L’Oréal launches stretchable skin sensor that measures sun exposure

Model wearing a My UV patch.
Source: L’Oréal. Model wearing a My UV patch.

L’Oréal has unveiled My UV Patch, the first-ever stretchable skin sensor designed to monitor UV exposure and help consumers educate themselves about sun protection, at the Consumer Electronics Show. The new technology arrives at a time when sun exposure has become a major health issue, with 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers being associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sun* in addition to skin pigmentation and photoageing.

To address these growing concerns, L’Oréal Group’s dermatological skincare brand, La Roche-Posay, is introducing a first-of-its kind stretchable electronic, My UV Patch. The patch is a transparent adhesive that, unlike the rigid wearables currently on the market, stretches and adheres directly to any area of skin that consumers want to monitor. Measuring approximately one square inch in area and 50 micrometers thick - half the thickness of an average strand of hair - the patch contains photosensitive dyes that factor in the baseline skin tone and change colors when exposed to UV rays to indicate varying levels of sun exposure.

Consumers will be able to take a photo of the patch and upload it to the La Roche-Posay My UV Patch mobile app, which analyses the varying photosensitive dye squares to determine the amount of UV exposure the wearer has received. The My UV Patch mobile app will be available on both iOS and Android, incorporating Near Field Communications (NFC)-enabled technology into the patch-scanning process for Android.

“Connected technologies have the potential to completely disrupt how we monitor the skin’s exposure to various external factors, including UV,” says Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator. “Previous technologies could only tell users the amount of potential sun exposure they were receiving per hour while wearing a rigid, non-stretchable device. The key was to design a sensor that was thin, comfortable and virtually weightless so people would actually want to wear it. We’re excited to be the first beauty company entering the stretchable electronics field and to explore the many potential applications for this technology within our industry and beyond.”

The stretchable, peel-and-stick wearable unites L’Oréal Group’s scientific research on the skin and expertise with UV protection with the technological capabilities of MC10a stretchable electronics company that creates intelligent, stretchable systems for biometric healthcare analytics, and PCH’s 20-year experience in product development, manufacturing and supply chain. My UV Patch was developed by L’Oréal’s US-based Technology Incubator, a business division dedicated entirely to technological innovation, alongside MC10, which contributed physiological sensing and pattern recognition algorithms to measure skin changes and PCH which design-engineered the sensor.

"With My UV Patch, L'Oréal is taking the lead in developing the next generation of smart skincare technology powered by MC10's unique, stretchable electronics platform, that truly addresses a consumer need," said Scott Pomerantz, CEO of MC10. "This partnership with L'Oréal marks an exciting new milestone for MC10 and underscores the intersection of tech and beauty and the boundless potential of connected devices within the beauty market."

“Together with La Roche-Posay dermatologists like myself, we share a mission to help increase sun-safe behaviour,” added Dr Alysa Herman. “La Roche-Posay recently commissioned a global study in 23 countries, which surveyed 19,000 women and men and found a huge gap in consumer behaviour...With the new My UV Patch, for the first time, we are leveraging technology to help incite a true behavioural change through real-time knowledge. ”

Recommended by more than 25,000 dermatologists worldwide, La Roche-Posay offers a unique range of daily skincare developed with dermatologists to meet their standards in efficacy, tolerance and elegant textures for increased compliance. The products, which are developed using a strict formulation charter, include a minimal number of ingredients to reduce side effects and reactivity and are formulated with effective ingredients at optimal concentrations for increased efficacy.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-870 ticks all the boxes

Two views of the Tough TG-870 showing the flipup screen.
Source: Olympus Imaging Singapore. The Tough TG-870 compact camera has a 180-degree flipup screen with a 2.6x brightness boost function for optimum daytime LCD visibility outdoors.
Olympus has launched the Stylus Tough TG-870, a premium rugged camera built to capture high-quality photos and video in challenging situations. A new Autofocus-Lock function, automatic edge distortion compensation for flattering ultra-wide angle selfies, and a significantly smaller USB charger are the highlight improvements over its predecessor, the Tough TG-860.

This compact camera features an ultra-wide angle 21mm–105mm (35mm equivalent) f3.5–5.7 zoom lens, which Olympus says is the widest lens in the rugged compact category, ideal for group selfie shots. The camera has 5x optical zoom and a 920K-dot 180-degree tilting LCD monitor, customisable front button, as well as full HD 1080/60p video. It also has built-in Wi-Fi and GPS support.

In the tradition of the Olympus Tough series of rugged compact cameras, the Stylus Tough TG-870 is built to withstand extreme conditions: the camera is waterproof to depths of 50' (15 m), freezeproof to -10℃, shockproof from 7' (2.1 m), crushproof to 100 kg of force and dustproof.

For the best image quality, Olympus has used the same type of high-performance glass optics that it uses in the Zuiko lens system for PEN and OM-D cameras. The TruePic VII image processor, also found in Olympus’ OM-D series of interchangeable lens cameras, is paired with a 16 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor to capture clear images, sharp details and true-to-life colours, even underwater.

The Stylus Tough TG-870’s 180-degree tilting high-resolution LCD monitor has double the resolution and is 1.1x brighter than that of its predecessor, enabling the user to see more detail while shooting outdoors or underwater. The TG-870 also detects the orientation in which it is being held, to assist the user in capturing the perfect selfie, point-of-view action video, or over-under shot (Editor's note: split shots have part of the shot underwater and the remainder of the shot above water).

The free Olympus Image Share app synchronises a user’s iOS or Android mobile device with the Stylus Tough TG-870 via the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi, enabling instant image and movie transfers and direct uploading to websites and social media. A live view of the camera’s lens appears on the smart device display. Users can control the camera remotely by touching the smart device. The GPS feature boasts fast positioning in under 10 seconds via three satellite systems and helps users track precisely where they are in the world. The Olympus Image Track (OI.Track) smartphone app allows users to update the camera’s GPS assist data and transfer GPS logs and images from the camera to a smartphone for simplified viewing and management.

A variety of shooting modes and 13 Art Filters are available, including six new filters (Vintage, Key Line, Watercolor, Light Tone, Cross Process and Gentle Sepia). The Stylus Tough TG-870 is also equipped with night-time Live Composite Mode, which automatically combines the brightest areas of multiple images taken with interval shooting for photos of cityscapes, star trails and light painting. Sportcam Modes put four video options right at the user’s fingertips.

With 60p Movie, the camera captures full HD 1080p video at 60 frames per second (fps), with 720/60p and 480/60p options also available. With High-Speed Movie, the Stylus Tough TG-870 can record slow-motion video at 120 fps at 854x480 (16:9) or 640x480 (4:3) resolution, or 240 fps at 640x360 (16:9) or 480x360 (4:3) resolution. Time Lapse Movie compresses hours of action into a short movie, and Sport Burst allows photographers to capture sequential images with a shutter interval of 0.05 to 60 seconds. For video capture after dark, camera settings are automatically optimised for low light with Nightscape Movie.

The Stylus Tough TG-870’s rugged construction can be further reinforced with the CSCH-124 Silicone Jacket, which shields the camera from surface damage. The CSCH-123 Sport Holder supports hands-free photography and video recording, allowing users to attach the camera to backpack straps or a chest harness during intensive activities like rock climbing or snowboarding. The PT-057 Underwater Case lets users go down to 147' (45 m), and the elective UFL-3 Underwater Flash facilitates genuine underwater flash photography. A second tripod base plate on the camera offers the added benefit of vertical mounting, and the F-5AC compact high-capacity AC adapter reduces charging time.

The future of banking may include screenless ATMs driven by mobile apps

EyeLock, a provider of iris-based identity authentication solutions, and Diebold, a global provider self-service technology, software and services, have teamed up on a screenless, self-service ATM concept  that is more compact than traditional ATMs. A prototype called Irving is currently being tested by Citibank in the US.

The design of the new concept ATM does not have a PIN pad, card reader, or screen. Instead, all transactions take place via a mobile app on the user's smartphone. In addition to near field communication (NFC) and quick response (QR) code technology, the new system uses iris scanning from EyeLock to identify the customer once at the ATM.

"EyeLock believes that the age of carrying plastic cards and remembering passwords is just about over and the era of unfettered personal access through biometric technology is just beginning," said Anthony Antolino, Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer for EyeLock. "For banking and other applications, EyeLock's iris identity authentication solutions are not only highly secure, but very easy to use."

According to Frank Natoli, Executive Vice President of Self-Service Technology at Diebold, customers sign into their banking app on their phone or tablet and determine how much money they want to take out. Once the withdrawal is input, they then go to any EyeLock-equipped ATM on the network to complete the transaction. They would simply approach the machine, which identifies them through NFC, scans the iris of his or her eye to quickly verify identity, and the ATM dispenses the correct amount of cash. The whole process takes less than half the time of a typical ATM transaction today - with Irving, cash withdrawals can be completed in less than ten seconds.

"While digital channels are evolving, cash will continue to play an important role in consumer transactions," Natoli said. "That's where Diebold comes into play – to bridge the digital and physical worlds of cash in unprecedented ways through cardless transactions, mobile integration and faster, more convenient access. The Irving concept embodies a new era of banking and puts the user experience at the top of the pyramid to connect consumers with their money when and how they see fit."

Citibank is in the early stages of testing the high tech ATM and plans to roll it out are still to be determined. "At Citi, we are always looking for innovations that simplify and enhance the banking experience," said CitiFinTech CEO Heather Cox.
