while Twitter accounted for 8%. In 2015, ad spend on social networks is expected to grow by 29%, amounting to an estimated US$24.2 billion.

"Overall, the social network market continues to show strong growth across all regions as the major social network platforms drive usage and engagement via improved integration of digital media content," said Leika Kawasaki, author of the report. "While Facebook currently dominates the global social network market, its absence in China allows local social networks such as QZone and Tencent Weibo to gain traction in the rapidly expanding Chinese digital advertising market."

The social network population passed the 2 billion mark in 2014, with nearly half (46%) of social network users residing in the Asia Pacific region. Of this 2 billion, 68% are Facebook users, the company said. Other findings include:
  • China accounts for almost 25% of the global social network population, with 495 million users in 2014.
  • China is the third-largest geography for global social network ad spend with 8% of the share, behind the US (41%), and then the UK (8.2%).
  • In 2015 social network users will grow to 2.2 billion, or 31% of the global population. By year-end 2019 the company expects social network users to reach 2.72 billion and account for 36% of the population.

Know where you stand on social media with Socialbakers' Social Health Index

Socialbakers, a social media analytics and optimisation company, has introduced its Social Health Index, which was developed in partnership with Lenovo. The industry benchmark provides brands with a single assessment of their social marketing performance across platforms, allowing them to easily measure and compare their entire social footprint in relation to their competitors over time.

"The Social Health Index is the first industry benchmark that puts brands' social marketing performance into context," said Jan Rezab, CEO and Co-Founder of Socialbakers. "Brands need a way to quantify their return on investment into social relative to their competition. Our development of this index with Lenovo provides a simple way for brands in any industry to do this."

The Social Health Index traces a brand's social performance on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and combines it into one single rating. Brands are scored on four metrics key to core business goals - participation of the social audience, acquisition of new community members, retention of the brand's audience, and the shareability and effectiveness of content.

"Lenovo is constantly looking for ways to evaluate the approaches we take in engaging with our customers such as through conversations on our global Twitter handles or through our close to 60 Facebook pages across the organization," said Rod Strother, Director, Digital and Social Center of Excellence at Lenovo.

"We recognised the need for an easy way to benchmark our use of social platforms against others in the industry and share this information in a digestible format with Lenovo executives. Socialbakers was the perfect partner with whom to develop this index due to the company's dedication to providing brands with competitive intelligence insights."

The Social Health Index is now available as part of Socialbakers' executive dashboard. Read the associated blog post here

Philippines senator warns public against investment scams

Senator Bam Aquino of the Philippines has advised the public against schemes that sound too good to be true, with descriptions like "easy money", "quick money", or "double your money".

He noted that various scams are common in popular social networking sites such as Facebook. Some are based on pyramid schemes, where money from new victims is given to earlier victims to show that their initial investments are making a profit and to attract more investments.

"We should be prudent especially when it comes to money. Think twice before you put your hard-earned money into something, especially when it promises high returns of investment," said Aquino, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship.

Aquino spoke after the arrest of several individuals who were behind an investment scam advertised on Facebook. Another investment scam that duped 100 individuals of around P100 million was discovered recently.

A July 29 article in the Manila Bulletin sheds more light, describing a pyramid scheme advertised by a company called Upwarm on Facebook. Upwarm was found to focus on recruitment and did not actually sell products. In a typical pyramid scam, recruited victims would pay fees for being part of the scheme, variously described as registration fees, money for paperwork, or money to buy products, but would profit more if they recruited others than if they actually sold any products. A portion of the money from new recruits would be used to reward those who had recruited them, with the company pocketing the rest.

"Before investing, we must tread on the side of caution by checking with the Securities and Exchange Commission if an investment company is registered," Aquino said.

"Just to make sure, we also must ask for documents that will prove the legitimacy of a company's operation," the senator added. He also called on authorities to intensify their campaign against syndicates involved in other scams to prevent more people from being victimised.

The saved items can be viewed in the “More” tab on the mobile version of Facebook, or by clicking the link on the left side of Facebook on the web. The items can be shared with friends or archived.
