Fuji Xerox delivers primer on 3D printing in Singapore

Eugene Ying
Ying asking for a show of hands on familiarity with additive manufacturing.

Those who would like to get on board with 3D printing can easily find resources to help them in Singapore, said Eugene Ying, 3D Sales Manager, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific during Fuji Xerox DocuWorld in Singapore.

The technology is fast becoming commercialised, Ying noted. He said that Airbus is already using 3D printed parts, for example. The company said in September 2017 that it installed a titanium 3D-printed bracket on an in-series production A350 XWB aircraft. Prior to that, 3D-printed parts like metal printed cabin brackets and bleed pipes had been in use on Airbus A320neo and A350 XWB test aircraft.

The 4 'C's of 3D printing.
The 4 'C's of 3D printing.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is taking off as it can cut costs and lead time in manufacturing applications, Ying explained. He introduced the four 'C's of 3D printing benefits, namely cost of error, compression of time, creativity, and confidentiality. Fewer errors are made with a 3D prototype in hand, as opposed to a virtual model viewed on-screen; any errors can also be rectified quickly by reprinting the model and checking if the model works. The manufacturing and design process is shortened as a result, and everything is kept confidential as the 3D printer is normally on-premise, Ying elaborated.

"Once you've spotted that something is wrong with the design, you can change it straight away," he said. "You can test it immediately."

In Singapore, various institutions are offering help with 3D printing, Ying shared:

The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (Namic)

"All the big guns are coming in to support Namic," Ying said. "You can attend their annual summit to get much more information about additive manufacturing and trends."

This is a centre of excellence set up jointly by the Singapore EDB and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). It is located within Nanyang Polytechnic, and offers training for additive manufacturing, Ying said.

An A*Star initiative, the ARTC covers all aspects of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) in the supply chain for the aviation space.

Another A*Star initiative, this organisation helps companies to adopt additive manufacturing.
This organisation will secure funding to buy new technology so that Singapore organisations can gain experience on it. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students have designed drones with 3D printing from SC3DP for final year projects, Ying said.

The technology has clear use cases in many industries, such as in healthcare, where relatively high-value items which are small and require a lot of customisation can be 3D-printed. Ying listed hearing aids and dental crowns as ideal candidates for 3D-printing, as well as facsimiles of body parts to help surgeons plan operations. A hearing aid that takes nine steps to manufacture traditionally can be done in three steps with 3D printing, he said, with the entire weeks-long process compressed into a day.

"You can't duplicate the part. Everybody's ear is different. Everybody is different," Ying said.

In manufacturing, 3D printing is used for rapid prototyping, as well as parts for various stages in the manufacturing cycle, such as machining and assembly. "The 3D printer gets the job because it cuts manufacturing and design time down," he said.

For the automotive industry, companies such as BMW have switched to 3D-printed parts as they can be customised easily and are lighter, Ying said. BMW stated online that 3D printing has become the absolute standard for prototypes. BMW's website introduces the new BMW i8 Roadster and shares that the mounting for the top cover "would not have been possible using a traditional casting process". "Now the 3D printed car part is stronger and weighs less," BMW said online.

The jewellery industry has also embraced 3D printing as time-consuming, labour-intensive processes can be eliminated, while higher-tolerance variations and more complex geometries can be introduced. "You can keep changing your design," Ying said.

Aerospace players have also invested in 3D-printed parts. In November 2017 Boeing has 3D-printed parts for missiles, helicopters and airplanes. Richard Aston, Senior Technical Fellow at Boeing, said in an article on the Boeing website that "Reduction of piece parts and part weight can be achieved through appropriate implementation of additive manufacturing, while simultaneously improving system performance".
"The technology is advancing every day. New applications are identified and new technoloy with new materials for these applications," concluded Ying. "Today it's your idea. Tomorrow you can build it straight away."

The key guiding principle to remember, he said, is to buy a 3D printer from a reputable brand. "Accuracy is very important," he said.

Ying recommended that interested parties attend the Namic Maritime & Energy Summit on 17 April.

Epson, a printing technologies provider, has collaborated with Singapore-based designers to showcase digitally-printed collections at the FashionisTech showcase at the recently-held FUZE Fashion Technology 2017 in Singapore.

Organised by Textile and Fashion Federation (TAFF), the event is the first fashion technology summit to be held in Singapore, and aims to promote the advancement in material innovation and showcase creative partnerships with the use of technology amongst Singapore fashion labels.

Singaporean labels Wai Yang, Pleatation and Ying The Label worked with Epson to create and print their collections digitally with Epson’s digital dye-sublimation textile printer and direct-to-garment printer. Each designer showcased six outfits as part of their collections at the event.

Wai Yang

Burmese-born Singapore-based Wai Wai launched Wai Yang, in 2016. For Wai Yang, the printed collection will form the label’s autumn/winter 2017 collection. Inspired by an abandoned building in Prague, the collection features boxy and masculine silhouettes with vibrant prints.

With this, founder/designer Wai aims to re-appropriate the inappropriate, breathing new life and meaning into otherwise unwanted objects, turning trash and defective objects such as torn cargo boxes, dead leaves, wire and bubble wrap into abstract print designs.

The designs are translated into subtle print effects on meticulously selected textiles via a combination of dye-sublimation, direct printing and textured screen-printing techniques, resulting in a highly tactile collection.

“Working to produce my collection with a digital textile printer for the first time was an eye-opening experience. The printer was able to reproduce my designs accurately, capturing the colours vividly. In the process of experimenting with the printing, I discovered that there are many different printing effects that can be achieved on different materials, and I love the fact that it is possible to play with many unusual materials as well. All my print designs are printed beautifully and would otherwise never have been used, adding a new dimension and richness to my designs and pieces,” said Wai.

Pleatation

Pleatation is a pleat-focused brand from Singapore, specialising in pleated products in fashion, stationery, home and lifestyle. Pleatation launched its Resort 1718 collection, Le Enchant, at the event. The printed collection consisting of vibrant hues in its signature pleated designs. Taking inspiration from enchanted forests around the world, Le Enchant captures beautiful shades and wild silhouettes in its latest collection, printed through dye-sublimation printing.

“When printing with Epson’s digital textile technology, I’ve noticed the colours captured are brighter and more vibrant. Digital textile printing enables quick turnaround and shortens the production process, which is important to my business as new designs and collections need to be created and brought to retail quickly. Epson’s dye-sublimation printing technology reproduces my designs vividly unlike other printing technologies I’ve worked with, and I’m glad for the opportunity for this collaboration,” said Chiang Xiaojun, founder of Pleatation. By breaking down basic silhouettes of essential products, she recreates new styles with the use of colour, print and textures.

Ying The Label

Source: Epson Singapore. Li.
Source: Epson Singapore. Li.
For Ying The Label, the collection in collaboration with Epson draws its inspiration from the idea of contentment and living in the moment. From seeing the silver lining in every roadblock, to being able to dream, Ying uses vibrant strokes of colours to represent feelings in 'The Moment'. The relaxed silhouettes are deliberately kept simple, with emphasis on every detail of founder and designer Li Ying's unique art through the use of dye-sublimation and direct-to-garment printing methods.

“Printing with Epson’s digital textile printing technologies has opened new avenues of printing and design, in terms of textures and turnaround time to produce the collection. Experimenting with fabrics and seeing the colours of the printed fabric has been an amazing process. I am currently exploring avenues with Epson’s printing technologies to produce future collections,” said Li.

Li's art is created using abstract brush strokes dipped in whimsical colour palettes that can bring out the unique personality of every piece.

“The collaboration with the designers aims to showcase the versatility and capabilities of our digital textile printers and the opportunities it brings to the fashion industry. We aim to support the creative visions of designers to transform their ideas into reality. With our innovative printing technologies, designers are now free to express their creativity without limitations in colours and designs,” said Shuji Hamaguchi, Regional GM (SE Asia), Epson Singapore.

Digital printing shortens turnaround time and enables printing in small volumes for customised prints, compared to traditional printing techniques, which require high volumes and long lead times. As a result, digital printing helps designers to achieve their artistic vision by translating their ideas to a range of fabrics quickly, easily and in the highest quality.

Epson digital dye sublimation printers use Epson’s proprietary technology known as Micro Piezo and PrecisionCore TFP head technology. The Micro Piezo printheads, unlike thermal inkjet systems, eject droplets of ink via mechanical pressure and do not use heat, making it compatible with a far wider variety of inks and mediums. By precisely controlling the volume of ink contained in each droplet of ink, Epson’s Micro Piezo printers not only generate virtually no wasted ink, they also ensure that sharp, rich and virtually grain-free images are rendered at all times.

The FUZE Fashion Technology 2017 summit was held from 16 to 17 March 2017 in Singapore.

OKI's smart extendable platform (sXP) can connect to an existing pull printing* fleet or access to document management software, at no extra cost. Both devices possess a powerful new engine resulting in speeds of 30/30 ppm (pages per minute, for colour/monochrome printing) and 1,200 x 1,200 dpi print quality.

The C612n and C712n in the upper end of the range combine fast production of high-level output with reliability and robust security, all at a relatively low cost of ownership. The portfolio also includes an A3 digital LED printer, theC833n, which boasts one of the smallest footprints on the market. Thanks to OKI's digital LED technology and HD Colour output, the C833n delivers saturated colours and finer details on a wide range of media.

Models MC363dn and MC573dn are compatible with AirPrint by Apple and all new devices, which also include the C612n, C712n and C833n, are Google Cloud Print 2.0 ready for mobile printing. Optional wireless LAN support is also available across the range. Security features include Private Print to help keep confidential documents safe, optional Card Release and Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) compliance.

Setup, use and maintenance of the printers have also been simplified. Models MC363dn andMC573dn even come with video guidance for installation and the replacement of consumables.

Increase effiiciency for hospitality and retail with Epson solutions

Epson Singapore, a provider of point-of-sales (POS) and labelling printers, showcased its latest POS solutions to streamline operations and enhance cost efficiency for the food and hospitality industries at Food&HotelAsia2016 (FHA2016)FHA2016 is the premier trade show in Asia that focuses on food and hospitality products and solutions from around the world.

Epson worked with system integrators Enterprise Advance System Intelligence (EASI) and POS Square to transform its booth at FHA2016 into a theme park with ticketing and F&B scenarios to show how its POS and labelling printers can be seamlessly integrated into hospitality and F&B operations. The setup offers solutions from front-of-house to the kitchen, enabling service and kitchen staff alike to focus on the customer and the business.

The scenarios also feature previews of the compact TM-m30 receipt printer and versatile TM-P80 portable receipt printers, the first such previews in Southeast Asia. Set to be launched towards the later part of this year, both products are ideal for tablet POS environments, as the TM-m30 can communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth or Ethernet, while the TM-P80 connects through both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Theme park scenario including self service order kiosks.
In the theme park scenario, customers can order tickets and a meal together on an interactive touch screen or tablet. With rising wage costs and an increasingly tighter labour market facing food and hospitality operators, as well as greater consumer and industry acceptance of self-service concepts, Epson has partnered with EASI to feature a self-service kiosk concept for the first time at FHA 2016. The offering enables delegates to expedite basic ordering, ticketing and payment functions, providing convenience, control and choice for the customers while reducing staffing requirements.

Kitchen staff use an interactive touch screen in conjunction with the Epson TM-m30 receipt printer to process orders.
Kitchen staff use an interactive touch screen powered by the TM-T88V-DT, which can control other POS devices such as the Epson TM-m30 receipt printer wirelessly to process orders. Staff can indicate when the queued order is being processed, and also when it is ready for collection. Every order that is marked as ready for collection triggers the printing of a collection ticket on the TM-m30 printer that can be paired with the food. At the same time the TM-T88V-DT ensures the display of the order number at the collection counter, so that the customer can pick it up.
